You! Off My Planet!
Chapter Five
Today was the day that Joey had been looking forward to the past few days. It was Friday, classes were finally over and it was also his one month anniversary to Tristan. He really wanted to cook up a special dinner for his boyfriend so he rushed home to drop off his books. He opened his apartment door swiftly and ran to his room and threw his books onto his bed haphazardly. While he was in there, he looked over his wardrobe and grimaced. In his mind, he didn't have anything that would look good enough for his special someone. He finally found something that would be decent enough and laid it out on his bed.
The blonde glanced around his room to look for his car keys. His gaze rested on a withered pale orange rose that was sitting in a vase on his dresser. He gingerly touched the dried petals of the rose and picked it up, sniffing the gentle fragrance that still emanated from the flower. He was unable to find out who gave that single rose to him and it was sort of eating him up inside. At first, he thought that it was Tristan as an apology for what had happened at the restaurant two weeks ago. His boyfriend had said no but was sorry for the incident. So they had made up swiftly at the pointy haired man's place.
The day after the restaurant episode, Joey was staring at the rose while sitting at the dining room table when his roommate came home from spending some time with his little brother. The blonde had looked over at Seto and became slightly confused by the expression on the brunette's face. For a moment, he thought that he saw jealousy and then recognition on the other's face, but it was gone almost as instantly as it had appeared. After that, the taller young man had left him alone for the next few days.
The honey eyed male just shrugged as he found his keys and then left his room swiftly. He was about to open the front door to leave the apartment when his roommate came bursting in, nearly hitting Joey in the process.
"Watch where you're going, moneybags," the blonde nearly hissed, his eyes narrowing. "You could hurt someone just rushing into places like that.
Seto glanced at Joey and smirked at the other. "Pup, you should be careful," he remarked airily. "Waiting at the door for your master isn't safe. Someone just might step on you. Then again, that might not be a bad thing."
Joey growled at the insult, but let it slide…for now. "Just leave me alone, you jerk," he responded, trying to keep the anger out of his voice. "I have to get some things for dinner. You ARE going over to see your brother, right?"
The CEO scowled at the pup and nodded. "Yes, I am, but I won't be gone for too long, pup. I should be back around eight tonight."
The blonde just waved his hand dismissively. "Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, moneybags. Tristan is coming over tonight and you don't have any say in the matter. Understood?"
"Yes," Seto mocked, some emotion flickering in his eyes. "But don't expect me to be nice to that idiot. He's a walking disaster…I don't know what you see in him." That last part was whispered quietly to himself so the blonde wouldn't be able to hear it. He watched his roommate open the door and depart, leaving the brunette to think of something to do later that night…
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
"Oh, where is it?" Joey moaned as he walked through the aisles of the grocery store he went to. He was searching for one of the important ingredients he needed for the dinner he was going to cook. "There it is!" he exclaimed as he grabbed a package of pre-made shortcake shells. He smiled to himself while he put it in the shopping cart and wandered a little more through out the store.
The blonde had been in there for over half an hour trying to gather all of the things he needed for dinner. He checked over his list and was glad that he needed only two more items and then he could head home to begin cooking his special dinner. As he rounded a corner, his cart collided with another. He was about to start yelling at the person when he saw that it was Yugi and another of their friends, Ryou, a long silver haired male with chocolate brown eyes.
"Hey there Yugi, Ryou," Joey replied, smiling at his two friends. "What are you two up to?"
Yugi grinned a little and pointed to the contents of his cart. "I'm having a little party tonight," the petite male answered proudly. "Yami is getting the alcohol since he is already twenty-one. Ryou is here helping me get the snacks and regular sodas. Hey, why don't you bring Tristan? I'm sure that both of you will have a great time."
Ryou nodded and smiled softly. "Please come, Joey. I got that phosphorus and plan on using it the way you told me to. I plan to do it at the party while Bakura is there."
The blonde chuckled and grinned. "So shy Ryou is actually going to go through with a prank that I made famous in high school? I would love to see the face on that boyfriend of yours when it happens. Make sure that you have a camera, okay?" He chuckled some more and then smiled at Yugi. "If I can convince Tristan, I think that that we'll be able to make it to your party, Yugi. What time does it start?"
