Summary: The day the world was broken.

“So the first floor is finished?” Kagome questioned as she approached the building.

“Yep, now we need to start on the second floor.” Yoshiro said as he shivered slightly. It was starting to get into the months of fall, which were making it quite cooler.

“Perhaps you should get some of the other boys to help out?” Kagome suggested as she looked at it. “I know they’ll be happy to help.”

“Even the girls would help if we asked them,” said Shippo with a slight chuckle. “But I think that’s a good idea. We should call some of the others over to help out.”

“Alright, we’ll go get the others tomorrow then. They’ll be a little mad that we’ve kept you to ourselves for so long, but I’m sure they’ll understand.” Yoshiro said with a slight pout.

“How long will you be gone?” Kagome questioned.

“A week at most,” Shippo supplied. “We’ll do it tonight that way you’ll be able to get through the week.”

“Alright,” the woman said with a slightly sad smile.

“You were waiting for me?” Hiei questioned as he dropped from the tree two days later.

“Yes.” She responded as she smiled at him. “I’ve not much else to do.”

“You could spend time with your sons.”

“They are away, gathering family to help with the house and who have not seen me for a long time.” The girl whispered.

“Have you been here everyday to wait for me to show?”

Blushing slightly, she nodded. “Besides my sons, I do not know anyone else besides you that live here. Well, stays here.” She amended as she looked up at him, smiling slightly.

“What do you wish to do today then?” The hi-youkai questioned as he looked down upon her.

“We could go to the hotel room that I’m staying at until the house is finished. I know the cool air doesn’t bother you, but it would be nice to stay warm today.” She said with a giggle.

He nodded to that. “What hotel?”

“Umm… The Kamikazi.”

One of his brows rose at that. “The fox told me of that place, he said it was the most expensive.”

“It was my sons’ choice.”

Shaking his head, he pulled her to her feet and turned around. “Which floor are you on?”

“The penthouse, so it’s the entire top floor.” Kagome whispered before her eyes widened when he lowered himself so she could get on his back.

“Get on; I’ll have us there quicker.” This time, Hiei knew that her eyes did indeed flash to a bluish color. He smirked slightly and took off into the trees, when he reached the houses, he jumped from roof to roof. Instead of the girl screaming in terror like many had, she actually giggled in joy. Taking a peek at her, he noticed that flecks of blue could clearly be seen within her eyes.

When they reached the balcony of her apartment, he set her down and she smiled happily at him. A small smile was returned to her and the blue flecks in her eyes multiplied. That shocked him and he found himself almost excited that he could make her happy. She quickly let them in and slid the door shut behind her.

“How long will you be in Ningenkai this time?”

The question brought him from his thoughts and he looked to where she was making something. He hadn’t realized it, but he’d somehow sat down on her couch and relaxed slightly, “a few days.”

“I’ve heard that there’s a tournament coming up in the demon world. Will you be entering?”

Looking at her in surprise, he questioned “where did you hear that?”

“One of my boys told me. They also said that a demon named Enki won the last tournament and that this tournament would decide the new king.”

“Hai, I will.”

“Then shouldn’t you be training instead of spending time with me?” She asked while cocking her head to the side in curiosity.

Hiei had to admit, it was a valid and good question. “I am strong enough.”

“I must warn you, my sons plan to enter.”

“I actually have a question for you about them.” He stated. When she looked his way, he continued. “How is it I can not sense them?”

“They are great at masking,” was her simple reply. “Both are powerful, and their parents would be proud; just as I am.”

“What do they do?” Hiei questioned this time.

“They said they were thieves, and I assume they make excellent ones. Their skills are rather good from all their training in stealth.”

“You do not care that they are thieves?”

“They find joy in stealing; I can not fault them for that. To tell them to stop would be like telling myself not to do things I loved to do. Besides, thieves tend to make people stronger.”

“How so?”

“If you’ve ever been stolen from, then you wish to know how the person was capable of taking an item from you without your notice. Soon you pay more attention to things and learn their ways, so a thief teaches you to be more aware.”

“That is an interesting point of view.”

“I like to think of things in different ways, Hiei-sama.”

His eyes locked with hers as she spoke the title once more. He should’ve enjoyed hearing it coming from someone, but for some reason he hated it coming from her. With this in mind, he shook his head. “Quit addressing me with sama; I do not like it coming from you.”

“Would you prefer Hiei-san better? Or perhaps Hiei-kun?”

“I am not one for manners. I’d prefer if you simply addressed me using my name.”

