Amber triple-checked her homework to make sure she had done it. She had. She made sure she had a sharpened pencil. She did. She looked to see if there was enough paper in her notebooks. There was. She absentmindently stared at the wall.
"Amber? Are you feeling ok?" Angel muttered as a few of the boys started throwing paper airplanes at each other.
"Huh? Oh yeah I'm good…" Amber was still thinking about Shanya's warning. Why does she want me to stop this stupid evil? And what is it? What the heck's going on?
Amber jumped when the homeroom bell rang. Her homeroom teacher, Mr. Ekusuy, strode into the classroom and started taking role as always.
I'll just pretend it never happened, Amber thought. It's not important… she was probably just making the whole thing up…probably to scare me or freak me out…just a practical joke. Yeah, I'll ignore it, she decided. After all, everything's just like normal…
"Onimanim, Amber," Mr. Ekusuy called.
"Uh… here…" Amber responded. Mr. Ekusuy put down the attendance sheet and stood up.
"Class, I am pleased to announce that two new students will be joining us today," he told the class. A wave of whispers flooded the class immediately.
"They're probably related. It'd be too much of a coincidence," Angel muttered. Amber nodded.
"They should be here any minute," Mr. Ekusuy continued. "I'd like you all to be very kind to them and help them around the school. Thank you." Everyone continued whispering for a couple more minutes. The class turned abruptly towards the door when they heard a sharp knock.
"That's them," Mr. Ekusuy said. He opened the door and a boy and a girl walked into the room.
The girl was about Amber's height, maybe a little bit taller. She had long brown hair with a silver streak on each side. Her eyes were a gleaming golden brown. The mischievous smile she had made her look confident and excited, but Amber could tell she was a very cautious and apprehensive. Amber sort of felt bad for her, because she seemed like she'd been through a lot, and she was determined to become friends with her, because this girl looked like someone who would never betray a friend.
The boy was a little short for his age. He had short black hair casually spiked over, and his dark eyes had a reddish tint to them. He looked a little intimidating in Amber's opinion. She glanced sideways to see Angel's impression of the new students. She was surprised: Angel was grinning stupidly at the new boy. Amber glanced back at Kristian, who rolled her eyes.
"Class, these are our new students. Would you please introduce yourselves?" Mr. Ekusuy said. The girl stepped forward.
"Uh, hi, I'm Katana.." the girl started.
"Hi, Katana," half the class chanted stupidly, sounding like a confession club or something. Stop it, Amber thought, you'll make her feel stupid. Amber looked up quickly to see how Katana was taking the stupidity of her homeroom class. She was relieved to find Katana was close to laughing.
"Thanks… I'm Katana Ieih, and I'm… I'm transferring here." Katana smiled.
"Katana, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?" Mr. Ekusuy asked.
"Uh… well, ok. I… I'm kinda shy and I'm not that… that good at making friends… I don't know." Katana muttered, still smiling.
"Thank you, Katana." Mr. Ekusuy said. He turned and looked expectantly at the boy, who raised an eyebrow before saying, "I'm Vincent Ieih. I'm her brother." He flicked a thumb at Katana. "And I have nothing more to say."
"Uh, thank you, Katana, Vincent. Now, Vincent, why don't you take a seat over here by Kristian, and Katana, take that empty seat right next to Usarak. Usarak, Kristian, raise your hands please, so Vincent and Katana know where to go?" Mr. Ekusuy said.
Oh, no, Amber thought, worriedly watching Katana sit next to Usarak. Sure, the girl looked like she could take care of herself mostly, but Usarak was not normal. He had to be the creepiest, most annoying brat in the whole school. He loved seeing other people embarrass themselves and had this freaky way of breaking up friends. He got students in trouble all the time for things they didn't do, and he lived to see others' pain. It was sickening how he loved to see other people's fear, anguish, and embarrassment.
"Um… let's see, Vincent, Katana, what's your first period class? You need someone to show you around and the bell's going to ring in a minute." Mr. Ekusuy glanced at Katana.
"I have English first period," Katana said.
"Oh, good, that's me, does anyone else have English first period who would be willing to show Katana around the school?"
Amber immediately raised her hand. She was horrified to find that Usarak raised his hand as well. Call on me, she thought. Call on me, call on me, call on me…
"Yes, Amber, you can show Katana around." Yes! Amber smiled at Katana, who smiled back.
"Vincent?" Mr. Ekusuy asked.
"I have Geography." Vincent muttered.
"Ok, who has Geography first?" Several people raised their hands. "Ok, Ayuot, you can show him around…" Mr. Ekusuy scribbled down a note for Vincent's Geography teacher and handed it to him. "Is that alright with you, Vincent?"
"Hn." Vincent replied. He took the note just as the first period bell rang.
"Ok, class, go on… Amber and Katana, you two go ahead, I'll get you caught up later." Amber jumped up and grinned at Katana. She walked over to her.
"Hi, I'm Amber."
"Hey Amber, I'm Katana, like I said, but please call me Katana. Do NOT call me Kat. Everyone seems to love to call me Kat." Katana smiled again.
Amber laughed. "Sure, come on."
So they took off, and Amber showed Katana where all her classes were and discussed her teachers so she'd know what to expect.
"Oh, and Katana? Please be careful around Usarak. He loves to see other people embarrassed, or hurt, or in trouble. He's a real trouble maker, so please, please, please be careful." Amber bit her lip. Katana raised an eyebrow but nodded.
"Guess he's not too good with the girls, is he?" Katana muttered.
"Oh, trust me, he doesn't care about girls," Amber muttered back.
They started to head back to English, but as they rounded the next corner, they found themselves face-to-face with Ayuot and Vincent.
"Oh, hi Vincent," Katana muttered. "And you are…?"
"Ayuot," Ayuot said.
"Ok then. Vincent, this is Amber."
"Hn," was Vincent's reply. Katana rolled her eyes.
"Amber." Vincent said.
"Huh? What?" Amber asked.
"Your hair tie is coming out," he muttered.
"Oh… thanks…" Amber was startled. "Um… well… I'll go fix it, bye Vincent, Ayuot… Katana, you can just wait here…" Amber dashed into the bathroom.
Staring at the mirror but not paying attention, Amber started fixing her hair, even though it wasn't falling out too much. Whatever, she thought. Maybe he's just weird or something… he certainly acts weird. Like opposite of Kata-
BOOM.
Amber fell over. She heard the breaking of glass… shards of the mirror flew everywhere… She closed her eyes and desperately tried to crawl out… the pain of glass shooting into her legs was overcoming her thoughts… she saw a stall wall falling… and then everything was black.
