Kuwabara opened the door with his foot and carried Mei in, who was still blacked out in his arms. Yukina and Genkai were already examining the other's injuries with the help of Botan. How do you get off with no burns Hiei? Yusuke asked as he bandaged the cut on his arms. I'm a fire demon. Yusuke frowned. Damn lucky bastard. Someone tugging at his collar interrupted Kuwabara's listening. Kuwabara The baffled red head looked at the girl in his arms. Mei's eyes were open and a weak smile was plastered on her face. Heh, Matoko's going to be so jealous Her words trailed off as she blacked out again. Kuwabara knelt down and laid Mei on the empty mat.
So, what's their status? Yusuke asked pulling his shirt back on over his bandages. Mei's got just some 1 st degree burns and bruises and her ankle is sprained. Same with Matoko, no sprained ankle but um Yukina paused trying not to laugh. We have to cut her hair short. It was all burned. She's not going to like that! Kuwabara commented. Jin's ribs are crushed and bruised; they'd never be able to heal on their own. Chaos has a broken arm but no permanent damage. Botan nodded. Is Mei the only one blacked out? Kuwabara asked. Yukina nodded. Yes. She must've hit her head pretty hard. The others are all sleeping. Yusuke nodded. Best not wake them up. Right on queue, Matoko screamed in her sleep and sat up with a jolt. Jin and Chaos moaned and woke up too. What the hell was that about? Yusuke asked, startled. Matoko rubbed her head. I had a dream that to torture me, you guys locked me in a room and I was forced to look at naked pictured of Hiei for eternity. Everyone face faulted. Suddenly, Jin spoke up. Uh, Matoko, what's wrong with your hair? Matoko reached into the back pocket of her jeans and pulled out a compact mirror. AHHHHHH! IT'S ALL BURNT! MY HAIR!!!!! Yusuke bit his lip to keep from laughing. I'm sorry Matoko-chan but we're going to have to cut a lot of it off. Yukina explained remorsefully. "Not my hair! Anything but my hair!!!!" Matoko wailed jumping to her feet. Hiei quietly snuck up behind Matoko and pulled out his trusty katana. Matoko turned around but only in time to watch as her beautiful but burnt locks tumbled to the floor.
"You... you bastard! How could you do that?! God damn you! I would've let Yukina or Shizuru do it without any problem but you?!" (In feudal Japan, your hair was like your honor and cutting it was considered a dishonor.) Hiei smirked. "I was tired of your pathetic whining so I took care of the problem." Matoko glared daggers at Hiei and summoned her light sword. "You ass hole!" She placed it to Hiei's throat but the fire demon didn't move. Everyone practically jumped back away from the deranged girl. "Don't you ever mess with me again!!!" she growled. "Or what ningen?" Hiei asked slyly. "Are you going to cut me with your pathetic excuse for a sword?" Matoko make a blind charge at Hiei, missing and stabbing into the wall. Matoko pulled her sword free of the sword and faded it into her palm. "That was just a cheap shot you freak! I'll kill you!" While Hiei was about to reply, Matoko rammed him into the wall, the katana falling to the ground with a clang. "They're going to kill each other!" Yusuke exclaimed watching as Hiei and Matoko wrestled on the ground, each trying to over power the other.
Their quarreling was cut short by a rhythmic swish. Matoko looked up curiously to see Chaos, who was standing upright, with Hiei's katana positioned in his hand and his ponytail cut off. Jin couldn't help but laugh. Dude! You look like you got into a fight with a lawn mower and lost! Chaos muttered something under his breath but otherwise ignored his friend. I didn't want anyone to get hurt. Anyway, if no one else has long hair, why should I?
Matoko blushed as she let go of her spirit energy. The light sword disappeared and everyone sighed with relief. Matoko curiously walked up to Chaos, still furiously blushing but a small smile playing across her face. She ran into his open arms. Why did you do that really? She whispered. Chaos held her tighter in his embrace. I already told you. If you have to lose your hair, when why shouldn't I? All of the girls let out a romantic sigh. Awwww Matoko smiled and grabbed the collar of Chaos's loose tee shirt. As soon as their faces were just centimeters apart from each other's, Matoko gave Chaos a quick kiss and let go. Damn, I should be nice more often! Chaos thought aloud.
