Ch. 13: Adventurous Memories
~Domino: Modern Era~
The school bell rang to signal lunch as everyone swarmed in the halls. Only one student stayed in an empty classroom.
Atem dipped a paint brush in some light blue paint before looking at the campus, studied it for a moment, than gently stroked the brush to the canvas. There was a knock on the door along with a voice.
“Ya in there Atem?” Joey asked.
“Yes, come in if you like.” Atem responded while the blonde female entered.
“Hey, whatcha doin'?” Joey asked.
“Painting.” He answered.
“Mind if I look?”
“Not at all.”
She looked at the painting and gasped. “Damn Atem, I didn't know ya were an artist.”
The canvas held a painting of Yugi in the Egyptian light blue dress with the late afternoon sun shining through a window. “Neither did I…” He said as he sadly looked at the painting. `The vision I had… She looked so happy.'
Joey noticed the sad distant look. “Hey, cheer up will ya! We all know she's fine!”
Atem told everyone what happened and what his visions were showing him. Everyone couldn't believe it at first, but Ishizu was the eye witness and Malik knew her older sister would never lie. “I know…” He said while dipping a short brush into some white and added some shine to some parts of the painting. `But it's still hard.' He thought.
“Well, ya know dat we're always here for ya.” Joey said. “I mean, we're practically in da same boat.”
He smiled. “Thank you Joey.” Was all he said as he continued his painting. Joey left him be as she walked out of the classroom missing a tear falling from his eyes. When he didn't hear footsteps from outside, he broke down crying.
Joey walked out of the school building and met up with the others.
“How is he?” Tristan asked.
Joey shook her head. “That guy is so hard to read.” She sighed. “But I could tell he's having it worse than us.”
“Well duh!” Malik said. “He and Yugi are best friends since the third grade! Of course he's taking this hard!”
Joey was taken back by this. “I know that! I'm just concerned.”
“Oh, and I'm not!”
“I didn't say that!”
“Maybe not in words!”
“STOP IT!” Ryou shouted, surprising everyone. “Fighting and arguing about it isn't going to help anything.” She took a deep breath as she calmed down. “Besides Yugi wouldn't want to have us fighting is she were here.”
Everyone silently agreed.
“Sorry for snapping at you Joey.” Malik said.
“Dat's alright. Sorry for whatever I said that got ya so pissed in the first place.”
Malik sighed. “That's okay… But it's just depressing without her, ya know?”
“Yeah,” Tristan said. “Usually we would hang out here and talk about school and other crap.”
Joey, who couldn't take anymore depressing thoughts, growled. “Come on guys! Let's do something after school!”
“What?” Tristan said for everyone.
“Go to the arcade, walk on the beach, go to Kaibaland to annoy and embarrass Seto, just something!”
“Why?” Malik asked.
“Why? I'll tell you why! If Yuge would see us now she would have told us to not worry and have a least one or two days of fun!”
Everyone wasn't too sure but they thought about it and it maybe a possibility.
“We should bring Atem along as well, he's gong to need all the healing.” Tristan pointed out.
“We would have to make sure we're somewhere that won't trigger a sore spot.”
“Guys…” Atem said behind Tristan, who was startled. “The bell just rang.”
Everyone looked at their watches.
“Ah! Crap!” Malik said. “We got two minutes!” She ran up to the building, while dragging Ryou.
Tristan instantly freaked and ran faster than the two girls.
“So, ah…” Joey started.
“I would like to go to the museum after school.” Atem said. “And speaking of which… you go thirty seconds.”
“Holy shit!” Joey said as she ran like the devil was after her.
Atem stood there, not worried about making to class. Since he's proven to be higher ranked in intelligence, he didn't need to go to school. Instead he sat down under a tree, where he was hidden from view. He looked at his cell phone and looked at the text message that Ishizu left.
`You must come after school! You really need to see this!'
He didn't understand the message, but his heart felt heavy and the need to know was plaguing his mind from earlier the same day. `What could be so important that I need to see it?' He thought with a sigh as he decided to call Grandpa Mouto up.
