Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction / InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ The Thin Line ❯ The Vixen Within ( Chapter 1 )
DV- Okay, since I finished Kagome no Kitsune on fanfiction.net before I could get it over here, I decided to have a solely mediaminer.org YYH\IY crossover, too. More or less the same pairings, Kurama\Kagome, Hiei\Sango, InuYasha\Boton, Kuwabara\Yukina, Miroku\Shizuru, Yusuke\Keiko, Sessho-maru\OC, Kikyou\the-firey-depths-of-Hell. My other fanfiction stories will be posted here as well, except for Sugar High which DH and I have proclaimed a complete and total failure.
Inu- ALL Your stories are failures!
DV- *glares at Inu* I give you one chance to redeem yourself to this all powerful crazed fan that you have insulted.
Kagome- O.o; Maybe you've been spending too much time around Sessho-maru, DV.
Sess- Any time the vixen has spent around this Sessho-maru was forced on my part.
Chiisai- You're not alone there, pal.
Inu- Feh! What can you do to me?
Kagome- -_-;;; Leave him to suffer his own stupidity?
Everyone else- *nods*
DV- Before I start making Inu-chan rue the day he was born, I'd like to take a moment to say I own nothing. And I lost my sanity in a bet with Little Rabbit Fuu Fuu!!!
Everyone- O.O

The Vixen Within
"KAGOMEEEEEEEEEEEE," I fell back with a light `oomph!' as the mini red canonball I'd taken in as my kit connected with my stomach. "I'm so glad your back!!! InuYasha's been mean ever since you left to take your Gee-omo-tree test. He hit me five times in the last two days!!!" I felt my ki flare around me at the thought of anyone harming my kit. That dirty rotten no-good-!!!
^SENSHI!!!!!!!!!!!^
~What?~
^Quit putting thoughts in my head, you obbessive little-^
~Hey, he IS our kit, and as his mother, we have every right to bring death to any who threaten him. And technically, it's OUR head.~
^That may be true, but InuYasha's my friend, and he doesn't know what we truly are. And no, technically it's MY head considering you weren't even supposed to be born with me in the first place!!!^
~…~
I sighed and smiled down at my kit. Senshi I could deal with later.
"Well then, let's go show InuYasha the extent of a mother-son bond." I told him. He beamed up at me. I knew how much he loved it when I called him my son.
"Kay!!!!!!!" Shippo jumped up onto my shoulder, and sent a wave of ki nito the neckalace I'd given him three months ago when we did the blood ritual making him my son in all youkai. A ritual only kitsunes knew about.
~Hello, Kit,~ Senshi said affectionately.
-Hi, Senshi-okaa-san,- Shippo answered back. Our kit and little brother were the only two to know about Senshi. The rest of my family and friends were still clueless to her existance.
Souta had found out by accident when he was six and I was thirteen, before all this stuff with the jewel and InuYasha. He'd seen us transforming for the first time, and was caught completely off guard. We managed to calm him down and receive a sollem promise from him he wouldn't tell anybody.
Actually, it was sort of a relief to have someone to talk to about Senshi. Especially after I fell throught the well and into this world. And Souta was an eager listener, finding everything I told him about Senshi, and InuYasha, and the Shikon no Tama absolutely fastenating.
At Senshi's insistance, we started giving him a bit of training not long after falling through the well. She thought it'd be good for the family if something came to hurt them while we were in the Sengoku Jidai.
She won't say it, but I think she's worried that Demons in the Makai will hear about the Shikon and hurt them to get to us. Which will draw the Reikai's attention to our family, which will mean more complications for the both of us. My friends I could tell or show my skills to or else make them suspicious.
If the Reikai finds out they didn't kill Senshi, they might come after me in hopes of finishing the job. I don't need my family in that kind of mess over us.
Just then, a red blur I'd sensed ever since I left the well dropped in front of me from a tree.
"Wench! What the hell took you so long to get back," I resisted the urge to wrinkle my nose at the strong smell of death and decay coming off of him. Shippo didn't even bother with that courtacy.
"SIT!!!!!" BAM!!!!! "I already told you I had a test, InuYasha, and I had to restock our supplies considering we were out of ramen, so don't yell at me!!! and what's this about you hurting Shippo?"
