An Old Friend and New Obligations

Chapter 4

There she was again. That woman. What was it about her that kept him near her? There was something different about her. She just wasn't normal. She was stubborn, rude, and just plain annoying but she was like a fever to him. A fever that he just couldn't get rid of.

He approached her and he heard her quick intake of breath. She quickly drew back and released an arrow from her bow. He dodged it and was right in front of her in an instant. Her bow and arrows clattered to the ground. She shivered with fear. He leaned in and kissed her. She gasped against his lips. He drew away with the Shikon no Tama in his hand. Then he buried his sword in her gut and drew it out again covering the sword and his front with her blood. He tried to walk away but was arrested by an arrow that had appeared in his back.

He turned to see the woman standing upright with blood gushing from her wound. She held a bow whose string was still quivering from the shot. His vision blurred. The last thing he saw before his vision failed was the woman removing the jewel from his grasp and falling to the ground, her blood staining the earth beneath her.

Hiei awoke in a cold sweat. That was the third time he had relived that day in his dreams. Every night it was the same. The kiss, the jewel, stabbing Kagome, the arrow. It wouldn't leave him in peace. Ever since he had left Yusuke's that day the image of her wouldn't leave his mind. He would lose it if it didn't stop soon.

She heard a noise behind her. She turned with an arrow at the ready. It was him. She released her arrow. It missed as he disappeared and reappeared in front of her. She shuddered and dropped her weapon. He leant forward and kissed her. She was astounded. As her drew away she noticed that the jewel around her neck was gone. He had taken the Shikon no Tama! Suddenly there was a searing pain in her lower abdomen. She looked down to see his sword protruding from her stomach.

He pulled the sword from her body and her blood sprayed over him and his sword. Her blood. She nearly fainted.

"No." she said to herself," I can't let this happen!"

With a burst of strength she picked up her bow and arrows from beside her feet and let one fly at his back. It hit and he turned. He stared at her a moment then fell. She stumbled over to him and took the jewel from his hand. Then as her strength started to fail she fell beside him. She fought oblivion long enough to hear Inu Yasha shout for her. He was safe. She heard the others voices as well. They were all safe. With this knowledge she let oblivion take her.

She woke with a start. She just couldn't shake that dream. She had had it three times since she had seen Hiei again. He was driving her insane. Memories that she didn't want came flooding back. He had taken her Shippou from her. She would never forgive him. He had killed her little boy. The image of Hiei standing over the little kitsune's body with his blood dripping from his sword came unbidden to her mind. Tears that she had fought for years came into her eyes. She punched the wall of her room as she began to cry.

"I'll never let him touch another one of my friends again!" she shouted.
