Under the Mistletoe
Chapter Five - …And also…
Monday, December 19 - Day 6 and counting down…
Yugi yawned quietly, discreetly covering his mouth, as he put his pencil down. He was taking his last final exam of the semester and was starting to get very tired. The teen glanced around and felt better when he noticed that many of the other appeared to be feeling just as tired and stressed as him. He looked back at his test paper and sighed for a moment as he wrote down another answer to a World History question. He then gazed at the clock and smiled slightly as he saw that there were only twenty minutes left for the test and he had only one more answer to finish.
The spiky haired teen chewed on his pencil for a moment, trying to think of the answer to the exam's last question. 'In your own words, write down the reasons why Benito Mussolini and Italy entered the conflict known as World War II. [1]' He groaned as he wracked his brain for the answers and chewed on his pencil even more. It was the one subject in history that he didn't really study because he was sick at the time. So, the young duelist decided to write down something that he remembered from a documentary he watched a couple of months ago.
Yugi finished writing down his answer and smiled as he put his pencil away. He glanced back up at the clock and grinned as it said that there were ten minutes left. He gathered his things, placed them in his backpack, and walked up to the front of the lecture hall. He handed the test over to the professor who just nodded at the small teen. The duelist then casually walked down the aisle and exited the hall. He stretched his arms out for a moment before putting his backpack on his back.
The amethyst eyed boy smiled softly as he watched the snow begin to fall gently to the ground, creating a fantasy-like setting. He almost imagined a unicorn galloping through the trees in the central park of Domino University main campus. He smiled again as he strolled through the snow. He loved this time of year because the world seemed like a different place…a place where everyone can live in peace. The teen giggled slightly as he felt some of the falling snow land on his face and he grinned like a young child.
"Aw, how adorably cute," a female voice called out. "You look like a five year old doing that, Yugi."
"Oh Tea, stop making fun," Yugi called out as he turned around to face his friend, a smile on his face. He knew that she was only teasing. "Anyway, what are you doing here? I thought you still have your dance school classes throughout the week…"
The brunette girl giggled softly as she linked her arm through Yugi's and held him close. "I did, but the dean cancelled classes for the rest of the week," she answered lightly, her blue eyes sparkling. "And then we have the regular two week break between semesters."
Yugi smiled and let the taller girl lead him through the park and towards the parking lot. "That's nice, Tea," he replied. "Since you will have all that free time…would you mind helping me and Yami out at the game shop?"
Tea sighed and shook her head. "I'm sorry Yugi, but I have to go out of town," she began to explain. "Mom and Dad are going to fly out to Aspen, Colorado, and they are going to take me too. I wanted to be here with you and the others during Christmas."
The teen sighed and smiled warmly at the girl. "That's okay. Just make sure you get me a postcard when you're there," he smiled brightly, his eyes shining.
"I can do that," Tea stated, her own eyes shining vibrantly. "But…um…do you…do you think…that you…go out with me tonight?"
Yugi blushed lightly, not knowing what to say. He had a crush on the girl next to him for the longest time and then realized that his feelings for her were like she was a sister. He glanced up at the gray sky, letting more of the snow fall onto his upturned face.
"Yugi?" the brunette asked, curious as to the boy's expression. "Are you okay?"
The spiky haired teen lowered his face and turned to look at his friend. "I'm…I'm sorry, Tea. I promised Yami that I would watch the store as soon as I get home from taking my finals today."
The girl's blue eyes turned stormy and pushed Yugi away from her angrily. His amethyst eyes shined with hurt and confusion from her actions. "T-T-Tea?"
"You little bastard!" Tea nearly screamed loudly, her eyes blazing with anger. "I have been building up the courage to ask you out for nearly two months! I thought that you would have wanted to at least have a date with me! I've seen you stare at me in years past…I know that you have a crush on me. So I know that you are lying to me! Don't lie to me!"
"I had a crush on you and I'm not lying," the tri-colored haired duelist whispered quietly, tears beginning to form in his eyes. "But…you are more like a sister to me…one of my best friends…"
The brown haired girl growled as she slapped Yugi, leaving a red handprint on his cheek. "Oh I see…I'm not good enough for you! You can go to hell for all I care, Yugi!" Tea then pushed the teen so hard that he fell down onto the cement sidewalk, hitting his head on the hard surface. He didn't even notice the girl leaving as he sat up dazed from the fall.
