~ ~ ~

There was something unexplainably wonderful about going faster and faster on a bike that never touched the ground.

It was the thrill, he decided as he overtook the other bike around a corner.

The thrill of being better, being faster ultimately.

He knew how open his wild smile and flowing hair was, knew how open his appearance and looks were. But even in the white dressed and even white (somehow) tinted visor of the completely masked other driver, Yugi couldn't help but care only for the race.

The human sighed blissfully as he rounded another corner in the lead, he could hear the whistling wind and the purr of the engines over said wind, it was odd that these bikes purred, they didn't roar like normal motorbikes, it was odd and slightly sad for the boy.

Would all these things that he valued, be gone?

Would honey be a delicacy?

What about hand sewed clothing?

Or making your own meals, the joy of preparing things or growing them yourself?

Were there still places to get tours of forests, or had the endangerment of the fauna taken away these things?

Candles were long gone… the joy of candlelit dinners, of eating food that had heart and soul poured into it, looking into plum eyes and feeling wonderful?

Hearing those lips make soft jokes, maybe even one day having private jokes between them?

Falling asleep in a wooden cabinet?

Or would all these things be replaced by metal?

Would all these things be generated to almost perfect reality by holograms?

Did anyone know the difference?

Yugi felt tears coming to his eyes. Was this what Jounouchi meant?

Not having to watch the ones you love die in your arms…

The things you loved…

The people…

The person…

Yami

He drifted away from racing the other bike as he slowed, the streets here were almost familiar. His thoughts were too far gone to stop, too deeply sad.

Is this why Yami had wanted to make him sleep for a while, so that when he needed to hold the teacher he could just thaw him out and be with him for a few days at a time?

The idea would have been funny, hell even scary, if Yugi wasn't suddenly confronted with life as being older than he was ever meant to be.

When it came down to it, if he did succeed, where would that leave Jou?

Again, he was confronted with the idea, what if Jou chose the immortal?

Would Yugi choose to live forever in something like happiness, if he were in Jou's place?

If Yugi were immortal, would he try to keep Yami alive if their situations were reversed?

Jou could never interfere with human life because he simply didn't have the power to make people live longer or shorter.

Is that what separated the immortal beings, their ability to change or watch the world on which they lived?

And what would happen when there was no world?

What would it be like, to see everything he had ever known, disappear?

Tears were falling down his face now as the bike rolled slowly onward, down familiar streets, up a familiar ramp…

This world he was in now, it was so alien.

Was it even really earth?

"No wood…" He choked on the words.

Had it all started with the resources simply running out, and what happened when there were no resources?

"When earth does run out…"

There was no magical way to fix something like that… it could be done again, and again, and again…

But what about the ones who saw it happen?

What did Jou think when he saw someone crying because the world was doomed?

Did Jou cry about it?

Did Yami?

"They see it all… they've seen everything, and yet…they don't seem disturbed by it." He stared at the road.

"Is that what drives them to try and preserve what they can? To let Jou love a vampire? Because it will all die… it will all vanish… and to live in ignorance is to live in bliss… but they know it will happen, so they struggle against it…"

Yami simply couldn't just let him go…

He actually couldn't bring himself to do it; Yugi thought with a jolt, the vampire couldn't bring himself to lose Yugi, no matter what…

"And if he had… what would it have been like? Would I be here? To see this horrible world?"

The answer was a startling no.

If Yami hadn't of fallen in love with Yugi the human wouldn't have realized why Yami couldn't simply just let him fade from memory.

The world wasn't horrible though… it was just so different…

The loss and the gain were so equal… but how could anyone here know what they had lost? They never had it to begin with.

Yugi wiped the tears from his face as he began to regain his thoughts, he frowned in annoyance, he'd been thinking about Yami! He had to kill the vampire; Yami was too much of a threat as it was!

The place he was outside of registered.

The building was old, obviously from the way it was so run down.

"Hn." He grunted.

White and red and blue paint was peeled back and steps rotted in places and disappeared in others. The door was caved in and most of the south wall was missing, most of the wood obviously unusable. The garden was overgrowing and the weeds were attacking the garage. Well, what was left of the shamble he had once called a garage.

