“You called for me?” Sensui languidly asked as he joined Naraku while sliding the door shut behind him.
“Tell me something Sensui,” Naraku said in a deadly calm voice as viewed the world within Kana's mirror. “What part of `Make-sure-no-one-follows-you' did you not comprehend?” Turning to glance at Sensui, Naraku smirked at the look of vexation on the young man's face. In his kneeling position, he gestured a hand towards the mirror lying before him and closed his eyes as heard the creaking of floorboards coming closer before coming to a halt.
A few seconds later the room echoed with a single swear word emitting from Sensui.
“I take it you are as bewildered as I am to how these imbeciles came to be here,” Naraku said in a statement kind of tone than a questioning one. The suddenly, he was stirred from his trance like state as he opened eyes to the sight of Sensui chuckling. “I'm afraid I don't understand your sudden amusement of the situation at hand.”
“Situation?” Sensui said in an amused tone. “Hardly. In fact, I would say this little `situation' could work to our advantage. I digress. I'm certain you wish an elaboration on my abrupt behavior.” Turning his head up to Naraku, he met disinterested red eyes peering back at him. Upon no response, he continued. “All though I find the fact that Yusuke and his friends sudden appearance confusing and even more so annoying, I find this little turn of events-well- quite intriguing.”
With a growl of impatience Naraku spat, “Get to the point!”
“Gladly,” Sensui smiled as he flashed a hand across the mirror allowing another scene to take place. Naraku calculated the depiction of Inuyasha and Yusuke fighting it out with another while an orange haired boy speculated from the sidelines.
“Are you suggesting that this human is the one you've been searching for? I must admit Sensui you surprise me,” Naraku frowned as Kuwabara's face came into full focus. “Surely some one of your caliber could easily abduct this odd-looking boy with very little deterrence.”
“Don't miss understand me, Naraku,” Sensui said with a slight hint of annoyance that his abilities were being questioned. “Unlike him, I considered his companions to be quite the adversaries. My most valued men have been eliminated due to his allies' talents. However, there is little to fret about. I have all ready formulated a plan to subdue the boy by drawing him out into isolation.”
As if on cue, a raven-haired youth emerged from the dark confines of the room while passing a gold coin between his knuckles.
“You see, unlike my other men, you will find Sniper to be more than competent,” Sensui said as Naraku gave the boy a shrewd glance over before voicing his thoughts.
“I take it you have been briefed on what's expected of you?” Naraku inquired. The boy merely continued to fiddle with the coin as Naraku pressed on. “Also that failure is not tolerated or optional? Understand this; if you are to fail yo-”
“Take it easy before you get your fur all ruffled up,” Sniper smirked as Naraku growled at his impudence. “I've done more than my fair share of sting operations and if that doesn't reassure you than allow me to establish my view on the issue.” With a casual flick of the wrist, he deliberately sent the coin flying right over the top of Naraku's head and with a thud pierced the wall behind him.
“In my field of expertise,” Sniper smirked coyly as he finished with a curt reply, “failure has never been a concern of mine.”
**********
Kurama swiped the sweat forming on his brow and with an irritated sigh lashed at another branch blocking his way. Finally, he came to a clearing and noted the rubble and piles of ash littering the ground. `Definitely Hiei's handy work,' Kurama thought with a small sweat drop forming. Hiei was known to over do his missions at times and this was no exception. Still this did not deter Kurama for long as he marched forward.
“Kagome! Slow down would ya?!” A young voice shrilly called out causing the kitsune to panic. Frantically searching for a hiding place, Kurama crept towards one of the remaining slabs of walls still standing and kneeled to conceal his himself. Kurama's eyebrows scrunched together in confusion as he recognized Kagome's spirit energy, but the other two didn't register.
Appearing from the flora, emerged a young monk, Kagome pushing her bike a head of her and a small kitsune glued to her shoulder. The young monk suddenly stopped as he looked around with a confused glare on his face.
“What's the matter, Miroku?” Kagome asked as she joined him on his right.
“I could've sworn I sensed the presence of a youkai right here in this clearing,” Mirkou replied with a befuddled tone as he tenderly rubbed the side of his face. A faint handprint was beginning to fade, but the memory lingered.
Sango and Miroku came across an elderly gentleman and his granddaughter who survived the attack on their village. So of course being the lecherous monk he was, Mirkou merely asked the beautiful woman to bear his children if in the event he should perish in his quest. Thus, it resulted a jealous Sango who slapped him across the face, telling him he was worthless, two-bit monk, leaving him behind as she jumped on Kirara's back with the girl and her grandfather holding on for dear life as Kirara carried them to safety. Fortunately, for Miroku, Kagome and Shippo arrived on the scene and with enough decency didn't question the handprint on his face. Besides, the print spoke volumes on its own.
“Well it looks like they're gone now,” Kagome said to help assess the predicament and bringing Miroku from his reverie.
