Like a shooting star
Across the midnight sky
Wherever you are
You're gonna see me fly
Like a shooting star
Across the midnight sky
Wherever you are
You're gonna see me fly!

Across the midnight sky~!

Where were you to hold my hand
Do the things that we had planned
Yes, I need you by my side
When things go crazy

I just need to know you care
Guaranteed that you'll be there
When I wake up in the night
Will you be my guiding light?

I don't care how far
I'll take a plane tonight
Just tell me where you are
And everything's gonna be alright

Like a shooting star
Across the midnight sky
Gonna fly
Just to be with you tonight
Like a shooting star
Across the midnight sky
Gonna fly
Just to be with you tonight

Ch.21: Pain Exchanged First Kiss
~Modern Day: Yugi's Room~
Atem looked through a few albums that he found under her bed. He looked through at one picture where they were in front of the game shop. He had his arm around her and sported the `V' sign while she looked like she was laughing. `That was the day we headed out to middle school.” He thought with a bitter smile. He turned another page and saw a picture of him and his father in a car, while he was at the driver's seat. `I was learning how to drive…' He chuckled. `At age twelve.' He remembered how fast he was in the middle of nowhere and nearly gave his father and Yugi a heart attack, but they still had a great time. He turned another page and saw a birthday party. He, Yugi, Joey and Tristan were there. `Joey nearly ate twenty pizzas that day.' He laughed when he saw that and the picture that was taken recently with the whole gang. They had paint on themselves because the shop needed re-painting. Joey and Tristan got into one of their friendly arguments and started a paint fight when they accidentally got some on Lisa, who went into a fit and chased them around the shop, getting everyone in the process. Everyone had a great time in the end, when everything settled down.

He then went to the last page, where there was a picture of him from elementary to now. His kid pictures made up part of the border while his recent picture was in the center

“She always thought of you.” Grandpa said as he walked into the room. “Ever since you two met, she has always looked up to you when it seems like everything is crashing down hard on her.”

Atem went back to the first page where there was a picture of him, her and his father in the water park, the day the doctors told him that he had a rare illness. They were celebrating their last year of middle school and his father was taking a couple years off from the dig. She had her long hair in a braid and was wearing a pretty light blue swimsuit and he had his arm around her shoulder, once again sporting the `V' sign while his father was behind them, smiling a goofy smile that was very rare and appropriate for occasions such for a day like that. “Same goes for me…”

“Well! How about some dinner?”

“Is it really that late?” He said as he looked at the window, where he could see the pitch black night sky.

Grandpa laughed. “Oh ho! Yes it is, but I haven't had company in sometime, and I need to make sure my cooking doesn't kill me!” With that, the old man exited the room.

Atem smiled sadly as he took one last look of the picture of him and Yugi at the beach, holding a ton of shells before closing it and headed down stairs when he doubled over when he felt like he was being punched about a large number of times. `What the hell?!' He thought as he covered his eyes and focused until he saw a huge red dragon and snapped back to reality. `That was Slifer…!' He thought as he stayed on the ground for a moment longer before slowly getting up and headed over to the kitchen where he doubled over again, this time he couldn't breathe for a moment and it took him awhile to recover. `Damn that hurt!!' He thought. `Is there a fight going on?' He remembered Slifer. `A duel is going on right now, and I'm feeling the same pain he is right now.' He held his chest. `Damn… What the hell is going on now?'

~Ancient Egypt~
I'll fight until the end!!” Atem said. “That is the duty of the Pharaoh!!

Shada looked shocked and said. “But…”

Atem looked at the dragon and held his chest while he thought. `Slifer is badly wounded… It's almost out of power…'

The people ran as the guards lead the people to the palace.

“My Master…” Shada said. “To the people the Pharaoh is the living embodiment of a god. His is like the Sun God Ra who shines with the light of hope. Your very existence lights the shadows of this world!”