The tri-color haired young man thought for a moment. "I guess that it'll start around eight tonight. Hey, you better come to the party! Isn't today your one month anniversary with Tristan? We can celebrate that tonight."
"I don't see why not," the honey eyed male pondered. "First, I'm making my specialty for dinner tonight for him. Then we should be able to show up afterwards…It may be late though."
The chocolate orbs of Ryou lit up. "You must really like Tristan if you are going to spend all that time cooking," he commented. "It is what I think it is, right?"
Joey blushed slightly and smirked. "Of course I am, Ryou. It's one of my signature dishes and I just know that he will love it."
"You sure are confident," Yugi teased as he grabbed a bag of potato chips from a nearby shelf. "Then again, you did train under a four star chef while in high school."
"Of course I'm confident…I know that I am just that good," the blonde laughed, his eyes twinkling with amusement at his two friends. "So Yugi…does Ryou know about your little crush?"
Yugi blushed slightly while the silver haired male giggled. "Yeah…but don't let anyone else know! I don't want to lose my friendship with Yami. You, me, Ryou and Yami all grew up together and I don't want to mess that up with him."
Joey nodded in understanding. "I can understand that, Yugi. Anyway, I got everything that I need for dinner and I need to start cooking. Hopefully, I'll see you later tonight." He waved at his two friends as he pushed his shopping cart towards the checkout lanes.
The blonde watched the cashier ring up his groceries and bit his bottom lip. He really hoped that Tristan will like the dinner…and hopefully appreciate the fact that he spent a lot of money on it as well. As soon as the cashier was finished, he handed her the money for his purchases and took his groceries to his beat up car. He finally was able to fix his piece of shit vehicle but he wished that he was able to drive something a little more reliable than that metal tank.
"Oh well," he remarked to himself as he started his car, listening to the knocking sounds the engine was making. "I really hope that Kaiba isn't there when I get home…I don't want to deal with that bastard right now…"
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Luck was with Joey that moment. Seto wasn't at the apartment when he got home so he immediately went to the kitchen with his groceries. He started cooking a soup that was lobster-based and cut up some vegetables. There were various pots and pans on the stove as he made the various dishes and courses for the dinner. As soon as he had most of the food on simmer to cook for a while, he went into the dining room.
The blonde set up the table with candles and arranged it perfectly with a floral centerpiece and the good silverware and plates. He looked at his handiwork and was pleased with what he had done. The oven timer went off and he rushed into the kitchen to take out the two lobsters he had baking with a cream sauce and red vegetables. He tasted it for a moment and nodded absently, noting the excellent flavor and the pink tinge to the sauce [1].
Leaving it in the over for a little while longer, Joey went to the bathroom and took a quick shower and then went into his bedroom to dry off. He looked at the clothes that he set out before he left for the store. He shrugged his shoulders and began dressing. Over his black boxers, he pulled on a pair of black slacks and silk shirt that was a deep purple color. It was one of his few monetary splurges and he intended on impressing his boyfriend that night. He then pulled out a pair of black leather boots that Yugi had given him on his twentieth birthday.
Satisfied with his appearance, the blonde went back to the kitchen and got everything ready. He put together a simple salad with romaine lettuce and tomatoes tossed in a red wine vinaigrette. In the soup bowls on the table, he ladled a creamy soup that had extra cream in it and set it aside. He then took the lobsters out from the oven and dished them on the two plates on the table and arranged it to look artistic.
Just as Joey was about to put some whipped cream on the strawberry shortcake he made, the phone began ringing. He wiped his hands on a towel and then went to go answer the phone. "Hello, Joey speaking," he replied.
On the other end of the line, the blonde heard the voice of Tristan. "Hey there, Joey." He noticed that his boyfriend's voice sounded a little strange.
"Tristan! I'm so glad to hear your voice! When are you coming over?"
"About that…I'm not coming. Something…uh…came up."
Joey stood still, his hand clutching the phone so tight his knuckles were becoming white. "What…came up? Is it something more important than our one month anniversary?"
