Chapter 2Enemies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yugi woke up to the sound of some one pounding on the bathroom door. It took a moment for him to get re-oriented himself to his surroundings. Yugi sat up quickly, remembering the events that just took place.
"Yugi! Are you all right? You've been in there for over an hour!" shouted Yami. 'Aw, shit!' thought Yugi, 'I didn't think that would take that long!'
"Sorry, Yami!" replied Yugi, "I, um must've…….just…….fallen asleep!" He quickly made up an excuse as he threw on his shirt, covering the Wolf mark on his chest. He flung the door open to come face to face with a concerned Yami. Yugi flushed at the close proximity of he and Yami, not noticing the look on Yami's face. Yami's heart and breathing quickened as he gazed into Yugi's violet eyes. They stared at each other for a few seconds, which seemed like an eternity to Yugi. Finally, he broke the silence.
"Um, I……I think I better get to bed. You know, feeling a little tired," said Yugi, fixing on a small smile.
"Huh? O-oh, yeah. Well, uh, good night, aibou," said Yami, blinking a couple times, coming out of his daze.
"Good night Yami," Yugi murmured as he entered his room, shutting the door. Yami slid to the floor in the hall. He sighed as he thought about Yugi.
"Oh, my light, don't you know what you're doing to me?" he muttered under his breath. Every time he saw Yugi, his heart would quicken and an odd emotion would fill him.
Could it be love?
Yugi sat in the darkness of his room, willing his heart to slow down. He loved Yami, but he knew he would never be able to tell him. Yami would be disgusted and probably never talk to Yugi again. He sighed as he forced his feelings away.
Quickly, Yugi walked to the window. He looked outside, where there was a slim crescent moon, half hidden by the clouds. Suddenly, a dark figure landed outside his window and a caw was heard.
"Shadow!" cried Yugi happily as he opened the window, "You're here!"
'Yep! What, did you think it'd take me longer?'
'Well, yeah, actually! You weren't exactly the fastest flier before,' said Yugi, reverting to mind speech.
'Hey! You know that was when I was sick!' said Shadow, looking at Yugi reproachfully.
'Then why did you arrange that race? If you thought you could win, you must've have been REALLY sick.'
'Hmmph. Oh ye of little faith.' said Shadow. He hopped off Yugi's arm, onto the bed and started to peck a hole in the thick quilt. Pretty soon, he pulled something out of the hole and laid it on the bed. It was a tiny silver ball, with intricate carvings on it.
'Hey, how'd you know it was there?' asked Yugi. 'Did you learn some kind of new trick?'
Shadow sweatdropped. 'Uh, Yugi, I've had that ability from since I was born. You've seen me use it before'
'I have? Oh yeah, I have!' He smiled, remembering. Yugi quickly turned serious. 'Why did you take it out, anyway?'
'Hey, it's nice out tonight. Since I'm sure you haven't changed in a while, why not get some exercise now? You'll probably need to be able to move in your wolf form later.'
'Now?' asked Yugi looking at the clock. 8 o'clock. 'Yeah, I guess I have some time.' He stood up and peeked out the door. The hallway was empty, so Yugi assumed Yami was already in his room, but he locked his door, just in case. Then he opened the window farther and glanced outside. The street was empty, lit only by the single streetlight. Finally he was ready.
'Are you done?' asked Shadow.
'Yeah, yeah, hold your horses' said Yugi. He picked up the silver ball and concentrated. It started to glow a pale silvery light as gripped it in his had tightly. The ball seemed to sink into his hand as he began to change. Yugi clenched his teeth when he felt his organs and bones rearrange themselves. It didn't really hurt, it just felt odd. Silvery fur grew along his skin as his clothes disappeared and his hands and feet reformed into paws. Pretty soon he was done. He just stood there for a moment before shaking his head and slowly moving his limbs. 'Wow, that felt really different from before.'
'Uh, well it would feel that way after not transforming for several years. Now can we go outside?'
'Oh yeah!' said Yugi running forward. Suddenly he tripped on his backpack and fell on his face. '………ow. I'm okay.' Then he leapt onto his desk to get out the window. Or at least that was what he was trying to do. Key word trying. He didn't exactly completely make it onto the desk. Only his front feet did. His back half was still on the floor. Yugi just growled as he scrabbled to totally get on the desk. Once he did, he heard Shadow's cawing laughter. 'Hey!'
'Hahahahahahah! I'm hahah sorry hahahahaha! That haha just looked hahahahahahah so haha funny! Hahahahah!' said Shadow, practically falling off the bed with laughter.
'Oh, shut up and let's go,' grumbled Yugi as he peeked out the window. The street was empty. He took a deep breath and jumped out the two-story high window. As he neared the sidewalk, he spread his limbs and landed softly and quietly on the ground. Shadow flew out the window after him and landed on a nearby lamppost.
'So, where to first?' asked Shadow.
'The park,' said Yugi, turning toward it. He trotted along, keeping in the shadows, his vision enhanced enough to see in the dark clearly. Like a ghost, Yugi disappeared into the park's dark foliage, the black raven following above.
The park was eerily silent at night. No lampposts were placed inside, so only the slim moon lighted the place. The silver wolf looked around before communicating to Shadow, who had perched on a branch.
'Good, no one's here. But, could you still keep a look out? It might be safer.'