“Mouto Game Shop residents.”
“Hey Grandpa Mouto.”
“Atem! This is a nice surprise.”
“Yes, it is.”
“You sound exhausted my boy.”
“Just on a minor level of depression.”
“I see.”
“Anything new with you lately?”
“Oh, business is slow. Testing days you know.”
“Yeah.”
“How are you? Are your visions bothering you?”
“I'm fine and I haven't had another vision as of yet.”
“How's Yugi in your last vision?”
“She's happy.” Atem said, a bit happy himself. “She learned how to sew and used some magic.”
“Learned what now?!”
Atem had to laugh. “Magic. And it seems that the `Pharaoh me' is making sure she's happy and unharmed.”
“Sounds like you.”
Atem nodded. “Yeah, seems that way.”
“Well, I better let you go then, I have a lot of unpacking to do.”
“Don't hurt yourself like last time.”
“When was that?”
“Back at Kaiba's Grand Prix when you hurt your back and some Chinese chick helped you in return for you to follow her orders.”
“… You're not going to live this down, are you?”
“I'll even mention it when you're six feet under.”
“Well, I'll see you later than.”
“Yes.” With that they hung up and Atem was left with nothing to do. So, he decided to take a nap.
~Later~
“Hey Atem!” Tristan called.
“Yo! Atem! Wake ya lazy ass up!” Lisa shouted, which proved to be more effective.
“Ow.” Atem said. “Why did you yell?”
“Because you were out like an expired light bulb.” Bakura said dully.
“What time is it?”
“Ten minutes after the damn bell.” Lisa said as Atem yawned and got up.
“Well, now that I'm up, let's go to the museum.”
“Can't, I have to head to work.” Tristan said.
“Being a cashier for your girlfriend's store isn't exactly a job.” Joey said.
“And being a maid for your boyfriend's mansion is?”
“Watch it bud!” Lisa said. “I happen to be a cook over there!”
“How about all of you shut the hell up!” Malik said. “You're giving me one hell of a headache.”
Atem sighed.
“Yo.” Bakura said gaining the other man's attention. “Did you have any other visions lately?”
Atem told about his role on his visions and seemed more solemn than usual. “Not as of yet.” He said.
Bakura looked at him for a moment when Ryou came out of the building.
“Bakura,” Atem said, “don't let a five thousand year old vision question who you are today.”
They looked at the arguing four as Ryou tried to place peace between them.
“At least you have what the other Bakura could not have or steal. And she's right there being the peace maker.”
Bakura did an awkward smirk. “A very good point.” He said as he looked at Atem again. “Go on ahead, we'll catch up.”
Atem nodded as he walked out of the school gates. `Maybe I should avoid going to school for awhile.' He thought with a sigh as he looked at the building. `So many memories were created in that one building.' He remembered the very first day of his freshmen year with Yugi, and a start of something that no ordinary person or a group of people will ever experience.
^Flashback^
-Atem's POV-
Yugi and I looked at the building before us. “Well this is it Yugi, we're in high school.” I said while Yugi held onto my arm, which she usually does when she's nervous or scared. “Don't worry Yugi. I'm getting a feeling we're going to have an amazing year.” I wrapped an arm around her. “And we'll be together through it all!” Yugi smiled and nodded. “Now, let's go find our schedules!” I grabbed her hand. “We don't want to give a bad impression by being late.” Months passed and I heard about my father's death. It was after I moved back to my apartment was when everything became an adventure.