"Feh," InuYasha said, crossing his arms. "Brat wouldn't stop bugging me,"
"Sitsitsit!!!!!!!" Bambambam!!!!!!! "I don't care what he did, InuYasha, you don't hurt a child!!!!!!!"
"What do you care if I do or don't? You're acting like you're his fucking mother or something!" InuYasha eyed me curiously. I sighed.
"Not that it's any of your buisness, but in a way, I am,"
"Kagome's been my okaa-san for three months now!" Shippo said cheerfully, I bit back a laugh at the look on InuYasha's face.
~Hey!~
-You're my okaa-san too, Senshi, but I can't tell InuYasha,-
~Well, just as long as it's understood.~ I almost shook my head at my other half's clingy nature.
"What?! But how? She's human!!!" before I could stop her, Senshi had taken control of my mouth.
"It's a kitsune ritual, you baka, a closely guarded secret in the race, and one I'm not going to lecture you about right now. Or is your nose so filled with the walking dead's scent that you can't smell the alterations in my and my kit's scents?"
^SENSHI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^
~What? It's the truth!!!~
"Why you little bitch!!!!!! And if it's such a big secret, how come you know!!!!!!!!!!" I looked at him sceptically.
^Sometimes you gotta wonder how he's survived this long without common sence,^
~I think his Daddy's oversized tooth is to blame for that,~ Shippo snickered at the rather accurate desription of Tetsusiaga.
Without answering, I turned around and walked towards Kaede's village. InuYasha `feh'ed before following me.
"Kagome-chan!!!" Sango yelled, running out to meet me. I smiled.
"Sango-chan!" I said, hugging her as she met me, "How goes everything?"
"Alright. Miroku's out cold for groping a girl who was feeding chickens, InuYasha and Kouga got into anouther fight the other day and there haven't been any signs of jewel shards or Naraku."
~Jeeze, that's alright?!~ Senshi grumbed in my head, ~I'd hate to see bad.~ I mentally nodded.
^I hope Kouga still isn't close by…^
~If you'd just-!~
^No, Senshi. Wolf mating laws aren't like kitsunes. I can't just proclaim a mating match and be done with him. Besides, what if one of the others know about kitsune breeding traditions? That would cause more questions then we want to answer.^ Senshi grumbled.
~Well, you could still just purify him. Let's see him try to call us `his woman' then!~ I nearly rolled my eyes and Shippo smiled on my shoulder.
-I could scare him off for you, okaa-san,- he offered. I smiled at him. He was such a sweetie!
~Well, Kouga's more or less harmless anyways,~ Senshi said, also sending a smile in Shippo's direction, before letting it fade for an uncommonly sollem moment. ~That stuff about Naraku and the jewel has me worried, though.~ I frowned at that.
^Yeah. Whenever he leaves us alone, it doesn't mean anything good.^ I said, ^And no rumors of shards means the jewel's almost complete, and considering we don't have many shards…^
"Oh, there was one more thing. Sessho-maru was here right after you left." I jerked around to face Sango in shock.
~WHAT?!?!?!?!~
"WHAT?!?!?!?!" I shouted, repeating Senshi, "Sessho-maru?!?!"
"Yes. Oddest thing. He wasn't here for the Tetsusaiga, but to see you. He said he `required you aid,'"
"Me?" I repeated. A little worried and very confused. Senshi, on the other hand, was exstatic.
~Whadda know. Sessho-maru doesn't like ningens, so that he saught us out when he thinks that's what we are AND actually asked for our help is a high complement towards our power!~ Shippo seemed excited too.
"Yeah, Okaa-san, and he said he'd be coming back as soon as you returned." I glared at InuYasha.
"Ya know, a little warning would've been nice," I scolded him. He frowned.
"He was acting strange, and I didn't want you deciding to stay in your time till he got bored of waiting. We've got jewel shards to find, you know!"
^Translation, he wouldn't fight when InuYasha pulled out Tetsusiaga and he didn't want us abandoning him.^
~You mean YOU abandoning him,~ Senshi corrected, ~You're the one who got us into this mess, and if it were up to me, we would've just turned around and gone back home after the jewel broke and left it for the hanyous to bicker over.~
^I have my responsibilities as the jewel's protector, Senshi.^ I reminded my other half, ^I can't take a laize faire approch to this sort of thing. Besides, do you really want to give up on this hunt?^ Senshi was a warrior, and a huntress. I knew she'd never back down on such an interesting challenge. Even I caught some of her enthusiasm towards the hunt.