After a quick breakfast, everyone resided to the main temple. Everyone sat in a group talking while Jin sat patiently next to were Mei was still sleeping. Suddenly, Mei began to stir and Jin smiled, relieved. Mei sat up and rubbed the lump on her forehead. Damn, it feels like I was hit by a truck! Hey, where are we? Jin removed the bandages the were wrapped around Mei's head and replied, At Genkai's place. Are you all right? Everything fine? Mei smiled, noticing the pang of worry in Jin's tone. Yeah, I'm fine. The last thing I remember is flying into a wall and then the smoke pouring into the compartment. Oh, and then there was when I woke up in Kuwabara's arms. Jin nodded. That just about sums up everything. Mei noticed the bandages around Jin's chest and skimmed them with her finger. Are you okay? Jin nodded. I'm all right. My ribs are a little sore. Chaos's had a broken arm. Both him and Matoko were healed though. Matoko didn't have much damage except Except what? Mei asked, concerned.
This. Mei looked up at Matoko who was towering over her. Matoko your hair. Matoko nodded, solemn as she cursed Hiei and his katana under her breath. I love it! Mei squealed. What? Matoko looked up, shock painted across her face. I really like it! It's looks nice! Matoko knelt down next to Mei and smiled. And do you know what the best part is? What? Chaos, oh my god he is such a sweet heart! He cut his hair too! Really? Matoko blushed and cocked her head to the side. Yeah! Isn't that sweet? Mei nodded. But who cut your hair? Hiei, that damn bastard! He took matters into his own hands. Matoko cross her arms.
Mei suddenly stood up. Mei, don't Matoko hissed. But Mei wasn't listening. She stood only feet away from Hiei now and the demon starred up at her. So you're the one who cut Matoko's hair. Mei growled. Hn. Yes, I cut that ningen girl's hair. What of it? I just have one thing to say. Mei said in response. Everyone braced themselves as Mei paused. Could you cut my hair next time? Everyone facefaulted and Mei laughed.
Alright, enough with the fun and games. Yusuke said, approaching where Mei, Matoko, Jin, and Chaos had gathered. For once, Yusuke looked serious. What the hell did you think you were doing, up and leaving like that? We. Well, it's hard to explain Matoko replied, quite nervously. We got called on business. Mei finished. But why the hell didn't you tell us or at least let us help you?! Yusuke asked. We've brought you enough grief as it is! It's not like we expected to be attacked. Jin replied, a little angrily. Yeah! How were we freaking supposed to know? Chaos added. What could have caused that much damage though? Kurama wondered aloud. So low class demons. Nothing more. Hiei muttered. How could they do that much damage though? Botan asked. It was just a train. And besides, these ningens can easily be defeated by some low class scum. The fire demon motioned to the four teenagers who were clearly offended.
You little! Matoko growled. Kuwabara interrupted her. You're wrong Hiei. Those demons may have been low class but they were well pumped up! Like they were on steroids. The room fell silent again. Wait I know Mei said nervously. It's the virus. The virus? Keiko asked. Yukina cringed. I don't like the sounds of that. She muttered. Suddenly, everyone jumped as a buzzing alarm went off. Mei glanced at her watch only to come face to face with a very distraught Mr. Komoda. What is it? Mei asked. Matoko looked over her friend's shoulder to look at the watch too. Mei, you, Matoko, and the boys need to get moving now! What is it? Matoko asked. The virus had caused a very large power surge in demons. They're all gathering at a certain point where the virus has taken on a humanoid form. You need to sort this out! One question. Mei said. Yes? How did that virus get into the anime world in the first place? Mr. Komoda pointed to Jin and Chaos. When they interrupted your signal and came in with you, they released the virus from the firewalls we had put up. That's why they don't change apperance. They aren't part of the original programming! Now, Mei, here are the coordinates of the demons' strong hold. Good luck. Jin and Chaos sweat dropped as the watch turned off.
The color drained from Mei's face. So, where are we going Mei? Yusuke asked. Looks like it's back to Maze Castle Mei muttered.
