"Oh shit!" Chaos cussed as the gates shut behind him and the others. "What's wrong?" Mei, Matoko, and Jin groaned in unison . "We don't even kn o w what we're doing or where we're-" Chaos was interrupted by grins that spread across Matoko and Mei's faces. "Who says we don't know where we are?" Matoko asked. "Anyways, the others should be making it in here soon." Mei added. Jin followed the girls while studying his surroundings in a mixture of awe and caution. "I don't know about you guys, but this place gives me the creeps." He shuddered as h e turned back to the girls. "Wel l, anyone with even the slightest bit of spirit awareness can feel that the demons here will eat you alive if you let them." Matoko sighed. "What is that supposed to mean?" Chaos asked, slightly nervous. "It's simple. Matoko has super good awareness of spiritual energy. She can tell you where any spirit or demon is, just like Kuwabara." Matoko's eyes widened adoringly. "Wow, being compared to Kuwabara... this is my lucky day!" "Ok, with that done, where should we go??" Chaos asked with a tone of worry.
Yusuke fell back panting and laid another blow to the demon's hips, entirely splitting him in half. "Damn, these guys put up a fight." Hiei's katana sliced about twenty pieces into a demon before replying, "Hn. Wait until we get to this virus-infected demon the girls were talking about." Kurama stumbled against Hiei's back so that they were fighting back-to-back with the demons coming every which way. "Maybe we were better off accompanying the others." Kurama panted. Kuwabara grunted, the sweat dripping down his narrow face. "You know, I don't think we're going to making this one back." Yusuke said. "Not... yet Urameshi! I won't give up! I promised Yukina... I'm going to come back alive and so are you guys!" Yusuke smirked at his best friend's honor in his word. "Yeah, we will."
"Well, they should be coming..." Matoko said, her worry now evident and accented by the creases in her forehead. "Should be coming? They should be here!" Jin retorted. "Uh yeah... do you think they got into trouble?" Mei asked. "I don't know. I really have no clue but whatever it is, we can't help them." Matoko replied with a shrug. The group stopped in the hallway and slumped up against the wall, waiting. More time passed and tensions rose . "Uh, maybe they found some other way in..." Chaos suggested dumbly. "I highly doubt it. But then again, who knows? We did tell them we'd be waiting in the top tower." Mei replied, crossing her arms across her chest. "Yeah, maybe we should--" Matoko became rigid all of the sudden and cutting off her sentence. "Yo, Matoko, what's up?" Chaos asked shaking the blonde's shoulders. "Shh! I don't know but--" Matoko paused and then screamed. "Mei! Look out!" The girl charged at her friend, tackling her to the ground. Jin and Chaos's eyes widened as the spot where Mei was standing was suddenly illuminated by a yellow blast. "Umm, I guess the demons know we're here." Chaos stammered. "VERY GOOD GUESS!" Matoko screamed in reply. "Matoko, get on my back and tell me where they're at!" Mei said grabbing the stunned boys by the collar. "Ok, fair enough." Matoko replied.
Mei sped off in a trail of blue dust as Matoko barked out directions on her back. "Left! Right! In front! Look out!" Mei skidded into an unoccupied room and dropped the boys. Matoko clambered off of Mei's back and squeaked, "Is it over?" Both boys seemed to be speechless, recovering from the initial shock. Mei smiled while taking in deep breathes. "Heh, glad everyone's alright." Mei fell to the floor, exhausted. Jin knelt beside her. "Are you okay?" he asked the blue haired girl. "Yeah, just need a second to catch my breath..." Mei panted, her fatigue evident. "Man, that is just freaking... well, freaky! Damn it, I knew we shouldn't have come!" Chaos cursed. "Why? Without us coming, I'd have never met Mei and you'd have never met Matoko." Jin replied. Mei smiled and laid her head on Jin's shoulder.