He heard a shuffling on the other end and bit his bottom lip. It almost sounded like another person was there. His heart felt like it was becoming tight as if it was in a vise. The blonde hoped that there wasn't another person involved, but his rationality was telling him otherwise.
"Okay, I guess I'll just have to tell you straight out, Joey. I found someone else and he isn't such a prude in bed as you are. You're a nice guy and all, but I need something more. There just aren't any fireworks between us."
Tears began welling up in Joey's honeyed eyes. "So…you're saying that…we aren't together anymore? I don't understand!"
"I just don't think that us being together is a good thing. Besides, you deserve someone better than me. We just aren't meant to be."
"I…see. Good bye then and have a good life." At that, Joey hung up the phone and walked aimlessly around the apartment, staring at the dinner setup. He had spent so much time and effort in trying to impress his now ex-boyfriend that he felt exhausted, deflated. One thing for sure is that he now needed a drink…badly.
Just as he turned to go sit down on the couch, the front door to the apartment was opened. Seto came inside and looked around, not noticing the melancholy air that was now permeating the living area. The brunette sniffed the air and smelled delicious odors wafting from the dining table and the kitchen, making him wonder what the pup had cooked. However, the thing that he noticed most was the absence of a certain pointy haired man.
"What's this?" Seto asked as he spied the romantic setting at the dining room table. He then glanced over at the blonde. "The dinner for two I see…but I don't see your boyfriend here. What happened, did he find another bone to chew?"
Joey stood up and looked at the CEO. His honey brown eyes were bright with unshed tears and there were streaks on his face where tears had already fallen. "In a manner of speaking, yes he did," he answered softly as he got up from his chair and grabbed his jean jacket and put it on. "Look, you can eat the dinner if you haven't eaten yet. I'm going over to Yugi's to get stone-cold drunk. Go ahead and make as much fun of this pathetic dog that I am…I don't care anymore."
Seto was taken aback. Most of the time, the pup would get angry right back at him and come back with some clever insults. Their witty repartee had become commonplace between the two that he actually missed it.
"I'm…sorry," he replied lamely, wincing at the tone in his voice. He then glanced at the prepared food on the table. "Since I know that you did not poison this food, I think that I shall partake in the dinner. ONLY if you dine with me, pup."
The blonde shook his head sadly. "No. I don't want to be here right now. Like I said, I'm going over to Yugi's. He's having a party and I already told him that I will try and make it there."
The CEO sighed. "At least you can tell me what you cooked. I don't want to have to try and figure it out and have my tongue fall out."
"Fuck you, Kaiba," Joey spat out and then calmed down a bit. "I made Lobster Thermadore, Lobster Bisque for the soup, and a simple tossed salad in a red wine vinaigrette [2]. I got a bottle of Chablis chilling in the fridge and the strawberry shortcake in there as well. Enjoy it because I sure as hell won't." At that, he grabbed his car keys and stormed out of the apartment.
Seto stared at the space the blonde was just in mere moments before. He just knew Tristan was bad news, but could never tell that to his roommate. He then glanced at the dinner setting and sighed. He knew from previous experience that the pup was an excellent cook. However, he wanted to eat this meal with Joey. He just can't explain the reason why, although Mokuba would have had a few reasons of his own.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Joey drove swiftly through the streets of Domino, trying to get Tristan out of his mind. He had opened his mind and heart to the other male because he thought that they were similar enough to each other. With his now ex-boyfriend dumping him on their anniversary, he felt as if his heart was ripped out of his chest and was stomped on repeatedly. The last time he felt this way was back in high school and he thought that he would never feel like that again. He hated it!
It only took him a few minutes to reach Yugi's place and parked his car. The sounds of music and laughter were already being heard and that made him feel worse. He sighed as he got out of the car and went up to the front door, ringing the doorbell. It didn't take too long for someone to answer the door and the blonde felt a slight smile tug at the corners of his mouth. It was Bakura and his face appeared to be black with soot and the ends of his silvery hair were singed.
"What?!" the man remarked, his anger coming through. He then raised an eyebrow at the blonde. "What are you doing here, mutt? Shouldn't you be banging your boy-toy right now?"
