Closer?

Hiei: What the hell do you mean by 'Closer?'

DarkWater:I'm gonna ignore that and do the disclaimer. Well, screw that. Kurama! Get your ass over here and do the disclaimer!

Kurama: *Runs over for fear of being hit* DarkWater doesn't own us and never will. All other disclaimers for the bands and music are in chapter one.

Hiei: Did you get a job yet?

DarkWater: Did YOU?

Hiei: Why should I?

DarkWater: Why should I? Besides, I've got a good job!

Kurama: And that would be?

DarkWater: Protecter of the bishonen! Aside from that, I'm a Kuwabaka basher! *Pulls out 4 ton mallet* And this is my official Kuwabaka bashing weapon! Here Hiei! *Throws giant mallet to Hiei* Give it a try!

Hiei: *Laughs evilly* I think I will. *Runs off to find Kuwabara*

Kurama: *Tries to slip away unnoticed*

DarkWater: Kurama! Get back here!

Kurama: *Freezes in mid-step*

DarkWater: If you leave my santuary, you'll be chased by more rabid fangirls than you could count in six lifetimes. And I'm talking about yoko lifetimes!

Kurama: *Sighs* Point taken.

DarkWater: On with the fic produced by my little 13-year-old mind!

'I'll just throw some more wood on the fire and sleep for a few hours.' Kairi stood up in the dim light of the fire she had made. She already had a pile of wood collected. So, she just threw a few more pieces on, making sparks dance in the air above. 'I know I need it. after these past few days in the Makai with no sleep.' She paused. A half-yell, moan, and a small 'thud'. 'None of my buisiness. But then, there's that smell....blood. I can't stand the smell of blood.' She sat with her back against a tree in an attempt for sleep. 'Wait, it smells farmiliar, but I can't put my finger on it.' She growled to herself. 'Curiosity overcomes sleep every time.' She ran away from the light and toward the sent, though, she could still see in the darkness. 'Interuptions. I am so sick of interuptions.' She paused, almost on top of it. She parted the last of the bushes that blocked her way. Blood everywhere. It covered the trees, ground, and surrounding area. "Holy hell! Hiei!" 'No wonder it was farmiliar.' He was barely conscious and unable to move as she picked him up. Good thing he was so light. That was a plus as she began back toward the firelight.
"Put....me down." Hiei whispered through gritted teeth.
"No."
"I'm....fine."
"Hiei no baka, you are not." He growled at her comment and barred his short fangs. "Hiei, you can't even stand, let alone try to hurt me." He wouldn't admit to it, but he couldn't move. Stupid careless. It was a stupid, careless mistake. Looking up at her, Hiei could have sworn it was Kurama carrying him. She was almost the same-thin build, and those emerald eyes. Only difference was her brown hair color and the fact that she was probably a full six inches shorter than him. He could see much, just blurs. He felt her sit him down and removed his shirt. "God....just try to hold still. This is going to sting." She backed off for a moment, but quickly returned. Sting?! Sting was the biggest understatement he had ever heard! Not only did it burn on his wound, the rest of his body got a wake up call as well. "Hiei," She brought something to his mouth. "bite down as hard as you like." He obeyed, guessing it was something hard. Whatever it was, he didn't care at this point. The burning finally subsided, but he didn't stop biting as hard as he could. It was relief from the pain-something else to focus on. He wasn't sure if he fell asleep at that point ot went unconscious, but everything went to black.

