Death of A Yami

Seto, exhausted as he was, put his shirt back on. Jaimen had refused to let his father leave without him. When Seto told Jaimen where he was going, the child was torn between staying with his father and seeing the man who tried to drag him away from his father.

The child decided to go, despite Seto and Joey's warnings of what he may see.

Seto called Ryou from the limousine as it pulled away. "Ryou?"

[Oh, hello, Seto.] the British boy's voice said timidly over the phone.

"What's wrong, angel?"

[It was a long night with Bakura. He was having nightmares. Then Aten had nightmares. I was awake between a crying nine year old who was afraid of his grandfather and a crying yami who was afraid to die. It was a very long night.]

"Did you hear about Yugi?"

[Yes. Yugi called me up about ten minutes ago. I'm getting dressed now.]

"Are you going over?"

[I'm going over for Yugi. Yugi needs my support and that is the ONLY reason why I am going.]

Seto raised an eyebrow at the sound of the cold, bitter voice coming from his friend. "I'm going over for Yugi, too. Yami burst into KaibaCorp last night and injured Alex and Donny."

[Oh no! Are they okay?]

"Alex had a blood transfusion last night. Donny….."

[Don't tell me he's dead, Seto! The kids will be heartbroken.]

"No, Donny isn't dead. I told the hospital to alert me when he wakes up. He had to have major surgery last night. The hospital said he's lost a lot of blood, too, and they're still not sure if he'll make it. Joey has a broken arm and a concussion, but the hospital released him when I came home."

[Keep us updated, Seto. Aten loves Donny.]

"I will. Joey, Jaimen, and I are on our way to Yugi's. Meet you there."

*************************

Yugi waited downstairs with Ryou as Seto's limousine pulled in front of the Game Shop.

When Seto and Joey walked into the room, they saw how gray and wrinkled Yugi looked. Yugi looked thin and his skin had taken a gray color.

Yugi threw himself at Joey. "Joey, he's dying! My yami is dying!"

Joey hugged his friend tightly with one arm, not wanting to say anything that would hurt Yugi's feelings regarding Yami. He knew, they all knew, that Yugi still loved Yami, even if his behavior was inexcusable.

"I'm sorry, Yugi. I wish I knew what to tell you, buddy."

Yugi looked up at Seto. "Did Alex and Donny make it to the hospital?"

Seto nodded. "Donny is still unconscious. They don't know when he will wake up. Alex needed a transfusion."

Yugi lowered his head. "I'm so sorry, Seto."

Seto put a hand on Yugi's shoulder. "It's okay."

"It means a lot to me that you guys came. I know Yami has hurt all of you."

Ryou leaned down to look at Yugi. "Yugi, we are here for you. That is more important to us."

Yugi sniffled. "You guys are the best friends anyone can have. Joey, he broke your arm….Seto, he hurt your people…Ryou, he tried to kill you and your children. Jaimen, I'm sorry he tried to hurt you."

Jaimen gripped onto Seto's hand. "I'm okay."

Ryou smiled at him. "Nothing matters to us more, knowing that you have someone here with you."

Yugi smiled as the tears ran down his face. "Thank you. I know Yami has done some terrible, inexcusable things. But…Yami is the other half of my soul. Without him, I'll be incomplete again."

Ryou shook his head. "You don't have to explain to us, Yugi. Let's go see him."

************************

Yugi lead the group to Yami's bedroom. The room was dark. A black pillar candle, decorated with gold writing was burning beside Yami's bed. Seto recognized the writing on the candle as ancient Egyptian prayers.

Yami laid on his back, wheezing and his fingers twitched as his body was shutting itself down, preparing for death.

"Yami?"

Yami opened his eyes. He looked at Seto. "My High Priest has come. How fitting."

Seto narrowed his eyes. "You damned near killed two of my best men."

Yami grinned. "So I did. Don't worry, my High Priest Seth. They will be waiting for me in the Underworld. I will attain eternal rest at last."

Yugi took Yami's hand. "Yami? Do you mean to say that this is eternal? I'll never have you in my life again?"

Yami looked up at Ryou, knowing Bakura and Marik were suffering the same fate. He smiled. "It is rest eternal. You will never see your husband after he dies, Ryou."

Ryou gripped Seto's hand reassuringly. "My yami can't die."

"He will. Your seed is also part yami. Your seed will perish."

Ryou squeezed Seto's hand. "My children can't die," he choked.

"Marik will die, too. Then, Ryou Bakura…..you will be alone."

Ryou narrowed his eyes. "I will not be alone! My children will not die and neither will be my husband! I won't let any of them die! Please, Yami, you have to know a way of curing this disease! You are the pharaoh!"