Joey growled at Bakura and pushed him aside as he entered the house. "Tristan decided to, put in your `delicate' terms, go and bang someone else. Just tell me where the beer is and I'll leave you alone."
Not paying any more attention to the singed young man, the blonde walked through the hallway and found his friends in the living room. He smiled weakly at the people gathered and sat down on an empty chair with a resounding plop. He ignored the looks that his friends were giving him and sighed.
Yami noticed that his blonde friend had come to the party alone so he grabbed an unopened can of beer and handed it to Joey. "Where's Tristan?" he asked as he watched his friend open the can and down the beer quickly. "I thought that he would be coming with you?"
"I don't want to talk about that bastard," the blonde answered swiftly as he put the now empty can on the floor. "Just give me another beer and keep them coming."
The tri-color haired young man stared at his friend for a moment. "He dumped you, didn't he?"
"What an astute observation, Yami. No wonder you're studying pre-law."
"Joey, if you're upset at Tristan, do not take it out on me!"
Joey sighed as he slumped into the couch. "Sorry Yami. I didn't mean to be that way…I guess my bastard of a roommate rubbed off on me."
Yami shook his head and motioned for Bakura to bring over a case of beer. He grimaced when the silver haired male dropped the case onto the coffee table, causing a loud noise that was heard throughout the house. He flipped Ryou's boyfriend off while the other laughed insanely. He will never know how Ryou and Bakura got together and he was sure that he did not want to know. As long as his friend is happy, then he would be happy as well.
Yugi watched his blonde friend drink two more cans of beer and sighed. Yami would get Joey so drunk that he won't be able to drive home. The petite young man strolled over to his taller look-alike. The two locked gazes for a moment before turning their attention back to the blonde.
"Tristan dumped Joey," Yami whispered in Yugi's ear, causing the shorter to shiver momentarily. "This is the only way that I could think of to get his mind off of the guy."
Yugi nodded slightly and grimaced as Joey just finished half of the case of beer. "I know, Yami. But how will we get him home? All of us won't be sober enough to take him home."
"We'll just have to call Mokuba's brother."
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Seto put the fork down onto the dining room table and sighed. He has had Lobster Thermadore before but it had never tasted so good. The bisque was extremely flavorful and smooth in texture. The simple tossed salad was a nice touch and the Chablis was the perfect compliment to the meal. He would have never thought that the pup would have such excellent taste in food and wine. The blonde just didn't seem to be that type of person, a connoisseur if you will.
The brunette stood up and took all of the dishes he dirtied into the kitchen and into the dishwasher. He looked around the kitchen and was mildly surprised that his roommate had cleaned the area and all of the pans were already washed. He tilted his head to one side and shook his head. He was still astonished that Joey kept to their agreement and was keeping everything clean.
"You are true to your word, pup," the CEO remarked quietly while he went about cleaning up his mess. "And you are an excellent cook…"
When he cleaned everything that he had used, Seto walked over to the couch and sat down slowly. The brunette breathed in slowly as he took in Joey's scent that lingered on the fabric. If the blonde wasn't at work, he would always use the couch to lounge to watch television or do his homework. He closed his eyes and leaned into the couch, trying to remember how the pup was dressed earlier. Those black slacks made Joey seemed even more slender than he already was and the silk shirt looked amazing on his roommate. The deep purple color only enhanced the male's blonde hair, making it appear even more golden.
The tall CEO was becoming even more confused about his feelings towards his annoying roommate. It was now mid-October and he never thought that he would have any sort of emotions towards another person that was not his younger brother. Joey Wheeler was more complex that he had originally thought and was probably not as dumb as the blonde would portray. Of course his physical attributes were quite appealing as well.
`The pup isn't really as annoying anymore,' Seto thought to himself, his eyes still closed as he enjoyed Joey's scent on the couch. `But I can't let him know that…at least not right now. I wonder...' His thoughts were cut off when the telephone began ringing. He growled under his breath as he got up from the couch and went over to the phone.
"What?" the brunette snapped. He didn't want to broken away from his musings.