The short teen finally was able to stand up and walked dazedly towards his beat up car [2]. Since the weather was getting colder and the snow was falling heavier now, it took a few tries with the ignition to get the vehicle started. As he drove out of the parking lot, Yugi started to feel a little dizzy, but he decided that it was nothing to worry about. He continued to drive along the streets and decided to stop at the park he and his friends would go to from time to time. But during the drive, the boy's eyes started to droop…
Suddenly, the car wrenched violently and forced Yugi's eyes to widen and make sure to keep the vehicle under control. A flopping sound was heard and the rust-bucket was jerking in strange movements. That made the young duelist to think that his car probably developed a flat tire.
Yugi groaned as he had to pull over to the side of the road. He got out of the car and examined the right front tire and grimaced as he realized that he forgot to get a spare tire. Just as he was about to pull out his cell phone, someone on a motorcycle came by and stopped. The rider stared at the teen for a moment before pulling off his helmet. It revealed a young man with light blonde hair and lavender eyes.
"Malik…" Yugi breathed out slowly, his vision becoming slightly blurry.
Malik got off of his motorcycle and made his way over to the shorter teen. "I see that you need some help," he said as he motioned to the flat tire of the car.
The spiky haired boy nodded as he pulled out his cell phone. "Yeah…I was driving over to the park when the tire went flat…Ooh…I don't feel so good…" he mumbled as he felt his legs become rubbery. The last thing he remembered was falling to the ground and something nice and warm catching him…
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Yugi woke up only to find himself in a hospital room and dressed in a hospital gown. Feeling very confused, he tried to sit up only to get a raging headache and a severe bout of nausea. He heard someone breathing evenly in the room, indicating that this person was asleep. The teen slowly turned his head so he wouldn't get dizzy once again and became shocked at the person who was there.
Malik was sleeping peacefully in a chair by the window, the light of the setting sun glinting off of the Egyptian's blonde hair. The light made the teen's hair appear more golden than usual and brought out the bronze in the boy's tanned skin even more. He was wearing dark gray jeans and a light lavender sweater and his black leather biker's jacket was hanging from the back of the chair. His arms were crossed across his chest and his head was leaning against the back of the chair, his golden hair slightly mussed [3]. All in all, the sleeping teen looked very peaceful and adorable in Yugi's eyes.
The spiky haired teen gasped softly and covered his mouth at that thought, his amethyst eyes going wide for a moment. 'How could I think of Malik in that way?' he thought to himself as he admired the sleeping Egyptian's form. 'Anyway, I don't think that he's CA…I feel that I can trust him and I know I can't trust Malik…' He sighed softly and leaned back into his pillow and closed his eyes. Soon, he fell into a light sleep.
At that moment, Yami came walking into the room and smiled at gently at his hikari and then glared slightly at the blonde sleeping in the chair. He really did not want that boy to be anywhere near Yugi, but if it wasn't for Malik being there at the right time…His aibou might not be alive right now. The spirit was carrying a bag with him and set it on the bed next to the young teen. Just as he was about to hold the boy's hand, the duelist opened his eyes and smiled lightly.
"Hi, Yami," Yugi remarked softly and gave the ancient Pharaoh a confused expression. "Yami…why am I here in the hospital?"
Yami gazed at the young teen for a moment. "I'm not entirely sure…I got a phone call from Malik saying that he was bringing you to the hospital. You passed out, aibou."
The spiky haired teen still had a confused look on his face. "But I don't know why…"
It was at this time that the blonde Egyptian woke up and turned his head to face both Yami and Yugi. "I was taking my last finals at the college today and saw Yugi and followed him."
"Explain yourself, Malik," the spirit replied, the tone going low and threatening. He did not trust the lavender eyed youth. "Why did you follow him?"
Malik sighed for a moment and sat up straight in his chair, never taking his eyes off of the two males before him. "Like I was saying, I was taking my last finals today. My last one was in the lecture hall next to Yugi's. Anyway, I saw the shrimp walking ahead of me with that weird 'friendship' girl that hangs around all of you losers. The next thing I know, Yugi was pushed to the ground by that girl and he hit his head hard on the concrete sidewalk. I don't know what made that bitch do that because I was not close enough to hear the conversation."
Yami gasped for a moment but never took his crimson eyes off of blonde. "I hope for your sake, Malik, that you have a good reason for calling Tea a bitch."
"Of course I do," the Egyptian explained while running a hand through his soft blonde hair. "I think that Yugi said something that she didn't like and showed her true colors. If she truly cared for Yugi, Tea would have checked to see if he was okay after hitting his head so hard."
Yugi blushed lightly and sighed as he looked down at the bed sheets. "Tea…she asked me out on a date for tonight and I told her I couldn't," he began to clarify so the others would understand. "She…she thought that I was lying. I would never lie to her or any of my friends…" His eyes shined with tears as a lone tear slowly made its way down the teen's soft, red cheek. He felt something soft wipe his face and his amethyst eyes went wide to see that it was Malik using a tissue to dab the tear from his cheek [4]. This made the young duelist's face blush a little more.
