Chapter 5: Voices

_______________

Dominon City, Japan

11:52am

Jounouchi Katsuya sighed as he made his way down the crowded streets of Domino City, his next destination being the grocery store. For him, hearing about the former spirit of Motou Yuugi's millennium puzzle getting married to his best friend Mazaki Anzu was interesting enough, not to mention something in which called for a joyous celebration. As he was walking, he was thinking about the much needed essentials for the apartment.

Let's see.we need some milk, yeah, milk. Tha' milk back at da apartment spoiled, bah, left a really bad taste in ma mouth. Numba one rule, smell tha milk before attemptin' ta drink it. What else? We need bread. Mai used tha last pieces an' I was gonna do some French toast with them! Neva mind. Guess I'll get tha' Captain Crunch cereal.come ta think of it, I grew addicted to tha' cereal. What else? Damn, shoulda listened to Mai an' Shizuka! I shoulda made a list! I thought I woulda remembered everythin'! Man, if I forget anythin', Mai is gonna send me back out ta get it! I know she would do tha'! I hate when she does tha'!

Jounouchi sighed again. He did think that was all he was getting at the store, but then again, maybe he do a whole round of grocery shopping, that way Mi wouldn't make him go back outside for anything when she got home. Jounouchi smirked then. That did sounded good. He could just do the shopping and go back to the apartment, put the stuff away and head down to Mai's beauty saloon. Ever since Mai and Jounouchi had been married, Mai decided to open a beauty saloon, since she had many degrees in hair dressing, having went to a beauty school at some point in her life. Things had turned out to be successful-she was able to pay enough money to conduct business in an open space area that used to be a clothing store. She was also able to hire employees and Diana Yuzuki worked along with her as well. Diana was dating Honda Hiroto for some time so it was rather safe to say that they were boyfriend/girlfriend for now. Honda still had some unresolved feelings for Shizuka, however those feelings weren't as strong as before, especially when Shizuka had informed him she only wanted to be friends. Shizuka wasn't sure if she was ready for a relationship and would prefer focusing on her Business Management major in college for the time being.

Jounouchi mainly went over to the beauty saloon whenever he was feeling bored and when he was off from work, only to see what she was up to. Women would swoon over him because of his handsome features, but would quickly back off, knowing that he was Mai's husband. Mai would tease him, saying that he was trying to show off his handsomeness and was proud of making the women jealous. Jounouchi hotly denied the teasing allegations. Mai and Jounouchi had been married for months now and over that space of time, Mai had moved in with him and Shizuka.

As Jounouchi was walking, he began thinking about his sister then. He hoped and anticipated very much that she had gotten the job she applied for and went in for the interview today. However there was one thing that circulated in his mind, the minute Yugi had asked him.

How come she didn't tell him where this job was applying for was located? It sounded a bit strange, but then again, it wasn't as though he didn't trust his younger sister.

Why didn' Shizuka tell me about where she even had this interview at? I shoulda asked her.but I forgot. I heard tha' moneybag's corporation had internships but I don' care. I don' want ma sista bein' a slave to tha' creep. So far I think she's been listenin' to me about staying away from tha' building. I still don' understand why Kaiba still acts the way he did before, like a fuckin' jerk. I mean, me an' the others risked everythin' to help him an' Mokuba. Speakin' of Mokuba, tha' little guy sure got tall an' everthin'. He's grown up a lot, an' he's a Psychology major. Heard Psychology was hard as hell, eh, he's smart enough to handle it. I invited him ta tha' dinna today but he declined. Kaiba musta told him ta stay away from us. I shoulda known jerks don' change, no matta wha' ya done for them.

Perhaps it may have been wrong for Jounouchi to think that way and he knew that Yami would tell him otherwise but he just didn't understand Kaiba or his cold personality that seemed to have grown colder. It kind of scared him and he wanted to protect his sister at all costs. It was only a slight improvement over the margin of ten years.

Jounouchi grimaced then.

His sister didn't know the situation between him and Kaiba, at least not that much and he didn't intend to fill her in on anything either. He had his reasons for this and those reasons alone said it all. He didn't want his sister anywhere near Kaiba or where he even worked. He also didn't want her 'accidentally' finding herself applying for an internship at Kaiba Corporations either.

He wanted her to stay away.

As he was walking, Jounouchi suddenly bumped into someone that looked like Shizuka in the crowded streets of Domino City. Shizuka stumbled backwards a bit as she looked up, realizing whom exactly she had run into.

