Yami's Last Stand
Ryou was cleaning up dinner's dishes alone. Marik had grabbed Malik after coming back from Miranda's and once again requested some parts of dinner to be set aside for when they were done "playing."
Aten and Aria had gone into the backyard to play on the swings and monkeybars. Aten dangled from his arms. He swung his legs up and hung upside down. "Loot at me, sister! I'm a money!"
Aria giggled as she rocked back and forth on the swing. "You're silly, Aten!"
Aten lifted himself up and dangled his legs again. He jumped down. "I feel really bad for Unkie Yugi. Auntie Yami is just being mean."
Aria smoothed her dress around her knees. "Unkie Yugi needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Auntie Yami is mean."
Aten pulled his deck from his pocket. "Auntie Yami would have tilled me if it weren't for you, Aria." Aten smiled at her. "Thant you."
Aria smiled and squealed. She tackled her younger brother to the ground. "Got you, Aten! Tickle attack!"
Aria sat on Aten's stomach tickling him. Aten shrieked and laughed, trying to fight her off. "Aria, that tittles!"
Aria leaned over and buried her face in Aten's neck, growling savagely. Aten reached up through the tickle-induced haze and tickled her stomach. Aria fell on her back and Aten climbed on top of her, sitting on her waist. "My sister lites to be tittled!"
Aria's face turned red as she laughed. "Aten! Stop!"
Aten laughed, seeing his sister plead for him to stop. It had been a long time since they were able to play together like this. Aten's heart problem had always made rough-housing like this very painful for Aten after it was done.
But now, that pain had been forgotten with the help of the pacemaker.
"Aten! Stop!"
"Why?"
"I have to go potty!"
Aten crawled off of her and she ran into the house. Aten sat on the swing and watched his foot trace the grass on the ground.
He saw Bakura coming out of the back door and stagger into the backyard. He looked lost.
"Hello, Daddy Bakura. It's a nize evening, isn't it?"
Bakura looked at Aten and approached him. "Have you seen Marik Ishtar?"
Aten looked around. "My daddy? I don't know where he went. Me and my daddy tame bat from Robbie's house and my daddy grabbed Malik's hand and toot him upstairs. I think they're making love. That's what my mommy says that they do after my daddy sees Robbie's mommy. I think my daddy lites Robbie's mommy." Aten giggled. "Isn't that funny, Daddy Bakura?"
Bakura walked to Aten and Aria's sandbox that Marik had built for the kids for their fourth birthday.
Bakura wandered to the sandbox and began walking around in circles. Aria returned outside and she looked at her father wandering in circles in her sand box.
She walked to Aten. "What is my daddy doing?" Aten watched Bakura tug at his shirt and his right eye twitch. "I don't know. He doesn't loot lite he knows where he's going."
Aria walked up to Bakura. "Daddy? Daddy, what are you doing?"
Bakura continued to walk around in a circle. "I can't find him."
Aten ran to Bakura. "Tant find who, Daddy Bakura?"
Bakura started to sob. "I can't find my way out of this desert. And I can't find him."
Aria cocked her head to the side. "Who? Who are you trying to find?"
Bakura started to cry, looking down at the sand as he circled. "I think Yami killed him…..Marik…"
Aria ran inside and found her mother scrubbing the countertop. "Mommy, Daddy's outside saying he's trying to find Marik."
"Marik's upstairs, baby girl. Don't bother Malik and Malik when they're in their bedroom, sweetheart."
"No, daddy's outside and says he's in the desert."
Ryou dropped the cloth and ran outside to see Bakura crying and walking in circles. "Bakura, baby? Where are you?"
Bakura sobbed. "I can't find Marik. I think Yami killed him. I know he's buried somewhere, but I can't find him."
Ryou put his hand on his yami's shoulder to console him.
"I think Yami's guards got him. He's buried around here somewhere….and I can't find him," the yami started sobbing.
"Aria, stay here with your father, baby girl."
Ryou ran inside the house and up the stairs.
"Malik…sweet gods….right there!"
Ryou shook his head and took a deep breath. He knocked on the door quietly. "Marik?"
"Uh…gods…Ryou, can't this wait?! Right there, baby…OH, YES!"