"Th…thanks, Malik," Yugi stated softly and saw that the Egyptian only nodded and smirked.
For some reason, this made Yami slightly furious and a little jealous. Alright, he was very jealous but he knew that his hikari would never feel the same way towards him. "Malik," he started slowly, "can you finish explaining why you were following my hikari?"
Malik snorted and made a face at the Pharaoh before speaking. "Calm down, Pharaoh…I saw Yugi get up but he seemed to be a little unsteady on his feet. Before I could reach him, the shrimp already got in his shitbox and was driving away. So, I hopped on my motorcycle and followed him just to make sure that he was okay. Suddenly, I saw the rust-mobile swerve and run over some rocks in the road. That's when he pulled to the side of the road and checked out the car. I decided to pull over and help Yugi and it was at that time that the shrimp decided that being unconscious was a good thing."
The tri-colored haired spirit nodded slowly. The strange Egyptian's explanation was acceptable and he realized that Malik did not mean any harm to his hikari…well, not this time anyway. "Thank you, Malik, for helping Yugi," Yami thanked the blonde. "I don't know what would have happened to him if you weren't there."
The lavender eyed teen shrugged his shoulders and smirked. "Well…now I have you in my debt, Pharaoh…"
Yami's crimson eyes seemed to become redder and then sighed. "So, you were only just helping Yugi just to get a favor from me? I should have…" He stopped talking when the blonde began laughing. "What?"
"The look on your face, Yami…it was priceless!" Malik laughed some more, finding the situation hilarious. After he managed to calm down, he smirked once more. "No, I'm not asking for any favors. This is supposed to be a holiday season, correct? Then there is the possibility that I was actually trying to be nice. Being nice…it feels strange to me. By the way, Pharaoh, aren't you going to show the shrimp the bag you left on the bed?"
"You are impossible," the spirit muttered at Malik before looking at Yugi. "Aibou, this bag…it was left at the game shop today by the postman. It was addressed to you…I think that it's another gift."
Malik raised and eyebrow in curiosity as he spied the light blush on Yugi's face. "A gift? You got a secret admirer or something, shrimp?"
Yugi blushed a little more and nodded. "Yes…and whoever this person is just seems to know everything about me," he answered. He then gave a warning look at his darker half, who seemed to be pouting at the moment. "Yami, do not look like that at me. I think that it's perfectly fine to let Malik know about C.A."
Yami rolled his eyes as the Egyptian seemed to be interested. "Who is C.A.?" the blonde asked.
The young teen smiled dreamily and sighed softly. "I really don't know…C.A. stands for 'Christmas Angel'…this person has been sending me gifts and lovely notes since last Thursday. He said that…"
"It's a guy?" Malik interrupted, grinning widely. "I didn't know that you were gay."
"Malik!" Yugi exclaimed indignantly before continuing. "Anyway, these gifts have been the best thing to have happened to me since getting the Millennium Puzzle." He paused for a moment to look down at his neck. "Where…where is my pendant? It's not around my neck."
The lavender eyed Egyptian pointed to the stand next to Yugi's bed. The pendant was there. "I told those incompetent nurses to leave it alone. I think that one of them was interested in acquiring it. When I saw you wearing it back at the laundromat on Saturday, you were very possessive over it. I was just making sure that you didn't lose it."
Amethyst eyes gazed at Malik thankfully as he reached over to the stand and put the pendant back around his neck. "Thank you very much…I really did not want to lose it," Yugi remarked softly.
During this exchange, Yami had been watching the Egyptian carefully. He noticed how close the blonde was to Yugi and how kind he seemed to be acting. "Aibou, since it seems that you don't mind the psycho knowing about 'Christmas Angel,' why don't you see what is in that bag?"
Yugi stuck his tongue out at the ancient Pharaoh. "Yami! Malik isn't a psycho anymore…I think." This earned a mild glare from the blonde. The tri-colored haired teen giggled innocently at Malik and then took the bag that was next to him. He opened it up and tilted his head to one side as he lifted a large brightly wrapped box out of the bag. He examined it for a moment before tearing the wrapper off the box carefully.
He caught his breath as he opened the lid and pulled out a large figurine [5] that was about 24 inches in height. It was made entirely out of amethyst and stood on a base made out of gray marble. The figurine itself was an angel…but not just any angel, it seemed. It was a lovely creature dressed in an ancient clothing style, but not a style that anyone could place. This amethyst statuette was finely crafted, but it also appeared to be quite old. Despite that fact, this angel was an exquisite piece that made Yugi just stare at it.
