The next morning they all woke up with the sun. All except Kuwabara that is who was still sleeping and mumbling about kittens. Kurama woke up to find the fox still there sitting in front of him staring at him with crimson eyes.
“Well good morning there. I thought you would have left us by now.” The fox shook its head almost like it understood what he was saying before scratching behind her left ear.
Kurama got up moving to pass out some of the left over rabbit to the others keeping a small portion for the fox that sat by his side. She ate the scraps of rabbit meat that he placed in front of her.
As they erased all signs of their camp mainly due to Kurama the fox stood off to the side slightly almost as if she was waiting for them. They headed off with the fox trailing along limping a bit still as she tried to keep pace with Kurama. With a sigh he reached down to pick up the fox wrapping her in his arms. She snuggled into his arms a bit and looked around at all the other members.
Kuwabara saw the fox in Kurama’s arms and moved over to him. “Hey do you think I can hold the little fox?” He reached out to take the fox earning a growl and snap from her. Kuwabara yelped and jumped back away from them earning a laugh from Yusuke.
“I think I like that thing. It has pretty good taste.”
“Hey Urameshi that’s not fair, I’ll have you know that animals love me.”
“Only ones that don’t have any taste.” Yusuke said with another laugh looking back at the fox who was content in Kurama’s arms. “Looks like someone really likes you Kurama.”
“Yes it does seem that she has become quite attached to me Yusuke.” He said as he looked down at the fox.
A few hours after noon they came upon the walls of a village. They were wood like an ancient village not one that belonged in modern Japan. A man looked over the wall yelling at them. “Hey who goes there?”
“We’re here to pick up something for Koenma.” Yusuke yelled back to him.
The man quickly looked over the group spotting the fox in Kurama’s arms. He said something to the others and the gate slowly opened. The group slowly walked into the village everyone on edge as they went into the gate.
The gate shut behind them sending Hiei’s hand onto his sword as he looked around suspiciously. Everyone put their backs to each other so they couldn’t be snuck up on. Kurama gently put the fox down behind him so she would be protected in case of an attack.
An older man walked over to them coming to stand in front of Kurama. “There is no need to be so defensive. We mean you no harm, especially with how you have cared for Natsu there.” The man spoke nodding towards the fox, who slowly walked out of the protective circle.
She slowly limped up to the man that picked her up when she reached him. She yipped in his ear lightly and the boys looked at the pair curiously.
“Now I heard that you were looking for something for Koenma correct?” The man asked. At Yusuke’s nod he put Natsu down. “Well then you already have what you were sent here to find.”
“So this fox Natsu, is she yours?” Kurama asked the man.
The man laughed and shook his head. “No she is not mine, not at all she belongs to herself and nothing else. She is what you seek though I do not know what Koenma wants with her.”
Natsu growled slightly though she moved over to sit down next to Kurama’s feet earning another laugh from the man. “It seems that Natsu has taken a liking to you. You will have your hands quite full with her I assure you.”
Kurama looked down at the fox that only came up to his knee while sitting. “I would expect no less from a fox.”
Yusuke pulled out his communicator and opened it up to call Koenma. “Yo Toddler, we got the fox you sent us for now can we finish this fucking mission so I can get home.”
“Yes of course just let me send Botan to open a portal back here to Spirit World.” With that Yusuke shut the communicator and put it back in his pocket.
Botan quickly appeared with a swirling portal ushering them all inside. Natsu turned up to Kurama before using her hind legs to jump up into his arms. He instinctively caught her and gave a soft smile as he stroked her silky fur while walking into the portal behind everyone else.
On the other side they came out in Koenma’s office. Natsu looked around before leaping from Kurama’s arms to land gently on the desk. She was careful of her injured leg as she sat on the desk and looked at Koenma.
“It’s good to see you Natsu. Though I wish you wouldn’t appear like that it’s a bit unnerving.”
Natsu only stared at him and blinked once almost like she didn’t understand what he was saying or didn’t care. Koenma was just about to say something else when Kurama interrupted.