"So where are we?" Chaos asked, blushing after Matoko flashed him a smile. "Wait! I know! This is where the freaky eyeball thing tricked poor Kuwa-kun and the others! Then Hiei chopped him up." Mei said with new found energy. Matoko nodded. "First time Hiei ever did something right. Oh well, we better get to the tower. We don't even know if there are more demons in here." Jin stood up after wrapping his denim jacked around Mei and took a torch from the wall. "Doesn't look like anything's around here... but then again, I could be wrong..." Something moved in the corner causing everyone to jump. Mei took the torch from Jin, who was frozen stiff, and held it out. A mouse scampered from the shadows and into the light. "AW! SUCH A CUTE MOUSEY!!!!" Mei squealed. She handed Matoko the torch and allowed the mouse to scramble into her palm. "I thought girls were afraid of mice." Chaos retorted. "Shows what you know. Come on." Matoko mused. Mei patted the mouse on the head and allowed it to scamper up her arm and onto her shoulder. "Can the mouse come?" Mei asked. "Sure..." Jin groaned. "I'll name you Kawaii!" Mei announced to her new mouse friend.
Finally the group came to a long narrow hallway. "Should we just go through?" Chaos asked. "Sure," Mei started. "If you want to be crushed..." she added petting Kawaii. "Um... what do you mean?" Chaos asked nervously as if Mei was going to crush him to death any minute. "Wait a second, this is some gate or something..." Jin remarked causing Mei and Matoko's ears to prick up.
"I see, it looked like you have seen some episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho." Matoko retorted. "Yeah, is it a sin or something?" Jin replied. "Dang, you watch chick anime? I can't believe you!" Chaos shouted. Jin blushed slightly. "Correction," Mei said a-matter-of-factly. "This is actually shonen, a boys' anime. Girls really aren't supposed to get into it. Kind of like DBZ." "What, really?" Matoko asked, slightly confused. "Yeah, think about it. Both animes have characters that can use come sort of beam from their hand or whatnot." "Right." Matoko said rubbing her chin. "I never thought of that!" "Makes perfect sense. Yusuke, like Goku, is always saving the day with some sort of desperate move. Hiei is Vegeta, king of attitude with gravity defying hair and short stature. Kurama is Trunks with Gohan's brains and Trunks's hotness. Kuwabara..." Mei paused. "What's wrong?" Matoko asked. "Well, I don't know who Kuwabara would be. Everyone compares him to Piccolo. I would say more of Krillin. Except, Kuwabara next backs down." "Wow, where did that come from? It's so unlike you to be full of thought." Chaos grunted. "Baka! Jeez, I'm not blond." Mei replied. "Ow dammit!" Mei's hand made harsh contact with Chaos's face sending him to the ground. Matoko and Jin sweat dropped . "Well, they're very alike." Jin muttered as he watched Mei kicking Chaos. "Yeah, but then again, we are like them too." Matoko added. Jin nodded.
"Now what about this hall?" Jin wondered aloud as he gestured to the newest obstacle they had encountered. The shouting finally died down and Mei spoke. "Well, we could just destroy it... I mean we do have powers you know." "Yeah, but would it be worth it to waste on a hall. Don't we have to save our energy for the demon?" Chaos asked rubbing the huge slap mark on his face. "Oh my god! He said something intelligent! I can't believe--" Mei was cut off by the sounds of footsteps behind them. Matoko summoned her light sword, Mei and Jin packing their fiery attacks. Chaos's spikes began to erupt through his skin. From the shadows, the four ragged looking Reikai Tentais appeared. Yusuke was clutching the nasty wound at his side. "Back luck." Chaos blatantly said. "Hn, what does it look like to you?" Hiei replied. "You're the ones who brought all of this upon us and I don't see you doing any of the work." Kurama pushed his friend aside. "Hiei, look at their attacks. They didn't have as much trouble as we did... I think they will prove to be a big help."