He woke up with the sun shining through the tree leaves, but he wasn't leaning against the tree. Whatever his teeth had dug into was on his chest now. He opened his eyes, trying to remember what happened. Kairi, that's what happened. He was leaning against her. Now, what had he been biting last night? The answer half-shocked him. Her, he'd been biting her wrist the entire night. Well, that explained the fresh blood on him. She didn't tend to it either. He'd probably fallen asleep on her, and she didn't want to wake him, so she stayed put.
"Feeling any better?" He hadn't realized she was awake yet. "Well?"
"Fine." he answered sleepily. "But, your wrist...."
"It's fine. I'm worried about you."
'She's worried about me?' he thought.
"Promise me you won't do anything stupid for a while."
"Hn."
"And now, we're even." She paused. "Can you stand?" She helped him get to his feet. Hiei was standing if barely. He fell back into her arms only seconds later. "That's alright." He couldn't protest as he was lifted into her arms once again. "But I won't just leave you here."
"Put me down."
"You really are stubborn. Anyone ever tell you that?"
"Hn." He was surprised that he didn't put up a fight to get free, but he watched her. His trust wasn't simply given out for a few good deeds.
"Ready?"
"Yes." She took off running, and he held on tight.
"I've got a cave a few miles from here. That'll be good enough." Hiei didn't pay much attention to his surroundings. That made time seem like nothing as they reached the cave. They entered the darkness, and she sat him up against a wall. "I've got a few lanterns around here....there!" She struck a match and lit the lantern, giving the cave a dim glow. Hiei continued to sit, painful as it was, until she spead a blanket for him. "Is that alright for you?"
"Fine."
"Good. Just try to take it easy. I'm going to change your bandages from last night." She brough her bag over to where Hiei was almost asleep.
"Just no more of whatever the hell you used last night."
"I won't." She started unwrapping the blood-stained cloth while speaking. "So, what were you doing with Minamino-san? Unless there's some demon side of him that I'm not aware of?"
"Perceptive."
"So I'm right?"
Hiei nodded weakly.
"Secret's safe with me. You don't have to worry about that."

Kairi's POV
I saw something in the little oh-so-ill-tempered one. No, it wasn't anything he looked too proud of. He always scowled at everything, and his expression was never relaxed. His eyes were always so narrow with anger or hate or something I couldn't grasp. But what the hell? We all have our fair share of stories to tell. I really don't think he enjoys my company, but I'd have to be a cruel, heartless bitch to leave him here, wouldn't ya think? I backed off as soon as I was finished. I could tell that he was asleep already. I wonder if he has very many friends. Guess I never did. After dad and sis died, I guess I haven't been my same fun-loving self. I may still do the same things, but it's a false laughing, smiling, loving. Mom's all I got left, but she'll be alone soon. I sighed. This was getting me no where with all my thoughts. Only one thing bothered me---I never cried. Mom said that I stood there the entire time with an odd look on my face. Not a single tear was shed by me, but everyone else made up for me in the amount of tissues in the garbage can. Wonder if he's got spots in his past that still hurt to think about. There's more than that, though. I sighed again. I'm not sure why. I just did. Now I could really tell that he was asleep. Finally, that angered look on his face was gone. It made him look better, more pleasant. That little demon had sharper teeth than I thought. Guess I didn't remember to tend to it. It'll be safer to move him back home tonight to avoid the rabid demons. Mom'll be working a double shift, sleeping at Uncle Dante's since he lives closer to her work, and going back to work another twelve-hour shift. Hiei should be alright by then.

Hiei woke up hours later. He really must have been tired, because he was in a different place-a room to be exact.
"Yes, Dante, I know.....I know I promised.....I know, but I was out." She must have been on the phone because there was no response as she spoke. "I can't.....because I have something more important to tend to..... Alright. Bye." There was s small 'click', indicating she had hung up the phone. "I wish Suiichi hadn't dropped off my school work. Now, let's see....carry the seven....that's 23....multiply that by 12....and that is....276. Then....multiply this....carry that....and my end answer is....3,248? Wait a minute, that can't be right. Screw it. I'll do this tomorrow morning before class. I'll just cram it in somehow." Hiei moved back at something in his face. All he saw was black, and all he felt was softness. He grabbed the little ball of softness and held it out in front of him. The solid black kitten looked straight at him and purred.
"Mrrrow!" It jumped back in his face and licked his cheek with its sandpaper tounge. "Mrrrow!"
"Nariko, come back in here before you wake the oh-so-ill-tempered one." Kairi called softly from the other room.
"Mrrrow!" Nariko jumped off of the bed and pranced out. Hiei stayed on his back and stared at the ceiling. He closed his eyes as he heard Kairi walk in.
"Sure is a heavy sleeper." The phone rang, and she turned to get it. "Moshi-Moshi?....Hi, Suiichi. Is there something I missed?.....Alright, nothing I can't handle....If it's really that important, then why don't you come here?.....I can't leave......because I'm taking care of the wounded 'Oh-So-Ill-Tempered One'.....Of course I mean Hiei....How bad? I think he should be fine in a few days.....Ummm....yeah...." She paused to slide the pile of books under the table. "It's all finished.....Okay, I'll be back tomorrow. Ja." She hung up the reciever and turned. "Hiei, just sit up already. I know you've been awake ever since I walked in." Hiei opened one eye to glare at her. "It's just that you've got that look back on your face."
Hiei simply gave his trademark "Hn." and rolled over.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine in a few days."