Ryou knocked. "Marik, I need you!"
"I've been a bad boy!" Malik cried out in pleasure.
Ryou knocked harder. "Bakura is in the back yard, convinced that you're dead! He's wandering around in circles looking for your grave!"
A growl of anger came from Marik. "Ra-damn you, Bakura! Can't even screw my Light without interruptions!"
Ryou growled angrily. His yami was outside, wandering, crying, convinced that Marik was gone.
He had noticed tiny bursts of anger coming from Marik since Bakura became very ill. Malik and Ryou had tried to avoid Marik when his temper rose.
Marik snarled as he left the room and ran down the stairs. Ryou followed him outside.
"Itemri?"
Bakura's eyes rose to see Marik and he let out a wail. He fell to his knees in front of Marik. "Marik! Ishtar! Yami didn't kill you! You're here! You're really here!"
Ryou watched as Marik stroked the gray spiky-haired yami. The next door neighbors had heard the wailing and ran out to their yards to see what had happened.
When they found Marik with Bakura's head buried in his chest, they quickly returned to their homes.
"Bakura, it's okay. Yami didn't hurt me."
Bakura stood up. "Ra be praised, Marik! I was so worried about you! I thought that he had killed you. I couldn't find your grave."
Marik gave Bakura a kiss on the cheek. "Come back inside, Bakura."
Marik walked Bakura past Ryou and shut the back door behind them. Ryou sighed and sat on the bench by the garden.
He buried his face in his hands. "I don't know what to do for him," he whispered.
Aria and Aten ran to their mother. "Mommy? Are you going to cry?"
"I don't lite to see mommy cry," Aten said, tugging on his mother's shirt.
Aria leaned down and whispered in her brother's ear. She climbed up on the chair and sat on her mother's lap. Aten stood beside Ryou.
"Hey, mommy!"
"What is it, sweetheart?"
Aria reached down and tickled Ryou's stomach. Aten tickled behind Ryou's ear, knowing it was a ticklish spot.
"Aten…what..are you doing?" Ryou said, chuckling.
"Mating you feel better, mommy," Aten responded.
Aria tickled harder, making Ryou squirm to evade her touch.
"Aria! That tickles!"
Aten jumped down and tugged at Ryou's shoes. He untied them and pulled off the shoes, tickling the bottom of Ryou's feet.
"OH, SWEET ISIS! ATEN! STOP!"
Ryou fell onto the ground and was soon swarmed by the two chibis tickling him.
Aria sat on Ryou's stomach, tickling her mother's stomach mercilessly. Aten sat on his mother's leg, tickling the bare foot after removing Ryou's sock.
"Aten! Aria!"
The happy squeals of the children echoed through the backyard.
"Say it, mommy! Say we're the best kids you ever had! Say it!"
Ryou's face turned red as he laughed. "You're…the….best….kids!!!"
Aria lifted her mother's shirt, tickling his ribcage, making Ryou arch and twist. "Come on, mommy! Say it!"
"You're the best kids I've ever had!"
Aria pulled back and turned to her brother. "Mommy's had enough."
Aten pulled back and stepped beside his mother. Aria fell forward, laying down on her mother's stomach and chest. She snuggled her cheek into her mother's chest and sighed.
"Comfy mommy," Aria said, wrapping her arms around Ryou.
Aten sat beside Ryou and stroked Ryou's hair. "Do you feel better, mommy?"
Ryou smiled, looking up at Aten…the son the doctors had all said would not have survived past the first hour of life. Upon hearing of Aten's heart failure, he was devastated. Every day he had with Aten was a blessing. Now the pacemaker had appeared to help him. His pains in his chest were not as severe as before the surgery.
Ryou looked down at Aria, the child with boundless energy and stamina. Aria had always been the one getting into mischief.
But Ryou wouldn't trade either of them for anything. If everyone had left him, he would still have his babies.
"Thank you, Aria. Thank you, Aten. I really needed that."
Aria smiled down at him. "Does mommy want to play freeze tag? You can be "It," mommy!"
Ryou grinned. "I have a better idea!" Ryou put his arm around Aria and flipped her on her back. He put his mouth to her neck and growled just like Bakura used to do when they played.