"It's sad isn't it? To outlive everything, even something that seems so sturdy. The world changes so much, but some things… it doesn't even leave behind." A tired voice spoke behind the human.

Yugi was surprised and he did tense, but he'd been thinking much the same.

"It just doesn't feel long enough. The damage… the change… none of it feels long enough! There are no marks of age on me, no scars from battles, fuck, there's no memory. I just woke up and everything was fucked." Yugi sighed.

"Hai. Every now and then I compare it, I compare the way things have gone. You have no idea what it's like to sleep for a few millennia and wake up to these kinds of changes, more than once. Can you believe no one knows what pottery is?"

Yugi shook his head, still not turning to see the vampire behind him. He should have known Yami would find him. It wasn't hard to figure that somehow, Yugi would end up back at his own home.

"Why did you do this to me?" He whispered softly.

Yami grunted, moving closer to the teacher. "Why are you so upset about it?" he replied in kind.

Yugi felt his temper rise. The shorter rounded on the vampire, but whatever he had been about to say died on his lips.

Yami looked like sex poured into a body suit. Hell the tight plastic body suit looked like it had been poured onto Yami. The vampire wore a short red jacket with enough pockets to drown in and a belt that hung off his right hip a little. Something that looked like a penlight, but probably wasn't, was dangling from the belt, there was also a strange little black computer-ish device clipped to a hook on the belt and some of the pockets had bulges in them. See, none of this was the thing that made Yugi's brain do a one' eighty. The body suit was so tightly pressed that certain vampiric 'assets' were very well displayed.

Yugi almost had a nosebleed. The human bit back a choked 'eep' and settled for gawking.

Yami blinked a few times. "What is it?" The vampire looked down at his boots and then back up.

"Why are you staring at me like that? You look like someone has just hit you with a sledge hammer on the foot and you're still waiting for the circulation to come back."

Yugi found a voice. "What in Kami's name are you wearing??"

Yami smiled wickedly, accented voice purring. "Ohh, mhmm, well, its good for masturbation actually, really shows off the curves."

Yugi felt heat race up his face. "You are perverted."

Yami laughed and stepped closer. "It's been so long, Yugi-kun… there is so much of you I want to explore…" he reached out for the smaller form.

Yugi flinched and drew back. "How sweet, don't touch me Mr. Yami." He snapped.

Yami's expression softened to that of hurt briefly before he sighed tiredly.

"You're just going to take off, just like that? I've missed you so much… the soft gasps you make when I draw you closer to the edge… those beautiful violet eyes… "He closed his eyes. "Do I really mean nothing to you?"

Yugi felt daggers plunging into his heart at the vampire's words. More than anything he wanted to be held and reassured.

No, he thought, I can't love a monster.

I could, the little voice in the back of Yugi's head offered up.

Yugi ignored the voice. "You are a monster; you mean nothing but danger to me." He whispered angrily.

Who he was truly angry at was up for grabs.

Yugi had a split second in which he realized that maybe Yami was getting tired of Yugi spitting venom before he was suddenly pinned against the vampire's body, faster than the human body could move, Yami had grabbed Yugi's wrists and pulled the boy's arms back, pressed the boy against him and grabbed his lips in his own.

Yugi's mind did a hoop'de'loop as Yami's cool lips pried his own open. It wasn't what you would call an invasion, really, but it was naughty, very naughty. Yugi found himself whimpering softly as Yami's tongue slid wetly against his own, lips angling at just the right angle and hips grinding into Yugi's stomach. There was no leverage to struggle and no real want to struggle anyway.

The voice in the back of Yugi's head purred with delight, Yugi on the other hand began to groan, trying to move, unsuccessfully, away.

After a few moments Yami pulled away, plum eyes full of tears.

"Why? I've missed you so much…"

Yugi looked to one side, cheeks blushing red. "You don't even know me, Mr.Yami." he whispered softly.

They didn't move for a long time, well, rather, Yami didn't move and Yugi didn't have much choice.

"Let me go." Yugi said.

Yami shook his head. "I can't…"

Yugi felt tears rush to his eyes as those words beat into his heart.