“I'm not a god…” The Pharaoh said. “And I'll never… I'll never forgive him for trying to put out the lights of this world!” As he said that, the dragon moved ahead of the group.

`It can't be…' Shada thought. `Is he using the Sky Dragon as a decoy?!'

“What?!” Kalim said. “Wh-Why is he going so high out in the open?! He'll surely be attacked!”

`Why would he…?!' Seth thought.

In the canyons, Bakura chuckled as he thought. `I can see you… I can see everything under the night sky… Now, with one attack, I will eliminate the Pharaoh's ba, his life force, and when the ba dies, the ka dies too…' He then looked excited. `This is it, Pharaoh!! Die along with your god!' He then called out his attack. “Diabound, attack!! Spiral Wave!!” The huge blast appeared and completely obliterated the dragon causing the young king to double over and some blood came out of his mouth.

Great Pharaoh!” Shada said.

`Now…' Atem thought. `Seth…'

~Modern Day~
Atem dropped his plate and held onto the counter's edge.

“Atem!” Grandpa said as he went up to him. “What's-“ He was about to say when he saw a couple drops of blood on his floor. “Dear god…” he said when Atem fell to the ground. “Atem!!”

~Ancient Egypt~
Diabound's attack left some debris that showed his position and Seth noticed it and said. “That's where he's hiding! Duos! Pierce the darkness! Aura Sword!!” His monster threw it's sword towards the small energy ball.

`What…?!' Bakura thought as the sword hit the spot. A faint image of Diabound appeared.

`The sword hit Diabound dead on!!' Seth thought. `Now show yourself!!'

“Are you blind?” Bakura said, which caught both the young king and Seth's attention.

`What?!' Seth thought as he saw a monster that looked like an eyeball with bat wings. `Impossible…' He thought. `The sword hit a different ka…?!'

“Have you forgotten?” Bakura said. “Those who hold the Millennium Items can summon ka from the Shrine of Wedju! I barrowed a weakling that wouldn't cost me much ba! I knew you'd try something like that! I told you… you can't capture Diabound as long as the darkness exists! Now it's my turn…”

Atem collapsed on his horse as he tried to hold out long enough to recover and live. `Ra…' He thought. `The light of hope… The only thing that can defeat this darkness…' He then realized something. `Ra!!' But then he looked defeated. `But my ba is already…' He could feel like he was slipping away. `Gone…'

“Atem!” Heba ran up and saw the condition the young king was in. `Oh no…!' She thought. `Dear gods don't let him be…!'

~Modern Day~
“Atem! Hang on, help is on the way!” Grandpa called as the ambulance came.

Atem's eyes were slowly going down as he could hear his heart trying to keep him alive, but it was pointless.

As the paramedics looked at him, they told the elder that it was completely odd and it seems he won't make it and its going to take a miracle. “Wait a second!” Said a woman, making everyone look over…

~Ancient Egypt~
The Pharaoh felt something enter him, giving him strength and opened his eyes. What he saw was definitely a surprise to him. Heba had both of her hands on either side of his head and was kissing him, and was slightly glowing. He would have been startled and force his head back, but the life energy going in him was indescribable until she stopped and looked at him with tears of relief running down her face. At that moment, light appeared through the clouds.

`This light!' Bakura thought, completely lost. `Cutting through the clouds… Spearing the shadows!'

~Modern Day~
Atem got up with little ease and looked fine. He looked at the paramedics and said. “Hello, did I miss something?”

Grandpa was relieved but the paramedics still took him to the hospital.

`Damn it! Would these people please stop checking me before they stab me with something!' He thought when he remembered the feeling of Yugi's lips, which made his heart beat a little faster and he blushed, which gave him an excuse to take a nap thinking that he had a fever.

~Ancient Egypt~
Look!!” Said one of the guards that were chasing after Heba when she was running back to the group. “The light's shining on Diabound! It's coming into view!”

Kalim and Seth were speechless at what happened.

