Chapter 4 Once Upon A Time pt1
“See you later guys.”
Botan waved and disappeared back through the portal once more. The Spirit Detectives found them selves in a rather dense forest.
“This way.”
Hiei sped of in a northly direction with the others following behind quickly. As they got further on an aura was getting stronger and stronger as they approached. A small blue barrier in a shape of dome was covering a small building, it looked fairly run down too from what they could tell as they got close to it. Kurama bent down and picked up a small stone and casual cast it at the barrier, it passed through not even disturbing it.
“Now what.” came from Yusuke who was wondering if it was safe to touch.
“Kuwabara you touch it first, you are human and as it is made from energy similar to yours I don’t think it will harm you.”
“Sure Kurama but if it hurts me, I will haunt you.”
Kuwabara raised one of his hands and touched the barrier, to his surprise his hand went through but it was giving him a strange feeling.
“It’s like putting my hand in warm water.”
“Anything else.”
“Yeah it doesn’t feel like its going to hurt me either, it’s as if it’s inviting me in.”
Suddenly as if he had been pulled, Kuwabara lurched through the barrier and went crashing down on to the ground inside the barrier.
“Kuwabara..!”
Yusuke shouted and went to run to him, Kurama grabbed him in time though.
“No Yusuke, we do not know if it will hurt us yet.”
“Hn.”
Hiei looked at the barrier checking it out with his Jagan, he too sensed no unfriendliness behind the barrier either and with that he made a choice.
“Hiei!”
Kurama and Yusuke watched in shock as Hiei arrogantly strode through the barrier, both then looked at each other shrugged and followed.
Kuwabara was now up and looking at the small shrine with the rest of them, the entrance was small with a door hanging of its hinges, several windows were boarded up. It was obvious no one had been here for a long time, as the team walked in the shrine evidence of animals living here where all over along with dust and cobwebs.
“Erghh what have I stepped in.”
“A dead kitten I believe.”
“What!”
“Hiei.”
Kurama scolded him and then went to calm down the upset Kuwabara.
“Its okay it’s just a rabbit, it’s been dead for long time.”
“Oh poor bunny!”

*’Leave him Kurama, you know he won’t change especially as long as the baka keeps sniffing around Yukina.*
Kurama cautiously looked around at what was obviously the only room, thankfully as the building had deteriorated over the years several holes especially a large one in a corner of the roof let in a great deal of light. Kurama looked around in interest which quickly turned to disappointment which Yusuke eloquently agreed with.
“That stupid toddler sent us on mistake, there is nothing here.”
“Hnn”
Kuwabara who was now near the middle of the room bent down as he saw something which caught his eye, placed on a small brick was a small closed black wooden box with a small gold clasp on it, it looked like one of his sister’s jewellery boxes, he felt nothing coming from it so he picked it up.
“Hey look what I found.”
The others got closer as Kuwabara held up the box for the others to see.
“It’s even got some writing on it too, its pretty I might give it to my love Yukina as a courting gift.”
Hiei’s eyes blazed at this, ‘One of these days I am going to kill that baka.’
Kurama looked at the box with great curiosity, Youko too was curious *’I wanna see too.’*
Youko looked through Kurama eyes and flinched and then barked out.
*’Tell Kuwabara to put that box down know Kurama.”*
“Kuwabara put it down now.”
“Why I can’t sense anything dangerous from it.”
*‘Baka, baka…’*, Youko was shouting of in his head.
“Now Kuwabara.”
“Do as he says.” Yusuke shouted at Kuwabara tensing up sensing from Kurama the box means trouble.
**’ What is it?’**
#‘Youko tells me that those four scripts are from an ancient dialect at least over 2 thousand years old, it makes both of us wary.’#
**’What do they mean?’**
“Hey if do you have something to tell us Kurama, because this baka won’t let go of the box.”
Yusuke was getting pissed off with Kuwabara’s stubbornness that was determinedly refusing to let go of it.