If he had the choice, would he want to let go of a loved one? To cheat death?

Would he do anything to keep himself?

The tears actually began falling and Yugi sagged in the vampire's arms. Yami released him hastily, not sure what to expect.

Yugi surprised himself by curling his hands over Yami's jacket and crying into the vampire's chest.

Yami lowered them to the ground and brushed his knuckles against Yugi's cheeks. "Shhh, hush, it'll be alright, Yugi-kun."

Yugi shook his head. "No it won't!" He all but screamed.

"Why won't it Yugi-kun?"

"Because I have to kill you! I have to protect others!"

His voice broke off under a soft sob. How pathetic. "But I can't…"

"You don't have to kill me, Yugi-kun. Why don't you see that? I haven't tried to kill you, so why should you need me dead?"

"Because you are a monster." Yugi whispered hoarsely, those cool finger tips gliding along his flesh took quite a lot of the punch out of the statement.

"You keep saying that Yugi-kun, but do you believe it?"

Yugi nodded. He did believe it. Nothing human could withstand being pumped full of lead. Nothing human could put him to sleep, nothing human could hold him so completely in their arms and be calm about the situation.

Nothing human could stand to touch Yugi. He was a murderer. A killer. Dangerous.

The human's tears were gradually drying up and the true coldness of Yami's hands and the wind made him shiver and press against the vampire more for body heat.

Yami sighed softly, brushing his fingers through Yugi's tricoloured hair.

"You hate me?"

Yugi swallowed.

No.

He didn't hate Yami.

He couldn't seem to hate Yami… it just wouldn't work, because… because he understood Yami.

He had never understood a vampire's reasoning before, usually there was no time to understand their reasoning, they were pissed and coming at him with claws and fangs and there was only the will to survive.

Yami had never come at him with claws or fangs; in fact, Yugi had never even seen Yami's fangs.

Did Yami have fangs?

Was he old enough to go without?

This question brought sudden curiosity to Yugi, 'did Yami have fangs?'

Yugi leaned back in the vampire's arms and reached up to Yami's mouth, prying the vampire's surprised lips apart and cocking his head to peer inside.

Aside from his sharper than need be canines, there was no sign of fangs in Yami's mouth.

Yugi blinked. "How do you drink blood without fangs?"

Yami made an 'ahh' sound to make Yugi move his fingers.

Yugi did so, hurriedly. Did Yami's whole mouth turn to jagged points? That would be sickening.

As Yugi watched, entranced, Yami's canines grew downward slightly and curved a little, perfect for neck biting. And then they seemed to melt back to normal just as fast.

Yugi reached up and poked Yami's canine. There was no response. He dragged his finger over the bone, but it was smooth.

"That's kind of a cool ability."

Yami nodded, suckling seductively on Yugi's fingers before moving Yugi's fingers with his own hand as the boy didn't take them away himself.

"Hai, I control my shape and form utterly."

Yugi hmmed, absently wiping his tingling digits on his shirt. "I bet you turn into a salivating monster on the rampage if you don't…"

Okay, so really he wanted an excuse to kick the shit through Yami or get killed in the process, but it was a worthy shot.

Yami shook his head. "I don't go on rampages, I can't lose control of my body; I'm mentally incapable of it."

Yugi blinked in shock, sitting back further. "You're so sane that you have so much control that you CAN'T go insane?"

Not that, that made sense, but… it sounded impossible.

Yami nodded. "Something like that; if I were a few thousand years younger than it might still be possible, but I've tried and it doesn't work."

Yugi shook his head in disbelief. "You have to be like, the root of all vampires."

Yami laughed. "I highly doubt it. I'm not that old."

Yugi shivered at the thought of meeting a vampire 'that' old. "What can kill you, though? I'm pretty sure you're immune to all modern weapons."

Yami boinked Yugi on the nose.

"I'm old, not stupid Yugi-kun. I may love you, but that love extends to existences, nothing further. I'm not about to tell you my one weakness."

Yugi scrunched up his nose and pouted. "Teaser."

Yami got a wicked look in his eyes and he leaned over until little more than a breath separated them. "You know you want me…" He purred.

