Part One
"Why does this always seem to happen to us?" Hiei growled.
"It's the price we pay for betraying our kind," Kurama answered simply. "I think we can make a break for it now."
The two demons emerged from their hiding spot and made their way cautiously through the spirit world jungle. Even though their steps were completely silent, their movements were being tracked. Hiei paused, letting Kurama get a few steps ahead of him.
"What's wrong?" Kurama whispered, but Hiei didn't have a chance to answer.
The spear of spirit energy shot from a thick cover of leaves, aimed straight at Kurama?s heart. Kurama spotted the attack too late to dodge and could only stare as the spear flew towards its mark with deadly accuracy.
Energy crackled and sparked just before the scream of agony echoed through the jungle, making smaller demon birds and animals race for cover. The injured body fell to the ground and lay motionless in the dirt.
"Hiei!" Kurama yelled, falling to his knees next to his friend. "Hiei!"
"I'm alive," Hiei groaned. "Keep your eyes open!"
Kurama spotted the attacker just as he was about to unleash another spirit spear. It was one of the demons they had been sent to find for Koenma. Pests that needed to be exterminated.
In one fluid movement, Kurama stood and reached under his hair, pulling out the rose concealed there. With a flick of his wrist, the innocent flower became a deadly weapon; the Rose Whip. He glared at the half hidden coward with a mixture of disgust and hatred.
Now that Kurama was ready for it, the spear attack was easily dodged. The demon?s eyes widened in fear just before the thorny whip descended, slicing him cleanly in half but leaving the bush he was cowering behind completely untouched. An instant later, the blood-red flower was returned to its hiding place under his thick hair.
"Was it him?" Hiei asked.
Kurama knelt back down beside him. He was concerned that Hiei had not moved an inch since falling.
"It was," Kurama answered. "And his brothers will surely be close behind. How badly are you injured?"
Hiei paused before admitting, "I can't move at all."
Kurama barely concealed a gasp as he examined the burn mark on the back of Hiei's jacket. Lifting the cloth, he saw that the spirit spear had hit directly on the
spine, explaining Hiei's paralysis. The only question was would it be temporary ... or permanent.
"Leave me," Hiei ordered. "Get out and report back to Koenma."
"I can't do that, Hiei," Kurama said, gently probing the injury. "You know that." The spine was intact, giving him hope that Hiei would recover in time.
"You used to be able to."
Kurama sighed. "Call it a human flaw."
Gently, Kurama rolled Hiei to his back and then lifted the smaller man onto his shoulder.
"You'll never make it out," Hiei said. "Leave me."
Kurama ignored him and kept walking down the path. Hiei's weight made it impossible to run, and he didn't want to jar the injured spine any more than he had to.