Aria squealed. "OH NO! IT'S THE CUDDLE MONSTER!"
Aten jumped up on Ryou's back. "Not the tuddle monner!"
Ryou growled again and Aria laughed and kicked, her dress flying around as she thrashed.
Aten sat on Ryou's shoulder. Ryou stood up and Aten latched onto his shoulders and wrapped his legs around Ryou. "Giddy up, horsie!"
Ryou chased Aria around the backyard as Aten rode his back. For the time being, cleaning the oven could wait. Drying the dishes could wait.
Ryou needed to play with his children.
*********************
Yami stood outside KaibaCorp as the stars came out. He growled at the towering building, wishing nothing more than to make it crumble.
Yami walked up to the doors of KaibaCorp and tried to open them. He jiggled the handle trying to open the door.
Alex walked towards the door. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to get my Light back. I came for Yugi."
"Master Kaiba told us not to let you---."
Yami stretched out his hand and the glass door shattered, sending shards of glass and Alex flying back.
Alex fell onto his back, unconscious, his body covered in shards of broken glass.
The guard at the desk grabbed the phone and dialed Seto's extension when Yami's Puzzle glowed and the man disappeared into the Shadow Realm.
Yami went into the elevator as Donny came running out of the security office, hearing the breaking of glass. He ran to Alex laying unconscious on the ground, his body pierced with shards of glass. Donny saw Yami enter the elevator and he raced into his office to call Seto and grab his pistol. His treasured weapon was not loaded, so he had to grab a standard issue pistol, much to his dismay.
"Mr. Kaiba!"
[Donny?]
"Yami is here! I just saw him coming up the elevator!"
Yami stepped out of the elevator and saw Jaimen in the hallway, playing with his toy truck. Yami walked up to Jaimen slowly.
Jaimen lifted his head and smiled at Yami. "Hi!"
Yami narrowed his eyes at the boy. "You will come with me."
Jaimen stood up. "Okay! Are we going somewhere?"
Seto jumped out of his study with Yugi. "YAMI! STOP!"
Yami took Jaimen's hand. "He's coming with me."
Yugi screamed to Yami. "Yami! Stop!"
Joey came running out of his studio, purple and blue paint on his shirt. Joey saw Yami holding Jaimen's hand.
"Where are you taking him?"
"I'm taking him to my bedchamber."
Seto and Joey growled. "Jaimen! Don't go with him!"
Yami turned and saw Seto and Joey running towards him. He could not hurt the reincarnation of his High Priest…he needed him for the battle in ten years time. But, Joey……he was expendable.
Yami stretched his hand out and a flash of light came from his hand and fired Joey into the air. Seto stopped and turned around, watching Joey fly into the wall and crash onto a table.
Seto ran to his unconscious lover. Yugi ran to Joey. "JOEY!"
Hayden and Mokuba ran from their separate rooms to see Joey laying on a broken table, unconscious. They ran to their fallen family member.
Jeanie ran out of Mokuba's room, tugging at the bottom of her shirt, pulling it down.
Yugi clenched his fist and turned to his yami. "HOW DARE YOU! Joey is our friend!"
Seto looked over when he heard the elevator door opened. Donny emerged from the elevator and saw Yami with Jaimen's hand.
"STOP, YAMI!" Donny said, pointing his pistol at Yami.
Yami laughed. Jaimen tried to jump back, but Yami held onto his hand tightly.
"Do you think your mortal weapon can stop me?"
Donny saw Yami hold Jaimen. "Let him go!"
Yami raised his hand and a blast came from the gun. Donny fell back, the gun falling down, blood seeping from his chest.
Seto gasped. "Donny!"
Yugi stamped his foot. "Yami! Leave Jaimen alone! Stop this!"
Yami looked down at Yugi. "You will come home with me!"
Yugi looked down at Donny on the floor, his eyes open, gasping for breath. He turned to his unconscious friend on the floor.
Jaimen was pulling at Yami's hand. "Let me go! Daddy!"
Yugi turned to Yami. "Just let Jaimen go. I will go with you."
"Mister Kaiba…." Donny whispered as his hand went to his chest.
