CHAPTER 3

Inu-Yasha sat impatiently by the god tree, he was tempted to jump in the rickety well and retrieve Kagome...
But he knew he would only upset her, and he really didn't like doing that. It either ended him with a sore back or her agreeing, broken hearted, to his biting insults.
That was the reason she went back in the first place.

He hadn't meant to but he had made her cry, he had been scared, he almost lost her...and so as usual he lashed out.

Finally he couldn't take it! The rotting wood of the bone eaters well was taunting him telling him he was brooding, scared of a young human girl.
As he leaped into the well a feeling of dread washed over him.

~
He grinned, having felt the familiar aura of the well being activated.
Souta was happy, he really had missed his sister.
He remembered when he thought he had Houshi blood, everyone had thought he was just imagining. Jii-chan had even stated “Kagome has all the holy powers of our blood line, well except me.”

But Kagome had believed him, she even checked his aura confirming such.

Though he had only a quarter of what Kagome had, he still felt proud, he could still give Inu Nii-san 3rd degree burns, wounding the hanyou.
And Kagome said with practice he could train his powers and maybe even, if the well let him, go back to the feudal era with her.

He was pulled out of his train of thoughts when he heard the well house door open.

His sights fell on to the red wearing hanyou stepping out of the well house.

~
Inu-Yasha saw Souta grinning as he walked over, he smirked, man had the kid grown, his once small for his age body had grown.
He looked mature, he was the same exact age as Kagome when she fell down the well.

“Hey Nii-san.” Souta waved.

“Hey kid, where is Kagome?” He asked scanning the shrine expecting to see her come marching out the door with a red face, or languidly coming up the shrine steps.

“She isn't here...” Souta looked confused and worried.
Inu-Yasha snorted.
“Not funny kid...what did she pay you to say that?” He asked becoming impatient, again.

“No, she has been gone for a week...” Souta was becoming more frantic.
Inu-Yasha realized that Souta was telling the truth.
As Souta's emotions became more frantic and wild, so did his powers.
Inu-Yasha backed off fearing he would get a nasty burn.

“Souta calm down...We will find her, I'm dog demon remember?” Souta became less frantic.
What Inu-Yasha failed to tell him was that with the snow and the fact her scent was a weak old, he would be useless.

Though he was surprised when he found a scent, it was much like after he used wind scar, except it was more faded, and it was different, similar like when he traveled through the well.
He followed the scent, finding himself a few steps in front of her house.
`What the hell?' Some one had ambushed her and made a portal, the scent was distinct, as was her fear.
Though the fact he could smell it pointed to either they wanted him to find it, or the emotions and smells were strong enough for even Souta to smell them when it happened...

He was betting on door number one.

~
Genkai gazed over her five (six if you are counting Youko) guests.
“Well what can I do?” Her dry, sharp voice asked.

“Keep everyone who would be a liability to us safe, we will make up excuses as to why they are staying at your shrine-” Kurama was cut off.
“No need, I will come up with them, but you must give me all the details.”

Koenma handed her the note, it gave all information.
Quickly reading it she nodded in understanding.

“Will Botan be in this?” She asked.
All stiffened, they hadn't thought about the stubborn ferry girl, surely she would want to be apart and help in some way, but they couldn't allow that.
“No, you must keep her here she will fight but we can't let her, even if she is on the borders, she will be come a weapon against us if we do not keep her away, Even Kuwabara is bordering on being a handicap, no offense” Koenma stated.
“None taken.” Kuwabara gave a response that showed how much he had grown.

“We cannot take gambles, it is too risky.”
The sound of a shoji door opening alerted them all to a new presence.
What they saw pulled at their heart strings, even Hiei's.

Yukina had tears running down her face, turning into the beautiful tear gems and clinking to the floor.
Kuwabara didn't act as he used to and run to Yukina proclaiming he would protect her, he knew it would be a lie.
Though he did stand up and walk quietly over to her.
He collected the fallen tear gem and placed them in her hand.
“I will talk to her.”
Kuwabara stated, and no one disagreed still in shock over his blatant show of maturity.

Koenma was the first to break out of his trance.
He turned his attention to Genkai, “We can't let anyone get involved when there is no need.”
He said drawing everyone's attention back to the topic.
Yusuke sighed, wondering how Kuwabara was comforting the ice koorime who had become like family to him.

~
Kuwabara lead Yukina to a bench near the a cluster of trees.
He looked at the woman whom had unknowingly captured his heart, she was looking any where but at him, trying to hide her tears.
His heart twisted, it hurt that she was avoiding his gaze

“Your hair has grown, it looks nice in a braid.”
He stated mentally hitting his head against a brick wall for the lame way to distract her.
She turned to him her eyes spilling over with tears.
“Why are you doing this? All of you? Putting your necks on the chopping blocks intentionally? Why are you going out into the face of danger and throwing your lives into peril?” She sobbed.
His heart felt like an invisible hand was squeezing it with an iron grasp.
He realized she had long ago realized that they wouldn't always make it out alive, and it hurt, and it hurt him that he couldn't tell her they were all going to be fine. He would defeat the enemy and come home to her as her brave night whom had slew the dragon, no, he knew better now.
It hurt to admit it.

“Yukina...I really want to say that all of this will be fine, that I will return your knight in shining armor, but I can't...I would be lying to you if I did. and seeing you crying, it hurts me, and it kills me that there is nothing I can do...Yukina there aren't many times when I will admit I am scared, but right now I am terrified.”
Yukina looked at him as if she was finally realizing something.

“I am terrified that when I go out there and to fight, that I won't return, that I won't be to let you know, I love you.
I know I have said it many times before, but each time I didn't take it seriously, and everyone thought it was stupid, which I will admit it was, I wouldn't have even taken it to heart if I heard it.
And I know I am not as intelligent or good looking as Kurama, but I really do love you, and I don't want to see you cry anymore.”

Yukina was speechless. She had always just thought Kuwabara was acting funny, never had she thought the goofy ningen held such feelings for her. She was brought out of her thought when she heard his bitter chuckle.

“Ya know, when I first saw the video of you in Tarukane's stronghold, I thought I had been in love. But I soon realized it was a crush, but the more I got to know you, the more I actually did fall in love.
You are strong willed and stubborn yet you are sweet and caring.
You will protect those close to you even if your life will postpone their death. You are truly beautiful at heart.”

Again Yukina was left without a word. Kuwabara stood and dropped the last of the tears into her hand closing her fingers around it.
“Even in death I will carry feelings for you.”
He began heading towards where the meeting was held.

Once out of sight Yukina opened her hand and looked at the stone, she was shocked to see that it was no longer a pale blue, but a bright yellowish-orange, the same color as Kuwabara's energy, it sparked with the energy he had pushed into it.

She gave a small watery smile, so that was what he meant.