I knew, no matter how much Senshi pretended, she loved being here. We couldn't fight many youkai in our time, not with the Rekai watching everything, and so many humans that had long since forgotten the old ways. Even then, all youkai that escaped were usually weak ones who's only advantage was speed. Hardly worth our time.
Here, we could fight REAL youkai, that kill on a day-to-day basis, with power to give those weak excuses for demons death a hundred times over (Quite literally in Sessho-maru's case,) And are faced with puzzels that demand full attention in life or death situations.
Our skills as a fighter, miko, and kitsune have grown a lot because of our adventures, though we still mainly relied on the bow for both offence and defence, not wanting to explain our growing power to the others.
Shippo had actually found out about us by accident, almost a year ago. He smelt us using our kitsune magic and, excited at the prospect of another kitsune being in the immedeate area, had gone to investigate. I was forced to explain everything to him, and he assured me he wouldn't tell a soul, awed because of our power and proud that we'd trust him with such a big secret.
Miroku, I always suspected, knew something. It was something Senshi and I worried about at first, and was part of the reason we had invited him to join our quest so shortly after meeting him and right after he kidnapped, stole from, and groped us. Monks could sense that sort of thing in a person's aura. We're still not completely sure wether or not he knows, but if he does, we now trust he'll keep it to himself until we're ready to tell everyone. And it's obvious he trusts us, two auras or not.
Because of my miko aura, Kaede and Kikyou cannot feel Senshi. My powers surpass both of them, blocking out the demonic aura Senshi gave off. InuYasha could not smell Senshi on me because this body is very human, even if one of my souls is not, and because of his human blood, he cannot feel our auras.
Sango cannot feel my kitsune side because I never actually rely on her powers in battle, and that is the only time tajiya can sense youki. All the other demons we have faced off against have also been shielded away by one of these facts.
The only one who could have the power to see past any of these is Sessho-maru, who's taiyoukai blood would allow him to feel out any aura completely. Luckily, since I was a `weak ningen' he never payed me any mind, though there was a close call in InuTashio's grave.
~I still say the idea you came up with to distract him was pathetic.~ Senshi grumbled.
^Hey, it worked, didn't it?!^ I shot back, thinking back to that fateful day Tetsusiaga became InuYasha's prized possession.
---------------------------------------------FLASHBACK------ ---------------------------------------
"Goodbye" Sessho-maru said emotionlessly as his claws began their desent to InuYasha's throat. I froze for an millisecond, then started forward.
"InuYasha!" I yelled, starting toward the fighting brothers.
~Wait, Kagome, no!!! The sword-!!!~ but it was too late. Tetsusaiga easily slipped out of the stone pedastel, drawing all attention to me. Senshi sighed in my mind ~-needs a strong combination of human and demonic energy to come out. Which was why the inus couldn't do it.~ Crap.
"I'm sorry…" I said, watching my companion and his brother with fearful wariness. Only an idiot would consider a taiyoukai an easy opponent. (AN; *cough* InuYasha! *cough*) "It just slipped out," (AN; By the way, I've got the manga right in front of me while I'm typing this, and that's what I'm going off of, not the anime. So anyone who doesn't think this is the right dialong or thinks I left something out can kiss my-!!! Kagome; DREAMVIXEN!!!! DV; hehe…)
"T'isn't… `tisn't true!" Jaken babbled "If the great Lord Sessho-maru couldn't… if the flea-bitten InuYasha couldn't… how in the seven hells could she do it?!"
I bristled slightly at that insult, which went unnoticed by all but Sessho-maru. InuYasha had decided that the attention was on me for a little too long, and attacked Sessho-maru to keep me from getting killed or something.
"Never take your eyes off me!" InuYasha yelled out as he thrusted his claws into Sessho-maru throat.
Or, tried to, at least.
Sessho-maru was already gone, and right, and I mean RIGHT in front of me.
"You," he said softly as I gasped, by heart clenching in fear. There was no way he could mistake what I was at this distance! Our cover would be totally blown!!!
"Looks like you lord brother's lost intrest in you…" Myoga told InuYasha, as he rose again from his failed blow "Lucky for you!"
