Chapter Six -- Out of the Maze
As the hours passed, Yusuke found himself developing a growing respect for his employer. As she wandered in the imaginary labyrinth, she would sometimes talk to herself and from those ramblings, Yusuke gathered that she had a fear of being alone but that she kept moving, searching for an end to a maze that wasn't there. She would sing to herself sometimes, others she would stop and sit on the floor for a few minutes, hugging her knees to her chest, rocking back and forth. Sometimes she called out for him, expressed her worry for him. At those times Nakago would turn to him with a smile but Yusuke would quickly look away, finding the ceiling tiles very interesting. After several more hours, Yusuke felt his eyes become heavy with sleep and soon his chin fell slowly to his chest and the young bodyguard slept.
Yusuke was awaken by a scream. His eyes flew open and he looked to the screen seeing Akari backed into a corner. "Bugs...why bugs?" her voice came from the speakers. 'Guess she doesn't like bugs,' he thought.
"Leave her alone damn it!" Yusuke blurted. Again Nakago looked at him with that knowing smile.
The lights in the room Akari was in flickered. She yelped again, looking up at the ceiling. "Oh god, no...please no...not the lights too." Yusuke watched as she held her head in her hands. Why were they doing this to her? He might not like her but she didn't deserve this.
More hours passed, the lights in that room continued to flicker. Yusuke could tell that Akari was losing whatever control she had once possessed. Her voiced conversations were becoming less and less intelligable. Finally the lights went out and Akari screamed again. The utter terror held in that scream made his blood run like ice. He tried again to free himself from the cuffs. He heard the door open and the guy with the brown hair came in again, through Nakago's and Naraku's conversations he had learned that this was Seto Kaiba. "Her times up, have your man end the illusion."
Without waiting for an answer Seto sweapt out of the room. The lights in the room, Akari was being held in came on. Yusuke's eyes narrowed when he saw her huddled in a corner, arms wrapped around her knees, head down, hair covering her face. Seto soon appeared on the screen and stood for a long moment, looking down at her.
Nakago moved blocking his view of the monitor. Yusuke glared at him. "Still don't care what happens to her Yusuke?"
"Unlock these," he replied, rattling the handcuffs, "and I'll show you." Yusuke hated to admit it but he was beginning to rethink his feelings toward Akari.
Nakago smiled, "You'd like that wouldn't you Yusuke."
"You're damn right I would." Seto came back, eyes narrowed and angry.
"What did you do to her?" he demanded.
Naraku stepped up, "We are preparing her to aquiesce to your wishes Seto. We are doing only what you have asked of us."
Yusuke watched as a emotion flickered across Seto's face but he could not identify it. "From what I can gather from her babblings, she still will not sign the papers."
Nakago stepped up to Seto, "Well then Seto Kaiba, you will have to allow us to do things our way. Go back to your office and play with your games. We will call you when she is ready to sign the papers."
Yusuke watched the silent power struggle between the two men. He was disappointed when Seto nodded once and left the room. Nakago's smile grew, "Naraku...go bring Akari here. You've gotten your wish."
"Haven't you done enough, damn you?"
"Oh no, Yusuke, I have only just begun."
