STARTING OVER
Hullo all. I am really glad that you all love my story so much. Its times like this when I almost want to write comments about reviews. Almost. Buuuut I am a really lazy writer, well not that lazy. But one of my pet peeves is when a chapter looks really long, then you read it and like 3/4ths of the thing are responses to reviews! I mean come on! Do you really need to cheat people out of a story like that? So I'm sorry if you want recognition for gracing my story with your opinion, but unless you say something worthwhile, or horribly offensive, I wont say a thing. Another thing, it would seem that none of you want to be in my fic. Hey, no skin of my nose. Less to write, less to read, less to do in general, and that agrees with my indolent nature. But I will give you…actually I'm not sure when I will introduce Toguro's team, so I'm not sure on the time limit………I'll have to think ahead. Oh well, ON TO THE FANFIC!!!!!!
CHAPTER 11
Fear. That was the only thing Shippou could feel. He couldn't feel Sota's restraining hand on his shoulder, not his sword (which he had in a death grip), not even Kagome's purifying powers that where licking at his back, singing his tail. All he could feel was the all-consuming fear that his family would be ripped from his grasp once again. The fear increased ten-fold when the demon who caused it looked his way.
The demon was tall, perhaps seven feet. He had straight, black hair that fell just below his pointed ears. He had no armor, and carried only a sword at his hip. His claws where long, and an ominous shade of greenish black. His lips where a natural black color, and you could see a long, pearly fang pointing from in between them. All of this made him an impressive figure, but what struck terror into the hearts of all around him were his eyes. They where blood red in color, empty of all but greed and loathing.
Shippou shivered involuntarily. He shook his head to dispel the mists of fear that had arisen, and looked over his shoulder to see the other's reactions. Sota, having never met Naraku before, was in a defensive position, holding his sword before him, expecting the unexpected. Heie had moved closer to Kagome, instinctively stepping in front of her. Kurama and Yuske had done the same, though for different reasons. The three formed a triangle in front of her, shielding her from the demon's view. Shippou moved next to Sota so they where standing behind Kagome as a rear-guard.
Kagome was trying hard not to let her emotions show, but you could tell she was distressed. Her hands where clutching the cement bench in front of her, making gouge marks and occasionally crushing it to rubble. Her eyes where narrowed to mere slits, and she was clenching her jaw. Shippou swallowed and forced himself to remember how to breathe, even though it had only been a few seconds.
The apprehensive moment passed when the demon looked away, towards Koto. Everyone visibly relaxed, sans Kagome. She had loosened her grip on the bench, but her expression never changed. Her every sense trained on the demon sauntering to the ring. The demon once again turned to sweep them with his sinister gaze. He paused on Shippou, making the kit's spine freeze.
He can't recognize me! I've only fought him in my smallest form! Haha-ue what do I do?!
Shippou waited for a response for several moments, then when he thought she wouldn't answer she spoke into his mind.
`Don't react; he doesn't know you as Shippou. I suspect he recognizes you as Aoi.'
Shippou let go of his fear of discovery, and gave the demon a hard glare. Said demon met the fox's glare with one of his own, then moved on to Sota. Sota showed no fear, instead bared his fangs and made an obscene gesture with his right middle finger. The demon smirked at this and let his gaze wander to the Spirit Detectives. They glared, and one made the same obscene motion as Sota. (Guess which one!) The demon narrowed his eyes slightly before letting his glare shift to Kagome. His eyes widened a bit in surprise. They soon returned to normal when he smiled and bowed.
"My Lady Megami. It is an honor to meet one such as yourself, though I was under the impression that you had been killed by a hanyou some time ago."
Kagome closed her eyes and answered in an arctic voice.
"Your informant was misled, I would never fall to a hanyou. As such, you would do well to liberate your aspirations of taking my life yourself, half-breed."
The demons eyes bled red, making the iris change to a depthless black. The remaining demons started jeering and throwing trash at the demon, though none of it reached him since he was in the middle of the ring with Koto and his opponent.
Koto cleared her throat and turned her back on the audience so she could face the fighters.
"Right, please state your names."
The demon from Aramimitama answered first.
"Jinezumi."
He was short, with long gray hair that was in a large braid held tied to a gold ring. (A/N think Aisha from outlaw star, I'm not sure if that's how you spell her name but ohhhhhhwellllll. Btw jinezumi means shrew ^_^) He carried a short sword tucked in his belt. Said belt was a tacky yellow silk that was cut halfway through because his sword had no sheath.
"Jabaku."
