Ooh … the suspense is almost killing me! How scary. I have something good planned for this chapter of "Angel in the Darkness". I hope all my readers will like it. Well, Yusuke, do the disclaimer.

Yusuke: DG doesn't own YYH. She and a friend made up Blood Rose and Blood Raven months ago. So don't sue her. You won't get more than sixteen cents anyway.

DG: *smacks him*

Yusuke: ow! What'd I do?!

DG: You don't go around telling everyone how much money someone has! That's rude! *to readers* yes, I know I'm broke. So don't sue me.

Chapter 3

A Wish Too Late

Amy opens her eyes slowly as the door across from her is busted inward. She sees everyone has their weapons. Then she notices what bow Arina has. A very special bow. Arina is a very gifted archer, and was given the Bow of Light. A bow that could save the life of someone who is about to die.

Amy smiles weakly. Arina must think that she can save her sister with the bow. How nice of her oldest sister, always caring for others before herself. Then Amy hears a clock start to strike twelve. Midnight. The hour of Amy's undoing. She sees Blood Rose smile wickedly. Blood Rose finishes the spell that will seal Amy's fate. At the final strike of the clock, Amy lowers her head, and starts to glow a soft silver, the same soft silver that is her spirit energy. She feels her body rise slowly above the others.

"We're too late!" Kelly cries out, watching in horror as the spell to take her sister from her takes effect. "AMY!"

Amy clutches her eyes shut, in too much pain to hear anything. She feels pain start to seep into her shoulder blades, as powerful angel wings grow out of her back. Amy screams in pain. Everyone in the room winces at the gut wrenching sound of Amy's death screams. Hiei watches in fear as Amy seems to slowly be torn to pieces before his eyes, and he is helpless to do anything about it.

But there is someone who is able to stop Amy's pain. "I'M SORRY AMY!" Arina cries out, as she knocks a silver arrow into the bow she had been holding. She sights along the arrow, aligning it so that she will not miss her sister's heart. As the others watch in horror, Arina lets loose the arrow, crying out in pain and anguish as soon as the arrow is out of her hand. She lowers her eyes, knowing that the arrow would make impact.

And it does, as those around Arina watch its speedy attack. "NOO!" Blood Raven and Blood Rose cry out simultaneously as the arrow takes away what should rightfully be theirs.

Amy feels the silver arrow pierce her heart. She smiles softly, knowing that her sister had not failed her. She dies, knowing that she had not been failed by one she had trusted with her soul. But she decides that another needs the wish more than Arina does. Her final thoughts land on Hiei.

They watch as the glowing stops and the angel wings pull back into Amy's small body. She falls slowly to the ground. She lands, seeming unharmed by all but the arrow through her heart. Hiei runs and picks her up, placing her body in his lap. Then, a bright flash of light erupts from Amy. When they're eyes clear, they see that Hiei, NOT Arina, had been taken by the light.

Arina smiles softly, knowing that her sister had known how hard it would be on Hiei if he didn't get the wish. And Arina knew what Hiei's wish would be. She knew it in her very heart that he couldn't bare to live without Amy. The others turn to her, seeming to be looking for some form of explanation. "Amy made her choice," she said simply, and not another word could be drawn out of her about the subject.

---With Hiei---

Hiei opens his eyes slowly. And he's surprised to see that he's not in the old warehouse with the others. Instead, he is surrounded by a soft silvery glow. He sees a pair of violet eyes glow slightly just in front of him. "What is your wish?" a soft, silky voice asks. The eyes seem to glow calmly as they watch him. The voice sounds almost like Amy's. Almost, but not quite.

"What?" he asks. "Isn't Arina the one who is supposed to make the wish?"

"You were chosen, Hiei Jaganshi, child of fire and ice. She does not want this wish to be wasted," the voice says, still soft. The eyes seem to smile at him.

"Who are you?" he asks.

"I am all that is within your heart, Hiei. She chose you to be the wish maker," the voice says. The eyes follow his every movement. And the eyes seem sad that he had to make a wish. "And She wants you to be happy."

"Who is She?" Hiei asks.

"She is one who cares most deeply for you," the voice says. "She is one who wants you to be happy. What is your wish?"

"Where is Amy?" Hiei asks.

"She is fine. She wants you to be happy, with Her or without Her," the voice says.

"I wish there were a way I could make it up to her for not getting to her in time," he said, feeling regret for not being able to save his Amy.

"Is that what you truly want?" the voice asks. The eyes watch him, as if waiting for him to make a mistake. But they remind him of Amy's eyes, when she had looked at him that morning when they woke up.

"Yes," he says, looking into the eyes with no fear of what will happen.

"Then let what shall be, to be!" the voice says. The eyes seem to smile at him, as if glad for his choice. "Let the one that awaits you to be revealed!"

And he sees the light fading. And until the light is completely gone, the violet eyes watch him, making sure he doesn't back down from his wish. But the eyes seem to be happy all the same. And then the light is gone. But he hears Amy's voice before he is transported away. "I love you, Hiei. Take care of the child you shall find," she says. "I'm going to where I belong! I shall see you when you and she pass on!"

He sees the eyes turn into her body. He feels a small kiss on his lips. She smiles at him. "Goodbye, Hiei. I shall always watch over you," she says, turning away. She takes one last look at him, waves goodbye, and disappears.