“Alright, Hiei,” she replied with a smile, and still the blue became more prominent. Carefully she carried something over to him and placed it in front of him. “It’s miso soup.”

He had some and nodded to her. “It’s good.”

Smiling, she raised a spoonful to her own lips. When they were finished, she gathered the bowls and washed them out in the sink. Turning to look at him, an idea came to her. “Would you care to watch a movie? There’s many choices in one of the rooms.”

“I’m not into watching movies.”

“Have you ever tried?” The girl questioned as she turned to him. “Tell me, do you prefer mystery, horror, science-fiction, or perhaps romance?”

“Horror or mystery.”

“Alright,” the girl responded as she moved into one of the rooms. Moments later she came out with a DVD in hand. “Yoshiro said this was a good one.” She mentioned as she placed it in the player and took a seat next to him.

Sunshine was what woke her. It seemingly glared into her eyes and it had her quickly returning to consciousness; but when her eyes finally opened, she found that it was only a light. For it was still night-time. Shaking herself from her sleepy state, she rose from the couch and looked around to see Hiei sleeping on a windowsill. A smile touched her lips at the fact that he’d remained here, with her. Making her way out to the balcony, she leaned against the cool concrete and closed her eyes. Wind blew threw her tresses as a small smile touched her lips.

Air flowed threw the trees as they stood there. On one side was an injured demon, and on the other an untrained ningen miko. The demon had short messy black hair, but that was only because he was soaking wet. His deep red eyes were clouded with pain. “Are you ok, youkai-sama?”

“Why do you care, miko?” He questioned in a deep voice.

“You are hurt.”

“That’s stating the obvious, ningen.”

Now the girl huffed. “My
name is Kagome.”

“Tell me why I should care? You are here to try to purify me.”

“I am?” The girl questioned as she cocked her head to the side. “I thought I was here to help you.”

“Why would a miko help a youkai?”

“I am not a normal miko, and I do not keep to their standards and traditions.” She said simply. “I may have the powers, but I am no miko.”

“And why should I trust you?”

“If I wanted to kill you, I would’ve already tried,” was her simple response as she approached him. And though he bared his fangs as she approached, she continued. Paying no heed to the threat he posed. She merely sat down gracefully and began treating his wounds. Soon he calmed and allowed her to do so.

The memory flashed through her mind and caused her to turn and look at the hi-youkai in the room behind her. Her head slowly began to spin as she noticed the resemblance that Hiei held to the demon she once knew. It made her wonder if they were related or if it were mere coincidence.

“Kagome-sama,” came the whisper of a deep voice, making the girl jump as she turned to it. A chuckle escaped the youkai’s lips at this. “You were not on guard my dear.”

“I saw no need to be.” She responded as she turned back to the cliff side.

The demon’s eyes narrowed at that reply. “Why would you feel no need to be on guard?”

“Why should I be? Death will come when it’s my time, and perhaps my time is now.” She suggested as she took another step towards the edge. “Have you ever wondered; what it would be like to fly?”

The man’s eyes widened as the girl turned to him with a feint smile as she fell backwards from the cliff’s edge. “Kagome! No!” He exclaimed as he dove off after her. When his arms wrapped around her, he flipped around and managed to land on his feet in a tree, thus flinging him back into the air and landing on the ground. The girl was held firmly in his arms as he glared down at her, only to widen in shock at her soulless expression. “Kagome-sama… Wake up!”

That memory had her eyes watering. He had risked his life for her and she only wanted to die at that time. Her body shivered from the cold, though she was numb to its effects, not feeling the chill which the air held.

“Kagome, I need to talk to you.”

“Alright Inu-kun,” the girl replied as she rose to her feet.

They walked a little ways from camp before the man turned to her. “I… I need to tell you something.”

“What is it Inu-kun?” The girl asked with curious eyes.

“I’ve chosen Kikyo.”

And the world came crashing down with those words, but she never showed it. No. Instead she straightened and smiled for him. “I’m glad that you’ve been able to make your decision. I hope that the two of you are happy together, Inu-kun.” She said before turning to leave. “I’ll be in the hot springs for now. It’s my turn to bathe.”

The memories, they simply wouldn’t quit coming. Slowly the girl sunk to the floor of the place as her eyes started turning pure silver once more. The memories were starting to get to her. It was too much.

“I want you to promise me something my love.”

“Anything Shou,” a young woman with blue-gray eyes whispered as she looked into his violet-crimson.

“Promise that if anything happens to me, you’ll move on.”

“But nothing will happen to you.” She whispered with shocked eyes.

“I know, but I still want your promise.”

