To Love the Enemy

Chapter 12: Tension

Kaiba Corporations

5:20 pm

Ootogi Ryuji back in DominoCity. Amusing…I must say. Simply amusing. He should watch his back carefully now that he's back in DominoCity. His dice monsters still are not compatible to what I have in store for the future of Kaiba Corporations.

Kaiba Seto smirked coldly, the smirk visible and reflecting through the window of the office, the icy dark blue orbs calculating and smooth, not to mention observant. Ootogi had come in the office a few minutes ago, after some would call a misunderstanding with security downstairs in the min lobby. Even security regarded Ootogi Ryuji as an insolent worm, still trying to stay on top of Kaiba Corporations when he knew that would never succeed for long. Ryuji should know this. He certainly did not invite the inventor of dice monsters to his building and wanted to know exactly what the other man wanted. He was tempted to allow the guards to throw him out of the building; however it would also be amusing to hear what he wanted.

"I'm very surprised you would show yourself back in Domino City," the CEO said finally, just as coldly as what was portrayed in his eyes, after a few minutes of silence, as he watched the traffic below. He sometimes enjoyed staring at the citizens that congregated below, how they scurried off to work, how they rushed to get home. Domino City was riddled with business ventures these days, and the strength of his corporation grew every day. It was not mere coincidence he was a billionaire now.

He still regarded Ootogi as an inferior. What nerve or audacity did he have for coming back to Domino City?

Ootogi sensed the chill behind the CEO's words, not to mention his disgust. He clenched his jaw, however he did not retaliate in a way that said 'you're still the son of a bitch I remembered', although he was tempted to say more or less the same words. The air surrounding Kaiba was intimidating as usual, however Ootogi was not rising to this display of intimidation like some people would, hiding in fear from the emotionless core that looked as though it searched through their own soul.

"I didn't come here to start another childish rivalry between us Kaiba," Ootogi replied just as coldly. "And neither did I come here to start a stare down contest. We've had our differences in the past however I only see what's in the past and I'm more concerned with the future."

Two can play at that game. Kaiba should have realized by now that him still acting like an ass isn't appreciated by anyone now.

"Childish? My manner is not what you call childish," Kaiba interrupted sharply with a soft laugh, as if mocking Ootogi. "What brings you here to Kaiba Corp? You do realize that I could have easily allowed the guards to throw you out. Just be careful not to waste my time Ootogi."

Of course you would, knowing you. You're still the fucking asshole I remembered since BattleCity. You haven't changed Kaiba, have you?

"I came here strictly on business," Ootogi only replied. "I'm developing a new system for the dungeon dice game and I'm looking for-"

"A joint partnership, am I that stupid not to figure that out?" Kaiba interrupted, as if reading Ootogi's mind. Ootogi narrowed his eyes. He should have known this small meeting was some kind of mistake, especially with tension that filled the air of the room. "You intend for my corporation to join a partnership with you because you're developing a new system for your duel monsters game. Does it have a name?"

"Not yet however I'm still working on one."

"I see."

"I'm glad to see I didn't come here to waste my time."

"A partnership isn't something I see fit until I judge for myself whether it's a notable partnership or not. I must congratulate you on your success in American Ootogi…"

"Arigatou Gozaimasu," Ootogi replied.

At least he isn't completely being as ass…

"I take that-"

"I'll think about it," Kaiba interrupted yet again, turning around and looking at Ootogi with ice dark blue eyes. "How long are you staying here?"

It was a demand, not a regular question.

"At least two weeks," Ootogi replied. The CEO smirked, however it was a cold smirk.

"I take that you're going to the little so called get together Yuugi planned…"

"Since when do you hold contempt for Yuugi?" Ootogi asked, noticing the way Kaiba had said his words, as though once again he was disgusted to his stomach. "What had gotten into you?"

Kaiba sneered at the question.

"That's a pathetic question to ask me Ootogi," he replied, hands in his pockets then. "I'm perfectly fine Ootogi, unless of course this is your way of asking why I'm not coming to this excursion."

"I'm assuming that you're not going."

"I have a meeting at the same restaurant. I have no time for childish excursions."

"Is that so?"

"Yes, would I lie?"