~We're killing him, right?~
^No.^
"Shut up, Bug!" InuYasha snapped, watching me and Sessho-maru.
"What are you…" Sessho-maru asked me, ignoring his brother and the cowardly flea, "…That you were able to draw the Tetsusaiga?" I felt my fear reach a new level with that question, moreso when I saw his ki start to flare to search mine. So, in a moment of complete and desparate stupidity, I did something completely desparate and, well, stupid.
"D-don't come any closer!" I told the taiyoukai, purpously falling back into a weak stance so not to draw more attention. "I'll slice you!" Senshi snorted in my head.
~Your making us look like idiots!~
^Would you rather end up working for Sessho-maru if he finds out what we are?^ I countered. Our powers were unique, and could out do nearly anything this era had to offer. And if he was the kind of demon I took him for, he'd have no problems using my `human weaknesses' to gain my assistance.
"Get away from her Sessho-maru!" InuYasha called out, taking a step towards us as Sessho-maru's ki filtered back into his body to be replaced with a different kind of energy, apparently convinced that only a human would say something so stupid, "She's not a part of this!"
"InuYasha!" I yelled again, for the sixth time that day. (AN; Hehe… I counted. Yes, that's how patheticly bored I get,) Partly from relief, and partly from fear.
"Alas, I'm afraid she is," Sessho-maru replied, "Merely be being your compainion." Suddenly, I was staring practically crosseyed at a claw right in front of my face. "My talons bid you… goodbye,"
Poison suddenly surrounded us, and I quickly threw some of my ki into the shield spell around the stupid sword that had gotten us into this mess, enhansing the spell enough to protect us, but not the bone we had been backed up against when Sessho-maru got it in his head to kill me.
"KAGOME!" InuYasha shouted. But that was already slightly muffled by the melted taiyoukai bone I suddenly found myself encased in…
------------------------------------------END FLASHBACK-----------------------------------------
~We were lucky that day,~ Senshi said, seriously, ~Everything could've been blown in that one second.~ I knew that was true. I didn't want my friends involved with the Reikai if they found out Senshi was still alive. So, I simply kept my powers hidden and my mouth shut.
I sighed inwardly as I felt Sessho-maru's ki approaching at a fast pace. Unless I was willing to reveal what I really was, I was stuck with talking to the taiyoukai.
~He's changed over the two years we've been here, Kagome,~ Senshi reminded me, ~His youki has become more tame, and he hasn't tried to kill InuYasha for a while. I'd say even if he bothers to find out, we'll be safe.~ Sessho-maru's almost silent footsteps ended a ways off behind me. I sighed, this time outloud, sure no one would catch it.
"Miko," [Author ID1: at Sun May 23 17:59:00 2004 ]Sessho-maru said in his emotionless tone, "This Sessho-maru requires your aid in aid in a task," I turned to face him.
"What the hell do you need Kagome for?!" InuYasha demanded, a slight possesive edge in his voice.
"It's alright, InuYasha," I said, smiling at him reassuringly before turning back to Sessho-maru. "I take it you want to hold this conversation in private?" Sessho-maru gave a short nod, and we started into the forest, InuYasha and the others looking on anxiously. I turned to Sessho-maru as soon as we were far enough away for even InuYasha not to hear a word. "So, why do you need my help?" Sessho-maru wasted no time getting to the point.
"A powerful deity named Enma has approached me with a plan to separate the youkai and ningen races into separate relms. In order for it to work, three separate powers are needed. The strongest deity, the strongest youkai, and the strongest ningen. Enma and I will take our places for the first two, and you are needed for the last." I stared at him.
~Told you it was a complement to our powers.~ Senshi said smugly.
^Yes, but do you realize what he's asking us to do?^ I said, still not completely comprehending things myself.
~Create the three realms.~ Senshoi said as if such a thing was asked of a person every day. I nearly shook my head.
^Exactly! Plus, there are so many things that can go wrong if I was really the one to make the relms! I'm not completely human, I have my responsibility to the jewel… what are we supposed to do if Naraku's sent to the Makai and we're stuck in the Ningenkai with an incomplete jewel?! And Kikyou-!^
~Calm down, it's not the end if the world!~
^You do realize the irony of that statement, don't you?^
~Shut up. Look, You have strong miko powers and spirit energy without my youki, so all I have to do is sit back and watch. Tell them you won't help until the jewel is complete and we'll probably sit down and talk to both Enma and Sessho-maru before the barrier is made.~ then Senshi paused, ~Odd, though, they never mentioned anything about us or Sessho-maru when they speak of the barrier's creation…~
^Bigger things to worry about.^ I reminded her impateintly, looking into Sessho-maru's eyes.