---With the others---

They watch silently as Amy's body fades. Hiei appears just as Amy is completely gone. He seems surprised to be there. Then they hear a child-like laugh. A small child steps out from the shadows. She has black hair with a silver streak through it and violet eyes. The child appears to be about six or seven.

She looks at them. "You saved me," she says in a small voice. Her voice sounds like that of an angel's. She walks up to Hiei. "Thanks, mister," she says. "My name is Kayla."

Hiei looks at the child. "Hn," he says, turning to leave. The small girl grabs at his cloak. And Hiei is surprised to feel a small pull at his black cloak. He looks at the girl. "What do you want?" he demands.

"I don't have anywhere to go," she says softly, looking up at him.

He seems like he's about to leave her there. Then he changes his mind. "Come with me," he says. Kayla's small face seems to brighten at what he says.

The others are in shock that Hiei would allow a small girl like her to reach a soft spot in his heart in so little time. Then, Arina realizes what's going on. The child is really the baby that had been kidnapped from Amy. The child was Amy's daughter that none of the sisters had expected to ever see again. The child would be about the right age for the young one that had been taken from them.

Hiei and Kayla leave the warehouse, leaving the other Tentai to wonder what had happened. Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara turn to the three remaining sisters, to question what had happened.

Arina and Kelly shake their heads. "You'll learn in due time," Caroline says.

Then, a huge support beam falls nearby. Arina looks around. "We better get out of here, the place is falling apart," she says, walking to the exit. Her sisters and the Tentai follow her lead, none of them wanting to be crushed underneath a collapsing building.

~~~with Hiei and Kayla~~~

"So, mister, what's your name?" Kayla questions.

"Hiei," he says, carrying the small girl so that they can get out of the collapsing building faster.

"I like your name!" Kayla says, smiling up at him. `Good thing he doesn't know who my mama is,' she thinks softly, behind a very good shield. She had watched as Hiei had been taken to get a wish from her mama instead of her aunt Arina. When the wish had finally been made, Kayla had been freed to get to him so that she could get out of the warehouse. She watches as he runs very fast through the streets, fast enough for neither of them to be seen and cause a wind to happen in his wake. Suddenly, she yawns cutely. She curls up closer to Hiei and falls asleep.

#Hiei's POV#

I feel her get closer to me. I look down and see that she's asleep. `She looks so peaceful when she sleeps,' I think. Then I realize what I had just thought. `Why did I just think that?'

By the time I get back to the temple, Kayla is lost in dreamland. I smirk down at her. `She seems to look just like Amy did. Amy, I wish you were here,' I think sadly.

The child begins to stir slightly as I walk into the temple. She opens her violet eyes and looks up at me. She smiles. Then she looks around the living room. Genkai walks in. She notices the girls in my arms. "Hello, Kayla," Genkai says.

I can't say that I'm not surprised that Genkai knows her. "Hi, Genkai-sensei!" Kayla says, still slightly tired. She tries to get down, so I put her on the floor. She runs up to Genkai and studies her. "You look happy," Kayla says suddenly.

Genkai looks at the small child and smiles. "Well, you were kidnapped three years ago, so I thought that you'd be dead by now," she says.

Kayla looks away slightly at the mention of being kidnapped. "Yeah, but Hiei fixed it!" she says, a smile suddenly on her lips. She looks at me and smiles.

Genkai laughs slightly. "You two must be hungry. Hiei, there's sweet snow in the freezer. Kayla, dinner's on the table," Genkai says. "And I'm going to go meditate."

"Alright, Genkai-sensei," Kayla says. She runs over and pulls my hand. "Come on!" she says, trying to pull me into the kitchen. I shrug and follow her. She pulls a chair over to the fridge/freezer system. She opens the freezer door. "OOH! Lots of ice cream!" she says, seeming to be very excited. She pulls out a carton of sweet snow. "CHOCOLATE! MY FAVORITE!" she practically yells.

#regular POV#

Kayla tries to pull the lid off of the chocolate ice cream, but it seems to be stuck. She quickly closes the freezer door and jumps down from the chair. Hiei watches her attempts at opening the ice cream in amusement. Suddenly, the ice cream disappears from her hands.

"Huh?" she says, looking around. Then she sees that Hiei has the ice cream and has already opened it. "Oh, you're fast," she says. She grabs two spoons from a drawer and takes the ice cream from him. "But you gotta share!" she says happily. Hiei watches as she puts her spoon into the ice cream. She holds out the other spoon to him. He takes it. Then they both start digging into the chocolate ice cream. In about five minutes, the ice cream is gone. "Mm! Good!" Kayla says very happily.

Hiei looks at her, feeling a bit of jealousy for the small girl. But he doesn't understand why he would be jealous of Kayla. He decides not to think about it.

Well, that turned out interesting. I wonder why I did the chapter that way? I guess I did it alright, though. I like it, a lot! Well, ja ne! This is the end of this story! But there will be a sequel. Keep a lookout for "Of Love and Sacrifice", the sequel to this story. It will be about Hiei and Kayla, but it will take place ten years after this chapter. Eight pages, shorter than the last two chapters. Ja ne!
