Chapter 7: Night Breeds

The sun rose above the horizon slowly, feeling the immense weight of everything that had been happening. Yusuke sat in the kitchen with Keiko and Genkai; the only two up this early and still in the house. All three were quite and pensive about the last couple nights. On the quest to figure out how to cure Sayuri's pain, they had stumbled upon an ancient curse passed on for generations. The detective looked down at his mug of coffee Keiko had made and thought deeply. The only known way to get rid of the curse for a short time is for the carrier to take a mate or spouse.
`She's only 17! You have got to be kidding, Yusuke you idiot!!' Yusuke thought to himself as Keiko took his full glass and put it on the counter. She knew he didn't actually like the coffee, he just preferred something to hold on to when thinking.
`What is going to happen to Sayuri? I can't imagine this all falling into place right now… It's been hard enough for Yusuke when… well… when word about that demon Yukio hurting Sayuri came in… but now she's in more trouble. It just feels too complicated for the moment.' Keiko thought. She still had no idea where Yusuke kept disappearing to at night. He left the temple and normally didn't come back for 4 to 5 hours during the night.
“Good morning…” A voice as a figure appeared at the door frame. Yusuke turned around and saw Sayuri standing in the door-way, dressed in a long blue sweater and tan shorts. She looked healthier, a certain glow coming from her smiling face. Sayuri's black-violet hair fell loosely down her back, a matching blue head band framing her face. She walked into the kitchen and sat at the table next to Yusuke and Genkai. Both looked at her gently, not sure what an appropriate response would be.
“Good morning to you too. How are you feeling?” Genkai asked the young girl. She surveyed Sayuri, noticing the sweet expression that must be hiding all the pain. Sayuri kept smiling as Keiko gave her a bowl of cereal and sat down at the table too.
“I'm okay. Everything is all healed and I'm ready to get back to school,” Sayuri stopped, remembering how her last school day ended with Shuichi saving her. She still hadn't found out who the “Kurama” character was that saved her that night, but she was positive that he was a demon, and that in due time he would appear at the temple.
“Mr. Watanabe left the school. I suppose he was taking a permanent vacation.” Kurama chimed in as he entered the kitchen with Hiei following behind him. Kurama smiled at Sayuri, who smiled sheepishly back at him. She hadn't forgotten that she owed him a lot of thanks for helping her out. Now that she could go back to school, she promised that she would work harder and actually try.
“Uhmm… Genkai…” Sayuri asked quietly. Genkai looked up at her from her cup of coffee. The girl's face was sparkling and it drew her in, making her forget about all the horrible things that befell the girl just days before.
“Yes, Sayuri?” Genkai responded gently, trying to sound like nothing was amiss. Sayuri paused for a moment and looked at everyone around the room. She wanted nothing more than to see them for all time.
“Is… Uhm…Is your offer still valid? I, I don't have anywhere to go, and your hospitality…Can I stay here with you?” Sayuri finally spit it all out, letting everyone know for the first time in a long time just what SHE wanted. Genkai nodded and Sayuri smiled graciously. She had a new home and it seemed like she would finally be safe with these people. Yusuke looked over to Sayuri and smiled at her. It was nice to see her so happy and recovering so fast. He envied how strong she was; never letting things break her down. Sayuri laughed out loud and took a deep breath.
`A new home. A safe one too! Mom, Dad, I've found someone who is going to help me and not hurt me. You'll be really proud. I promise.' Sayuri thought as she practically skipped out of the room and down the hall. The rest of the gang looked around and waited for someone to break the ice first.
“Who is going to tell her? We can't let her just go running into who ever!” Yusuke demanded. His hands were clenched into fists on the tables, just waiting to bash someone's face in. Genkai nodded and thought for a moment.
“Yusuke is right for a change. Sayuri is in trouble and doesn't know the full extent of it. Hiei,” Genkai paused and Hiei looked at her surprised. “You have to watch over her. She's going to need someone's protection and since you two have a bond that won't seem to break, you need to keep an eye on her.” Genkai pressed. The Jaganshi snorted and stood up, walking out of the room. Yusuke looked at Kurama to talk some sense into him before Yusuke took it upon himself to use his fists to make Hiei listen.
{Hiei, she's serious.}
{I know, fox.}
Hiei walked down the hall to where the girl's room was. He knocked on the door like Kurama had told him to do when entering a girl's room because they were all about privacy. The door opened and Hiei saw Sayuri on the floor, grabbing her chest in pain. The closer he got to her, the more his own chest hurt, like the two bodies were sharing the pain.
{Fox, something's wrong.}
{I'm coming…}
Kurama ran into the bedroom and noticed both Hiei and Sayuri on the floor, clutching their chests. Sayuri lay on the floor, eyes a deep shade of magenta. Hiei was kneeling and checking to make sure that she was alive.
“She is a tracking device.” Kurama said shocked. He never expected a human to be an actual tracking device. It seemed that when Sayuri and Hiei switched memories, they both became a part of the tracking system. Kurama tilted Sayuri up a bit and placed his hand on her chest, right where her own had been.
“Do something, fox. I am not an animal to be tracked.” Hiei growled. The stupid bond had obviously back fired, but he didn't think it was to this degree. When ever he and the girl were in closer range, he could know and sometimes feel what she was feeling. After all their memories were exchanged and the pain was gone, he had expected the bond to severe because he no longer was using his Jagan and the girl no longer had the ability to take new memories. But it didn't. It didn't break or severe.
“Ahhh, my fiancé…” A smooth voice sounded from the doorway. It was thick and rich, like dark chocolate, but dangerously soft. A black clad figure stood right inside the room, looking at Sayuri like she was a piece of meat.
“Samael.” Kurama pronounced. The man laughed a menacingly low laugh, like a bass turned up all the way; pulsating through Kurama's chest. Hiei stood up and stepped in front of Sayuri and Kurama, who was desperately trying to get the girl to awaken.
“Get out of my way. I've waited too long for anyone to delay me fur…” Samael stopped and waved his hand in the air. Sayuri's eyes changed back to violet and she started to move. “Hello my darling,” Samael sweetly seduced. Without warning he let out a low growl and looked from the hall way to the three in the room. “Seems we will meet some other time…” Samael said and then he was gone. Sayuri looked up at both of the boys, Hiei protecting her and Kurama trying to help her.
“SAYURI! KURAMA! HIEI!” Came the loud voices of Yusuke and Botan who rushed down the hall after feeling a dark energy. Sayuri looked at Kurama, who's eyes were a hint of golden amber, sparkling with malicious intent. Hiei sighed and stood far away from Sayuri, trying not to let her feel what was coursing through out his veins: jealously.
