The boys were sparring out back when Kagome and the others touched down, but they continued with what they were doing as she made her way inside to check on the ice maiden. They did, however, take notice of the three little inu-youkai children that were starting to play a game of hide and seek with Souta. They also noticed that the fox demon had also showed up with the young woman and was watching as the children easily hid from the boy. He even yelled out a few pointers to both sides of the little game as he relaxed on a tree branch while keeping them all within sight.

It was a little while later that Kagome exited the house and leapt up into the tree that the kitsune resided in. She was quite agile for a human, but that shouldn’t be too surprising after witnessing her display the day previous. Hiei and Kurama both looked to Yusuke as the girl curled up against the demon, but he made no sign of noticing this as he continued his spar with Kuwabara.

In the tree Kagome curled against her kit as she looked up at him, “so what did you want to talk to me about sweetie?”

“Well mom, I want to start by reminding you that I am over five hundred years old…” Her eyes widened slightly as she realized where the conversation might be going. “And well… I think I’m old enough to and I’d really like your permission to well… Iwannatakeamate.”

A giggle left her lips at that as she enveloped her kit in her arms, “and who’s the lucky lady?”

“Souten…” he said somewhat meekly.

“When’s the mating ceremony? How long have you two been courting?  When can I expect grandkits?”

Emerald eyes widened to the size of saucers at all of the questions before he began choking as the last question spewed from her lips. Finally he composed himself and looked at her, “I don’t know, when can I expect siblings?”

The girl turned bright red and looked over at Yusuke with a slight smile as she answered her son, “I’m not sure, I don’t think our relationship is quite to that level yet.”

Surprise passed through the demon’s eyes as they took in the look on his mother’s face. She seemed happy and nearly excited at the thought of bearing young for the mazoku demon. “Do you want it to be at that level?”

The question was soft, but the curiosity could easily be heard in his voice. “I.. I’m… I don’t know.”

“It’s alright mom, you’re allowed to be happy too, you know.”

“I know Shippo, but I don’t want him to regret his decision to be with me. I want him to make that choice on his own.”

“Then tell him what you want and let him make his choice.”

“But everything that’s going on now, how do you expect me to ask him to mate when the future is once again uncertain?”

“What was it you once said to Sango and Miroku? Wasn’t it that to spend a little time with the one you love is better than to be left wondering what it would have been like to have that moment?”

“When did you get so smart Shippo?” Kagome asked as she smiled a sad smile at him.

“My mom taught me everything I know,” he said with a slight smile as he hugged her closer. “Now how about we have that little spar you promised me?”

“Alright,” she said with a smile as she rose to her feet and leapt down to the ground. “I suppose you do need to prove to someone that you’re capable of taking care of little Souten.”

“I guess that means you’re not gonna go easy on me, doesn’t it?” he asked as he shifted into his demonic form. Nine tails easily stretched out behind him as his hand reached for the demonic fang that hung at his side.

Kagome likewise reached for the blades that hung from her bracelet. Both blades were similar, yet they were obviously very different and the kitsune gulped upon seeing them. “Now why would I take it easy when you’re planning to take a mate and need to be properly tested for the rights to the female.”

Each got into position before suddenly they were off and their blades were clashing. The group of boys and even the children paused to watch the battle. Genkai and Yukina also made their way to the back porch in order to see what was going on. Sounds of steel against steel rang throughout the grounds as their blades continued to meet at a speed too fast for normal people and even some demons to see. As the two paused Shippo was panting slightly while blood slowly flowed from an open wound on his arm.

“I suppose you’re not as rusty as I might have thought.”

“Awaken Kyo Kami, Gouka…”

“Shit!” the demon yelled before disappearing and reappearing behind Kagome and unsheathing his sword. A giant fang appeared and he swung downward only to be blocked by Kagome.

“Too slow little kit,” Kagome said softly as she swung Gouka at his midsection. He dodged back and she charged forward, this time striking out with Kyo Kami. He blocked and dodged her next stroke with her other sword before swinging his blade at her neck. She blocked and aimed another strike at him. “You need to do better than that little kit.”

His eyes widened as he summoned and surrounded himself in foxfire just as she unleashed a wave of black flames at him. When he emerged his clothing was smoking and his fur was slightly singed. “Using the flames of hell is soo not fair!”

Her eyes flashed, “all’s fair in love and war… this happens to be both.”

“Fuck…” he managed to get out just as her next attack struck him head on with no way to dodge or escape. After the dust from the attack cleared he could be seen barely standing with blood covering his form. “I’m not done yet…”

“But you are,” she murmured as she appeared behind him with her sword at his throat, “though I suppose you have at least earned your rights.”

“Good… Souten would be… pissed at me if… I fai…” and he passed out as she quickly put away her swords and caught the boy’s falling weight. Healing energy began encasing her hands as she gently laid him down while resting his head on her lap.

A soft smile touched her lips as she gently brushed his bangs from his face while looking upon him with obvious love. Her little kit was finally going to settle down and hopefully he would give her plenty of little grandkits to spoil. She picked him up into her arms with an ease that surprised the surrounding audience before she gracefully leapt up into a tree and rested him against the trunk, blood free and completely healed.

Kurama was standing at the base of the tree when she dropped back down, Hiei was near him and Yusuke had returned to his sparring match with Kuwabara. The children had also returned to their little game of hide-n-seek. The avatar had a bit of a stern look on his face as she faced him and mentally she had to smile as she saw a flicker of cold golden eyes appear where neutral green normally showed.

“Is there something that I can help you with Kurama?” she asked sweetly with a hint of steel in her voice and power flickering in her eyes.