He stepped forward and towered over his competition, as well as the ref. Koto looked up at his face and swallowed loudly.
"Um, well. The first fight of the fourth match will be Jabaku vs. Jinezumi!"
(A/N- Jabaku means curse, just so you know I was thinking of naming him ass, but I decided against it. Tell me if you think I should change it. ^_^ I am all for naming that ketsunoana ass, hehe you catch that? `naming that ass ass' hahahaha I crack myself up. *¬. ¬ sees audience sweatdrop* umm right ON WITH THE FANFIC!)
Jabaku wasted no time in attacking. He disappeared is a cloud of purple miasma, reappearing behind Jinezume with his sword drawn. Jinezume caught the movement behind him in time and ducked the singing blade. The two fighters rolled away from each other and jumped into a defense position, both of their swords drawn. Jabaku was the first to act, lunging at Jinezumi sword held parallel to the ring. Jinezumi dodged to the side at the last minute and lashed out Jabaku with his sword. Unfortunately for him, when he dodged his braid had went flying right at Jabaku's face. Out of reflex he had caught it, but he soon saw its potential as a weapon. So when Jinezumi tried to strike with his sword Jabaku gave a sharp tug on the braid, sending Jinezumi off balance. One of Jinezumi's teammates, a woman, cried out to him.
"BAKA! I told you to cut your hair!"
Jinezume gave no indication that he had heard her; he did however try to swing his sword behind him and sever the improvised leash. The operative word in that sentence being `try', Jabaku had seen the blade coming and gave another jerk on the braid. Jinezumi yelped in pain and grabbed his neck. Jabaku smirked and raised his blade to strike Jinezumi's back. Before he struck he leaned in and whispered into his opponent's ear.
"You should have listened to your woman."
Jinezumi acted faster than Jabaku expected. He pivoted on his heal, driving his left elbow into Jabaku's solar plexus and used his other right hand to sever the tether connecting him to Jabaku. Jabaku stumbled backwards clutching his abdomen.
"Oh! What a HIT! I think I heard a bone crack!"
Koto was jumping up and down pointing at Jabaku, who still hunched and had an arm wrapped loosely over his front. Jinezumi smirked.
"Don't think I didn't know the risks of my hair style."
Jabaku sighed and stood up to his full height.
"I did indeed overestimate you."
Jinezumi narrowed his eyes and tightened his grip on his sword.
"What do you mean, overestimate?"
Jabaku closed his eyes and spoke in a nonchalant tone.
"Oh I don't suppose it matters since you will be dead soon."
Jinezumi took a step forward then froze and grabbed his neck. His eyes where wide, showing fear and pain. His mouth was a perfect `o' with blue shadows creeping onto his lips. Still clutching his throat Jinezumi fell to his knees, then forward onto his stomach, landing with a muted thump.
Koto had her hand up by her neck in an unconscious defensive gesture.
"Eww. Oh right the count. One…two…"
Jinezumi's female teammate was in tears.
"…Three…"
She fell to her knees and held her face in her hands.
"…Four…"
Jabaku chuckled and started to walk out of the ring.
"…Five…Six…"
The female raised her tear-streaked face from her hands and glared at him.
"…Seven..."
When he ignored her she rose to her feet and screamed at his retreating back.
"…Eigh-"
"BASTARD! What the fuck did you do to him?"
Jabaku stopped walking and turned to her, his eyes finally back to their normal coloring.
"The same thing I did to you, my dear."
She frowned in confusion before crossing her arms over her chest and coughed violently, along with the rest of her team.
"…Nine…"
Jabaku smirked and turned to face Kagome once again.
"…And TEN! Jabaku is the winner! Will the next fighters pl…….ohh, ahh it would seem that the entire Aramimitama team has just up and died. Well I guess that means the Hon Kui team advances. Sorry folks but it looks like the blood bath has been cut short this time."
Koto bowed and went to summon the clean up crew to pick up the dead members of the team Aramimitama. Jabaku strode over to where team Urameshi was seated and bowed.
"Still doubt my skill?"
Kagome answered in a bored voice.
"You killed them with miasma, a cheap trick. Don't expect it to work on any of my fighters, they don't die from parlor tricks."
With that she gave them the mental cue to leave. They rose in one fluid synchronized motion. Kagome gave one last comment before they disappeared in the shadows of the exit.
"You overestimate yourself."
Jabaku strained his eyes trying to follow their movement s trough the shadows. He soon gave up with a frustrated growl.
"I WILL defeat you Shi no Megami, I know your secrets, your weaknesses. You will die at my hand Kagome."