“Alright, then you have it.”

He smiled at her then, “good, because I’d want you to be happy.” He kissed her with the gentleness that made her yearn for him before pulling back and looking up into her eyes. “I love you, Kagome. I always will.”

“Shou…” She whispered as tears slowly began to fall, each one glowing the bluish-silver of her energy. Slowly rain began to fall in torrents as her crying continued, and the wind picked up making the air almost freezing.

It all woke Hiei who looked at the girl in startled fascination as the elements appeared to be trying to soothe her. Slipping from the windowsill, he easily made his way to her. Wrapping his arms around her, he pulled her into his embrace as she looked up at him with watery silver eyes that barely retained the blue flecks from earlier, “Kagome?”

The question had her pausing before she gave a tremulous smile. “You’ve never said my name before.”

He smirked down at her for that. “Perhaps I’ll say it again.”

And she giggled while hiccupping from her previous crying. Slowly the rain stopped as the tears slowly quit in their descent. “I’m sorry.” She whispered as she buried her face into his chest.

“For what?”

“For being a burden,” she whispered out before her body went limp in his arms.

It surprised him that she fainted, but he simply picked her up and placed her back on the couch. Since her clothes were still wet, he heated the air around them, easily drying both her and himself off. Hesitantly, he allowed his fingers to comb through her ebony tresses before he sighed to himself. He now realized the pull to be desire, but not a desire like lust. For some reason, he desired to be with this human girl; no, this human woman.

“Have any of you found out anything about the orb of life?” Koenma questioned as he looked around at his team.

“We’ve not heard a word about it.” Kurama said smoothly as he looked at the others. “The one who stole it did not sell it, and it can not be sensed elsewhere.”

“Unless we get more information on it, I doubt we’ll be able to find it.” Yusuke said simply.

“I don’t care to find the bauble.” Hiei spoke coldly. He remembered the story of what had happened, and he knew the bauble had something to do with it.

“What? Why?” Koenma asked as he turned to him.

“Ask your father,” was his cold response.

“Do you know something we don’t shrimp?” Kuwabara questioned as he looked to the hi-youkai.

“I don’t know much more than you, but I do know that Enma betrayed someone centuries ago and that this Orb has something to do with that betrayal.”

“Where the fuck did you learn that?” Yusuke questioned as he turned to him.

“I have my sources.” The hi-youkai replied.

“Mukuro?” Kurama questioned.

“No.” Was the last thing he said before disappearing. He needed to return to the Makai now.

“If the shrimp won’t help, what do we do now?” Kuwabara asked.

“We need to find out what happened. My father is hiding something, and we need to know what.” Koenma said somewhat calmly.

“Please Kagome-sama, I want to die.”

“Then you are a coward, like me.”

“What?”

“You heard me.” The blue-gray eyed woman commented as she looked into the nearby water. “Death is the coward’s way out. To live takes great courage, to die takes nothing but fear.”

“What do you mean?” A young boy with black hair questioned.

Kagome turned to him in that moment with a sad smile. “I tried to kill myself Kohaku-kun. I fell from a high cliff only to be saved by a friend. I was scared of living; my fear drove me to death. But I soon realized that I needed to be brave, to live for those who cared for me. If you die, you hurt everyone who cares for you. To live, you would make them all happy. Your soul does not carry the sin of the murders that your body committed. You are free to do as you please now. The blood lay on Naraku’s hands, not yours.”

“But how can you be so sure?”

“A technique that was whispered to me; I used your own body’s energy against you and it uses your soul to attack you. If your soul is pure, then you live. If your soul is not, then your own energy will give you a slow, painful death.”

“In truth?”

“Hai Kohaku. I speak the truth.” The girl whispered as she smiled at him.

Kagome sprung awake with a bit of a cold sweat as that memory continued replaying through her mind. Slowly her eyes traveled down to her own hands and she sighed. “My hands are covered in the blood of many innocent because I shattered the Shikon, and yet they appear as clean as day. Perhaps I was right that day, but perhaps I was wrong as well. Scars may not claim the soul, but they will forever claim the heart.”

After a bit, she rose from her bed and moved to the balcony of her room, the cool morning air felt good against her skin, though she felt weaker than normal. With a soft sigh, she closed her eyes and allowed her mind to wander. It did not take long for more memories to resurface.

“Are you alright?” Kagome exclaimed as she raced to a little boy’s side. Slices covered most of his body and all were bleeding profusely. “You poor thing,” she whispered before she began working diligently on his wounds.