`This is…' Seth thought. `The third of the Great Gods of Egypt that answers only to the Pharaoh…'

Bakura was surprised and completely lost. “It's the middle of the night! Is that the sun?!” He said.

`It's over, Bakura!' Atem thought with a renounced sense of determinination. `I'll destroy your mad darkness named slaughter…' He held her hand. `With the power of my god! I call forth…' He took a deep breath and shouted. “The Sun Dragon Ra!!” A huge hawk-like dragon in the gold color descended from the sky and shone almost as brilliantly as the sun.

`The god of the sun!!' Bakura thought. `This can't be! The Pharaoh's ba was finished when I destroyed Slifer the Sky Dragon! He didn't have the power to summon a new god…' He then looked at the young girl that was beside the young ruler and growled to himself. `It's that bitch's doing!'

Atem and Heba looked at the brilliant sun dragon as he tightened his grip on her hand. `I can feel it…' eh thought. `This strength with her… the one the gods saved from death.' She returned the grip, as if she read his mind.

The people stopped running to look at the sight before them. “Night is changed into day…” Said a villager. “It's the power of the gods!!”

“Without the shadows,” Kalim said. “Diabound can't conceal itself! Now's our chance!!”

Bakura chuckled as he thought. `The god of the sun… too bad for you Diabound already has the power of a god…' He then called. “Thunder Force!!

“That's Slifer's!” Heba said while Atem was equally alarmed.

`He's already copied Slifer's power!!' He thought.

Bakura looked pleased. “Diabound steals a power from whoever he defeats, even if his opponent is a god! He'll take what he can get!” He then thought. `The Thunder Force will destroy the god of the sun!!' The attack was nearing the sun dragon.

Heba was scared… Scared that she was going to lose Atem and that awoke something deep inside her.

“Duos, my ka!” Seth called. “Attack now! I place all of my ba in your sword!” Just like he said, Duos's sword had more energy. “Aura Sword!!” His monster headed between the dragon and the attack. `If I hit with all my power at the very front of the Thunder Force, I may be able to deflect it…' As if on cue, his plan worked, surprising the thief.

`He changed its course with his puny ka!' Bakura thought.

`Seth!!' Atem and Heba thought at the same time.

`Great Pharaoh!!' Seth thought as he trying to recover from that.

“Ra attack!” Atem ordered and the dragon's body was then covered in flames.

Bakura was alarmed as he thought. `Ra's body is covered in fire!'

“The flames of my soul!!” Atem said. “I pour them all into this one blow!” The fire covered dragon then headed towards Diabound, which made Bakura surprised and scared. “God Phoenix!!” The attack completely obliterated Diabound. `It's over Bakura!' Atem thought. `I condemn you and your evil spirit to the darkness!'

Look!!” Said a guard. “Ra defeated Bakura's spirit Diabound!”

`The fire of the god will burn the ba of Bakura's soul…' Seth thought. `And leave nothing but ashes to scatter in Hell!

Bakura coughed out a huge amount of blood and collapsed on his stolen horse and was motionless.

~Modern Day~
“May I go home now?!” Atem said to the doctor, who was very new to the job.

“Well…” The doctor said as he looked at his clipboard. “There doesn't seem to be… anything wrong…”

“Okay then!” He said as he started to walkout of the room.

“W-Wait a-“

“Listen doc, I know you got patients that need more attention and, if I need to get my ass back here, I'll let you know.”

“W-Wait…”

“I'll be fine doc.” He turned with a cocky smirk. “In case if you haven't noticed, I'm really stubborn. If I have my mind on something, or a goal to aim on, I have my way to get there.” He then walked away, a bit quickly so he wouldn't be stopped.

As he got out of the hospital, he ran. He ran to his apartment and crashed on the couch. “Finally…” He said as he picked up the phone and let Grandpa Mouto know that he was fine and laid down. He couldn't put his finger on it, but he felt something bad was going to happen. `Might as well wait till it happens.' He thought. `As long as it doesn't involve Yugi.'