“Youko thinks the box could have a spell on it, those four Kanji’s mean something in an old language that’s even older than Youko.”
“Really. Oh I’d better let go than eh.”
Yusuke rolled his eyes at this statement whilst Kuwabara bent down and placed the box back down on the brick.
“See nothings happened, there isn’t any thing to worry about it, and it’s harmless.”
Just as Kuwabara walked away from the box a loud click was heard and then a small hiss from the box, the lid very slowly started to open and a white mist came drifting out.
“What the …”
“Every one out of here now.”
Kurama snapped out as he started to run quickly outside, Hiei reaching the barrier first and went to dash through when suddenly he slammed against it and then bounced back a few feet, Yusuke and Kurama did the same as Hiei but Kuwabara in his haste didn’t see their obvious dilemma as he went through the barrier not even hindered in the slightest by it only stopping when Yusuke shouted out.
“Hey Kuwabara wait.”
Kuwabara quickly stopped and turned to see the other three behind the barrier.
“Hey why have you stopped for?”
“It won’t let us back through baka.”
“Shut up runt I was only asking.”
“Please argue later, this isn’t the time for it.”
Kurama looked back to the shrine, the white mist was now coming out through the door, it was covering the ground rapidly, it was about 3 inches thick from the ground, Yusuke aimed and shot his spirit gun at the barrier it had no effect neither did Hiei attacking it with the Jagan, he couldn’t find any weakness, it just absorbed their attacks.
“Spirit sword.” Kuwabara shouted and then he too hit the barrier with sword he‘d just created, still nothing happened.
“Hiei, Yusuke!”
Kurama shouted for their attention, they both turned to find the white mist had finally reached them. It covered their feet and then went passed them towards the barrier.
“Nothings happening, shit I thought it was going do something.” Yusuke said in relief as he watched the mist go past them. It reached the barrier and stopped.
“Look it can’t pass through the barrier same as us but how comes Kuwabara could.”
Kurama was quickly assessing the situation along with Youko.
#‘So what do you think.’#
*’That barrier is obviously set up to trap demons and Kuwabara being human can pass back through.’*
#‘That doesn’t explain about the mist though it hasn’t hurt us yet, so what is the point, there isn’t even a scent coming from it, maybe a poison but I have felt no effects yet neither have the others.’#
**’The mist seems harmless but I still do not trust it.’**

Yusuke was getting rather pissed off, the barrier wasn’t weakening and he was trapped inside the damn thing, ’How the hell do I get out of this, Koenma is soo dead when I do.’, then he noticed something.
“Hey guys is it just me but isn’t the mist getting higher!”
Kurama and Hiei snapped their gaze down; the mist was now gaining height, up to their knees by now, though for Hiei passing his thighs, as he was the smallest of the group at just under 5 foot.
Kuwabara was watching from the outside as the mist started filling up the dome, it was like watching one of those egg timers where the sand starts filling up from the bottom when you turn it. The Spirit Detectives again started attacking the dome to try and find a weakness but it held solidly, Kuwabara watched the spirit detectives struggle to get through the barrier until finally he couldn’t see them no more, ‘Kami I hope they are okay’.
Just then the mist turned red and then the barrier started rippling, then from the top of the domed barrier it started to disintegrate working itself downwards along with mist, all existence of it disappearing. Kuwabara held his breathe wondering if the Spirit Detectives would also disappear too. Taking a deep breathe preparing for the worst outcome when the barrier was finally gone, he found that the other three were lying on the ground.
Quickly he ran other to them, and then first with Yusuke he checked for his pulse, he was alive but unconscious, the other two in the same condition when he checked them. He breathed easier for a moment and then grabbed his communicator to call Botan, maybe the ferry girl could help.
As he did so, Kuwabara shivered as a familiar feeling went over him, ‘ What the heck he only got that when he felt other spirits (ghosts) where near by.’, Whatever the feeling was, it was coming from the hut, whilst trying to get through to Botan, he got up from his kneeling position and started walking back to the shrine.