"Jou.what are you doing out here?" Shizuka asked, rubbing her shoulder then, however her voice hinted some uneasiness.

Jounouchi raised an eyebrow, surprised that he had run into the same young woman he was thinking about.

"I didn' expect ta run inta ya sis," he replied, rubbing his own shoulder as well. "Where are ya coming from, tha' interview? How did it go?"

Shizuka was about to respond to the question directed from her brother, however the interview back at Kaiba Corporations suddenly sent a shiver down her spine. Jounouchi sensed her uneasiness.

"Is something wrong sis?" he asked, touching her shoulder then, wondering whether this was a good thing or a bad thing Shizuka was acting this way, whether it was a good thing, being that she got to the job, or a bad thing, being by she hadn't gotten the job.

"Nothing," she finally replied quietly, shaking away the shivers. "The interview went.fine."

"It did? I was just wonderin' sis an' I forgot ta ask you, but where did ya have your interview? You neva told me where it was located or anythin' so I was a bit curious-"

"It's a law firm Jou," Shizuka interrupted almost sharply but quickly recoiled from her tone of voice then. "Jou, I'm sorry about that it's just that I'm tired and everything and you woke me up with that rock music.yeah I'm just tired."

"I did say I was sorry abou' that," Jounouchi replied, flashing one of his famous goofy smiles. "A law firm eh? Which law firm is tha'? Did ya get tha job though?"

"Yeah, I got the job," Shizuka replied, however she felt uncomfortable speaking to Jounouchi about the job, knowing that her words were a lie.

Should I be lying to him about this? Why am I doing this to him? I've never lied to Jounouchi before.I just can't bring myself to tell him the truth. "I'll tell you about it later Jou.right now I have to get to the apartment and get my books."

"Are ya sure you alright sis?" Jounouchi asked the young woman cautiously, wondering why she was acting so.unsure of herself, as though she was somewhat hiding something from him. Before she could answer his question, suddenly Shizuka heard a cold, deep voice going through her mind.

Your mutt brother doesn't know you're here applying for this job, now does he? [1]

The voice strangely belonged to Kaiba and Shizuka wasn't sure whether she had imagined the voice or not, all she knew was that it sent a shiver down her spine. It was a distortion of words Kaiba had said to her during the interview.

She wasn't exactly sure where the voice came from at all.

"Yes.yes Jou, I'm fine, I'm just tired, why wouldn't I be fine?" Shizuka inquired.

Jounouchi ran a hand through his hair then.

"I don' know, you jus' looked as though you zonked out there or somethin'," he replied but then his eyes lit up, realizing his sister had told him she had gotten the job. He then hugged her, Shizuka reluctant to hug him back. Then he pulled back from her and flashed yet another smile. "Anyways, congratulations an' everythin'. I'll see ya lata then, didn' ya remember tha' you an' Mai wanted me ta go ta tha' supermarket for some things eh? An' afta I go shoppin', I'm goin' at Mai's shop an' see what she's doin'."

Shizuka sighed and shook her head.

"Jou, don't tell me you're going there just to flash yourself again," she said, causing Jounouchi to grimace and raise an eyebrow, however it was only a pretended gesture. "The women at the saloon know already that you're taken and you're handsome already."

"Hey, I jus' wanna see ma wife, now wha's wrong wi' tha'?" Jounouchi protested then. "I ain't paradin' for them! Its no' ma fault they can' stop lookin' at me! I jus' eh.want ta see how things are goin', know what I mean?"

Shizuka sighed again.

"Sure Jou' you just want to see how things are going," she repeated and then flashed Jounouchi a small smile to assure she was alright even though the chilling voice and the interview still circulated in her mind. "I'll see you later, okay?"

Jounouchi nodded as Shizuka prepared to leave, him doing to same as well.

"Guess we'll talk lata an' ya tellin' me where tha' law firm is okay? I wanna know, know wha' I mean? Glad ya got the job though."

Shizuka nodded as well.

"I'm glad too," she replied quietly.

Brother and sister eventually went their separate ways, immediately getting lost in the crowd then. As Shizuka was walking, suddenly the voice came back with the same words, the same coldness and precision as though it was an echo, intending to haunt her because of her lie to her brother.

Your mutt brother doesn't know that you're here applying for this job, now does he?

Shizuka suddenly whirled around, thinking that someone was somehow following her, playing some kind of trick on her. Pedestrians passed by her, annoyed that they had been suddenly forced to walk around her because of her suddenly stop. No one was following her or was behind her for that matter-there was no indication of where the voice came from.