"That is…just an amazing figurine," Malik stated slowly. "I wonder who stole that for you."
Yugi glared at the Egyptian for a moment. "Malik! That wasn't very nice."
The blonde just shrugged and smirked once more. "I'm usually not nice…" he grinned, making the shorter teen squirm slightly when he winked at him.
Yami rolled his eyes and put his hand in the bag and pulled out an envelope. He handed it to Yugi and gave Malik a glare before returning his attention to his hikari. "Yugi…why don't you open this now? I'm sure that it would make you feel better."
Yugi nodded as he took the envelope from the spirit and then eagerly tore it open. He then gingerly pulled out a piece of parchment that was written in the familiar elegant calligraphy and began reading the letter.
'Dear Yugi,
I saw your reaction when you opened my latest gift to you yesterday. Just by seeing your happy smile made my heart soar. I felt like an eagle flying high amongst the clouds, letting the winds flow over my wings to lift me up higher. Oh, how I ache to hold you in my arms. I ache to hold your beautiful gaze in my eyes throughout eternity.
This latest gift to you was something that had been in my family for a very long time. How long? I cannot say for certain. All I know is that it was handed down through out the generations to the one that has stolen the heart of the current owner…the current owner was me and is now you. You have stolen my heart, Yugi, as I have stated before. Remember what I said that amethysts represent in the last letter? It will forever apply to you in my opinion.
However, in my mind, the angel represents you because that is what you are. You are an angel who has brightened my dreary world of darkness. I just know that you came down from heaven, deciding to grace us poor, mere mortals with your divine presence. If you would allow it, I would be your humble servant for the rest of my life. I love you so much, Yugi, that it sometimes hurts not being able to be near you.
Anyway, I have come to the realization that I unintentionally gave you two clues instead of just one in my last letter to you. That being the case, you will not receive a clue this time around. I do promise you that you will have a new clue with the next gift.
Until the next gift, I bid thee farewell, my love. Just five more gifts till we are fated to meet under the mistletoe.
My heart is with you forever,
Christmas Angel'
Yugi couldn't help but smile softly at the latest message. Each one just made his heart tremble with some emotion he could not identify. His eyes closed for a moment and sighed dreamily as he let Yami take the parchment out of his hands. Whoever C.A. was truly seemed to know the teen inside and out…
"This person must be nuts," Malik remarked as he took the paper out of Yami's hands and read the message. "Who would want to spend so much time in giving ten different gifts to the shrimp?"
Before Yami could defend Yugi's honor, the young teen shook his head at his darker half. "Yami…please don't say anything," he pleaded before giving the Egyptian a mild glare. "Look, I thank you very much for saving me, but could you please leave if you are going to continue insulting me?"
Malik seemed to be instantly contrite, his lavender eyes looking directly into Yugi's amethyst eyes. "I'm sorry…shrimp…" He chuckled lightly as he grabbed his jacket and made his way to the exit. "Oh, Yugi…before I fell asleep, the doctor said that you would have to stay here overnight. You got a concussion from hitting your head on the sidewalk. Take care…shrimp."
The blonde Egyptian laughed maniacally as he left the hospital room. That was when Yami threw the figurine's box at him and hit him on the head. That caused the teen to curse violently in English and Egyptian as he stalked down the hallway. The Pharaoh then turned his head to see that Yugi was lost in his thoughts. That made the spirit decide to leave the room in order to find Malik and have a long talk with him…
A VERY long talk…

Anyway, here are a few explanations:
[1] - I really couldn't think of a good exam question that would be in a college level history class…*sweatdrops*…so I decided to make one up…*grins*
[2] - I don't really know what kind of car Yugi would have…just that it was beat-up, rusty old thing that has four doors…If someone could think of a car that would make a good shitbox, let me know…*laughs*
[3] & [4] - This is just a hopeful request…I would love to see if there are any artists out there who could draw these for me…^_^ I would love to see what other people picture in their minds when they read these two scene descriptions.
[5] - This was another gift suggestion by Red Dragon of Egypt…I think that it was a good one…^_^
Also, I think that I may have given away on who 'Christmas Angel' is…*chuckles* Many of you wonderful reviewers were right in their guesses. And no, I'm not going to say who it is anyway…^_~
Teasers for Chapter Six:
"Joey…please calm down…" Yugi pleaded, his hand gripping his friend's arm tightly.
"But Bakura just HIT ON YOU! How can you be calm about that? That guy is insane!" Joey yelled as he was being held back by the shorter teen…