“Hi Botan here, are you guys already finished.”
Botan’s cheerful face appeared on the communicator.
“Botan you need to get here quickly, the guys are unconscious and … what the fuck?”
The communicator was dropped out of his hand whilst Kuwabara with Botan’s voice shouting out.
“Kuwabara what’s the matter, Kuwabara …Kuwabara?”
To his shock four figures materialised through the wall of the building and headed straight towards him.
“Yusuke.” A strangled voice erupted from Kuwabara as he stared in shock, not only that he saw the other three were Kurama, Hiei and also not least of all Youko.
Kuwabara went to touch Yusuke who was the closest with his hand and to his shock a small electric charge came out from Yusuke’s body and hit him, strangely the charge felt really cold as he jerked his hand away.
“Kuwabara you dimwit, that felt awful.”
“Ooops, I’m sorry it was just a surprise, what happened and why are you spirits now.”
“I would like to know that too.”
A light and cheery voice came from behind them; it was Botan who eyes widened in shock as she took in the recent events.
10 minutes later found Kuwabara and Botan with the four spirits back inside the shrine, surrounding the box once more.
“Oh my so this is what caused the incident.”
As she bent down closer to examine but deliberately not touching it. Thoughtfully Botan looked at it, ‘Where have I seen you before.’
(A few minutes before)
Whilst watching, Kurama was thinking back to what had just happened, he remembered the thick mist covering him and the others and then blackness as he was made unconscious. As he come aware once more his mind seemed curiously blank as if something important was missing.
#‘Youko.’# There was no answer, had Youko been made unconscious too. He tried again, #‘Youko are you ok?’#.
Nothing answered him, he was getting worried now.
“Hey red wake up.” It was Youko’s voice but something was different about it.
“Come on open your eyes, I have a surprise for you.”
Kurama opened his eyes, first thing he noticed was he was back in the shrine, the second well it seemed he was floating at least 3 foot of the ground as he turned his head he saw Hiei awake and Youko with an amused grin looking at him and Yusuke still unconscious beside his. His eyes went back to Youko in shock when he realised what he saw.
“What…”
Yusuke shouted as he to come awake, him too floating of the ground, as he looked around in shock, his eyes widened even more as the sight of Kurama and next to him Youko. As for Hiei he was sitting cross-legged slightly hovering from the floor with scowl on his face. Yusuke felt strange and a sense of de ja vu came over him, the last time he had been floating in the air like this was when he died for the first time and he had met Botan the ferry girl.
“What happened, are we dead?”
“No Detective I don’t think so.” Youko said as he stared curiously around the room, he saw the box now lying open on the floor empty with its lid open, testing his now free body though he believed it wasn’t a solid one, he floated over to the box and went to touch it, his hand passed right through it, well that proved his theory then.
“What the fuck is going on.”
Yusuke was getting angrier and angrier, as for Kurama he was watching Youko with an interested gaze, it felt strange to him to see Youko outside of his body and not inside his mind talking to him.
“Shut up baka.” Hiei was pissed of too, for some reason he couldn’t feel the link to his Jagan and it was annoying him intensely.
“I think that this little box has taken our souls out of our bodies.” Youko turned back to the others
“Let’s go outside and check hmm.”
One by one the Spirit Detectives managed to control their bodies and flew outside, it was weird just passing through the stone walls of the shrine as they did so, but they shook this feeling of and went to their last destination before they blacked out. Kuwabara was walking towards them with the communicator in his hand talking to it and then his face paled as he saw them.
“Botan you need to get here quickly that guys are unconscious and … what the fuck?”
After they explained to Botan what had happened and saw to their relief that there bodies though still on the ground but were still alive, they all went back inside the shrine so Botan could see the box.
After a few moments of thinking, Botan picked the box up.