An hour or so later saw another demon rushing into the clearing, “Yoshiro!” The girl quickly placed herself between this new demon and the child which lay behind her. She had no weapon, but she could still somewhat protect herself. When the demon noticed her, he growled. “Step away from my son miko.”

That left her shocked. “He’s your son?” She questioned as she looked between the two. Allowing some of her energy out, she watched as the demon tensed when it twisted around him, before she pulled it back in. “Sorry, I thought you were here to harm him.” She whispered before returning to the boy’s side and stroking his hair soothingly. “I’m Higurashi Kagome.”

“My name’s Satoshi Shou. Aren’t you a miko?”

“I’m not fully trained, though I don’t hurt demons for no reason so you can relax.”

Her lips twisted into a semi-smile at that. It was the first time she’d ever met Shou, and she knew that she’d always remember it. Just as she’d always remember the day he first told her that he loved her.

“You seem distracted.”

A small smile touched the girl’s red lips as she turned to him. “I was simply wondering.”

“What about?”

“Life,” was her vague response.

“Are you trying to be vague my dear?”

“Whatever makes you ask that Shou?” the girl responded with a giggle.

“Because you are.”

“Perhaps, but perhaps my thoughts are so jumbled that I can’t decipher them myself.”

“Perhaps you don’t want to.”

“I will admit that I’m confused.”

“What about?”

“You,” she whispered. “I care so much for you, but sometimes I wonder if you feel the same. Do you care for me?”

“No.” He responded, and grabbed her chin so he could see her watering eyes before she could turn away. “I don’t care for you Kagome, because I love you.” He said as he took her lips in an emotion filled kiss.

“I miss you so much Shou.” She whispered into the night. For some reason, it seemed colder than usual on this night. Kagome’s eyes closed once more before her lips slowly lifted into a smile. “I barely know him, and yet I still grow more attached. Perhaps I’m once again falling, but I wonder; if he falls back, will I be able to keep him this time?”

“We won!” Sango exclaimed as they all shouted in joy.

Kagome smiled, even though her body was littered with wounds. Naraku was finally defeated, and after so many years of pain. “Yes, we won.”

“And now the jewel should be refused!” Miroku exclaimed over the others as he carefully picked up the tainted gem and handed it to the young miko.

Kouga dutifully handed over his shards as well. With a smile, Kagome allowed her shenki to rise around her and the jewel instantly attached together. The sparkling pink gem gave off a brilliant glow before exploding into pink dust and entering the girl’s body. “What…?”

“Your wish has been granted.” Four voices said in harmony as they rose from the earth and the ground began to shake. “Never again shall the jewel be within reach of those who would taint it. And Kikyo is to be turned human so that Inuyasha may have his happiness.”

A brilliant blast of light shot through the clearing as three of the souls disappeared. One waited as most of Kagome’s soul left her body and entered Kikyo’s. Then the remaining soul slammed into Kagome’s body. “K-Kagome…?” Inuyasha questioned as he moved to her side, Kikyo right behind him.

Her blue-gray eyes opened soon after they all gathered around her. “I am alright.” She whispered to them all.

“Good.” Shou whispered to her as he pulled her into his arms. The others began to celebrate once more as Kagome turned to face the man who held her. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this, and now that the battle is won it is time.”

“For what?”

“Kagome, will you give me the honor of becoming my mate?”

A small smile lit her face at remembering the question before her eyes dulled completely back to silver at the memories of what happened next.

“You promised you’d leave us alone!” Kikyo argued as she glared at the being before them.

“The girl is too powerful, she must be contained.”

“Contained!” Shou roared as he pushed her behind him. “You plan on ripping her soul from her body and locking it in a chrysalis stage!”

“Shikon no Megami is too powerful to remain here.”

“We will not let you take her.” Several voices called out in unison. All who were able rose to their feet and stood before the being who wished to take away their friend.

“So be it.” And he called forth an army of his own spirit forces.

It was during the battle that they lost many. Kagome’s eyes swelled with tears as she saw Sango and Miroku fall, as well as many other humans and demons, but the damn held within her snapped when Shou also fell. “Shou!” her scream echoed throughout the lands as she raced to the dying form of her beloved. “No! Please don’t leave me? I love you!”

“Forgive me Kagome, but I can not.” And his eyes slid shut.

A blast struck her and she could feel that her soul was being ripped from her body. She unsteadily rose to her feet as she allowed her bangs to shadow her eyes, the wind picked up, swirling around her body and blowing the ebony tresses from her face. Everyone gasped and backed away as they all looked into solid silver eyes. “Traitor.” she whispered as she looked into the eyes of someone she thought they could trust. “You betray me Enma and one day, you will fall.” With that, she let off a blast that shook the entire earth, even the heavens trembled at her powers and hell bowed down. The blast was the releasing of her own soul.