"I don't know…you seem like someone I wouldn't want to trust."

"What makes you believe I would trust you?"

"You were always a stuck up asshole, weren't you? I hope you don't start any kind of trouble, it would be a pity if you did."

Then Ootogi rose from his seat slowly. He said this coldly enough to make Kaiba clench his jaw tightly. He knew Kaiba very, very well. The CEO had the tendency to cause tension and otherwise dangerous situations whenever he was around.

Kaiba unclenched his jaw then, only emitting another small laugh. He made his way around the desk just as slowly until he was standing in front of Ootogi. They were almost the same height, the CEO defeating the height similarity by one inch.

"And what kind of trouble would you expect I would cause Ootogi?" he asked in almost a mere whisper.

The tension mounted slowly.

Ootogi narrowed his eyes again.

So did Kaiba.

"The kind of trouble that ruins everything for everyone," Ootogi shot back, unafraid of Kaiba standing in front of him.

"I have no reasons to sit at a pathetic reunion dinner Ootogi. I have a corporation to run and people to see. I'm not someone of your equally pathetic stature to order me around."

"I suggest you watch your words Ootogi; if I were you, I would."

Ootogi and Kaiba stared coldly at each other, dark eyes meeting ice dark blue, sizing each other up. Both of them hadn't realized that the door was opening, revealing Mokuba who was coming to the building after his college courses were done for the day. He worked at Kaiba Corporations and had his own office, however he came to check up on what Kaiba had been doing, only to find his brother and what appeared to be Ootogi glaring at each other. He knew exactly who would win the glaring contest-Kaiba. Not too many people survived the glare from the CEO.

Finally, Ootogi had been the one who broke eye contact as he turned away, making his way towards the door, only to see Mokuba standing by the doorway.

"Mokuba…" he said with a nod, as soon as he reached the other young man.

Mokuba nodded.

"I didn't know you were back in Domino City," he replied and Ootogi nodded again.

"Yeah…I am, but only for two weeks. I came here strictly on pleasure and business."

"Business concerning Seto?"

Ootogi's eyes narrowed further at the name as he looked over his shoulder at Kaiba, whose face held no readable expression.

"Yes," he replied coldly before he eventually left the room. When he was gone, the younger Kaiba looked at his brother. Kaiba simply turned away, making his way around his desk.

"What was that about Seto?" he questioned, however Kaiba ignored the question.

"Close the door Mokuba," he said firmly. Mokuba, rather than argue closed the door and shook his head.

"Again, I'm asking. What was that about?"

"Ootogi…it seems that he's starting a new addition to his dice monsters game," Kaiba replied mockingly, sarcasm within his deep voice as he surveyed the papers on his desk.

"And…what did you say?"

"I'll think about it."

"Why do you keep acting this way?" Mokuba demanded. "I thought you would at least change since Battle City Seto-"

"I'm fine Mokuba, I don't know what you're talking about. I'm perfectly fine…"

"You're fine, okay, okay you're fine. You don't want to tell me that I correctly sensed a whole big 'showdown 'between you and Ootogi when I came in the room, something that was just waiting to happen right?"

"I'm not pretending that I enjoy Ootogi's return to Domino City if you're asking me to do that. I simply detest Ootogi, and that will never change-"

"I'm asking for you to act normal for once Seto," Mokuba interrupted firmly. "Ootogi's not a terrible person. You should at least consider the offer-"

"I said I would think about it, but then again I don't have to give him my answer immediately, do I?" the CEO said, a smirk playing on his face as he turned the large leather clad chair to face the window. Mokuba's face tightened and he had a reason why it tightened. He could sense the sarcasm behind Kaiba's voice and he didn't like it. He couldn't stand his brother acting this way. He already sensed the hot tension between him and Ootogi the minute he came in the office. And with the arrogant smirk on his face, Mokuba knew that something more happened than just the surprising return of Ootogi in Domino City, and his presence at the building.

"…Why do I have the feeling that something else; happened other than this thing with Ootogi?" Mokuba asked, deciding that he would put this thing about Ootogi on hold. It was obvious that his brother wasn't going to sit down and listen to him while he talked about this. So far his voice was firm because he wasn't in the mood to get in an argument with Kaiba because Kaiba always seemed to have the last say.

