Chapter Four

Malik quietly entered the game shop after Bakura, the little bell singling their arrival. "I'll see about talking to Yugi…just wait, alright?" He received a nod in answer and walked up to the counter, quietly and quickly asking for Yugi and being directed upstairs. He made a motion for Bakura to follow him and found his way to Yugi's room, finding the shorter teen looking rather spaced out on the bed and staring at the wall.

Yugi blinked at the closing of his bedroom door, turning violet eyes to look at the two people entering. He hadn't expected to be followed home, or disturbed tonight at all. He'd told his Grandfather that he was tired and just wanted to sleep. "Uhm…hello…"

"Hello Yugi, can we talk to Yami?" As always, Bakura's English accent was polite, a smile on his lips.

"Uhm...Yami doesn't.. really wanna talk right now.." Yugi kept his violet hued eyes on the floor, catching his lower lip between his teeth. "He's ... in his room..."

"Well, I hope you know that we're none too happy with him." Malik's voice was cold. He hated seeing his friends hurt, and Seto had looked more than hurt when he left the room. "Either Seto didn't tell him, or your dear Yami was just out to hurt him."

Yugi could feel his Yami stirring a bit in his soul room. He knew that Yami cared, truly, for the elder Kaiba brother, but he didn't know how far it went. /Yami?/

//Ask him what he means// the mental urging was quiet, nothing like the powerful voice he was used to.

"What do you mean Malik?"

"I mean about the things in his past." Malik watched as Yugi shook his head. "well, then I guess he'll find out, and you had better not spread it around, got it?" He received nods from both Yugi and Bakura before he went on. "Seto told me once when he got drunk...hell the fact that he got drunk lays on your shoulders Yugi..it was right after he broke up with you. Anyway, he told me everything..." He found a seat momentarily and straddled the back of it, not looking at either of them.

"When Seto was a kid, with his biological parents still, it wasn't very pretty. His mother was beat by his father, and in order to keep Mokuba from him, Seto ..gave himself... to his father. As an insurance I guess. He was only about seven when it started...and his mother was pregnant with Mokuba at the time. Before he was born, Seto told me it was for his mother's sake, so she could have the baby. I'm not going into details on how he was raped and beaten before Mokuba was born....but it went just to rape afterwards, because his father could start beating on his mother again.

"About three years later, during the fire, Seto did get his little brother out, but he told me he DID have time to go back for his mother and father, but he didn't. He let them die, and I guess he hoped for a better homelife afterward.. after the orphanage... They were safe there, and when Mr. Kaiba finally did take them from there, it wasn't pretty either. Sure, it was okay for awhile... They were getting settled in. But even at ten, Seto was cute, and yes, I say that without hesitation, because I have seen pictures.

"Their new 'father' had started him on a rigorous education during the day, with strict visitation between him and his brother. It wasn't all happy, like everyone thinks. The nights belonged to the old man in his bedroom...and I'm sure you can guess what happened. Once again, he was raped and tortured like before. By the time he was 12, he was fed up with the abuse and smothered him with a pillow. That's why he didn't cry at the funeral either. "

Malik sighed softly. /where's a glass of water when you need one.../ "He was forced to take over the business at that point in time, and that left him less time with his brother. Even still, he went through a long trial to prove that only a nanny was needed to take care of them. If either of you remember, think back to when he was around fourteen... He was nice at the beginning of the year, but somehow over the summer he turned cold...and sent Mokuba to that prep school. He couldn't take the pressures of running Kaiba Corp, raising his kid brother, and going to school himself. You can only do so many things at once and do them well. Bakura and I are lucky he hasn't pushed us away as a nuisance yet.

"But with Yami, things changed. He offered the one thing that no one had touched yet." He raised solemn lilac eyes to look directly at Yugi. "You almost got to it, but he gave his heart to Yami. He trusted him to not tear it to shreds. But that's exactly what he did. I don't know what Seto's going to do now, but I'm not going to rule out suicide as a viable option." Malik fell silent, eyes staring into Yugi's for an indeterminable amount of time.

The other two were speechless for a bit, eyes locked on the blonde Egyptian. They'd both had no idea; both had thought Seto was like he was because it was just 'fun' to be that way. Bakura slowly tore his eyes from Malik's, gaze going to the floor. "I think..I'm going to check on him."

"I'm coming with you." Malik rose with him, heading again for Yugi's door. He paused and looked back at a small sound from the small teen on the bed.

"I... I'll tell Yami... He didn't know... he didn't want to be hurt himself..." He knew his darker self now had the worst guilt complex based on Seto, and if Seto had killed himself, then he didn't know what would happen.

"Well, I hope you tell him in time then." Malik left the room with a bitter look to the teen as a parting shot, leaving him with tears in his eyes. "I don't care if he wants to tell us that Yami is a part of himself or not, but the fact stands that it is partly Yugi's fault that Seto was hurt Bakura."

"I know I know..." They walked past the confused grandfather and out, heading back to the now deserted mansion. When they arrived, they were both covered in snow, though it was blending into Bakura's hair quite nicely. After not receiving an answer for three minutes at the door, they let themselves in, exchanging a worried look as they both ran for the stairs and Seto's bedroom, finding it surprisingly empty.

Exploring a bit proved to be useless and they soon found themselves right back where they started. "Maybe he left a ... note..." Bakura went over to where a single piece of stationary was sitting on top of a vanity-type table in the corner, his heart dreading what he would find.

"Read it out loud if it's a note."

"I will..." Bakura borrowed the chair and glanced over it before reading aloud,

"Malik and Bakura,

I know that it will be one of you to find this, because you two are the only ones that I can say truly care about me, and I know you'll be the only ones that would even care if I went missing. You will more than likely consider this a rash decision, but we're leaving Japan for America within the hour I'm writing this. Nobody other than you two seemed to even care that I do have a heart, and I thank you two for not turning away when I needed it most. However, I don't wish to see Yami anymore. I trusted him with things, and after last night, it's clear to me that I meant nothing to him. I know you'll more than likely think I'm strange, yet ... I wanted to say that I do love you two in my own way, because I doubt that I'll see you for a long time. Goodbye, my friends..
Seto"

Bakura just stared down at the note, eyes on the couple of smudges that were obvious tear stains. Upon feeling a hand on his shoulder, he looked up, eyes shining at his lover. "At least...he didn't kill himself...ne?"

Malik nodded and took the note from Bakura's fingers, pulling him up to hug him tightly. "He'll come back... and Yami will have lost what probably meant a lot. Try to not worry..."

Though, worrying was all they would do, for the next three years. It wouldn't be until then that Seto Kaiba would return to Japan, his brother in tow.