~Ancient Egypt~
The guards and the people cheered as Diabound was defeated. “We won!” “The Pharaoh, our god on earth, has brought the light of peace to this land!” “Look all of you! This light is the god's blessing!!

The priests were both shocked and amazed at the outcome of this battle. `Great Pharaoh…' Shada thought.

As the fire covered dragon went back to its original gold body, Atem thought. `Not I… it was the Sun Dragon Ra!! And also…' He looked at Heba, who sighed in huge relief. `Heba, who gave me strength and saved me when I was on my last legs!'

“You guys did it!” She said as she looked at the priests then at the young king, who shook his head.

We did it.” Atem corrected as he held her hand up, which he hadn't let go of yet.

She smiled. “But I wasn't much help!”

The young king shook his head. “That's where you are wrong. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have the strength to summon Ra.” He smiled. “We summoned Ra, together.”

She blushed and looked to the side bashfully.

`Gods she's so adorable!' He thought, no longer fighting his feelings towards her.

That's when she looked as though she saw a snake and looked back at him. “Something's wrong!” She said.

Atem looked at her and immediately knew she was right. Then all of a sudden the wind picked up and everything went into reverse. Bakura went back up along with the blood, as if it never happened. The sun dragon went backwards as well and Diabound came back. `Time is going backwards!!' He thought looking alarmed.

~Modern Day~
`What the seven hells?!!' Atem thought as he was reliving the whole event in reverse. `I knew something was going to happen, but this is crazy!'

~Ancient Egypt~
“What?!” Kalim said. “Diabound was dead! How can he come back to life!? This is madness!”

`He didn't come back to life…' Shada thought. `The sun god's attack never happened!?' The sun dragon retreated back into the sky. `The light is fading! It's retreating into the heavens!'

`The Sun Dragon Ra is leaving!' Atem thought.

That's when the wind grew stronger, pushing Heba off the ground. “Atem!” She called but both of their hands were attacked by an unseen force causing both hands to let go.

“Heba!!” Atem called and felt a little of the strength leave him when he can't see her, he once again felt the attack when Slifer was defeated.

Bakura laughed and said. “I've killed the God of the Heavens! Now, Diabound! Kill the priests' ka- - and slaughter this whole city!” He then thought. `That was close… it's a good thing I learned that spell. Now, before we take care of the priests…' Diabound, as quickly in a blink of an eye, went to the ground and seeked out Heba, who was only half way towards the group when she sensed something below her. “Now we won't be bothered by that bitch!” He said with a laugh.

`Heba!' Atem thought. `Damn you… Bakura…'

Bakura chuckled as he thought. `Now die! Ka of the priests!' He then called. “Magic Blast!!” The attack took Kalim's monster out, which caused him to hold his chest and some blood dripped from the corner of his mouth.

Kalim!” Seth said.

“Seth…” Kalim said. “Don't let your guard down!! He's hiding somewhere… in the night sky!”

Seth looked at the sky and glared. `Where… Where is he hiding? How can we counter his attacks when we don't know where he'll strike from next?!'

`At this rate,' Atem thought. `The priests' ka will all be destroyed...' He then took a deep breath. `My ba… My life… is almost out…' He then looked as thought he had a goal in mind. `I have to follow Bakura… the only way to stop this killing, is to stop him!' He then rode out.

“Pharaoh! Wait!” Shada said, but was completely ignored. `The Pharaoh has no strength left to fight…' He thought as he and his men rode out to follow him. `I can't let him put himself in anymore danger!!'

Bakura lifted the Millennium Ring up while the needles pointed a direction. “So you're coming…” He said with a smirk. “With no fear of death… Good Pharaoh… I won't run or hide… I'll stay right here. I won't budge from the place where you're going to die!” He did wait until the young ruler appeared.

Bakura!!” Atem said, looking tired but was too stubborn to back down.