Suddenly, everyone went back to the task at hand. "Great, we get to hold up that damn rock again." Kuwabara huffed. Mei and Matoko grinned brightly at everyone. "What?" Yusuke muttered. "You mean you have a plan?" Mei nodded. "I can run through and just flip the switch." Mei volunteered . "Nah, I got a better idea. The seven of you hold it then I'll get it." Hiei offered. "Um, easier... wouldn't it be if you just ran... oh never mind! Just do what you want." Yusuke cried, not in any way, shape, or form of a position to argue at a time like this. They walked down the hall and only a few seconds after crossing the line, the ceiling collapsed on them, Kuwabara catching it first since he was the tallest. Mei grunted and made a dash for the switch. The switch was flipped and the group was quickly relieved from its labor. They were happy, but not ready for what would happen next.
A massive boulder, clearly a firewall, tumbled down on top of Mei, the dust and debris blocking her from view. The color drained from Jin's face as he hesitantly took a step forward. "Mei...!" he said, his voice breaking. "I wasn't ready for that..." Yusuke muttered, being the smart ass he was. Amazingly, Matoko smiled. "You weren't but I was. Damn booby traps..." Everyone glance up and Mei sat on top of the boulder happily. "You... scared me." Jin stammered rushing over to help Mei off. "I'm sorry. Didn't mean to scare you guys. The Gate of
Betrayal may not have been the best episode but I did watch it quite a few times." A green blast grazed Yusuke's arm and he stumbled forward crashing into Kuwabara's side. Kuwabara helped to support his friend as Matoko glanced back. "Oh shit! They're back!"
The group panted as the demons gave hot pursuit . "Mei, Matoko, Jin, Chaos! You guys go left up the stairs and we'll go right! Break!" Yusuke commanded. The girls nodded and charged up the staircase to the left.
Matoko bent over at the top, panting, while leaning on the large wall obstructing the path. Jin lifted a brand new torch to the wall. "So, what is this thing?" Chaos asked." "It-It's a seal!" Matoko stammered tracking the pads of her fingers over the ancient writing. "Any idea of what it means Mei?" Mei nodded and clicked on her watch. "Translation system: start." she prompted. A huge hologram was emitted from the screen of the watch light up the hallway and staircase even more. "Ancient Japanese writing. This work is a seal made to warn visitors of demons. Only those that are in tune with the Spirit World may tap into the enchantment and open it." The watch shut off and the room went dim again.
"Heh, there's got to be another way in." Jin bemoaned. The boy summoned another talisman into his palm and wedged it into the groves on the seal. "Hit the dirt everyone!" he cried. Matoko and Chaos fell to the ground, their hands on their heads. Mei did the same, Jin landing next to her with his arm shielding her body. The explosion sent ripples up Mei's spine and she looked up. The dust had cleared but there was no sign on the seal that the flaming talisman had ever been placed there. The mouse squeaked in Mei's ear as she stood up. "Well, got any other ideas genius?" Mei asked sarcastically. Jin shook his head. "Not a single one." Matoko swallowed and stepped up to the seal. "Maybe I can open it." The girl's head swam as she placed her hand firmly on the seal where there was an indent for a hand print and closed her eyes. Her blond hair pricked up on end as if made buoyant by a vast body of water. Mei shielded her eyes and could faintly see the blue waves of spirit energy being emitted from her friend's body. Suddenly, something in the seal clicked and the door drew back.
"How- How did you do that?!" Chaos exclaimed. Matoko shrugged. "Intuition?" she guessed. "Nice job Matoko." Mei took the torch and led the way into the room. A faint laughing was heard as they stepped inside. Matoko turned and saw Yusuke and the others walking through another doorway. Mei smiled, "It's good to have Kuwabara, huh?" "Yeah, he did help us get through that trap." Yusuke muttered. The laughter grew as they all turned to its source.
"I'm happy you all could make it. It's a pity that you won't live long enough to celebrate." A feminine voice said. The group spun around and automatically ducked into fighting stance as the demoness stood up.