Yami released Jaimen, who ran to his father, throwing his arms around Seto.
The elevator door opened and two more of Seto's guards, Joel and Karl ran out of the elevator and saw Donny on his side.
Karl kneeled down to Donny and put his hand on Donny's neck. He flipped open the cell phone and called the ambulance.
Joel reached for his revolver.
"NO! DON'T DO IT!" Seto cried out to his security guard.
Yugi took Yami's hand.
Seto stood up. "Yugi, what are you doing?"
Yugi turned around sadly. "I don't want anyone else to be hurt, Seto."
Yami walked past Joel and Karl. Yugi looked down at Donny.
"I'm sorry, Donny," he said with tears in his eyes.
Yami left with Yugi.
Seto looked up at Mokuba and Jeanie. "Go to Donny! Karl, how is he?"
"He needs a doctor! Alex is also hurt downstairs!"
Seto's heart sank. "Alex is hurt? How is he?"
"The old man's not doing so good, Mr. Kaiba."
Jaimen held onto Joey. "Open your eyes…….dad. Please?"
Joey remained unconscious.
"Jaimen, can you go with Hayden? Hayden, take him to the spare bedroom?"
Hayden nodded quietly. "Sure. Let's go, Jaimen."
"But, dad is hurt! I can't leave him!"
"Jaimen, son, I have to take care of Dad and my staff, okay? I'm responsible for them. Special doctors need to come and help them."
Jaimen threw himself at Seto. "Don't leave me, Daddy! Please, don't leave me!"
"Jaimen, I have to care for my people, okay? Will you feel better if Mokuba or Jeanie comes with you?"
"Mokuba!"
Seto turned to Mokuba and Jeanie. "Mokuba! Come here!"
Mokuba ran to Seto. "Take Jaimen into his room and stay with him while the paramedics arrive."
Jaimen took Mokuba's hand and kept his eye on Joey and Seto as he walked away.
Seto left Joey and went to Donny. "Donny, are you still with me?"
Donny looked up at Seto with his eyes glazed over. "Mister Kaiba…….my family…..Alice…."
"You'll be okay, Donny," Seto said with tears stinging the back of his eyes. "You'll be okay."
The paramedics arrived. Seto watched nervously as they put Donny on a stretcher. Seto ran to Joey. The paramedics told him that he had a bad concussion and his left arm had been broken.
"I'll be at the hospital in twenty minutes. I expect a positive report when I get there," he said sternly.
Seto watched Joey taken to the elevator on a stretcher and he went to the spare bedroom. "Jaimen, I have to see Joey in the hospital. Mokuba and Jeanie will stay here with you."
Hayden ran up to Seto. "Can I go, too, Mr. Kaiba?"
Seto pat him on the head. "No, son, you're better off here. You've already been through enough tonight."
Jaimen broke from Mokuba's grasp. "Please don't leave me! Please, daddy!"
"Jaimen, I will be right back. I have to go."
Jaimen screeched at the top of his lungs. "PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T LEAVE ME ALONE!" Jaimen started clawing at Seto desperately.
"My mommy always left me alone!"
"Jaimen, I will be home again."
Tears flooded Jaimen's face. "If you leave, you might never come home! Please, daddy!"
Seto shook his head. His son had a serious case of separation anxiety. Jaimen had been following him around all day. He had not had a moment to himself. "Son, I know you are upset, but I will be back shortly."
Jaimen held his stomach. "My tummy hurts."
"Jaimen, I have to go."
Jaimen pouted. Seto removed his jacket. "Here's my jacket. Wrap yourself up and go to sleep, okay? It's past your bedtime and it's late. Okay?"
Jaimen's large blue eyes stopped seeping tears. "You'll come back for your jacket?"
Seto nodded. "I sure will. You hold onto my jacket and I'll be home as quickly as I can."
"Promise?"
Seto struggled to grin, knowing that two of his best men could be dying. "Promise."
Jaimen puckered up his lips and kissed Seto's cheek. "Don't be long."
"I won't."
Seto left and Jaimen ran back to Mokuba. He wrapped himself in Seto's jacket and curled up in a fetal position, sucking his thumb, and rocking himself.