“I've been waiting for you, Pharaoh…”

“Bakura! Stop hurting innocent people!! They have nothing to do with this!”

The thief chuckled. “When your god was defeated, you ran out of ba, didn't you. Now that you can't summon monsters, you've come to lecture me?” He then turned to look at the side. “Look!! Do you see the palace? Squatting on the throne and throwing around your power, you've never seen it from afar like this, have you?” The view of the palace and the city were beautiful at night. “A ruler is such a pitiful thing… but… to a thief, anything you see is something you can steal. Royal power… the city… human lives… even this view!” He then returned to face the wounded king. “If getting everything you want is all there is to being a king, then as King of Thieves, I am truly the King of Kings! Eh, Pharaoh?!” He laughed.

“You haven't gotten anything…” Atem said. “You're only trampling on the light of life in this city… On people's hopes!!”

“It doesn't matter what you say…” Bakura said. “Because I win.”

~Modern Day~
“What do you mean, don't call the ambulance?!” Grandpa Mouto said. “You're bleeding for heaven's sake!!”

Atem sighed. “In case if you haven't noticed, I've stopped…” He said as he laid back down on the couch with an ice pack on his chest.

“That's no reason why I can't let the doctor take a look at you!”

“Would you believe me that it was part of my past life as the Pharaoh?”

They were silent for a moment before the elder sat across him in a chair. “Explain.”

“Long or short?”

“Short and clear please.”

“After getting the Puzzle, I've seem to be connected to the Pharaoh me in more ways than one. Enough for you?”

“I believe so.” The elder said. “How are you feeling?”

“Like shit… Bird shit to be exact.”

“How come?”

“Because they have to hit the ground in order to give it that `splat' look.” That made the elder laugh. He chuckled until he sprung up from the couch.

“Atem?” The said young man looked distant and collapsed. “Atem!!” The elder went up to the young man. `I'm getting too old for this!' He thought.

~Ancient Egypt~
As soon as Bakura said the last statement, the canyon started to crumble around the young ruler and Diabound reappeared.

Atem was completely alarmed and got off the horse.

“Great Pharaoh!” Shada called as he came up when the young king grabbed hold of the cliff. “Hang on!”

Bakura got off his horse and went to the side where the Pharaoh was holding to the side of the canyon. “I'll take the Millennium Pendant…” He said as he pulled the item off. “And now, Pharaoh… This time… I'll trample your life.” He lifted his foot to step on the young king's hand when he was shoved to the side.

Atem's hand slipped, only to be caught. He looked up and was completely surprised to see Heba above him. “Heba?!” He said as she smiled.

“You can't get rid of me that easily.” She said as Bakura came up and stepped on her back, hard.

“Why is it that I keep seeing you pop up in my time of glory?” He said, deep and ticked. “How many times have I tried to kill you now? Three…?” He put pressure on his foot. “I should have pushed you off the edge back at the Valley of the Kings! Just like you did when we first met.”

`What?' Heba thought as she whimpered.

“Who would have thought that a stupid girl like you, being courageous by saving a corpse, would be so much trouble the second time around, when I was in the palace. And I attacked you instead of the Pharaoh, thinking that would get rid of you!”

Shada and Atem couldn't believe what they were hearing.

“And now you survived my Diabound's second secret attack… This time you will die…” He lifted his foot and harshly kicked her to the side. “Along with your precious Pharaoh! At least you can keep him company in Hell!”

Pharaoh!! Heba!!” Shada shouted as he saw them fall.

As they fell, Atem held her tightly as darkness surrounded them.

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you
For all my life

When I think back on the times
And the dreams we left behind
I'll be glad cos I was blessed to get to have you in my life
When I look back on these days
I'll look and see your face
You were right there for me

In my dreams I'll always see you soar above the sky
In my heart there'll always be a place for you
For all my life I'll keep a part of you with me
And everywhere I am there you'll be

And everywhere I am there you'll be