“I don't think so,” the small kitsune piped up while jumping down from his perch on Kagome's shoulder. His nose began to twitch as he sniffed around the area. “I can smell something. It's faint, but its there all right!”
“Are you certain, Shippo?” Miroku asked as he glanced over at Kagome who merely shrugged in response.
“Of course I'm certain! My nose has never steered me wrong before,” Shippo stated matter-of-factly, but faltered as he added, “but something's strange about it though.”
“What is it, Shippo?” Kagome egged him on.
“Its just that-well, the smell vaguely reminds me of-of my parents,” Shippo muttered, but audible enough for the others to hear.
“What?! You mean another kitsune demon?” Kagome gaped as she kneeled to Shippo's level.
“Shippo are you certain that everyone in your clan was destroyed?” Miroku asked ( a/n: A kinda morbid question don't ya think?).
“I thought so, but maybe,” Shippo replied as the reminiscing tone began to fade to a hopeful one; jumping around to face Kagome and with an ear to ear smile and big eyes, Shippo than added, “maybe they survived and they came looking for me! I mean let's face it! We are practically legends! Someone's bound to have heard about me.”
Kagome and Miroku shared a meaningful glance and looked back at Shippo who began to search high and low in the denser part of the woods.
“Shippo-” Kagome began, but couldn't bring herself to finish her train of thought. Padding up to Kagome's side, Miroku placed a tender hand on her shoulder. “Miroku…what are the chances of there being any real survivors from Shippo's clan?”
“To be honest, not too good,” Miroku mumbled to her as they watched an excited Shippo bouncing about. “In fact, it's quite the miracle that he even survived himself.”
“I just feel so bad. His hopes are really set on this and-”
“And your afraid how hard Shippo will take it when he finds out the truth?” Miroku finished for Kagome as she lowered her head in acknowledgement. “Don't worry. He'll…bounce back.” Even to Miroku his words seemed hollow, but for Kagome's sake at least, he hoped he cheered up even just a little.
“Get back here you bastard!” Crashing through the clearing, Yusuke pulled off a back flip and than came one steamed hanyou.
“Funny. I thought dogs were naturals when it came to fetch,” Yusuke smirked as called up his Spirit Rifle and meeting Inuyasha head on.
“Urameshi…slow…down would y-AHHH?!” Kuwabara cried as he fumbled out of the foliage only to fall to the ground to escape the spirit attack while covering his head with his hands.
“Grrrr!-WIND SCAR!” Inuyasha bellowed slamming Tetsuiga to the ground. From dirt to branches to Yusuke's spirit attack, everything went flying back at the spirit detective. Even at Kagome and the others.
“Inuyasha! Cool it would ya?!” Kagome called over the windstorm. Yusuke crashed back first into a nearby tree and fell to the ground with a grunt. As the dust ebbed away, all that remained standing was the tree Yusuke was thrust against. `AH!,' Kagome thought as she saw the remains of her bike; the body of the bike was mangled as one wheel spun awkwardly on its side. `H-he completely fried my bike!'
“Now I got you, ya damn pest!” Inuyasha chuckled as stashed the Tetsuiga and strutted towards Yusuke who was scrambling to his feet. Swinging his hand back, Inuyasha cried in fury, “IRON REAPER SO-huh? What the hell?!”
From beneath Inuyasha's feet, roots sprang forward and captured the hanyou by his legs while immersing him slowly into the ground. Gripping his arm in pain, Yusuke stood on his feet with a satisfied smirk on his bruised face.
“Nice one, Kurama,” Yusuke muttered. Kuwabara allowed himself a peek before jumping to his feet and scurrying over to Yusuke's side.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome cried as she retrieved an arrow from her quiver and drew it back for launch.
“Kagome!” Miroku called. “Behind you!”
Before she even got a chance to release the arrow, a botanical arm lashed at Kagome causing her to drop her weapon and fall to the ground. She clutched her hand as it bled profusely.
“I give my sincerest apologies for injuring your friend,” Kurama said as he emerged from his hiding place. Mirkou spun on his heel and took a fighting stance.
“So you're the youkai I sensed from earlier,” Miroku growled as he jutted his staff accusingly at Kurama.
“Really now? I wasn't aware that I was giving my position away,” Kurama replied in an awed tone, but Miroku misinterpreted it for sarcasm. “Be that as it may, I will not release your companion unless you ask him to back down.”
“So that YOUR friend can get in a few cheap hits? Not likely!” Miroku spat as he grabbed a few chakra spells from his inner cloak.
“I would appreciate it if you would not be little my friends integrity as a fighter. Aside from that I'm willing to make a compromise,” Kurama retorted. “If I tell him, Yusuke that is, to back down, will you do the same? Keep in mind you have limited time to make a decision.”
Miroku glanced back at Inuyasha who was waist deep into the ground and watched the boy, Yusuke, going straight for Inuyasha. Biting his lip in agitation, Miroku nodded with a curt reply, “Deal!”
