An Old Friend and NewObligations

Chapter 3

Kagome awoke in a small room hoping that she had only dreamed of seeing Hiei again.

"Maybe he's changed. Maybe he's not so bad now. I mean if he hangs out with Yusuke and Kuwabara he can't be that bad…can he?" she asked herself mentally," Oh well, I'm much stronger now so he couldn't take the jewel from me if he tried." She wasn't going to try and kid herself. She knew that she had to be in Yusuke's apartment because she felt his presence in the next room. Although the last time she had seen him he hadn't felt as powerful as he did now.

"And the one sitting next to him must be Kuwabara." she thought.

Her musings were interrupted when a red haired man who looked about her age, physically, came in. She could tell that he was an old, if not ancient, kitsune though by his aura and the fact that his eyes betrayed the kind of wisdom that only comes with age and experience.

"He must be pretty powerful to keep his youkai energies in check the way he is right now. Yusuke must have told him that I am a miko and he probably doesn't want to startle me by letting his demon energies betray themselves right after I have woken up." she surmised quickly.

"Good you're awake. Yusuke was beginning to worry. I had to have him wait in the next room because I couldn't tend to you with him going to pieces right beside me." he chuckled," Pardon me. My name's Kurama."

"Well Kurama it's nice to meet you, but you don't need to hide your youkai energies from me. I am pretty well used to waking up around demons by now." Kagome answered

"You surprise me. Yusuke didn't tell me that his friend was so powerful a miko that she would be able to see through my shield. You must be fairly good." Kurama said calmly.

"When you go to the warring states era on a nearly daily basis where demons run amok you tend to get good at detecting that sort of thing." she answered.

"Ok then. If you're ready the others are waiting in the next room." he told her.

"Just one question first. About Hiei, is he" she paused," still evil? Last time I met him he was a power hungry bastard who nearly took the shikon no tama from me."

"Yes, he told me that he wasn't exactly a nice guy in his past. He has improved, but he's not mister goody two shoes either." The fox stated as if her question held little significance," Shall we go? The others are getting impatient."

"Alright…and Kurama?"

"Yes"

"Thank you for taking care of me. I just couldn't believe it when I saw Hiei open the door. It was too much of a shock to handle."

"That's ok. You're Yusuke's friend and I owe him a lot. More than I'll ever let him know in any case, so it's the least I could do."

"Thanks again."

With this he opened the door and held it for her as she walked into the room. Yusuke was sitting on the couch playing a fighting game against Kuwabara. Kuwabara was saying something about Yusuke cheating when they noticed that Kurama had returned to the room and brought Kagome with him. Everything was quiet for a moment. Kagome crossed the room and selected a chair near the window. The light of the setting sun played over her hair and skin giving the guys in the room the feeling that they were in the presence of a goddess.

As the conversation finally got started with a stupid comment from Kuwabara (typical) Hiei entered the room with some soft drinks. All got quiet again. Hiei tossed Yusuke and Kuwabara their drinks and sat down in the window opposite Kagome and pretended that he hadn't noticed her.

"Hello Hiei." Kagome said nervously," It's been a long time hasn't it?"

"………"

"Hiei?"

"………Yes. What do you want?"

"Um…To talk to you I guess. I mean the last time we met you nearly killed me. I just want to know how you've been and what you've done lately. Is that too much to ask?" she said becoming irritated at his continued silence.

"I'm alive. Isn't that enough?"

"Well, no. I'd like to hear more than two words from you…you… you pain in the ass!"

"In case you can't count I said five words, not counting contractions."

Kagome walk up to him and slapped him. Yusuke thought for sure that he would kill her for daring to strike him, but he did nothing.

"I'm leaving Yusuke. You can put up with this whiney bitch without me, can't you?" Hiei said. He slid open the window and left.

"Damn him!!!" Kagome shouted," He's just as bad as Inu Yasha!!!"