"There are too many holes in this plan as is. I will consider it after we defeat Naraku and restore the Shikon no Tama, but even then, this needs to be gone over more thuroughly." Sessho-maru stared at me for a moment and, before I could think of doing anything to stop him, sent out his ki to feel me out. His eyes widened at what he found.
"What are you?" He demanded, not exactly sharply, but with enough edge to make me wince. I sighed.
"We are the result of miko and kitsune souls sharing a single body. My kitsune side wasn't supposed to be reborn within me, you see, so all anyone sees or smells is the miko."
"InuYasha doesn't know," It was a statement, not a question. And I allowed Senshi to take both the eyes and the mouth to respond.
"There is a lot the hanyou is ignorant about," Sessho-maru chuckled.
"Have you allowed the miko to use the kitsune powers at anytime during your journies?" Senshi shook our head.
"A little for fun or relaxation. Not in any battles. I thought it would be better training for us to use her powers, not rely on the power and knowledge gained by my own training." Sessho-maru nodded.
"Do any of your companions have knowledge of your other side?"
"The kit, and we've suspected the monk of knowing something. The others are clueless. There is only one among our family at our true home that know of my existance."
"Why have you joined with a human?" I felt my lips turn up into a scowl, brushing danty fangs along the way.
"Revenge." I tried to block out the million dark thoughts Senshi had swirling in our mind. Sessho-maru nodded, apparently satisfied with his interrogation of Senshi.
"I will return for you when the hanyou dies. We will hold a conference with Enma so you can express your conserns." And with that, Sessho-maru turned and started away. I sighed as Senshi relinquished my body to me, and started back to the village to face the undoubtably brooding hanyou and curious friends waiting there. I couldn't help but notice Sessho-maru hadn't specified on which hanyou he was waiting on to die…
---------------------------------------TWO WEEKS LATER----------------------------------------
I looked briefly at the carnage around us, and then to the opponents we had left. Naraku laughed coldly as InuYasha struggled to his feet. Sango rested against a tree a little off in the distance, barely alive after fighting Kohaku, who layed next to her, dead. Miroku was struggling to remain consious after sucking up poisonous insects to keep Demons from attacking the injured InuYasha. Shippo we had forced to stay at Kaede's hut a little while off, determinded not to have our kit in harms way.
Kagura gave me a brief, concerned look before allowing her face to settle into a smirk when Naraku turned her way.
"Kagura, finish off the monk and tajiya. Kanna, retrieve the jewel shard in the tajiya boy's back and drain the hanyou of his soul. I will take the miko back to the castle so we can get… better acquainted." I didn't bother to hide the shutter of absolute disgust that ran through my body.
"Yes, Master Naraku," She spared me another look, begging me to come up with a plan to get her out of carrying out that order. Luckily, one hit me.
^Kagura,^ I said urgently in her mind, ^I have an idea, but I need you to trust me. Start heading towards Miroku and whatever you do, don't pull anything that I don't signal you to do. And you need to act convincing.^ Kagura gave the barest of nods and started towards Miroku, drawing her fan out of her sleeve.
"Die, Monk!" She yelled. I aimed an arrow at her and let it fly. When it struck, she screamed as if hell itself was burning her alive before seemingly melting away into nothingness. I then turned an arrow to Kanna to repeat the process. Naraku growled in anger.
"Wretched miko!" He hissed, "Perhaps you should learn your place." Thn, he shot something at me. I braced myself for the impact of a physical blow, but received a hit I wasn't expecting.
Instead of tearing through my body, the blast attacked my soul, making me scream and writhe in pain.
^SENSHI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^ I yelled, barely having the consentration to do that in my own head while bearing the attack, ^HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!^
~Right, hang on, hang on…~ By I didn't have enough time to hang on, the pain was growing. If it kept this up, it would tear my soul apart, so I couldn't even enter the afterlife. ~Kami… I'm sorry, Kagome.~ That was the last thing I heard before blacking out, an orange glow enveloping my body before I did.