Yami chuckled, making himself cough. "Now, what would make you think I know about that? If I had the cure, do you think I would be dying of it?"

Ryou turned to Yugi. "He's been stealing your lifeforce to stay young, Yugi. That is why it doesn't look like he is aging." Ryou looked at Yami furiously. "You knew about stealing the hikari's lifeforce to keep your appearance young! You knew about that before any of us found out about it. That is why I think you know about the cure!"

"What?!" Yugi said, turning angrily to his yami. "How could you do this to me? I'm more gray than my Grandpa was!" Tears filled Yugi's eyes at the thought of his murdered grandfather.

Yami chuckled. "Ryou Bakura, I didn't think you had it in you. Yes, I do know the cure."

A collective gasp sounded.

"Spill!" Seto growled.

"What is it?" Yugi asked.

"Please tell me," Ryou begged.

"You've been keeping it secret and you knew all along?" Joey asked angrily.

Yami nodded. "Yes, I know how to cure the Yami Virus." Yami started chanting in Egyptian.

When he finished, he opened his eyes. "If you go home, you will see Bakura and Marik have changed."

Yugi smiled. "Oh, thank you, Yami!"

Ryou raised an eyebrow. "How can a chant cure the Virus?"

"The pharaoh is the embodiment of Ra on the Earth. As the pharaoh, I had power over life and death, health and sickness of my subjects…including the commoners. So, it is my chant which can cure the Yami Virus. It is my chant that have changed Bakura and Marik."

Joey raised an eyebrow, not knowing whether to believe the yami.

To him, Yugi seemed quick to believe Yami's sudden change.

Yami closed his eyes. "Don't mention it, Yugi. I'm just glad to try to make things right…before I die."

Yugi kissed Yami on the forehead. "Yami, how could you do this to me? I thought you loved me."

"I do."

"Then why would you drain my energy to make me look old?"

Yami's body twitched. "I'm sorry that I had been taking your lifeforce without your permission. I can't take back what I've done. Only know that I am sorry."

Yugi's anger fell as he saw his Yami slowly gasping for breath.

"Farewell..my…little…Yugi."

Yami closed his eyes and his head fell limp against the pillow.

"YAMI!!! NO!"

Yugi grabbed his chest and fell over against Yami's shoulder. "Yami, you can't die on me! You can't!"

Yugi sobbed as he felt Yami's body move. He stepped back and watched as Yami's body quickly rotted until he appeared like an unwrapped mummy.

Jaimen ran behind Seto, never having seen a mummy before.

Ryou took a crying Yugi into his arms. "It's okay, Yugi."

Yugi sobbed. "My yami is dead! What am I going to do, Ryou? I loved him! I feel so….incomplete."

Seto rubbed Yugi's back. "I know you loved him, Yugi."

Joey ran his fingers through the duelist's tri-colored hair.

"I lost my Grandpa! Now I lost my Yami! I'm all alone!"

Ryou and Joey held Yugi as he sobbed. "Do you want someone to stay with you tonight or do you want to stay at someone else's house?"

Yugi looked at the black candle. "I can't leave. That black candle has to remain lit or my yami will not reach the underworld. I don't want the place burning down if I leave it unattended."

Seto looked down. "Do you want one of us to stay with you?"

Yugi looked teary-eyed at Joey. His large chibi eyes were full of tears and pleading. "Joey? I know you are hurt, but can you stay with me tonight? I really don't want to be alone."

Jaimen ran to Joey. "Dad, are you really going to stay?"

"Yugi needs me to stay to help him feel better, Jaimen."

Jaimen's eyes filled with tears. "Promise me you will come home? I don't want you to be gone forever and ever and ever and ever!"

Joey ruffled the child's hair and kissed him on the cheek. "I won't be gone forever, Jaimen. Just today. Yugi needs me."

Jaimen sniffled. "Okay. You can stay. As long as you come home tomorrow and promise me that you will."

"I promise, kiddo."

****************************

Yami stood before Anubis, the jackal-headed god. Osiris looked at Yami as the pharaoh bowed to him.

"Greetings, my pharaoh. You have returned to the Underworld."

"I have."

Osiris opened a portal behind him. "You do not need to have your heart weighed against the Feather of Ma'at. You are a pharaoh."

"Thank you for such a welcome greeting, my god."

"You will live in paradise in the Underworld. You may spend eternity with your greatest desire. What is it that you desire most, my pharaoh?"

Yami grinned. There is only one thing he desired more than anything…..

A certain spiky white-haired yami below him….

Bound……helpless…..vulnerable.

****************************

Aten ran out of the house and over to Robbie's house. He washed his face free of peanut butter and his hands. His white and blond hair flew behind him as he ran excitedly over to Robbie's.

