Chapter 4

After they had bathed and dressed in clean linen robes, with minimal jewelry -Yami settled for bracelets and Maha followed suit, they looked… almost regal, royal, perhaps a member of the Priesthood, or the Pharaoh's Court…
The merchant, who was named Iahi, was not a greedy man, but he wondered…
The woman would be a rare acquisition. She had excellent physique, was quiet and demure, and from what he had seen, could prove a valuable guard as well. It was a pity she was so devoted to her Master.
However, perhaps if some incident befell him…?

It proved not so easy. Despite the fact that her Master, the Healer, had no other servants, she took capable care of him. She tasted all his food, all the while murmuring apologies. He accepted them with an easy familiarity that spoke of long acquaintance. Interesting.
She would look better if he dressed her better. With gold glittering from her wrists and ankles, forehead and hips and neck… she would be a knockout!
Or perhaps he did know?
Perhaps the Healer had a jealous wife somewhere… yes, he most likely did. And he should not show too much interest in a mere servant girl.
There must be a reason why he had not named her his concubine.
The man yawned. It was too soon after his illness to puzzle out these mysteries… he was still tired, though he felt immensely healthy.
So, the Healer's power was true. He had expected a fraud, but no…
Who was this mysterious Healer, with blood-red eyes and odd, healing magic of the same shade?
He had never heard of such a man. Perhaps he was a foreigner. It was too early to tell. The servant was definitely foreign.
He finished the grapes and waved for a servant to bring a towel for his hands. The servant scurried off to complete his task.
Well, he'd wait and see.

Yami sighed as he lay on the bed. Maha hummed under her breath as she rubbed oil into his sand-roughened skin. It would take a few days for it to smooth out again, but they had time to spare.
The merchant, Iahi, had been courteous enough, but she did not enjoy the feel of his eyes raking over her body. It made her feel exposed.
Yami gave a muffled sigh as he felt stress bleed from his aching limbs. “Maha…”
“Yes, Master Yami?”
“Do you believe it is safe for us here?” He dropped his voice, well aware of prying ears and peering eyes in a house not one's own.
“For the time being, yes.”
“I trust your judgment.” He spoke, and her hands continued their work. Finally, she put the oil away as she slipped into bed with him.
Their lips met and he sighed as he felt her arch beneath him.
Everything would be all right…

Their stay extended for perhaps a month, before they mutually decided it was time to continue on. For several days, Maha had felt an insistent tug in the direction of the capital city, and though they did not wish to go to Court, there were miles and many a month's travel between their current location and the Palace.
Iahi was sorry to see them go, and sorrier still that he had not managed to lure the woman away from the Healer's service. Still, he was well satisfied with his new, strong physique, and bore no hard feelings.
It was a pity the asps hadn't worked… they had been expensive.

The glitter of sun-swept gold caught his eye, and he dismounted - they had purchased two horses, both sturdy but nothing eye-catching, before they had left, along with a few weeks worth of provisions. She followed, frowning slightly as she did so. There were two items fallen there, a necklace inscribed with the eye of Ra, and a pair of black Scales…
And that was when the sand around them exploded and a mythical beast of rough brown burst out of it.
Dragon? Some part of Yami's mind noted, idly, even as Maha summoned her tridents. She crossed them and shouted a command he did not know she had known.
Maha was surprised, but she instinctively knew what to do, and she shouted a command in hieratic - but wasn't hieratic restricted to nobles - before a veil of darkness shimmered around the strange beast.
It was a six-pointed, circular laced sigil of magic.
Magic…
She had magic as well. It did not belong solely to her Healer-Master. She had obviously been trained to protect him, of course.
She concentrated, and shouted another spell. A green light burst from her body in a dazzling wave and slammed the beast into the ground. It struggled to stand weakly, but the fight seemed to have gone out of it.
And then it spoke.

“Keep the Items safe. I trust you…”
The beast gave a shudder and lay still.
She stared at Yami. He stared back.
… The beast had spoken? What manner of sorcery was this!

That monster was familiar, and at the same time, not. It did not matter. Her Master took the Scales, and handed her the Necklace.
She slipped it around her neck. It felt comfortable, like it belonged, but at the same time, there was a spike of heat behind her eyes. She cried out in surprise and fell to her knees.
Her Master was at her side in a second. “Maha!”
“Master…”
“Are you all right?”
No she wasn't, she felt like her body was splitting open… and then there was a brilliant flash of gold light that left her dazed.
When she came to, she found that Master had healed her injuries, but sitting on her chest was a strange, golden pendant with five spikes…
Some sort of mysterious Ring, perhaps? It matched the necklace, had the same Eye of Ra on it.
The Items… what were they?
Yami had tucked the Scales into his saddlebag, but the Necklace - Tauk, a whisper ghosted - and the Ring…
They were hers. They felt as though they always had been, and always would be. It was an odd feeling of possession she had never felt before.
As they both watched, a single pointer drifted up and pointed in the direction they were heading.
Master shook his head in amazement. “I do not know what is going on, Maha, but we had better keep those hidden.” He shouted a word, and darkness swallowed them. They still rested against her body, but when she looked down, she saw nothing there. Fascinating.
Mage and sorcerer, perhaps he had been a Priest, Yami thought.
This magic, though dark, felt so right.
If only he could remember…
