Chapter 5

“Aishizu and Karim are dead - the embalmers reported that have passed on for days, and you only tell me this now?”
The guard cringed at Akunadin's feet. The new Pharaoh was notoriously bad-tempered, and no idiot would dare ask.
“And what of the Items?” Set broke in.
“They-they were missing, High Priest!”
“Missing. As in stolen?”
The guard nodded hastily. “Both their throats were slit, Highness, and Aishizu's body showed… she had been sullied. All of their jewelry was also taken.”
Akunadin rubbed his forehead. The Eye told him that the man was not lying. He should have paid them more attention.
It was probably the self-proclaimed Thief King Bakura's fault. They had placed the blame for Pharaoh and High Priest Mahaado's deaths on the man's shoulders squarely. He could bear these deaths as well.
“Double the guards around our Palace. We will not lose any more of our loyal Priests to those thieves.”
“Yes, Pharaoh! May you reign for ten thousand years!” The guard backed out of the room hastily, still prostrating himself.
Akunadin stroked the Sennen Puzzle in his hands with an unreadable expression. No one commented.
Set simply smirked in that infuriating way of his.

Shadah was treading on thin ice and he knew it. Only his aptitude to wield the Sennen Ankh had saved his life.
He was not expendable, yet.
Still, he felt sorrow for Karim and Aishizu. They had been loyal friends. Now, he had to watch himself.
If only Mahaado and the Pharaoh - no, such thoughts were treasonous. It was better to let the dead rest in peace, after all.
If Akunadin got wind of his traitorous thoughts, even his Ankh would not save him. Ever since Set had brought that strange, half-dead blue-eyed girl to the Palace, he had been wary.
Her soul contained great power, and now that the Gods were as good as dead…
Who would challenge the Blue Eyes White Dragon?

The Puzzle was the symbol of the Pharaoh. Akunadin was glad his men had been able to wrest it from the late Pharaoh. And after they saw him bleed, they concluded he was as human as the rest of them.
Surely Mahaado and Yami were dead. Even if they had found an oasis, they would have starved to death by now.
He was content. After a year or so, when things had calmed, Set would take the throne he was currently reclining on.
His son was patient. It was a familial trait, after all.
The Sennen Eye glittered as he poured wine and toasted his son. Set simply stroked the wing tips on the Rod as he smiled.
Shadah shivered.

“This is so familiar.” Yami remarked as they passed through the streets. No one spared them a second glance. Their linen was packed, and they were wearing plain cotton robes, pure white, with no dyes of any kind. Peasant wear could hide them for a while.
They had enemies here… they could feel it without words.
Maha felt lightning prickle down her spine and she pushed her Master to the ground as several rocks whizzed overhead.
“Demon!” The man who had thrown the rock screamed. “Demon!”
Yami cursed inwardly. His eyes could get them in such trouble…
More men were advancing, rocks at the ready.
Maha brought her hands up in front of her body, and the Ring appeared. She heard gasps of surprise, but she paid it no mind. The hood was hiding her features, so there would be no guards coming after her. Besides, she would never leave her Master.
Golden light glittered around her as she summoned her monster.

Ever since they had met the dragon, they had been practicing. For if such monsters existed, they would make powerful allies!
Now, she watched in satisfaction as a pitch-black dragon covered in red stones growled and spat out strings of red light.
The men screamed as they were destroyed.
Yami sighed. “You overdid it, but no matter. Let us leave this town.”
They climbed atop the dragon's back and flew off.
Behind them, they could hear shouts, but they did not notice one very vital whisper.
One of the guards who had come running was as pale as death.
“High Priest Mahaado…”

The High Priest was not dead after all, and he'd be damned if the hooded man with the ruby eyes had not been the lost Pharaoh! It made perfect sense!
No bodies had ever been found, though a magnificent funeral had been held for the fallen ones.
He had served under the late Priest, but he had heard rumors… it had been a coup de grace, and the Pharaoh had fallen.
Of course they would have killed High Priest Mahaado. His loyalty to Pharaoh had been unshakeable.
It might even transcend death.
No. Perhaps what he had seen were their spirits… their Ka? Or had he seen their Ba? Was such a thing possible?
And yet, Pharaoh was God…
Surely he could Raise Dead?
Yet… he felt no inclination to tell High Priest - no, Pharaoh Akunadin, of this news. There had been only a brief mourning period, not even the full moon, before he had taken over.
Even a blind bat could tell Akunadin wished the throne for himself and his line…
Djou vowed to keep this secret. He did, however, wonder, when High Priest Mahaado had become so… bloodthirsty, almost.
Perhaps it was stress.
Or perhaps he did not remember his old life? Though farfetched, such was possible…
If he saw them again, he might try to explain…