'Yeah, yeah, just stop yapping and start moving!'
Yugi hmmphed and started running through the trees, leaping over rocks and ducking under low branches. He ran around and around a clump of trees till he started to get dizzy. With a quiet wuf, he flopped onto the ground to rest a little. But soon he was up again, jumping over the fence and onto the paved path snaking through the park. Yugi zigzagged from one side of the walkway to the other, as fast as he could.
'Hey, Shadow! Not bad, eh?' gloated Yugi. Shadow didn't answer. 'Shadow?'
'Shhh! There's someone here!'
Yugi started. 'What?! Who?'
'How should I know? You'd better hide.' With that, Shadow took flight high above the trees to see who it was.
Suddenly, a shadow fell across the ground, as footsteps sounded. Panicking, Yugi dove into the trees again. The steps stopped. He peeked out from behind the trees……
….only to come face to face with menacing brown eyes and an evil grin. With a yelp, Yugi jerked backwards in surprise. Quickly, he turned to race away, but suddenly something fell around his neck, choking him and jerking him back roughly.
"Now, now, puppy. Hold still and I won't have to hurt you too badly," came Bakura's dark voice.
Yugi lay on the ground, gasping as he refilled his lungs with air. 'How did he know I was here? Wait! He must think I'm just a wolf! I can't let him know that I'm Yugi!'
"Heh. Boss'll be pleased I found a silver wolf. I'm sure he'll want this fur for his collection too," said Bakura with a chuckle.
Yugi froze. 'F-fur?! Collection?! Oh, shit!' With that, Yugi started struggling in earnest. He leapt to his feet and started straining against the collar around his neck. But Bakura yanked at the rope, forcing Yugi back down again. Yugi snarled, snapping at the rope that the tomb robber was holding. Suddenly, the raven, that had been forgotten up to then, shrieked, diving down to Bakura, pecking and scratching at his eyes and throat.
He loosened his grip on the rope for a second, as he struggled to protect his face. "Damn bird! Get off!" Yugi used that moment to pull out of his grasp and sprinted away, back into the trees, dragging the rope behind him. He kept running, dodging trees and branches, only one thought in his head.
To get away.
After a while, Yugi slowed down, panting heavily. He flopped down near a tiny stream as he regained his breath. His ears were perked up, listening intently for any sounds that might indicate someone following. There was only silence. Yugi sighed in relief as he closed his eyes in fatigue. His thoughts roiled around his head. 'Why was he looking for a silver wolf? And who is BOSS?! Who's he working for?' Yugi lay there, deep in thought, for several moments more.
Suddenly, an uneasy feeling made itself known in his gut. Yugi opened his eyes and looked around. He was so busy thinking that he didn't realize how quiet it was. Too quiet. No insects chirping, no nocturnal animals prowling around, hell, he couldn't even hear nor feel Shadow's presence.
'Shadow?' he called out cautiously as he stood up. Then the violet-eyed wolf realized he still had Bakura's collar on. Growling, he pawed at it, trying to get it off, but paws weren't meant for grabbing and pulling off collars. So, with a sigh, he concentrated on an image of the intricately carved silver ball. Slowly, his form shrunk slightly as his fur disappeared and his limbs and organs shifted. Yugi fell on his butt as his clothes reappeared, feeling a little like his human body didn't fit. But, after shaking his arms and stretching, he felt like himself again, albeit a little tired.
After flexing his arms and fingers, Yugi reached up and gripped the collar, feeling the cold metal beneath his fingertips. 'Wait a sec. Metal?' He felt around it, looking for a clasp, or something that opens the collar, but all he felt was smooth metal and the rope knotted around it.
'The fuck?! How the hell did he get this thing on me then?! And more importantly, how do I get this damned thing off?!!!' With a snap, he jerked the thick rope off. The metal ring fit his neck almost perfectly, icily cold against his skin. It wasn't like his neck buckle, which was made of much more comfortable leather, instead this collar had to be made of metal. Panicking slightly, Yugi started pulling at it, but it wouldn't budge. 'How am I supposed to hide this?' he thought, 'and how can I keep Bakura from seeing or sensing this?' After several unsuccessful tries to get it off, Yugi had come to the conclusion that it was created by magic and utilized it.
As the tri-colored boy thought, a dark shape landed next to him. He started, but calmed down when he realized it was just Shadow. The black bird seemed pleased with himself.
'Heh heh. Chased that albino hunter out of the park. Rather fun actually,' said Shadow, smiling. Then he got a closer look at Yugi's face. 'Yugi? What's wrong?'
'The…….collar. It…..it won't come off,' came Yugi's quiet thought. Shadow hopped closer, examining the silver collar. 'How……how am I gonna hide this?'
'Wow. It's obviously magic. Strong magic at that. I don't think I can get it off by myself,' murmured Shadow. They sat in silence for a several moments as they thought about what to do. 'Erm, why don't you just pretend it's a new necklace or something? Just until we figure out a way to remove it.'
Yugi sighed. 'Alright. At least Ryou doesn't let Bakura come to school.' He suddenly realized how late it was. 'Ack! It's nearly 12?! We were out here for four hours?! Come on, Shadow!' With that, Yugi quickly picked up the silver ball, which he had dropped onto the grass earlier, and changed into his wolf form. Then he quickly ran out of the park and headed back home, Shadow gliding high above in the night air.