Tears slowly made their way down her pale cheeks as the memory continued replaying through her mind. All she could do was fall to her knees in pain as she looked up at the sun, “so much pain, and yet so little healing.”

“You summoned me Mukuro?” Hiei asked as he entered the throne room.

“Yes, I need to speak with you.”

“This is about us, right?”

“It is, and I don’t think it’s working out.” She said with a sigh. “We are just too similar.”

“I agree.”

“I still wish for you to remain my second in command, so you inherit my land when I die.”

“Very well.”

“You seem in a hurry, Hiei; any particular reason as to why?”

“I have… met someone.” He admitted somewhat stiffly. “She awaits my return in Ningenkai.”

“So you have met a human?” She asked with a raised brow.

“Hai, and she has awareness. She approached me.”

Some people say that things never change, and in this case, they’re right. Kagome smiled as she watched Inuyasha and Kouga fight over the littlest things. She giggled slightly as Kikyo and Ayame whispered comments to her. They were all surprised when Kouta spoke upon seeing her. Apparently Kagura and Sesshoumaru expected her to visit them at some point. She told Rin to tell them that she would as soon as she was able.

The group had been there for four days when he had appeared. With a smile she’d excused herself from the girls and made her way to the God Tree. The branches blew gently in the cool autumn breeze as she easily made her way into its boughs. Once there, she saw him, his dazzling ruby eyes and his handsome visage. Without thinking, she giggled and threw her arms around him. “I missed you Hiei.” The words were whispered into his ear as she slowly pulled back to look into his face.

Though his eyes widened slightly, he showed no other emotion. “It seems you are surrounded by people, and yet you still missed me?”

“I…” She started, but stopped when she really had no reason. “I’ve been lonesome without you,” were her truthful words. “I find that I can be surrounded by people and still feel so alone.”

“Are they not your family?”

“In a way, yes, but things are so different now than when we were a family. Kouta and the girls are all grown up now. Kohaku even mated Rin. It’s odd when the last time I saw them they were so young.” She replied with a sigh. “Anyways, how long are you in Ningenkai for this time?”

“As long as I desire unless I’m needed.”

“How long do you plan to stay?” She questioned as she cocked her head to the side.

“Until you tire of me,” was his only reply.

Kagome giggled as she carried two bowls of ice cream into her room a little after midnight. She and Hiei had been spending a lot of time together since his return and she was happy for it. The others noticed as her eyes slowly began returning to their original blue-gray state. They were happy for her, but they weren’t sure on the cause. Now though, she was trying to sneak their little midnight snack out of the kitchen and into her room without getting caught. And man was it hard when you had people sleeping on the floor in the living room because they’d been watching a movie.

She giggled when she finally made it to the door and inside her room. “That was fun.”

“Did you get it?”

“Yes Mr. I-don’t-eat-human-food.” The girl said with another giggle as she handed him his bowl.

He glared somewhat playfully at her as he set it aside, before grabbing hers and doing the same thing; she ‘eep’ed as he tackled her to the floor and pinned her to the ground. “I win.”

“No you don’t.” She argued as she pushed him off and tried to pin him. But she merely failed and ended up pinned again. As she looked up, she got lost in his crimson eyes, and she could tell that he was lost in hers as he bent down and softly captured her lips with his own. Her eyes slid shut as he released her hands and wrapped one of his arms around her as he used the other to hold himself up.

When the kiss was broken, he looked at her in shock at his own actions. She herself was shocked, but more at the feelings within the kiss. Slowly her hand rose to her lips as her now fully blue-gray eyes looked up into his crimson. “I’m sorry, I should not have kissed you.” He whispered as he went to get up.

But she stopped him by grabbing his arms and pushing her upper half up so she could meet his lips once more. This time, she broke the kiss and looked up at him with her clashing blue-gray eyes. The color nearly had him gasping as he watched the blue and gray battle for dominance. “Never apologize for kissing me when I liked it.”

“Then you won’t care if I kiss you again?” He questioned as he leaned down to where their lips brushed.

“Kiss me only if you desire me.” She whispered out. His eyes widened slightly before he smirked and captured her lips in a passionate kiss. He certainly did desire her. The kiss deepened as their tongues began to battle, though Kagome allowed him to win.

So what do you all think so far? Let me know, because I’m curious!