Robbie limped into the door sadly. "Oh…hello, Aten. My mommy and I just took my daddy to his ship. He's leaving today."

Aten cocked his head to the side. "Awww….sorry, Robbie. Your daddy will be home soon, right? Is he coming home for your brother to be bornded?"

Robbie shrugged as he shut the front door. He sat on the couch and crossed his legs on the couch. "No. My daddy said he won't be coming home for a long time again."

Aten reached up and stroked Robbie's short black hair. The ends of his hair was curling, much to Aten's amusement. "It's otay, Robbie. I know you'll miss him, but, I'll be here to teep you comp…comp….company. That's a hard word to say."

Robbie sighed. "Yeah, but when my daddy goes away, I miss him an awful lot." Robbie's face soon beamed with light as he turned toward his friend. "But, I have you! So, it's all good!"

Aten smiled at him and tackled Robbie on the couch. Aten tickled Robbie under his arms, making the child squeal.

Miranda poked her head out of the kitchen. "Aten, Robbie, can you both keep it down? I have a little bit of a headache."

A knock sounded on the door. Miranda called out to Robbie to get the door as she struggled to stand up.

Robbie opened the door to find a lean woman standing there with a tight, revealing dress and a hat on her head. "Oh…it's you. Where is your mother?"

Aten ran beside Robbie. "Who is this?"

Miranda came to the door. "VERA! What….What…What are you doing here?"

"Oh, hello, Miranda-darling! So nice to see you, my little sister!" The woman gasped. "So, it is true! You're expecting another bundle of joy, how wonderful!"

Miranda narrowed her eyes. "I have nothing to say to you, Vera. Get back into your…..limousine….and go back home!"
Vera threw down her cigarette and crushed it under her foot. "Mira-darling, I'm here to help you! You don't expect me to let my little sister handle a pregnancy and---." Vera looked down at Robbie with his clubbed foot. "A child who must need constant attention because of his…condition."

Miranda narrowed her eyes. "Robbie, Aten, get in the house."

"Mira-darling, I want to help you! Isn't Daniel around to help you? I heard he was shipped out this morning!"

Miranda narrowed her eyes. "Who told you about Daniel being here?"

"Mum-sy knows all, Mira-dear. You know that."

Miranda rolled her eyes. "Come on in, Vera. But, you can't smoke in here because of Aten's heart condition."

Vera looked down at the Egyptian boy. Another child of Miranda's had a problem? She walked inside as Miranda shut the door.

"Mommy, who is this?"

"This is your Aunt Vera, Robbie."

"Oh…hello! I'm Robbie!"

Vera looked down at the child with an icy stare that made Aten cower back. "Charmed……"

Miranda took Vera's arm. "Let's go talk in the kitchen. You boys go upstairs and play."

Robbie smiled and hugged his mother. "Okay! Come on, Aten! We can play 'War' again!"

"Otay! I'm tumming!"

Vera watched Robbie limp up the steps, his face contorting with every step.

Vera sat at the kitchen table and crossed her legs. "It's been so long since we've seen each other, my dear little sister!"

"Don't 'dear little sister' me, Vera! Why are you really here?"

"I told you, I'm here to help you around the house. I want to make sure this pregnancy doesn't end like all of your other pregnancies have ended. I would hate for you to have to handle two crippled children by yourself while Danny-Boy is traveling the world in the lap of luxury."

Miranda gripped the edge of the counter in fury.

"Daniel was injured when his ship was bombed, Vera," she said, her voice filled with venom. "Daniel was hurt and he was home recuperating. He wasn't on a vacation. He was injured!"

Vera looked her pregnant sister from head to pregnant belly. "I can see he wasn't hurt too badly. He obviously enjoyed his 'vacation,' as you call it."

She pulled out a cigarette. Miranda grabbed it from between her lips. "We do not smoke in this house."

"Darling, it's just one cigarette!"

"Aten's heart is bad and we do not smoke because he's around so much. Besides, I don't want my little boy's lungs or my baby exposed to that junk."

Vera rolled her eyes. "What's the point of trying to save your kid, Mira-darling?"

"Get out of my house before I call Marik Ishtar over here."

Vera's eyes lit up. "An affair?! Now that's my little sister!"

Miranda snickered, remembering the scene from the other night when she had brought Bakura home. "Nonsense, Vera! We're good friends."

"Where's your sense of adventure, Mira-darling? Your husband is never home and you have a cripp---."

Miranda raised a warning finger. "Say that word again and I will bodily throw your ass out of here for saying that about my son! Now, I told you to leave!"

Vera stood up. "Oh, come now, I love my nephew."

Miranda narrowed her eyes. "You told me to get an abortion when you found out about Robbie's clubbed foot! Then, you told mom! Then she ordered me to get an abortion! Then you both would say you would pay for it!" Miranda wiped the tears from her eyes.