The smirk on the CEO's face grew larger at Mokuba's question. It was now more of an evil, conniving smile, a smile anyone including Mokuba was familiar with.

"A certain mutt's sister took the new secretary job," Kaiba replied, answering the question. Mokuba's eyes widened for a second. He knew whom his brother meant Jounouchi's sister-Jounouchi Shizuka. Did Jounouchi know about this? Mokuba doubted it. If Jounouchi knew about this arrangement, he would have immediately kept Shizuka from taking this job. Which meant Shizuka must have taken the job without Jounouchi's acknowledgement.

What would she do that?

He also knew his brother well. He would torture Shizuka because she was Jounouchi's sister. As of now, he didn't have an answer to this announcement at all so Kaiba continued.

"It's surprising really, because I would have expected the mutt to object to this whole thing. She didn't even tell him. I'm simply amused by that."

"She just applied for the job today?" Mokuba asked carefully.

"No, she applied for the job at least a week ago. She was called in for an interview with me today. I must say, that interview went fairly well…"

"Take it easy on her Seto," was all that came from Mokuba's mouth. As of now, he didn't even know what else to say. "Don't treat her like you treated the other secretary."

And with that, the younger Kaiba left the office, eventually closing the door behind him. Kaiba sneered again.

You should know me by now Mokuba, I'm your brother. If I take it easy on Jounouchi, then I lose control, and I enjoy control. I am always in control…

With that thought in mind, he laughed softly yet again.

Jounouchi Residence

5:40pm

Jounouchi had never seen or heard Shizuka acting this way in his entire life. She was acting as though she was hiding something and it was slowly becoming relevant to the way she was acting. He had been trying to snap her out of her sudden daze for at least twenty minutes however nothing seemed to have worked.

"Shizuka, are you alright?" Jounouchi demanded, grabbing her by the shoulders and shaking her, his chocolate eyes deep with worry. "Shizuka!"

Tears suddenly began pouring down her cheeks as she was forced by her own subconscious and guilty mind to finally give up the truth.

"I…I…I l-lied to you about….the job Jou…" Shizuka finally said quietly, and yet nervously at the same time. Jounouchi was taken back by the words, his eyes widening from her forced confession.

"W-What? What are you talking about Shiz?" he demanded again, his voice slowly taking a sharp turn, as though he had been slapped in the face.

What…what tha hell is she talkin' about? She…lied…she lied about tha job? What does she mean by that?

…No…I can't tell…him…but Jounouchi isn't stupid, he'll know the truth sooner or later…I can't hide this from him anymore…I have to tell him…

You lied to him…

"K…Kai…" she began, however she was stopped by the darkened look on Jounouchi's face.

"You're not mentionin' what I think you're goin' ta mention," he interrupted coldly, slowly as he pulled away from her slowly. "You're not goin' ta tell me…that you're…"

Shizuka's silence said it all.

Jounouchi gritted his teeth angrily as he turned away from Shizuka, clutching his head tightly.

"Jesus Shizuka, I told ya ta stay away from there!" he shouted, whirling around then. Shizuka was numb, the tears silently rolling down her cheeks. "I warned you! I know him, Yuugi knows him, Anzu fuckin' knows him! He's no good! I promised you that I was goin' ta help you get a fuckin' job! I didn' want ya workin' there for him!"

"I'm not working for him directly Jounouchi okay?" Shizuka shot back, however he defense wasn't strong enough. "I'm working at the bottom floor!"

"An' you expect me ta believe that?" Jounouchi roared, pacing back and forth, while Shizuka watched him, her lips trembling. She didn't know what to do. She betrayed her brother's trust and she knew she couldn't lie to him anymore. She was already nervous and hesitant. Jounouchi was slowly figuring things out. She already felt guilty, the guilt passing through her, combined with the voices that wouldn't live her mind, voices that strangely belonged to Kaiba. "Who knows how many goddamn lies you've told me so far!"

"I didn't mean to lie to you Jou, I swear! I…must have forgotten what you said about staying away from there!"