Yugi swallowed hard; he suddenly felt very, very, very vulnerable.

"I don't." He whispered back; damn, if he didn't know he was lying.

In truth, the feel of Yami against him was intoxicating, the touch of those familiar hands…

He wasn't up to killing anyone in the state he was in anyway. He could hardly run a block and a half without getting tired, but to take on Yami? He didn't stand a chance.

It didn't occur to Yugi until right then, that at the distance between them, if he were to shoot Yami in the chest, there wouldn't be much heart left.

His hand twitched as he reached for his gun.

Yami obviously realized what Yugi was going for and grabbed the human's wrist, squeezing slightly. "Bad, Yugi-kun. Tch, lying and going for a weapon… I'm afraid I'm going to have to punish you, my little gem." The perverted gleam in his eyes really didn't help the sudden urge to squirm that overcame Yugi.

"D-don't!" Yugi whimpered out, more in desperation than anything else.

Yami shook his head, all seriousness apart from the, well, everything. "Oh no, I'm going to have to tie you down and have my evil monstrous ways with you now." He thought for a moment. "And that could very well involve some cream, handcuffs and being naked. No, I'm afraid you won't enjoy it one little bit, especially the part where we masturbate; preferably if you don't drag me into the cupboard like last time…"

Yugi blushed bright red and stopped squirming. "It was your idea to do it in the cupboard! I expressly remember telling you before hand that it was too cramped! But nooooooo, would you listen? Of course not! And then you just fell asleep. You know how utterly cramped it was in there?"

Yami was chuckling at Yugi's response. "But you shouldn't have looked so scrumptious under me! Really, you encouraged me!"

"Nani? Did I have a sticker on my forehead saying 'let's have sex in the cupboard!'?" Yugi asked incredulously.

Yami laughed more, kissing Yugi softly, Yugi couldn't help the gut reaction to kiss back, although he tried to resist, his body gave up, there was no point in stopping Yami from kissing him, the vampire seemed to get the kiss weather Yugi wanted it or not.

"Hmm, you know, I don't remember; why don't we try again and I can answer you afterward?"

"You'll make any excuse to get into my pants, won't you!!?"

"Let me think about that for a minute… yes."

Yami turned his plum eyes down on Yugi and the human amazed as those orbs began to swirl. "Hop on my bike with me and come with me, Yugi-kun." He said.

It made perfect sense to go with Yami and have hot wild kinky sex, hell; he would have liked nothing better.

It didn't make sense to resist; after all, he was in no condition to resist.

Yami could hold him, and be with him, why should his morals complain? He was in a totally different time! Society had accepted vampires to the point of electing Yami as president of the country.

Why shouldn't he?

Vampire was long dead… Yami could protect him from that kind of thing ever happening again.

Yami would be there for him.

Yugi probably could have shaken the spell off, but he didn't want to… or rather, he thought he didn't want to. But everything made perfect sense; those deep plum eyes would protect him.

The smaller was dragged to his feet by the vampire, Yami helped Yugi sit on the vampire's red bike in front of him.

Pressed up against Yami's chest, all safe and protected, only briefly did Yugi wonder if Yami had known who the rider of the white bike was, as the human saw the machine roll by from the corner of his eye, but the question vanished as Yami began to drive and whisper soothingly to Yugi.

~

Yami's mansion was fascinating. Every wall was a different color, every color contrasting to make you feel like you were walking down a swirling spiral. The occasional paintings on the walls were often splotchy colors or explosions of vibrant paints. The carpet was a dull grey. There were no lights on throughout the whole complex, but moonlight shone down into the many hallways through big, ceiling to floor windows that cast enough light for Yugi to see fairly well by.

Yami lead the spellbound human by the hand, down several corridors and across a courtyard. They passed several vampires who all held what looked like squirt guns, but probably weren't, that all eyed Yugi off, as if they simply didn't like him for existing. Then into a foyer and up five sets of stairs, Yugi stopped the moment they got to the top and bent over, muscles shaking softly at the exertion that the tendons couldn't handle because of how fresh from the preservation the boy was.

