First Impressions

Glynn followed Ryou to home room as they continued their conversation from the bus.

"Here we are," he announced as they came to a door.

"Do I have to?" Glynn asked, a familiar feeling of dread creeping into her stomach as she eyed the door.

Ryou laughed and assured her that his friends weren't going to bite before opening the door. Ready for the worst, Glynn followed him through the door into the almost deserted room.

A group of people sat around a cluster of desks close to one of the large windows that lined the wall. The group was composed almost entirely of males and in realizing this Glynn relaxed a little, she had always gotten on with guys better than girls. One of the members had brown pointed hair; another had scruffy blonde hair and one was wearing a dice earring with black spiky hair. The only girl in the group had brown hair that was cut reasonably short. Glynn and Ryou walked over to the group and as they got closer Glynn could see that a duel was in progress.

`Hmmm . . . Duel Monsters,' Glynn though, her hand automatically going to the deck in the pocket of her jeans, `at least we have something in common.'

"Hey guys," Ryou said.

"Hey," they all answered. Glynn noticed with surprise that there was actually another kid standing in between the duelers, who were pointy hair and the girl. He had blonde, red and black hair and large violet eyes. He was wearing what appeared to be an upside down pyramid with an eye engraved on it on a chan around his neck and he was without a doubt the shortest person she had ever seen. The girl looked up from the duel and in spotting Glynn a huge smile spread on her face.

`Uh ohh. .' Glynn thought instantly.

"Oooo . . . new kid!" she exclaimed happily, "I'm Tea, this is..."

"... Tea, before you completely loose it would you mind paying attention to the duel," the pointy haired kid opposite her said quickly but not unkindly, "I'm sure someone else can handle the introductions. I'm Tristan by the way."

Before Glynn could say anything the short, spiky haired kid in the middle began to introduce the remaining people, starting with the black haired kid.

"That's Duke Devlin, the blonde over there is Joey Wheeler and I'm Yugi Mouto, I guess you already know everyone else."

"Uhh... yeah. I'm Glynn Waters," she said, feeling slightly put out around so many people, she wasn't one fore large groups.

Most people smiled or nodded in acknowledgement and tea remarked that she had a pretty name, causing Glynn to shudder visibly and everyone to break into laughter before turning back to the duel, Tea completely oblivious to what she had said wrong. Glynn watched the duel as well and within two minutes had noted over 5 mistakes each to both Tea and Tristan. Looking over at the others spectators it was obvious that she wasn't the only one biting her tongue. This in turn caused her to wonder about how good they were.

`Their names sound familiar... where have I heard them before?' she asked herself the pieces slowly falling into place.

`Holy shit!' she thought, `that's Duke Devlin, creator of dungeon dice monsters.' She didn't play the game, but she had to admire the amount of time and energy that had to be put into a project that big, `and if I'm right Yugi is the winner of Battle City and the King of Games. Joey, Joey... why is that familiar? Battle City ... hmmm.... that's right. Forth place at Battle City."

Joey was now almost jumping after every mistake and it was obvious to Glynn that he would be the first to snap and say something.

"Think ya moves through," was all he managed to get out before Duke tackled him to the ground, landing on top of the struggling blonde with a hand over his mouth, yelling something about minding his own business. Glynn watched the whole scene with amusement, even smiling a little until a cold voice drew her attention.

"Like the Mutt could give any good advice," it said from across the room. Glynn turned towards the source of the voice and was met with the sight of a tall brunette with bright blue eyes sitting at a lone desk typing away at a silver and blue laptop.

"Stay out of it Kaiba," said Tristan from the table, not bothering to turn around.

`This is Mokuba's brother?' Glynn thought to herself, `they look nothing alike.'

But then again, Glynn knew that siblings didn't always look the same.

"And quit calin' me a dog!" Joey yelled, being helped off the floor by Duke.

"But it's such an accurate description," Kaiba said, still not looking up from his screen,

"You have no manners, you an utter imbecile, you smell..."

"That's it!" Joey shouted, launching himself at Kaiba or at least he would have if he hadn't been pulled back by two pairs of hands at the last minute, causing him to land on the floor instead.

"Don't do it Joey," Yugi said.

"He's not worth your time," agreed Tristan.

"There's also no way you could win, poor defenseless little puppy," Kaiba jeered from his seat, finally looking up from his laptop, a smirk forming on his face.

With this newest insult Duke had to join the group holding Joey back and Ryou lead the whole group out of the room, leaving tea and a surprised Glynn behind.

"Come on Glynn," Tea said, walking to the door expecting Glynn to follow her, but Glynn didn't budge and eventually Tea looked back to find the girls aqua eyes burning with anger.

`Ohh no, she doesn't know what she's getting herself into,' Tea thought, looking over to see a slightly amused Kaiba, already immersed in whatever he was doing on his laptop.

"Come on Glynn," she repeated more urgently, moving closer to the still immobile girl.

"Why did he call Joey a dog?" she asked quietly.

"Nobody knows, he just started one day," Tea answered, "it's been going on for a while now."

"So, Joey didn't do anything to him?"

"Nothing that bad," Tea confirmed.

"Kaiba," she said, loud enough for him to hear this time.

"I really don't have time for this..." he said in a bored tone.

"Why do you call Joey a dog?" she asked while a now scared Tea backed away slowly from the girl.

"Why do you care?" he shot back, fixing his icy glare on the teen.

Meeting his eyes with a practiced glare of her own she felt the hairs on he back of her neck stand up and goose bumps formed on her arms, but she refused to back away from the challenge. Both simply stared, trying to figure the other out and both coming up with nothing.

"You really think dogs are defenseless?" she asked, ignoring his previous question.

"There just stupid pathetic animals," he said.

"Well then, remind me to introduce you to mine one day," she said her lips curling into a very Kaiba-ish smirk of her own, noticing a flicker of an emotion ... fear? surprise? ... in the taller boys eyes.

She left the room without another word, a surprised and confused Tea following her out the door.