“I’m going to take this back to Koenma and see if we have any information on it, you lot better stay here especially you Kuwabara to keep an eyes on their bodies, I’ll be back as quick as I can.”, and with that Botan disappeared back out through the portal.
“So what shall we do now?”
“Oh man they are going to be so angry.”
Botan wincing thinking of what the men’s reactions will be when she gives them her answers.
“It will be fine Botan, once you tell Kuwabara what he has to do then they will be back in their bodies in an instant. Though I am worried about Youko will he go back too I wonder and at least Yusuke should be fine he has gone through this before?”
Koenma blanking all other thoughts, glad that Botan was to tell his Spirit Detectives how the spell was to be broken and not him; he could imagine Yusuke’s anger already.
“Yes but there is a comparable difference this time though sir.”
“Just hurry up and go Botan, they only have so much time.”
“Yes sir.”
The Spirit detectives had also found now that they weren’t in their bodies no longer, that none of their powers worked either in their spiritual bodies either. Hiei’s Jagan was missing from his forehead and his tattoo of the dragon gone from his arm too, Yusuke’s spirit power other than being able to detect auras were of no use and he couldn’t transform into his demon form as for Youko and Kurama nothing they tried worked either which was frustrating for the group especially if they were attacked at such a vulnerable moment all they had was Kuwabara for protection which wasn‘t very comforting thought.
As they waited patiently Botan finally appeared, her expression didn’t look promising actually she looked scared.
“So have you got some answers?”
“Yes Hiei I have and we even know how to get you back into your bodies too.”
“Well then hurry up, I want to get back in my body.” Yusuke had a strange feeling though whatever Botan was going to say would be bad.
“Well from what the information we have collected on the box is … erm this. The boxes of this type were used a long time ago by a clan of demon hunters who wanted to catch demons and use their abilities for their own use. So after they’d some how enticed the demon within the barrier. One of the hunters would touch the box which would be then activated and then within the barrier set up, the demon souls would be separated from their body. The hunters would then collect the soulless body and then take it, leaving the soul to wander for all eternity, or until one of us from spirit world picked him up. As for the bodies collected using a special technique that they had mastered they would temporally transfer their own soul into the demon whenever their powers was needed. The clan though was destroyed by a large group of demons who decided to collaborate together and annihilate them that was about over 1000 years ago though. All the boxes were meant to have been destroyed, but obviously not.”
Botan took a deep breathe, that was the easy part, now to tell them how they were to be returned back to their bodies.
“Well that explains what happened to us and how, but why? So far no ones turned up to take our bodies.” Kurama was curious to who would set up such a scheme. Though he and the rest had over the years gained a large number of enemies and rivals, none would have set up such an elaborate scheme and not yet take advantage of its results.
“So how do we return?” Youko was still amused slightly though Botan’s talk about the hunters did bring back memories of his own death.
“Well strangely enough Yusuke is familiar with the cure actually, he has had done to him once before though this time there is a difference.”
Yusuke’s ill feelings got even worse and then it hit him.
“Hey Botan is it what I think it is.”
“Oh you have clicked on fast haven’t you?”
“Do you two mind, I would like to return back to my body at least by the end of today.” Hiei’s pissed off voice broke through.
“Well the only way you can be returned back to your body is if some one kisses your soul and then kisses your body.”
“What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” This came from everyone.
“And the catch is well it just can’t be any normal person either it must be someone with large amount of spiritual power or it won’t work.”
“Hey where are we going to get some one with a large amount of spiritual power to kiss us and our bodies, they don’t exactly grow on trees you know.”
Frustration quivering through Yusuke. Botan winced and her face paled as she took a deep breathes.
“Koenma suggests that Kuwabara would have sufficient power to return you.”
“Argggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh.”
“No fucking way.”
“Over my dead body is that baka kissing me.”
“Kami.”
Various replies came from the spirit detectives. As for Kuwabara well his face went pale then red and then a thud sound echoed around the shrine.