It was in my mind, it was all in my mind. I don't know where that voice came from but it was just in my mind. I better get to the apartment now.

Turning around then, Shizuka made her way down the street to the apartment, certain that she had made the right decision in not telling her brother the truth. Perhaps it was better this way.

Otaku Beauty Saloon

Domino City, Japan

12:00pm

"Alright, see ya later Kia!" twenty-nine year old Jounouchi Mai called out as the last customer of her beauty saloon left, after getting her hair and nails done-her being the last customer for the time being, providing Mai time to grab some lunch and get ready for another round of customers.

The woman turned back around and waved, eventually leaving the saloon then.

Jounouchi Mai smiled and also waved.

Whew! Finally, lunchtime! But then again, another day, another success. This business is doing better than I expected. Humph and they thought this wasn't going to be famous.

Mai was kidding around, of course thinking about the gang. If it wasn't for them, and especially her husband Jounouchi Katsuya, she would still have been trapped in the creepy Shadow Realm.

Thinking about that gave Mai terrible memories and this was something she didn't want to be reminded of again.

Mai had grown up very much to become an even more attractive woman with her long, curly golden blond hair, some of it coming around her face and her face being more mature than ever. Her blue eyes showed satisfaction over her successful business. She was wearing a short sleeve navy blue shirt and black boot cut jeans with matching high heel boots. A white and light blue apron was on top of the clothes as she cleared up the materials she was using for her last client before lunch.

The beauty saloon was medium with white marble floors and blue walls as well. There were seats in the saloon-seats for the customers, the hair driers and for individuals waiting to get her hair done. The seats were painted a light blue as well, the driers white. Light blue and white happened to be two of Mai's favorite colors so of course she would use the two colors for the saloon.

The employees she had hired were busy with other customers, hopefully able to finish the job, as she continued cleaning up.

"I wonder if that darling husband of yours is going to make a debut over here again?" a voice asked, belonging to Diana Yuzuki as she came from the back of the saloon. She was a very attractive woman , 5'7 in height with long, auburn brown hair, done in a simple bun, bright light gray eyes and had more of a Chinese appearance with sharp eyebrows and sharpened features. She was Japanese/Chinese, her mother Japanese, her father Chinese. She was the one that helped Mai get started officially with the business and worked in partner with the woman. She was Honda's girlfriend and the gang liked her very much, especially Shizuka, the three women never hesitating to go on shopping sprees together.

Mai smirked at Diana's comment then.

"Knowing Jou, he probably will be here," she replied as she continued cleaning. "He's off from work and he does have classes later on. He's supposed to be doing some grocery shopping today, at least this morning."

"We're still having this dinner, right?"

"Yeah, Yuugi made the reservations you know."

"I know, I just remembered," Diana said as she then picked up a newspaper from the light blue marble counter that reached all the way down to what seemed to be eight to nine seats. She then sat down, browsing through the paper the minute she opened it from its folded position. "I still can't figure out what to wear yet."

Mai raised an eyebrow in question.

"Didn't you say that you were wearing that dark navy blue dress with the silver shoes, silver gloves and the silver purse?" she asked.

Diana shrugged.

"I know but that outfit-the golden one, I showed you, I think that would look better on me."

"Well, I hope you stick with that outfit. You know the guys, impatient, impatient. They'll throw a whole big fit if we don't be ready by the time they're ready."

"Especially Honda," Diana said with a sigh as Mai finished cleaned up around her area.

"Are you trying to look bootylicious for Honda eh?"

Diana blushed a deep red and threw the newspaper at Mai, Mai laughing.

"Hey, that is not for you to know!" she countered.

"Really?" Mai teased, grabbing the newspaper in time before it fell to the floor.

"Really Mai. Now are we getting lunch or what?"

"Yeah, but how's things between you and him?"

"Its going great. Honda is really sweet."

"Sure?" Mai asked, knowing about Honda's small unresolved feelings for Shizuka.

"Of course Mai! Honda is sweet and nice. I think this relationship is really going to work out."

I hope it does for you Diana. Honda's a really nice guy, but with this feelings he still has for Shizuka, I really have no clue about him now. But then again he said he loved Diana and I believe him.

"It will," Mai replied.

Then she looked up at the clock then.

"We better head out for lunch. Me thinks some more people will be coming in and soon."

Diana nodded.

"Yeah," she agreed, getting up from her seat and so did Mai as well. "So where do you want to go for lunch?"

Mai sighed.

She would have to figure that out right now.