A few days passed, and Hiei was back to normal and out the window without words.

Weeks passed. Hiei kept going back to the bar that Kairi worked in with her uncle, but he wasn't sure why. He would just sit in the rafters and watch her, unnoticed. She never did notice him, either.

It was raining....correction....pouring down rain. Hiei was soaked all the way to the bone. He just sat watching Kairi do her homework like she did every night. Hiei was just waiting for her 'Kasaan to leave for work so he could get out of the rain. Out of the rain--that was his excuse, but this was the first time inside her house since he was injured. He always ended up at Kurama's when it rained like this.
"Bye, 'Kasaan!" Kairi yelled to her mother who was at the front door already.
"Okay, Kai. I'll see you in the morning. Love you."
"Love you, too." As soon as her Okasaan was out the door, Kairi put on her coat and headed out as well. At this rate, Hiei would stay soaked forever.
"So wet, so very wet....." Kairi muttered, running down the sidewalk. Well, Hiei could still sit inside if her wondow was open. He checked. Sure enough, it was unlocked. He climbed inside to get a better look at everything. He walked over to her desk to see what she'd been doing. It wasn't homework, though. He turned the book over and looked at the cover. It read, "Stay out of my stuff". That only made him want to read it more. He opened it back up to where it was book-marked and read to himself.

October 17 (A/N: Can I dedicate this? Oh well if I can't! Shelly, it's for u!)
Raining....again. Go figure. Kasaan's working tonight....again. I'm going to Uncle Dante's....again. I just have to give him the key. School was the same, boring thing....again. When am I going to get a vacation? Suiichi's stopped by a few times. He says he hasn't heard anything from Hiei for a while and is getting a bit worried. I haven't seen him either. I wonder if he's okay. Probably hates me for taking care of him, too. I think that's why I haven't seen him. Anyway, on to other business! Alright, Dante and mom said they'd both pitch together some money so I can finally go back to the U.S! Mostly Hawaii. It's just a vacation, but I still get to visit! Two weeks is enough time. Don't you think?

Hiei turned back a few pages.

October 5
Haven't written for a while. Sorry, but I'm still worried about Hiei. He wasn't completely healed when he left. I really don't expect him to come back. Why the hell do I loosen up so much around him? Short today, ne? No one better ever read this. It's kinda embarrasing.

She was really worried about him. He close the book and sat down to think.
"Shit! I forgot the storeroom key!" Hiei jumped out the window just as Kairi ran into her room. "Now, where'd I leave it?" She started with her desk and found it right next to her journal. She paused, catching sight of the book. "Could have sworn I left it....open." She paused. "Oh well, I think later." Hiei let out a relieved sigh while balancing on the tree branch. "Wait a second...." She walked up to the window. Hiei held his breath again. "I know I wasn't stupid enough to leave the window cracked open. No time to deal with it now." She slammed the window shut and locked it before running back out. Hiei only waited about five or ten minutes until she returned. The phone rang again, and she answered it quickly. "Moshi-Moshi?....." She switched to fluent English. "Hi, Shelly!" (A/N: Shelly....in the U.S.....16 with a driving learner's permit? *Shakes* Shelly! Driving?! Shelly, if your reading this, I've got something to say! If you buy a car, I'll burn it just like your aunt would! (Inside joke) Character dedicated to Shelly because she IS Shelly!) "Did your family finally move?.....Why California?.....Yeah, I'm going to Hawaii in a month......No!.....Because I don't want to learn the hula. I just want to sit in a hammock, read a book, and get a drink with a little umbrella in it......Alright.....No, I don't mind......Yeah..... That's okay......Alright? Bye." She reached for a piece of paper and wrote a quick note. "Now, I can spend my weekend at Uncle Dante's." She threw on her coat and walked outside.

Chappie two is done. Reviews pleaz.

Kurama: Review before she decides to use her mallet on me.

Hiei: *Sitting onto of an unconscious Kuwabara* What do you mean 'Her mallet'? I like it and I'm keeping it!

DarkWater: Okay, but you can only use it on Kuwabara!

Hiei: Simple enough.

DarkWater: Review so I can write the next chapter and let Hiei do more Kuwabaka bashing!