Seto grabbed the phone book and ordered Joel and Karl to go with him to the hospital. Karl drove the limo as Seto called Donny's wife to tell her what had happened.
******************************
Seto waited in the hospital waiting room, pacing nervously. His lover and two of his best men were in critical condition. Dr. Zira came out of the doors and pulled Seto aside.
"How's Joey?"
Zira sighed. "Joey's left arm is broken in two places. It looks like Joey has a mild case of whiplash. What happened?"
"Someone attacked Joey. And I can guarantee you, Zira, he's going to pay dearly!"
"He's going to stay here overnight. Now, about Donny and Alex."
Seto crossed his arms and bit his lip nervously. "How are they?"
"Donny is in critical condition. I have him on a respirator and morphine drip."
"What are his chances?"
Zira looked away at Seto. "Lucky for Donny, he was wearing his bullet-proof vest, but it didn't seem to help him."
"Donny always comes to work with his vest. Why didn't the vest stop him for being hit?"
Zira nodded. "But, the bullet impacted him at an extremely close range. Part of the bullet was found embedded in his chest. What kind of gun does Donny carry?"
"A Colt Diamondback."
"Well, the wound looks like it was from a more powerful weapon. The bullet looks like it was forced through the bullet-proof vest. Whoever wanted Donny dead forced the bullet into the chest and past the protection of the vest. The vest should have prevented him being hit."
Seto covered his eyes to shield his tears. Yami had made Donny's gun fire in reverse with more of an impact than possible. All that mattered…is that Donny was injured
"What about Alex?"
"Alex lost a lot of blood, but we're still removing shards of glass from his eyelids."
Seto cursed under his breath as Donny's wife ran into the waiting room.
"Seto! What happened?! Is my husband okay?"
Seto looked down at the woman, late into a pregnancy which Seto had heard little about. "Alice, I'm so sorry!"
Zira turned to the woman. "Your husband is in critical condition. I'm deeply sorry."
"Oh, no! Not my Donny!"
"Can we see him?" Seto asked.
"We're giving him a blood transplant now. He lost a lot of blood."
The woman sobbed on Seto's shoulder. Seto had known Donny's wife from the orphanage where he and Mokuba had grown up. Whether he wanted to admit it or not, she was his friend.
"Don't let him die, Zira."
"I haven't lost any of your guys yet, Seto."
Seto narrowed his eyes. "Donny better not be your first!"
Zira cleared his throat. Now was a good time to leave. "I have to get back to my patient." Zira left.
Seto brought Alice over to a chair. "Who's home with your kids?"
Alice choked as she cried. "My mother's taking care of the kids. Seto, who did this to my husband?"
Seto turned away and growled. "Someone who is going to pay dearly for hurting him!"
***********************************
Seto returned home mid-morning, his eyes bloodshot and red from lack of sleep. Joey was able to come home. He had his arm in a sling and a pounding headache.
Seto staggered into the elevator followed by Joey and Mokuba. "Where's Jaimen?" he asked with a yawn.
"He's sleeping. I was up with him since four in the morning having nightmares. He was having nightmares about you not coming home."
Seto leaned against the elevator wall. "That kid has a serious case of separation anxiety. I know he's going to be following me around like a lost puppy again today."
"Well, you can't blame the kid, Seto. His mother left him alone all the time."
"I don't blame him, but I don't want to encourage it either."
Seto let out a sigh. "The only thing I want right now is a hot shower and my bed."
Joey followed Seto to his room, where the CEO removed his shirt and sat on the bed to remove his shoes.
The phone rang and Joey picked it up. "Joey Wheeler-Kaiba speaking."
Yugi's cry came over the phone. [Joey?]
"Yugi? What's wrong?"
Seto and Joey shared uncomfortable glances, knowing why Yugi left. Seto reached out for the phone.
"Yugi, did Yami hurt you?"
[He…He didn't get the chance……]
"What are you talking about?"
[We got home…*sniff*….and Yami took my shirt off….*sob*….and then….he just collapsed.]
"Collapsed? How so?"
[He fell down, clutching his chest…..Seto……]
"Yugi, take a deep breath and calm down."
[Seto, Yami is dying.]