"I now see why Joey calls you a bastard," a distinctive male voice answered, the tone slightly amused. "You are Seto Kaiba, I assume?"
Cobalt eyes narrowed slightly at the other's voice. To him, it sounded condescending and perhaps a bit arrogant. "Yes, this is he," was the cold reply from the CEO. "Since you know my roommate, you must be an idiot just like him."
Silence. "And since you are Joey's roommate, I'll let that one slide, Kaiba."
Seto chuckled slightly and smirked. It seemed to him that the pup's friends were also just as easy to rile up. Wait a moment. Why was one of the pup's friends calling here?
"Why are you calling? Wheeler isn't here. He said that he was going over to his friend Yugi's place."
The voice on the other end of the line sighed. "I'm calling from Yugi's. Joey isn't sober enough to drive home, Kaiba. He needs a ride home."
"Whoever you are, why don't you drive the pup home?" Seto felt like he was beginning to lose his patience over this strange caller.
"My name is Yami Katagi [3] and I can't drive Joey home. I may sound sober, but I've already had a few drinks. I wouldn't drive in my condition. Well, I could but I don't want to get into an accident or get a ticket."
The CEO snorted for a moment. "Alright then, I'll come and get Wheeler. What's the address?"
Yami gave directions to Yugi's house to Seto and the brunette hung up the phone almost immediately. He swiftly grabbed his car keys and a jacket and left the apartment. For some reason, the thought of his puppy getting drunk over a loser like Tristan made his blood boil. Suddenly, he stopped in his tracks. His puppy? When did he start thinking of the blonde along those lines?
He grumbled to himself once more as he got into his car and took off down the street. The tall young man did not really want to go over and get Wheeler but something compelled him to get his roommate. Yes, he did think that the pup was appealing physically…very appealing; especially in that outfit he was wearing. That was when he started thinking about this conversation he had with Mokuba a couple of days ago…
Flashback…
"And then Wheeler came back from whatever class he had smelling like he had a run in with a skunk!" Seto complained loudly, his cobalt eyes flashing. "Here I thought that wet dogs smelled bad but this was ridiculous."
Mokuba chuckled and gave his older brother a smirk. "You know, Seto, you really talk about Joey a lot."
The CEO gave a pointed look at the ebony haired teen. "Wheeler is a dog and needs to be put into his place. I hate everything about the pup."
"Seto…have you ever heard of this saying? There's a thin line between love and hate."
"And what do you mean by that?"
"If you can't figure it out, big brother, then I don't have anything more to say to you about this."
End Flashback…
Seto gripped the steering wheel tightly as he drove through the streets, his thoughts on the one line Mokuba said to him. `There's a thin line between love and hate.' He's only known Joey for nearly two months and he was sure that a person couldn't develop feelings like that in such a short time. Besides, he never really took the time to get to know how his roommate ticked. Why should he? Joey was beneath him in terms of social status and life in general.
A few minutes later, he pulled up in front of a modest looking house and saw a few cars parked out in front. He recognized Joey's beat up vehicle and sighed. Just looking at the rusting car made the CEO want to turn around and leave, but he did tell that Yami person that he would come and get the blonde. With that in mind, he parked his car and slowly walked up to the front door. He rang the doorbell and waited a couple minutes before knocking on the door harshly.
The door was opened quickly, the wood slamming against the wall. The person who answered had rumpled clothing and his silvery hair was messed up and lightly singed. "What the hell do you want?" the young man snarled, his brown eyes narrowing dangerously. A couple seconds later, the man smirked at Seto. "Why Seto, how nice of you to join us little people here at Yugi's place. Are you here to take the stick out of your ass or just here to make ice look warm?"
"Bakura, I like you," the brunette began after he got over the initial shock of Bakura's insult. "You remind me of myself when I was young and stupid." He smirked and chuckled inwardly as he watched the man fume.
"Nice comeback," Bakura responded, making room for the CEO to enter the house. "Seriously, what are you doing here? You usually don't make appearances at parties beneath your so-called social status."
"Someone called about a stray dog that needed to be picked up."