“The baka has fainted.”

“Kuwabara what’s the matter, Kuwabara …Kuwabara?”
To his shock four figures materialised through the wall of the building and headed straight towards him.
“Yusuke.” A strangled voice erupted from Kuwabara as he stared in shock, not only that he saw the other three were Kurama, Hiei and also not least of all Youko.
Kuwabara went to touch Yusuke who was the closest with his hand and to his shock a small electric charge came out from Yusuke’s body and hit him, strangely the charge felt really cold as he jerked his hand away.
“Kuwabara you dimwit, that felt awful.”
“Ooops, I’m sorry it was just a surprise, what happened and why are you spirits now.”
“I would like to know that too.”
A light and cheery voice came from behind them; it was Botan who eyes widened in shock as she took in the recent events.
10 minutes later found Kuwabara and Botan with the four spirits back inside the shrine, surrounding the box once more.
“Oh my so this is what caused the incident.”
As she bent down closer to examine but deliberately not touching it. Thoughtfully Botan looked at it, ‘Where have I seen you before.’
(A few minutes before)
Whilst watching, Kurama was thinking back to what had just happened, he remembered the thick mist covering him and the others and then blackness as he was made unconscious. As he come aware once more his mind seemed curiously blank as if something important was missing.
#‘Youko.’# There was no answer, had Youko been made unconscious too. He tried again, #‘Youko are you ok?’#.
Nothing answered him, he was getting worried now.
“Hey red wake up.” It was Youko’s voice but something was different about it.
“Come on open your eyes, I have a surprise for you.”
Kurama opened his eyes, first thing he noticed was he was back in the shrine, the second well it seemed he was floating at least 3 foot of the ground as he turned his head he saw Hiei awake and Youko with an amused grin looking at him and Yusuke still unconscious beside his. His eyes went back to Youko in shock when he realised what he saw.
“What…”
Yusuke shouted as he to come awake, him too floating of the ground, as he looked around in shock, his eyes widened even more as the sight of Kurama and next to him Youko. As for Hiei he was sitting cross-legged slightly hovering from the floor with scowl on his face. Yusuke felt strange and a sense of de ja vu came over him, the last time he had been floating in the air like this was when he died for the first time and he had met Botan the ferry girl.
“What happened, are we dead?”
“No Detective I don’t think so.” Youko said as he stared curiously around the room, he saw the box now lying open on the floor empty with its lid open, testing his now free body though he believed it wasn’t a solid one, he floated over to the box and went to touch it, his hand passed right through it, well that proved his theory then.
“What the fuck is going on.”
Yusuke was getting angrier and angrier, as for Kurama he was watching Youko with an interested gaze, it felt strange to him to see Youko outside of his body and not inside his mind talking to him.
“Shut up baka.” Hiei was pissed of too, for some reason he couldn’t feel the link to his Jagan and it was annoying him intensely.
“I think that this little box has taken our souls out of our bodies.” Youko turned back to the others
“Let’s go outside and check hmm.”
One by one the Spirit Detectives managed to control their bodies and flew outside, it was weird just passing through the stone walls of the shrine as they did so, but they shook this feeling of and went to their last destination before they blacked out. Kuwabara was walking towards them with the communicator in his hand talking to it and then his face paled as he saw them.
“Botan you need to get here quickly that guys are unconscious and … what the fuck?”
After they explained to Botan what had happened and saw to their relief that there bodies though still on the ground but were still alive, they all went back inside the shrine so Botan could see the box.
After a few moments of thinking, Botan picked the box up.
“I’m going to take this back to Koenma and see if we have any information on it, you lot better stay here especially you Kuwabara to keep an eyes on their bodies, I’ll be back as quick as I can.”, and with that Botan disappeared back out through the portal.
“So what shall we do now?”

It had been over an hour since Botan had left the men and so far the information on the box that had been dug up had not reassured her or Koenma.“Oh man they are going to be so angry.”