Nodding in acknowledgement, Kurama called out, “Yusuke! Stop your assault immediately!” Yusuke looked over at the red head and gave him a confused look.
“Ah come on! You can't be serious! He's the one who attacked me in the first place,” Yusuke growled as he cracked his knuckles. “Give me one reason why I shouldn't bash this guy's face in. Just one!”
“Because, Yusuke,” Kurama replied without tearing his eyes away from Miroku, “I gave my word that he shall not be harmed.”
Grabbing the back of his head and with a sigh of defeat, Yusuke gave Kurama a petulant glare before slowly backing away. Inuyasha was chest deep by this point and scowling at the human before him wishing nothing more than to tear him limb from limb. With a snap of Kurama's fingers, the roots went limp as if the very life was sucked dry from it. Inuyasha began to claw away at the vegetation and remove himself from the earth.
“Damn it! When I get my hands on that punk I'm gon-ah?” Inuyasha's voice faltered as his left eye began to twitch. Kurama was assisting Kagome with her wound as he gently wrapped it in a piece of cloth.
“I'm sorry for the lack of medical supplies, but this should prevent at least an infection from occurring,” Kurama gently murmured. From his pocket he then produced a purple herb and placed it in her other hand. “This should help numb the pain. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me for causing you harm.”
“N-no its all right,” Kagome blushed faintly as the red head helped her to her feet. “You were protecting your friend and that's completely understandable. Besides if you were truly a bad person, you would've let him have his way with Inuyasha.” Kagome smiled sweetly up at Kurama who returned it with a grin. Then, like a sack of bricks, it finally hit Kagome while Inuyasha fumed in the background.
“WAIT A MINUTE! You-your that boy from the temple!” Kagome shrilly said. “You and your friends thought my shrine was some kind of-of-”
“Fighting arena?” Yusuke finished bitterly while Kuwabara glowered behind him. “Don't remind me!”
“But how-why…?” Kagome couldn't form the words swirling within her head as she desperately tried to comprehend the situation.
With a chuckle, Kurama replied, “How is simple; we followed you. And as for the why….” Kurama's voice swiftly turned from amusement to seriousness.
“Hey! Has anybody seen the demon ye- Whoa what happened here?” Shippo asked as he appeared from the thicket of trees while taking in his `new' surroundings in awe. After a solid two minutes of silence, Kuwabara perked up as he began to whip his head about.
“What's wrong with you, Kuwabara? Got a nervous twitch or something?” Yusuke smirked
“No!” Kuwabara grumbled as he sharply turned to glare at Yusuke. “I was just wondering-has anyone seen the ankle biter?”
“Hiei? I haven't seen him for over an hour I think,” Yusuke replied as he rubbed his hand over his chin.
“Come to think of it has anyone seen Sango?” Inuyasha suddenly asked. Kagome shrugged her shoulders as if to say `Don't-look-at-me'. Suddenly, the anxiety intensified in the air as the band of humans and demons pondered their lost companions' whereabouts.
“I suggest we leave the explanations for later and search for our friends now,” Kurama replied. He walked towards to Inuyasha while saying, “Let us combine our groups. Truce?”
Inuyasha glared at the proffered hand and with huffed, “Fine!” he walked past Kurama and kneeled down to let Kagome jump on his back. Once he was sure she was secure enough, Inuyasha bounded off at top speed.
“Ready or not here we come!” Yusuke muttered to himself as he followed the demon in hot pursuit with Kuwabara close at his heels. This left the monk with the kitsune demon as Shippo looked back and forth at the two boys.
“I take it your not completely sure of this sudden truce…Miroku was it?” Kurama asked as he quirked an eyebrow at the ill-tempered glare he received from the monk.
“We shall see if you keep true to your word youkai,” Miroku replied as walked he away staff clinking as he went.
Kurama followed his retreating back until Shippo spoke up, “You-you were the youkai we sensed earlier?” Looking down at the ground, Kurama was greeted by the biggest, blue eyes he'd ever seen. Kurama nodded his head and watched the little kitsune's mouth droop into a frown. Shippo suddenly found the ground very interesting as he muttered a pathetic “Oh!” of acknowledgement before scurrying off to catch up with Miroku and jump on to his shoulder. Kurama was dumbfounded towards the young one's reaction, but dismissed it as he followed the monk as well.
“Shippo?” Miroku suddenly questioned who was startled at the sight of small crystal like pools of tears forming in Shippo's eyes. He looked back at Kurama when it dawned on him as looked back at the little one with sympathy. `Poor Shippo,' Miroku thought as reached out a hand and patted the kitsune gently on the head. With a sigh, Miroku sprang into a sprint as he was determined to catch up with the others and so that the older kitsune would not see the younger one sniffle back a cry.
(A/N: Well I know it's been ages but here it is! Tell me what you think and thank you for being patient -er- or patient enough!)