“Excuse me Koenma but do you mean to say that she has more than this form?”
“Well of course she does, she has a few forms but unfortunately prefers to be in this one though I can’t understand why.” Koenma screamed as Natsu casually lashed out with razor sharp claws nearly catching him with them.
“Now please Natsu, I didn’t mean anything by it. I just need you to help my team here with a mission.”
The fox sighed softly her head tilting to the side. Slowly shadows moved to encase the fox and grew steadily. The boys were slightly alarmed when the shadows formed but none of them could do anything.
When the shadows faded a young woman sat on the desk where the fox was. She had long dark grey hair that flowed down to her mid thigh with a pair of ears a few shades darker than her hair with white tips and a matching tail. She wore a white gauzy dress that had one shoulder on the left held up by a large gold collar and dipped low on the right revealing black wrappings around her chest. The dress went down nearly to her ankles with a slit all the way up to her right hip where a wide black belt was and showed a pair of tight black shorts beneath the dress. She had no shoes and looked over her shoulder at the group behind her giving a slight smile that revealed a fang. There was a large cut on her arm just where the fox had been injured further proving that it was the same being from before.
“Hello boys.” She said before looking back to Koenma.
Kuwabara had extra wide eyes and was staring at Natsu with his mouth dangling open. Yusuke wasn’t in much better condition though he managed not to look like a complete fool. The expression on Hiei’s face never changed much though his eyes did widen slightly while Kurama looked rather shocked having not expected such a transformation.
“So what in all the blasted hells do you need my help with Koenma? You have a group of strong demons and strong human, why would you need to drag me out of hiding?” Natsu asked in a slightly cold voice.
Koenma shifted in his chair as Natsu narrowed her steel grey eyes at him. “Uhm well there has been some odd gathering of demons in the Makai near the border to the human world and we need you to help figure out what’s going on and to stop it.”
“So it’s not really me that you need but the powers of my kind and since I am one of the only remaining members you pulled me out of hiding.”
“You also have certain training that I believe will be quite helpful as well Natsu.”
Natsu shook her head slightly before standing up turning to face the group behind her that had gained their composure.
“Tell me where these demons have gathered and I will help discover what they are doing. Now if I do this for you, you will leave me alone forever. Do you understand me Koenma? Because if you do not then I will not hesitate to turn the same skills which you want for this mission on you.” Natsu’s voice grew even colder as she spoke looking back at Koenma.
Koenma nodded quickly before hitting some buttons on his remote. “This is where the demons are gathering.”
A picture of a large cave in a mountain showed on the TV. Natsu nodded slightly though her face was grim.
“Wonderful, well let’s get this over with. Stay with me how we will travel isn’t safe, and when we get there I will go in and see what is going on. I do not need your help, not for this part anyway.” Natsu spoke with the same cold voice that she used with Koenma before turning and walking into a shadow vanishing into it.
Her head poked out of the shadow to look at them. “Well are you four coming or are you to afraid to travel through the shadow realm.”
The boys slowly followed her into the shadow and passed through to the shadow realm. The shadow realm looked just like the forests of Makai and human world had combined but everything was bathed in twilight and the colors slightly muted.
They walked along the forest Natsu leading them till they got to an incredibly large tree. “Here is where we will pass back into Makai, into a forest near by the cave.”
She walked through the tree and the group followed her though Kuwabara was quite hesitant. They came out in the shadow of an identical tree to the one in the shadow realm. Natsu checked that they all made it before swiftly moving into her small fox form. She quickly darted out of the forest heading for the cave.
“Hey we gotta follow her!” Kuwabara yelled as Yusuke jumped on him covering his mouth with a hand.
“You idiot shut up. Do you want all the demons to know that we are here you fucking idiot.” Yusuke whispered to him before letting go roughly.
“We must go after her but we also must be careful there are huge amounts of demon energy coming from that cavern.” Kurama said before darting towards the cave just behind Hiei. The others quickly followed with Kuwabara bringing up the rear.