After Pegasus took Grandpa Mouto's soul, I was forced to accept the invitation to go to Duelist Kingdom, a duelist paradise some may say, but some would see it as a competition to tick everyone off. Each duel he played gave me a lesson and played better each time as well. But when I was faced with Kaiba, I had to choose. If I won, I would kill him, but if I lose I wouldn't get Grandpa Mouto's soul back like I promised Yugi I would. As I was about to make a winning blow, Yugi stopped me and I lost, sparing Kaiba. I thought I lost my best friend's trust in me then and getting Grandpa Mouto's soul back seemed pointless if it wasn't for Mai's help. Mai is a friend of ours we met and she loves to travel. Earlier I helped her gain back her star chips, which you have to collect ten in order to go into the castle where the semi-finals and finals were held. She had a spare ten that would allow me to be qualified, but I refused the offer, feeling guilty for what I nearly done. But Yugi took the challenge, she was going to try to win the star chips in a duel. I was still out of it as she dueled against Mai, who was a pretty tough opponent. About half way in the duel, I was starting to snap out of my guilt trip as I saw how well she was holding out against the older blonde girl.
“I have two great teachers!” She said after Mai asked her how she learned to play. “One is my grandpa, and the second is my best friend, Atem.” She looked at me, smiling and unshed tears were shining in her eyes. “And I refuse to think little of anyone because they made a mistake!” She said as she faced Mai, drops of her tears flung in mid air when she sharply turned her head. She had a look of confidence when she dueled, like I would usually have. I noticed that Mai sneaked a card off of her playing field and placed her hand on top of her deck, a sign of surrender. She handed her spare ten star chips to her, who gave them to me.
“But why?” I asked her.
“It pains me to see you look so hopeless.” She said as she clicked each star chip into its socket in the glove that every duelist were given. “Come on Atem!” She poked me and dashed. “You're it! Last one to the castle is left out!”
When we were allowed into the castle, we had an unusual dinner. If you were a participating duelist in the semi-finals, you were greeted by a plastic Millennium Eye submerged from your soup while other guests didn't have one.
“That's not right!” Joey said, one of the finalists, when she saw the eye appear. It freaked her out to miss dinner that night, which was a first.
We opened the `eyes' and found numbers in it, which happens to set up who will be dueling who in the semi-finals. I was facing Mai and Joey was facing Bandit Keith, an American with both a bad attitude and a huge grudge against Pegasus.
“Atem…?” Yugi said as we both shared a room with separate beds.
“Hmm…?”
“Are you still guilty for what happened earlier?”
I may have snapped out of my guilt, but my pride as a duelist was a shame. Who was I when Kaiba stood on the ledge that was a good drop towards the rocks at the bottom. He had to get in to get Moukaba, who was kidnapped by Pegasus' men and he wanted to challenge me again and won. “I would have killed him Yugi.” I said as I faced away from her.
“But you didn't-“
“Because you stopped me! You stopped me from doing a terrible act!” I shouted. I don't mean to shout at her, but I was angry at myself. “It's a wonder why you haven't bunked with Joey or Tristan, or Ryou, or Bakura!”
“Because I care about you…” She said softly and kindly as she sat at the edge of my bed. “And I care because we're friends, and as such I'm supposed to help and support you…”
I stayed silent as she embraced me.
“Atem, please don't do this… don't hold your pain in like this… I-I don't like it, please… Atem?”
I could tell she was going to cry, and, naturally as a good friend, I turned to look at her and wiped away the tears she tried to fight back. “How come you're keeping your pain in?” I asked, which sounded very unemotional.
She let the tears go. “Because I'm trying to be strong, like you.” She said as she cried on the sheets.
I embraced her and said. “You are strong, you just don't realize it.
The next day came and I faced Mai, who was giving me a lecture about getting over myself and play a great game. It was a rocky start and seemed to smooth out a bit once that lecture and what Yugi said finally sank in. I made a mistake by being overly confident in my winning streak. The one thing I don't understand is how come Yugi isn't afraid of me for what I nearly did. I manage to completely snap out of my guilt when Yugi cheered, completely happy and unafraid. I finally understood the bond we have as I drew card that would surely help me win, but Mai surrendered, knowing that it's pointless to duel me any longer.
It was then Joey's turn and she didn't have the prize money card. The rules are that you need one of the two cards to let the other contestant know that you're qualified to be dueling. I had the blank card, which if I faced Pegasus and lost, it will be where my soul will be, while Joey had the card with the prize money, or should have anyway. She was allowed fifteen minutes to find that card and return to the arena. All of us were worried, because the prize money was enough to help her younger sister's eye operation. There were ten seconds remaining and she hadn't shown up yet, when she did there was only one second left.