"Ah, you're talking about Joey. He's in the living room. Follow me because I think that you would get lost in a middle-class home like Yugi's. Then again, at least there is warmth here…not like your mansion."
Seto's forehead furrowed for a moment, not understanding what Bakura meant by that last remark. He shrugged as he followed the silver haired young man into a living room that spoke of family and warmth. It may not be furnished with the most expensive of furniture, but it was obviously well loved. He saw Yugi and Yami over at one side and another male, who looked a lot like Bakura, off to one side talking on the phone. Yugi looked up and waved the brunette over.
"Kaiba, thanks for coming to get Joey," Yugi replied softly when the CEO came over to him. "He's in the bathroom right now praying to the porcelain god."
Seto only nodded, not paying too much attention to the short male. He just kept glancing about the room and raised an eyebrow when Bakura went over to his look-alike on the phone and hung the receiver up. They appeared to get into a slight argument which ended with the both of them kissing like there was no tomorrow. That made the CEO just turn his head so he wouldn't see what he thought was a disgusting display of physical affection. What he saw next was shocking.
Joey had just come out of the bathroom, looking like he was run over by a freight train. His slacks were wrinkled and his blonde hair was a mess. However, the sight of the blonde without his shirt on made the brunette bite his lip. The blonde's skin was lightly tanned and his body was very toned, but not too muscular…it was just the right look that fit.
"Um…sorry Yugi. I threw up all over your bathroom…and I left my shirt there. It's a fucking mess," the blonde apologized, his face showing sadness.
"That's okay, Joey. Anyway, Kaiba is here to take you home. None of us are in any condition to take you home."
Suddenly, Joey's honey brown eyes hardened. "Why did you call him? I coulda taken a cab home!" he exclaimed, his words beginning to slur. "I hate him and he hates me!"
Mokuba's words began ringing through Seto's mind once again with the pup's last statement. `Maybe I don't really hate him,' the CEO thought to himself. He swiftly went over to Joey's side when the blonde stumbled and almost fell down. Yami went over to them and held his blonde friend while Seto took his jacket off and handed it to his roommate.
"You don't want to get cold now, pup," the brunette remarked idly. "It's cold outside and I don't want to have to take you to the vet if you get sick."
Joey rolled his eyes at his roommate and took the jacket and put it on, a glazed look in his honeyed eyes. It was obvious that the blonde was still very drunk. "I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message." At that obscure statement, he slumped forward against the CEO, who had to wrap his arms around the blonde's slender form.
"He just passed out," Yami stated, watching how gently the brunette was holding onto his friend. "Go take Joey home, Kaiba."
Seto only nodded at the shorter male and carefully carried Joey's prone form bridal-style out of Yugi's house and put him in his car. He strapped the other in the passenger seat and then got in on the driver's side. His breathing had become erratic while he was holding his roommate in his arms and was trying to regain some control.
It was official…He was very attracted to his roommate. That damned puppy…

Chapter Six preview:
Joey stretched for a moment as he stood up from the chair next to the pool. He glanced around at all of the people that Mokuba had invited to his costume party. It didn't take him long to find a costume to wear. He thought that being the Big Bad Wolf would be a good choice for him. He wore tight black jeans and boots outfitted with fur to simulate paws. On his head was a set of wolf ears and his face was painted to look like a wolf. He also had a furry wolf tail attached to the back of his black jeans…but he felt depressed. He saw all of these costumed partygoers that obviously had dates and that made him feel worse. Ever since Tristan dumped him, he didn't feel comfortable enough to go out and ask someone for a date or even to dance.
Suddenly, he felt a dark presence nearby and he looked up to see a rather tall young man walk into the patio area. This young man was dressed in the classic vampire costume, complete with a black cape, black top hat, and a black half mask covering the top part of his face. It was a smart ensemble that fit this male's lithe body. The blonde felt his mouth go dry while watching the `vampire' approach him slowly.
"I see that you are all alone," the `vampire' remarked smoothly, his rich voice sending shivers up and down Joey's spine. "Why is the Big Bad Wolf not meeting Little Red Riding Hood?"
"Because this Big Bad Wolf isn't going for girls, or boys, anymore. It's just a waste of my time."