Yami allowed him to rest for a moment before helping Yugi up and walking down another corridor.

It was an interesting sensation, to be rolled under by a vampire; Yugi still had control over his actions, but he felt an undying need to not do anything unless Yami asked him to, primarily, the little voice in the back of his head did all the talking, and Yami would stop to look at Yugi strangely every now and then when he spoke back to it, but the human was actually quite oblivious to these looks until finally Yami let his curiosity get the better of him.

"Who are you talking to, Yugi-kun?"

Yugi turned his soft eyes on Yami. "No one, Yami-kun."

Yami frowned. "But you're having a conversation with someone, right?"

Yugi smiled serenely and shook his head. "No, I'm not talking to anyone. I'm talking to the voice in my head."

Yami frowned deeper. "The what?"

"The voice in my head."

"But you just said you weren't talking to anyone…"

"I'm not."

"But you're talking to the voice inside your head…"

"Hai."

"Who is the voice inside your head, then?" Yami drew the question out.

"It's not anyone. It's just the voice in my head. It's very perverted too. Sometimes I ask questions that it thinks of."

Yami looked as if he was getting a headache. "I don't understand…"

Yugi smiled like a doll and petted Yami's hand. "You don't hear voices because you're sane, Yami-kun, that's why you don't understand."

Yami stopped moving and Yugi stopped too. The vampire frowned and looked down at the human. Yugi smiled back up. He was sure Yami wasn't angry at him.

"Are you saying that the voice in your head is like a mental derangement?" Yami asked in a deadly serious tone.

Yugi nodded. "Ano… it's just a voice, it doesn't do anything but make comments and chatter. It is a 'mild form of mental instability'. It can't get any worse, or better."

Yami drew the boy closer and kissed the human softly, thumbs smoothing over Yugi's cheeks as he cupped the human's chin. Yugi tilted his head slightly and opened his mouth to let the vampire kiss him deeply. Yami had a way of making to most lovely pleasant sensations run through his body.

Yami pulled back after a moment. "So you didn't survive that experience, did you? You didn't come out 'alright'. Hm, leave it to you to leave that kind of information out."

Yugi just smiled pleasantly. "How much longer do we have to walk, Yami-kun?"

Yami sighed, kissing Yugi's knuckles. "You're like a doll. Not much further." He commented.

They began walking again, someone appeared at the end of the hallway and began walking toward them.

"Yami-sama! Seto said that you have a positive agreement on the trades with Egypt. Oh! I see you are with Yugi-sama, I shall leave now if you wish." The figure spoke clearly and loudly as they approached.

Yami waved a hand. "Yugi is under my powers, he's not paying much attention. Tell me, did they find it?"

The figure was in view now, it was the caftan wearing vampire from so long ago, Yugi recognized, but the vampire had a white hood on that obscured his face.

"No, but there is evidence that it was taken a while ago, the tomb was positively identified, but… I'm sorry to say, you're not going to get it. We were all betting on it being in the tomb."

Yami cursed softly; thumb caressing the back of Yugi's hand. "I suppose it was too much to hope for, but at least the agreement means that if it turns up on the market anywhere I might get it."

Yugi smiled up at Yami. "Are we there yet?" he asked boredly.

Yami smiled. "Almost, Yugi-kun. Very well, thank you for the information, Marik, enjoy the night."

"I will, Yami-sama." The caftan dressed vampire bowed again and came back up, hood falling back.

Yugi's violet eyes widened slightly before Yami's effect rolled off him in a wave of pure terror.

The human began to scream.

~ To Be Continued…

Sweet notes: Lol, I have a few plot ends that are going to be hard to tie up because I don't like the way I've explained things, but, for those of you who thought Yami was the white biker, you are mistaken, I still have *counts and winces* TWO more people left of the characters to drag in, namely Otogi and Honda.

You'll understand why Yugi starts screaming if you read the beginning of chapter 9 of exfoliation closely.*chuckles* It strongly relates to the whole 'wow you look identical' theme. And I just gave it away didn't I? *sigh*

Well, the next chapter has some vulnerable Yugi-ness in it and a fat, juicy lemon.