“I'm going to kill you for scaring me like that, you bitch!” Tristan called.
“Can it Tristan!” She called back as she presented her card, which surprised Keith.
As it turns out, Keith had taken Joey's card while we were asleep and was cheating during the duel, but Joey still won. When that happened, Keith tried to threaten Pegasus to give him the prize money. But the card creator had a different idea and pressed a button which cause to make a trap door appear beneath Keith and we never saw him again. With Keith eliminated, it was between me and Joey, and it was a tough duel. Each of us tried our best strategies during the game, but I won in the end. There were no hard feelings after that and everyone congratulated both of us for an amazing duel.
“Now it's down to Pegasus.” I said.
Everyone agreed on that and told me to take him down, but Yugi said something different. “Be careful.”
I told her I will be, but that was before I knew who I was up against. I knew that eye of his has a power to read minds and would effortlessly force a soul out of someone's body, but I didn't know it could curse someone as well. When he managed to isolate Yugi's lungs, I was pissed off, but I had to focus. About five minutes into the duel, I was in deep trouble. He told me that if I'm not careful, not only will I fail to get Grandpa Mouto's soul back, but mine and Yugi's soul will be taken as well. I wasn't going to let that happen, but I was running out of options and hope until Yugi managed to say something.
“Don't give up Atem! I know you can find a way around this! You always do!”
I needed to hear that. That's the beauty with her, she always seems to know exactly what to say at a time like this. In fact I countered the mind reading by not looking at the cards and placing then on the field, making Pegasus really thrown off. It was a risky move, but it was worth it. “I win Pegasus…” I said as his life points went down to zero. Pretty soon Kaiba and Moukaba, whose souls were also taken out, went back into their bodies and were reunited. “How's Yugi?!” I asked as I ran up to the group.
“I'm no doctor, but I believe she's going to be okay.” Bakura said. “She's just going to be out for a while.”
After knowing that fact the guy in a black suit came up and handed me the prize money, which I handed to Joey.
“Nah, ya earned it.” She said.
“I didn't come here for the money Joey.” I said.
She took it gratefully and thanked me.
And, after confirming that Grandpa's soul has indeed returned to the body, we went on Kaiba's helicopter and headed back home. I held onto Yugi the whole way as we both slept peacefully, unaware of the next adventure that awaits us.
^End of Flashback^
“Our first adventure together.” I said with a bitter smile as I walked up the steps to the museum. Ishizu was waiting for me in her office. “You have something to show me?”
Ishizu nodded. “Yes, come with me.” She said as we walked down towards the restricted area.
“This reminds me back to the time Yugi and I came here.” I said.
“Yes.” Ishizu said. “And you didn't believe me when I told you that you were the reincarnation of the Pharaoh.”
“My bad then.” I said sarcastically.
She giggled, than became serious. “Wait here.” She said as she continued to walk in the dark hallways.
As I waited, I remembered that time.
^Flashback^
It was about two months after the Duelist Kingdom ordeal and I flew in from Cairo to enjoy the rest of my time here in Domino until summer started. I was over at Cairo for an interview from one of the archeologists that Grandpa Mouto had connections to. “Yes! Thank you Grandpa Mouto!” I said as I practically jumped out of the gate, causing almost everyone to look at me, and ran out to the baggage claim to meet up with Grandpa Mouto and Yugi. “Hey!” I called happily as I jumped the last five steps of the stairs.
“Welcome back Atem!” Yugi said happily. She's always happy to see me, and that always makes me feel better.
And I was twice as happy seeing her. I picked her up and spinned her around once before placing her down and hugged her. “It's great to be back!” I said as we quickly got my suitcase and get out of the airport.
“Well, judging from how chipper you are,” Grandpa said, “I'd say the interview went well.”