Botan wincing thinking of what the men’s reactions will be when she gives them her answers.
“It will be fine Botan, once you tell Kuwabara what he has to do then they will be back in their bodies in an instant. Though I am worried about Youko will he go back too I wonder and at least Yusuke should be fine he has gone through this before?”
Koenma blanking all other thoughts, glad that Botan was to tell his Spirit Detectives how the spell was to be broken and not him; he could imagine Yusuke’s anger already.
“Yes but there is a comparable difference this time though sir.”
“Just hurry up and go Botan, they only have so much time.”
“Yes sir.”

When Botan had left them, they decided it would be best if Kuwabara brought their bodies inside the old shrine as it looked like it was going to rain, though Hiei was annoyed that the baka had to touch his body but he kept his complaints to himself.The Spirit detectives had also found now that they weren’t in their bodies no longer, that none of their powers worked either in their spiritual bodies either. Hiei’s Jagan was missing from his forehead and his tattoo of the dragon gone from his arm too, Yusuke’s spirit power other than being able to detect auras were of no use and he couldn’t transform into his demon form as for Youko and Kurama nothing they tried worked either which was frustrating for the group especially if they were attacked at such a vulnerable moment all they had was Kuwabara for protection which wasn‘t very comforting thought.
As they waited patiently Botan finally appeared, her expression didn’t look promising actually she looked scared.
“So have you got some answers?”
“Yes Hiei I have and we even know how to get you back into your bodies too.”
“Well then hurry up, I want to get back in my body.” Yusuke had a strange feeling though whatever Botan was going to say would be bad.
“Well from what the information we have collected on the box is … erm this. The boxes of this type were used a long time ago by a clan of demon hunters who wanted to catch demons and use their abilities for their own use. So after they’d some how enticed the demon within the barrier. One of the hunters would touch the box which would be then activated and then within the barrier set up, the demon souls would be separated from their body. The hunters would then collect the soulless body and then take it, leaving the soul to wander for all eternity, or until one of us from spirit world picked him up. As for the bodies collected using a special technique that they had mastered they would temporally transfer their own soul into the demon whenever their powers was needed. The clan though was destroyed by a large group of demons who decided to collaborate together and annihilate them that was about over 1000 years ago though. All the boxes were meant to have been destroyed, but obviously not.”
Botan took a deep breathe, that was the easy part, now to tell them how they were to be returned back to their bodies.
“Well that explains what happened to us and how, but why? So far no ones turned up to take our bodies.” Kurama was curious to who would set up such a scheme. Though he and the rest had over the years gained a large number of enemies and rivals, none would have set up such an elaborate scheme and not yet take advantage of its results.
“So how do we return?” Youko was still amused slightly though Botan’s talk about the hunters did bring back memories of his own death.
“Well strangely enough Yusuke is familiar with the cure actually, he has had done to him once before though this time there is a difference.”
Yusuke’s ill feelings got even worse and then it hit him.
“Hey Botan is it what I think it is.”
“Oh you have clicked on fast haven’t you?”
“Do you two mind, I would like to return back to my body at least by the end of today.” Hiei’s pissed off voice broke through.
“Well the only way you can be returned back to your body is if some one kisses your soul and then kisses your body.”
“What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” This came from everyone.
“And the catch is well it just can’t be any normal person either it must be someone with large amount of spiritual power or it won’t work.”
“Hey where are we going to get some one with a large amount of spiritual power to kiss us and our bodies, they don’t exactly grow on trees you know.”
Frustration quivering through Yusuke. Botan winced and her face paled as she took a deep breathes.
“Koenma suggests that Kuwabara would have sufficient power to return you.”
“Argggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh.”
“No fucking way.”
“Over my dead body is that baka kissing me.”
“Kami.”
Various replies came from the spirit detectives. As for Kuwabara well his face went pale then red and then a thud sound echoed around the shrine.
“The baka has fainted.”