"I don't believe you…" Jounouchi hissed angrily, his rage flaring up in his eyes. She must have though he was stupid or something. Shizuka had never lied to him and the feeling now filled him with pure anger.

"I needed a job Jou! Kaiba Corporations have the best internships in DominoCity! They easily match what I'm studying at the college!"

"Did it fuckin' kill ta listen ta me Shizuka? You don't get fuckin' experience for ya future by startin' at the fuckin' top! You start at tha fuckin' bottom and work your way up! You know that damn fuckin' well! Jesus, how could you lie ta me like that? How could you? I would never lie to you about anything! I was goin' ta get you a job at Footlocker! I knew someone there who's a managa! An' I was findin' out about more internships for ya ta apply for!"

"That doesn't match with my curriculum at the college Jou!"

"Oh, so that fuckin' job workin' for tha' son of a bitch is better eh? Look Shizuka…you lied to me. You made me believe that you're workin' at some law firm when you're workin' at Kaiba Corporations, for tha fuckin' asshole! I know Kaiba. He sure as hell hasn' changed since BattleCity! I don' wanna see you get hurt by him! What, you couldn' fuckin' understand when I warned ya? I must have fuckin' warn ya for a damn reason Shiz!"

"Am I supposed to wait until you find a job for me Jou?" Shizuka cried angrily, rising from the stool she was sitting on, trembling. "You told me to stay away from there but I figured-"

"Ya figared what? That workin' for Kaiba would be a piece of cake? You know what Shiz? He's gonna work you to death and treat you like trash just like he treats everyone else! He doesn' care about ya damn credentials, hell you're fuckin' related ta me! He's gonna work you like a fuckin' slave and not even care about the feelings he hurts! How tha fuck do you expect he treats his employees? He treats them like shit! Shit Shiz! I've seen them leave tha' buildin' in tears! I've passed by there before! Fine Shiz, ya think I'm just buttin' in ya life right? You deal with your own fuckin' life now. You're a woman, you don' need ta listen ta your brotha…I'm not doin' this fuckin' shit anymore. You made it very fuckin' clear that it's ya life. You're fuckin' life so deal with it-"

"It's not like that Jou!" Shizuka cried again, her hands balled into fists at her sides. "It's not like that-"

"Whoa, whoa, what is going on in here?" a voice demanded, belonging to Mai, as she came in the apartment along with Diana, only to hear the shouting that was going on between Jounouchi and Shizuka. She and Diana had been talking about something until they walked in on the argument.

You lied to him…

Jounouchi glared at Shizuka with disappointment and rage following behind it, his eyes narrowed.

"Ask her," he replied coldly and left, walking pass Shizuka and eventually pushing pass Mai and Diana herself. Seconds later, the door slammed, indicating he had left the apartment. Mai, shocked by the way Jounouchi had left knew that something had happened, as she then turned to look at Shizuka, her eyes questioning the young woman, searching for answers. Shizuka collapsed to the floor suddenly, a scream tearing through her through her throat, tears of a river pouring down her cheeks profusely. She cried freely, drawing up her knees and rocking back and forth.

She had lied to Jounouchi.

She had never lied to Jounouchi before. How could she do this?

Stay away from him…

"Shizuka…what happened?" Mai demanded, rushing over to Shizuka and bent down, Diana eventually following, comforting the young woman.

Stay away from him…

Shizuka sobbed, the salty water dripping into her mouth as she sniffed loudly, only to start sobbing once again.

"J-Jou…I…I…lied to HIM!" she screamed, unable to look at anyone now.

"Lied about what?" Mai asked, trying to make sense of what had taken place. Jounouchi had left so quickly that she didn't have time asking him what happened.

"I…I applied to a job at Kaiba Corp…" Shizuka managed to stammer out, her whole being racked with so many emotions that it frightened her. Mai and Diana looked at her and then back at Shizuka.

It was only then, that Shizuka began crying once again, the tears clouding her vision.

And the voice laughed softly in her mind, simply mocking her, as if saying she had made a terrible mistake.

Chapter 12 finished! Chapter 13 on its way. I promise, the dinner is coming.

I changed the fact that Diana would know about Shizuka working at Kaiba Corporations. I have a reason why Jounouchi found out earlier. Don't think I didn't have a reason!