"Yeah, you love Robbie alright! Where were you when he was born? You were in the Bahamas sunning yourself on the sand sipping Pina Coladas and probably humping every man in sight! Do you know where I was, Vera? I had no husband and a sick baby whom I was told was never going to walk. That's where I was. I was alone….here. Neither you nor mom wanted anything to do with me because I kept the baby! Guess what, Vera? I still have him! He's upstairs and he's playing with his best friend who means the world to him! He means the world to me, Vera. Robbie is my world. If you and mom can't understand that, then I don't need either of you in my life! There's the door…please let it hit you on the way out!"

Miranda turned around, feeling the strange pains in her belly again.

Vera stood up and went to her sister. She reached out a hand to touch the belly and Miranda stepped back, panic in her eyes.

"Don't touch me, Vera. I don't ever want you to touch me!"

Vera brushed her fingers through her dangling black hair. "I can see you need help, sister. I would like to see my baby sister go through at least one successful pregnancy."

Miranda ripped her hand away from Vera when Vera tried to grab her arm. "It's not my fault that Vinnie kicked me down the stairs! The baby didn't have a chance!"

"What about Christa?"

Miranda growled and slapped Vera across the face. "Leave Christa out of this! It's not my fault she had a heart defect!"

Vera rubbed her cheek. "Mira-darling, I know you are exhausted! Why don't you go lay down?"

A loud squeal came from the room upstairs and a bang. Miranda rubbed her temples.

"They are loud today…I have a headache."

Vera picked up her purse. "I'll tell them to keep it down a little bit. You lay down on the couch and rest, Miranda-darling."

Miranda sat at the kitchen table as Vera walked upstairs. "Why did Vera have to show up? Why me?"

Vera walked upstairs and threw open the door to Robbie's bedroom.

Robbie was on his hands and knees. Aten was riding Robbie's back.

Robbie looked up as Vera shut the door. "Hello."

Vera turned her attention to Aten. "Who is this?" she asked with disdain.

Aten stood up and reached out his hand. "I'm Aten Bakari Ishtar Ibn Marik."

"Are you Marik Ishtar's son? Is Miranda your mommy?"

Aten giggled. "No, my mommy's name is Ryou Bakura."

"Oh." Vera crossed her arms. "What are you doing here?"

"Playing with Robbie."

Robbie stood up, rubbing his hip. "Aten, it's good you still don't weigh much. Next time, don't kick my hips so hard when you're trying to get me going."

Vera gasped. "What were you two doing up here?!"

"Riding Robbie," Aten said casually. "He mates a good horsie."

Vera's face turned pale. "That's disgusting, Robert Allen Morgan!"

Robbie shook his head. "No, Aten said I 'make' a good horsie!"

"He most certainly did not! Your mother is laying downstairs in terrible pain and you both are up here doing devilish acts! Aten, get out of here!"

Robbie grabbed Aten and pulled the Egyptian boy to his chest. "But…but…It's not time for him to go yet."

"It is! You boys should be ashamed of yourselves! Playing like a couple of sissy boys!"

Aten shuddered at the venom in her voice. Robbie caressed Aten's hair to calm his friend.

"Aten, you go home and think about what you were doing and I suggest you pray to God that he forgives you!"

"But, he's not Christian."

"I pray to Ra and Anubis. I pray lite my daddies."

Vera gasped. "A HEATHEN! Blasphemer!"

Robbie stood in front of Aten. "That's not true! My mommy said that Aten and I pray to the same god but He has different names! I've seen Aten and his daddies pray. It's really cool!"

"Aten, get out of here!"

Aten looked up at Robbie with his brown and purple eyes large and teary. "Robbie, do I have to go?"

Robbie looked up at the angry woman. "Aten is my friend. I don't want him to leave."

"The fact that he is welcomed under this roof is sacrilige!"

Robbie wrapped his arms around Aten defiantly. "Aten is not leaving!"

"Somebody is going to have to read a certain passage in the Good Book that says 'Obey your elders.'"

Robbie clutched his fingers into Aten and buried his face in Aten's hair. "Aten can't leave me! We're still playing!"

"Your mother hasn't taught you anything about being obedient, has she? Go figures! Nobody likes a disobedient child, Robbie….especially when he's a cripple!"

Aten felt Robbie's breathing quicken. Aten hugged Robbie. "That's not a very nize thing to say about Robbie! That's really, really mean!"

Vera opened the door. "Aten, get out now."

Aten took Robbie's hand. "Tum outside, Robbie. We'll go play in the bat-yard."

Vera's eyes widened at the two boys holding hands.

'I have got to put a stop to that,' she thought.