Kurama obviously noticed the threat as he paused for a moment and debated on his course of action before continuing. It appeared that even Hiei seemed to pause in his own thoughts at the not so veiled threat held within the petite woman’s innocent question. The avatar had apparently decided on what action to take as he reclaimed his cold stance while looking at her. “You seem awfully close to that kitsune when you’re supposed to be dating Yusuke; I just want you to know that we all have powerful friends, none of which would appreciate knowing that you’ve hurt him in any way.”

A cold smile touched her reddened lips as she appraised the avatar for a moment before taking a small step forward and using her aura to press against his. Within seconds he had dropped to his knees gasping for breath, then Hiei attempted to interfere and he too dropped down to a knee. A gasp alerted Kagome that the ice maiden had noticed the smothered auras of the two demons now kneeling at her feet.

“I should warn you that while I myself have powerful allies that would tear you apart if I said the word, I have no need to rely on said allies to take on all of you and even all of your friends. My past is none of your business and you should back off on what is between Yusuke and I, though I will give you credit for having the guts to stand up  for your friend.”

As she turned and walked away the pressure faded and the two demons gasped for breath and Yukina had finally made it to them, though they both claimed to be fine. Yusuke and a beat up looking Kuwabara also went to their side, though the former had slight amusement in his eyes. “I’m not sure what you said to her, but I can definitely tell that you pissed her off.”

“We simply asked about her relationship with the kitsune,” Kurama said smoothly as he rose to his feet, finally able to breathe freely.

“I’m sure there’s more to it than that Kurama, especially since she suppressed your auras the way she did.” Yusuke was looking at him as if he knew something about the little confrontation. There was a bit of a hard edge to his voice when he spoke next. “I should also remind you that I’m also a demon and I have better hearing than you think and I agree with what she said, you should stay out of matters that don’t concern you.”

The mazoku turned away from the group and went after his girlfriend whom was now watching as the children easily hid from her brother. Souta was actually quite annoyed at his lack of success when it came to finding them, a task he had failed at since Shippo had quit calling out pointers to him. Kagome approached him silently and tapped his shoulder gently causing him to jump. “You’re too tense. The more stressed your body the harder it is to feel your surroundings. You need to relax and let  go of everything, the annoyance, the anger, and the disappointment. Once you do that close your eyes and let your aura become one with everything around you, don’t just feel what’s around you become what’s around you. Make it a part of yourself.”

“I’ll try,” he said softly as he closed his eyes and his body slowly started to relax. As the tension eased from him a peaceful smile slowly lit his face. “I can feel it; I can see you standing there.”

His words were spoken with excitement as his eyes remained closed. “Good, now find the children.”

This time when he looked he actually found them in their hiding spots and they cheered along with him at his success. They tried several more times, not always with the greatest results and always with his eyes closed. When he tried with his eyes open he couldn’t see their auras at all and failed to find them. “I don’t understand why I simply can’t do this while my eyes are open.”

“You’re letting your senses be overridden by what you see with your eyes; you must learn to see with all of your senses in order to move on in your training. You should have father help you when you’re at home.”

It was later that evening when Botan appeared in Yusuke’s living room, a slight glare on her face. It was obvious to Kagome that she was jealous, but all that the mazoku cared about was that obviously there was a new mission from Koenma. The ferry girl opened a portal for him and closed it behind him, opting to remain behind and “speak” with the new woman in Yusuke’s life. “I know that you’re only after him for his power, so I’m warning you now… back off.”

A small smile touched the miko’s lips as she rose to her feet and allowed her energy to swirl dangerously around her body and yet it wasn’t detectable. “You’re warning me, are you, Lady Death? And what will you do if I refuse? I know your little threat has more to do with the fact that you like him more than what you think I’m after and what I want with him.”

“I’m not a weak human like I’m sure you’re used to dealing with, though I know you’re capable of healing others I doubt your power is any more than that.”

The cocky look being directed her way irritated her to no end, not to mention that this was the second person basically questions her motives in her choice of boyfriend. A cold light danced in her eyes as a sudden darkness encased the two beings and Botan began to look around in worry as the priestess advanced to her. “I’m normally a very patient woman, but lately I’ve been a little out of it due to recent and some not so recent events; therefore you’ll find I may be a little harsh in some of my reactions when normally I’d shrug such comments off….”

The darkness in the room was beginning to constrict the closer the young woman drew to the reaper and now Botan looked around in fear as no visible light appeared save for the light that seemed to shine from the miko. Indeed the death reaper couldn’t even see her own hands or even create a portal in order to escape. “What are you doing to me? How are you doing this?”

“You’ll find my powers are more than what most would give me credit for, and this is but a show of how helpless you are before me should I choose to do anything against you. I know your aura, your scent, and your appearance, should I wish I could easily find you no matter where you hide and eliminate you if I feel you become a threat to me or mine.” By this point Kagome stood directly before the reaper with a look as cold as Sesshoumaru’s lighting her face. She stretched her hand out and merely touched the reaper who began to scream in agony before she let go and watched as the other woman grasped at her now injured arm. “Be careful next time, if you were not a friend of Yusuke’s it would have been much worse than it was.”

Her back turned on the blue haired woman and the darkness lifted as Botan dropped to her knees. No noticeable signs of damage were on her arm, but tears still streamed like rivers down her face as she shakily rose back up to stand. “You’re a monster… not even human.”

“You threatened me; I merely acted to instill fear before you tried something I’d have to kill you for. Now leave before I decide to do so anyway.”

The reaper opened a portal and vanished on the spot as a single tear fell from Kagome’s face as her eyes shifted to more of light grey instead of the near steel color they were a moment before. Her life in the Feudal Era had toughened her, but she still hated resorting to threats, especially when they were directed at a person she knew.

Just so you all know, I do happen to have this story finished and I hope to have it all up soon. I’ve just recently been able to sit down and begin working on my stories once more.