A cold breeze blew through the trees as the eight spirit fighters lined up. Yukina smiled and handed each of the eight warriors a box. Here, I made these for you all. Good luck. Yukina stopped at Kuwabara and hugged him. Just promise me you'll come back safe Kuwabara! Yukina whispered. Kuwabara held her tighter in his embrace. I will. You can count on that! Yukina smiled. I knew I could count on you. Keiko and Yusuke bid their farewells and Botan smiled. I've provided a portal to take you all to Maze Castle. Good luck! Yusuke nodded. Thanks Botan. Oh! Before I forget Botan rummaged through her pockets before pulling out a compact mirror. Remember this? Botan asked, a little too cheery. Yusuke took the communicator and shoved it into the pocket of his green and orange coat. Mei glanced back and the homely little temple before darting into the portal after the others.
The sky swirled black and a lonely howl came over the dunes. Man, this is freaky. Chaos muttered. Jin nodded in agreement but kept walking, following Yusuke. Mei opened the top of the box Yukina had given her. Hey! Yukina made us all scarves! Mei exclaimed. That was nice of her. Matoko replied. Hn. What foolish gossip Hiei mumbled to himself. We can hear you, you know. Matoko growled. The fire demon shrugged and jammed his hands into the pockets of his rob. Damn, there it is. Yusuke breathed while pointing over the horizon to the castle looming in the distance. Holy shit! There must be one hundred demons just standing around outside! Kuwabara cried. No only that, but pumped up demons. Kurama added. We're going to need a diversion. Jin said. Mei and Matoko grinned. I've got just the thing. Mei exclaimed.
Hiei, Kurama, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Jin, and Chaos watched from their position hiding amongst the dunes. What are they going to do? Kuwabara asked Jin, his voice hushed. Beats me. Jin replied. I just hope this isn't one of those blind moves. You mean the ones Kuwabara's so famous for? Yusuke asked playfully. Kuwabara jabbed him in the ribs and looked out to where the girls were lying in the sand, waiting to put their plan into action.
The communicator in Yusuke's pocket buzzed and Yusuke picked up. On the screen were Mei and Matoko's eager faces. Hey, how the hell did you connect to our communicator? Yusuke asked. Easy electronics. You can talk to us through Mei's watch. Matoko replied. Oh. Anyway, here's the plan. We're going to distract the demons, then make a break for it and get into the castle. You guys follow. We'll meet you in the top tower. Mei explained. You just be careful. Jin said. Don't worry! We will Mei and Matoko grinned evilly before signing off. I don't like the sound of that Chaos stammered.
Purple fire lit up around Mei's palm. Just as it began to grow, Mei compacted it into a tiny ball. Ready Matoko? she whispered, her back still pressed against the dune. Yeah. Go for it. Matoko replied summoning her light sword. Mei threw the ball of purple energy into the air and with one swing, Matoko knocked it into the group of demons like a baseball into the out field. Fire in the hole! Mei cried. The demons looked up and scattered as the ball explored, blasting them in every direction. Break! Matoko cried. The two girls jumped up and sprinted through the lines of confused and blow up demons towards the castle gates.
Jin watched, holding his breath. Damn, they're not going to make it! Those demons are recovering too quickly! Jin got up to help the girls but Chaos grabbed his wrist. Come on man! We don't even have powers! Then what's this? Jin held out the palm of his hand as a flaming talisman appeared in it. Wow. What about me? Chaos tensed up his hands, bony spikes beginning to break painlessly through his skin. That good enough for you? Jin asked. Chaos nodded, satisfied, and got up to join his partner. Let's go for it.
They're gaining on us Mei! Matoko panted, glancing over her shoulder at the hordes of demons coming straight at them. We're almost there! Mei yelled. Mei felt a hard hand on her shoulder as a demon caught up with her. She shrieked and just as she did, the body became severed from the hand with one clean cut. Mei shook the dead hand off of her and looked back. Jin smiled and ran up to her, another talisman in his hand. You didn't think we were going to let you guys go alone did you? he asked. Chaos ran up next to Matoko and smiled, the spike loaded on his lower arm and ready to be fired. Thanks. We own you guys. Mei panted. The gates shut behind the foursome and the demons backed off, snarling and upset that the human intruders had gotten past them.
They made it! Kuwabara laughed. Yusuke smiled. We'll, I guess it's our turn to go and hack through. Kuwabara nodded and summoned his rei-ken. Hiei drew his katana and Kurama readied his rose whip. Let's just make this quick. I hate wasting my time on such pathetic demons. Hiei said with an evil smile.