“Not well, great!” I said.
“How did it go?” She said, matching my excitement.
“It went so well, that I may have to go to a trip to one of the dig sites they're working on!”
“No way!”
“Way!”
“Sounds like you're going to have your dream come true at a young age.” Grandpa said.
“Well he has proved that he's way beyond college level. Even the law schools in America want him to go there because of his amazing records.” Yugi said.
I blushed when she mentioned that. “Aww… Don't embarrass me Yugi.” We laughed at that. But that changed when we reached to the game shop.
“I can't stand this!” Grandpa said as he glared at the building not far from the shop. “I've been stung by scorpions, bitten by snakes, survived a cave-in, and what do I get?!” He pointed to the building. “Another game shop! And not far from mine!”
While he was doing that, I asked Yugi what was up.
“While you were at Egypt getting an interview, this game store opened up and now Grandpa thinks he's in competition with the store.” Yugi explained.
“I see…” I said than added. “Want to check it out?”
“Atem!”
“What? We have to know what your grandpa is up against, right?”
She thought about it. “I guess it wouldn't do any harm to just look.”
When Grandpa sent us to do errands, we went up to the store and just looked at the building.
“Hmm… This one sells the latest games.” I said.
“That's what concerns Grandpa.”
“As long as he has Duel Monsters cards, he had a fighting chance.” I said as I saw a poster of a game called `Dungeon Dice Monsters'. “Dungeon Dice Monsters? I never heard that game before.”
“I heard people talking about it, but no one seems to know how it works and the store has tons of them but not one sold.”
“Must be hurting the owner, huh?”
She shrugged. “I don't know, they've been open for a week now.”
“So it's a slow start, nothing for us to worry about.” I said, completely unaware that I was being watched.
The next day came around and we heard that there's a new student in one of the classrooms that are making the guys go crazy. Joey, before she and Seto got together, wanted to check out what was making the guys go bananas. You might say she's jealous at the time. That's the day we met Duke, who made Joey a complete fool in front of the whole classroom, but invited us to the game store she owned. When we showed up, Joey was overly confident. We told her to be careful, but she was in `la la land' and it was difficult to give her `any' advice when she gets that way.
When they faced each other in a duel, it was over before it even started. I don't think I rolled my eyes so much in one day, and poor Yugi tried to reason with her, but it was in vain and Joey lost, this time on a live broad cast. And if that wasn't enough humiliation, Duke said that Joey will be her servant for a whole month, wearing a puppy outfit. I had all I could stand and challenged her to a game. She agreed, but she chooses the game and the stakes which I agreed to. The stakes were that if I win, Joey gains back her freedom, if I loose, I was stripped from my title as King of Games and be announced as a cheater. And the game was Dungeon Dice Monsters.
“Aren't you going to lay down the rules?!” Yugi called.
“I will, as we go along.” Duke said.
“But-“
“It's okay Yugi.” I told her, even though I knew I was in deep shit. Not only that, but I was being broadcast, something that I didn't have to worry about back at that damn island. Double crap. I had one hell of a time learning the rules and it took a lot of patience to not throw these dice at Duke, who was annoying me with telling me the rules `after' I do something! But in the middle of the game I got the rules down and was turning the tables, which surprised her and making Joey `howl' with delight. In the end, I managed to win her game and Grandpa Mouto came by and said he saw the whole thing.
Duke apologized and said her reason for challenging me. It turns out that Pegasus helped her with her game creation and when she heard that I beaten him, the card game creator, she thought that I might've cheated some how, which I wouldn't be caught dead in some low down whore house doing something so completely low. Well, to end it, Duke and Grandpa settled to a partnership and he never complained about the store ever again. And, thanks to the broadcasting, her store has gone up with the purchase of her game. You could say she was busy afterward. But what happen two days later was a whole new beginning.
Yugi and I were heading to a soccer game at school, even though it let out for the summer, when we were stopped by this creepy fortune teller, or what it appears to be, when the bastard knocked the table and gagged me before going into the alley. I had no idea where this asshole was taking me until we entered an abandoned warehouse.
