The Prayer
DarkWater: Hiei is content with Kuwabaka bashing with my mallet, Kurama is sleeping in a hammock in my bishonen sanctuary, Sesshomaru and Inuyasha are around here somewhere, and Kuwabaka is still unconscious! I don't own any of themor Seal's song, Prayer For The Dying. On with the third chapter!
"Hi, Uncle Dante!" Kairi called as she entered.
"You ready?" he asked.
"I'll do fine." Kairi stepped onto the stage and grabbed her guitar case. She opened it, sat on the stool, and spoke into the microphone. Hiei sat in the rafters as usual and watched. "I'm going to play a song by Seal. This is call 'Prayer For The Dying'.
Fearless people, careless needdle,
harsh words spoken, and lives are broken.
Forceful aging, help me I'm fading,
heaven's waiting, it's time to move on.
Crossing that bridge with lessons I've learned,
playing with fire and not getting burned,
I may not know what you're going through,
but time is the space between me and you,
life carries on, it goes on.
Just say die and that would be pessimistic,
In your mind we can walk across water,
Please don't cry, it's just a prayer for the dying
I just don't know what's got into me
Crossing that bridge with lessons I've learned,
playing with fire and not getting burned,
I may not know what you're going through,
but time is the space between me and you.
There is a light through that window,
hold on, say yes, while people say no.
Life carries on. It goes on
I'm crossing that bridge with lessons I've learned,
I'm playing with fire and not getting burned.
I may not know what you're going through,
but time is the space between me and you.
There is a light through that window,
hold on, say yes, while people say no.
'Cause life carries on.
It goes on. It goes on.
Life carries on.
When nothing else matters,
when nothing else matters,
I just don't know what's got into me.
It's just a prayer for the dying,
for the dying.
"Ladies and gentlemen, 'A Prayer For The Dying'." The crowd applauded, and Kairi jumped off the stage.
"And who was that for?" Dante asked as she approached the bar.
"No one. I just like that song."
"Oh, c'mon. Don't lie to me."
"I swear! It's not for anyone!"
"Okay. Okay."
"Anyway, I should get going." Kairi grabbed her bag and was out the door. Hiei stayed in the rafters until he saw Kurama walk in. Now it was safe to get down around the ningens.
"So, you are still around." Kurama said, catching sight of Hiei.
"Of course I am, fox."
"So, boys, what can I get you tonight?" Dante asked. Kurama opened his mouth but stopped when the phone rang. "Hello?.....Kairi, you sound terrible. What happened?.....Slow down for God's sake!.....Kairi, you have to slow down!.....She's...O my God. She-she can't be....."
The funeral was held a few days later.
Kairi's POV
The rain wouldn't stop....how appropriate. I stood back a bit, under a tree. I probably should have stood closer since she was my Okasan. Again, I didn't cry. I just stood there, staring as the lowered the coffin into the ground. Suiichi came. We had become decent friends. He stood beside me. Arms crossed over my chest, I squinted my eyes shut. I knew the worst was yet to come. I stayed with my uncle since the accident. Tonight, I would face that empty house with pictures of what used to be hung on the walls. I would probably wake up tomorrow morning and expect her to be downstairs. She would tower almost a foot over my head with black hair and bright red-almost orange-eyes. Hiei reminded me of my Okasan. The coffin continued to be lowered. Being Christians from America, my uncle and relatives sang Amazing Grace as a last memorial. I simply stood back and mouthed the words until it was over. Dirt turned mud was now thrown over the box.
"What is your family singing?" Suiichi asked me. Guess I didn't consider the fact it was English. I remembered the song from that night.
"It's-it's just a prayer for the dying." That hurt the most. The service was over after the longest time of my life. I turned away and cleared my throat to regain my composure. "I'll see you in school tomorrow, Suiichi."
"You should stay home." he suggested.
"I-I can't stay in that house. It's just too hard."
"I understand. Would you like me to walk you home?"
"No, I'll be fine." And I walked off with that. I was going home to change, then I would do the same thing I did when dad and sis died. I'd go to any other bar in town and drink until I passed out. It wasn't the right thing to do, but I didn't care at that point. At least the rain was letting up as I reached my house. I changed and left with no intention of remembering today.
Hiei had been there for the funeral, even if his presense went unnoticed. It was late and the sun had gone down. He reclined in a tree in the park and fell asleep. He dreamed that night.
"So, you must be Hiei." He jumped back at Kairi's Okasan in his dream. "You were there a few weeks ago. Kairi didn't say much except that you remind her of me."
"What's your point?" Hiei asked impatiently.
"As a last request, I want you to keep an eye on her just for tonight. She'll probably drink herself sick to try and forget for a night. Maybe Suiichi should have walked her home. Anyway, I know you won't let her do anything too stupid."
"But I....."
"I know you've been watching her. You're too shy to say anything."
"I am not!"
"Then say something!"
"There's nothing to say!"
"If you say so. But please, don't let her hurt herself."
Hiei shot up and got his barings before taking off. Made he could be cruel and cold, but even he had respect for the dead. Actually, he was slightly pleased with his position. She wouldn't remember anything come tomorrow morning. He could go back to the Makai and forget about her. He stopped and jumped down to the sidewalk. There she was, walking down the street, dressed in her travel attire. She stopped but didn't turn.
"Hey." she said deadpan.
"I'm sorry....about the accident and all." Hiei was sorry? Now he was pushing his luck with his cold personality.
She clenched her fists and squinted her eyes shut. "I was just.....to naive to see it." She paused. "I went back to the sight were she was killed." She paused and took a deep breath. "It wasn't an accident. So, yeah, I'm sorry about it, too. Sometimes I wish I didn't have a family growing up. I wouldn't have so much to lose." She paused yet again. "Anyway, maybe we'll cross paths again sometime. Good bye." Hiei didn't move. He wanted to follow her and tell her to get over it, but he couldn't. His legs were firmly in place until she was gone.
For the next few months, it seemed like she avoided everyone. Hiei was sitting outside her bedroom window once the sun had set, but what he saw partialy shocked him. A small boy, maybe three or four, different furniture, and a family. Kairi wasn't there. He ran for Kurama's house. Maybe the kitsune knew something.
DarkWater: Kurama, do you know something?
Kurama: Maybe....*Sly smile*
DarkWater: Hear that, Hiei? Your love left you! It's so sad!
Hiei: *On serious sugar high....my fault!* igettofallinlove!doigetkissed?canihavemoresugar?moresweetsnowNOW!
Darkwater: *Opens giant vault full of ice cream* It's all yours. Go crazy.
Hiei: *Eyes widen to the size of basket balls* sweet snow..... *Lunges into vault*
DarkWater: While Hiei eats sweet snow until he throws up, I need reviews. Flames will be used to warm the coffe that is keeping me awake at 3 in the morning to write this.