“You're not that bitch.” He said, his voice really off.
“No shit Sherlock! Now what the hell was that for?!” I shouted, really ticked that this guy grabbed me random, but was really pissed off when he called Yugi a bitch!
“To challenge you to a duel.”
“Well you're going to have one!” I said, a challenge mood rising. `This bastard was going to kidnap Yugi, so I have no choice to duel.' I thought as we started the game. About seconds in the duel, I noticed something familiar. “Show yourself! Bandit Keith!” I recognized the deck structure he had, filled with machine monsters.
He lifted the hood that covered the top part of his head and there he was, but something was completely off. There was a glowing eye on his forehead and he looked like he was in a trance or being controlled.
Then Yugi came in, how she followed me here is beyond me.
“Ah! I see that the bait came to rescue you.” He said. “Now both of you shall perish.”
“Leave her out of this Keith!”
“Keith? The moron was barely alive when I first found him.”
“Who are you?! And what do you want?!”
“I'm called Marik and I want to get rid of you before I set out on domination on mankind!”
`Okay… this guy is a complete loon…' I thought as I continue to duel.
“Before I make my move.” Said `Marik'. “I'll like to do one thing…”
Keith raised his hand and aimed it towards me, where wisps of shadows held me in place by my legs and Yugi was scared when the same shadows surround her. But after he did that, the real Bandit Keith seem to have gotten through.
But I couldn't tell as I continued to duel. When I did figure out the change, Keith grabbed a pipe and started hitting the machines in the buildings and was about to hit Yugi out of blind fear of having someone in his head. But I managed to block the hit, but I was knocked out, and to make things worse, the machines that Keith beaten up, exploded and set the warehouse on fire. The bastard was able to get out safely but Yugi struggled to get us out. I was out cold through the ordeal, but Joey told me the whole thing.
She and Tristan were just about to bust down the door when Keith madly ran out. They saw Yugi supporting me limp body on her back as parts of the warehouse started to fall. Since I was slightly both heavier and taller than her, you could imagine how she struggled to get from one point to another.
I woke up in the hospital about three hours after the ordeal and I saw Yugi working on the puzzle. When she saw that I was awake, and asked if I was okay.
Two days later, we hang out while everyone else was busy with work. Tristan with the cashier in Duke's store, Joey a part time waitress and part time cashier at Burger World, and Ryou and Bakura were assistant's librarians in the University. After a good half a day of doing completely random stuff, Yugi and I headed to the museum because it was our favorite spot in the city. When we walked through the Egyptian exhibit, she was trying to get something out of her pocket and it fell.
“Get back here!” She said as she ran after it.
“Yugi?!” I said as I chased after her.
The thing was a coin that had the `Eye of Horus' on it, I gave it to her after I got back to Domino. The damn thing rolled down to a room that led down stairs and we followed it. The room was pitch black until the room lit up. We completely forgotten about the coin after we saw what was on the wall. It was a stone tablet with hieroglyphics of me and Kaiba.
“Hello Yugi and Atem…” Ishizu said, the first time we met. She explained the history of the tablet and warned of the dangers that lay ahead of us as well as letting us know about her Millennium item, the Millennium Taunk.
^End of Flashback^
The lights came on and I saw a stone tablet, but this one was different. “Yugi?!” I said as I saw the hieroglyphic version of her in her dancer's outfit. `This is the part where she came to the palace!' I thought as I saw her and what looks like me. But there wasn't one stone tablet, there was a bunch of them going across the hall way. I looked at each one… and each one was exactly what my visions showed. As soon as Ishizu came out and the gang appeared, I felt my head spinning and soon I blacked out.

Feeling sad and lonely
Cause I can't find you
Call your telephone
Ad there's never no answer
Said you love me
Kissed me
We were in heaven
Said I'm sorry
Love you, want you forever
Every night I look at the sky
Call your name
And wonder where you are
Every night I look at the sky
Baby, miss you
Won't you come back
