A/N: Whee! This is the most exciting chapter since Tenma made his appearance. I wrote this whole chapter in day and I'm working on chapter six as we speak. @_@ Dah, the writer's life is a demanding one, but it's fun. ANYWAY, I don't know if Hiei had any naivete about humans, so I just wrote that he was clueless about some things. Shinzui gets some good lines in this chapter and the next. Hehe. ^_^ Check it out and I hope ya' like it! See you at the end of the chapter!

&a mp;nbsp; The calm evening gave way to a stormy night as lightning played across the sky and thunder boomed like a thousand drums. The group of Reikai boys had dispersed to their houses, except for Hiei, who wandered around in the rain. A flash of lightning lit up the area around a house that Hiei just started to pass when a loud crash announced a chair's arrival through a window. The fire demon stopped behind some trees to watch in slight interest as two angry voices could now be heard. The door suddenly banged open, flooding light on the walk way and Hiei watched as a very angry man shoved his daughter outside, but the two were still sniping at each other.
"I don't want you back in this house until you calm down," yelled the man.
"You started it!" snarled the girl, glaring at her father as she stood up, "I told you to not send your lackeys out to bring me home!"
The man glared at the girl. "I told you to be home by dinner, Shinzui! I had to send Toraeru out to find you."
"Yeah right," growled Shinzui, glaring at her father, Shoushiko, "I called you from Genkai Sensee's dojo and said that I would stay there the night, but noooo." Her voice became louder. "That didn't please you, so you sent Toraeru to come and drag me away from there! You hate Yume-san, Chikara Sensee, Genkai Sensee, and Mr. Chikara! WHY?!"
"That's none of your business, Shinzui," replied her father in a cold tone.
"Oh, I know why!" burst out Shinzui, ignoring her father's look of pure rage, "Maybe it's because Yume-san was mom's best friend! Perhaps you blame HER for what happened! Or do you still like to blame me for mom's death!" There was a sharp slapping sound as Shoushiko's hand made contact with Shinzui's cheek.
&a mp;nbsp; Hiei's eyes went wide as what little naivete he had left about humans vanished at that moment. He had known demons to be this horrible to their offspring, but the fire demon had never seen a human do this to their own child. Shinzui rubbed her cheek, glaring at her livid father and then turning away. Shoushiko walked into the house and slammed the door shut, blocking the light that had shone through the door. Shinzui turned and a flash of lightning lit up the area again, allowing Hiei to get a look at her face.
&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui's eyes were a deep crystal blue again and emotions of anger, sadness, and pain ran through them. Her cheek was red from the slap, but a thin trail of blood was dripping down from a cut on her temple. She walked towards the gate and turned to walk in front of the brick wall, but stopped, staring at the ground. With a scream of frustration and rage, Shinzui slammed the side of her fist into the wall, breaking some of the brick away and leaving a noticeable dent. Now, soaking wet from the rain, the girl stood there, staring at her hand, which was bleeding from a large gash across the top and from several smaller cuts all over.
"That was interesting," said Hiei, taking a step out from the tree.
"YAH!" exclaimed Shinzui in surprise, staring around and without warning, took off into the park with a speed that left Hiei standing there, blinking.
"Since when can humans run that fast," muttered Hiei, shaking his head and then feeling a strong aura that was following Shinzui, "That feels like demonic energy." His eyes narrowed as a faint purple glow issued from the middle of his bandana and his thoughts reached out to Kurama.
Kurama? There was no reply. Kurama! Still no reply. Wake up, fox!!
What is it, Hiei? replied Kurama, sounding tired, What's with the yelling?
There's a demon in the park stalking your new friend, answered Hiei.
A demon?! exclaimed Kurama, sounding shocked, What's it doing here?
Baka kitsune! snapped Hiei, exasperated, Stalking your new friend. I know you live the closest to the park. Get over here now!
You sound like you can't do anything about it, said Kurama, but I'll change and head over right now. This comment from Kurama made Hiei go silent until Kurama said. I'm on my way.
&a mp;nbsp; As the two continued to talk by telepathy, Shinzui had run to an old pine tree and leaned against it, gasping for breath after a long run. The cold air was not kind to her lungs and she sat underneath the tree, shaking from cold and her unshed tears were finally let loose. She hugged her knees to her chest and buried her face into them, quietly crying as the storm raged around her. The sounds of footsteps caused her to look up into the face of a creature that made her eyes go wide with terror and she screamed.
&a mp;nbsp; Kurama had just turned the corner to see Hiei standing there when Shinzui's scream reached their ears and he hurried down the sidewalk. Hiei saw Yusuke and Kuwabara running after Kurama, looking tired, but very alert after hearing the scream. The four went into the park and followed the aura until they had to stop when the signal was close. Shinzui suddenly darted from behind a tree, screaming like a banshee as a bat demon flew after her, his glowing orange eyes fixed on the girl in front of him.
"Dear Kami-sama and everything sacred in life!" she exclaimed, ducking under some low branches, so the demon ran into them, "What the hell is this thing?!" A loud ripping noise was heard as the demon's claws tore off her sleeve as he tried to grab her arm, but he managed to hit Shinzui hard in the back, causing her to fall over. "Ow... That hurt..."
"The little wolf's hard to catch, she is," hissed the bat demon, turning to fly at Shinzui again, "Such a tricky, yet clever little thing she is."
"I've just been randomly ducking and running around," muttered Shinzui, staring at the demon, "Wait... He just called me little wolf." She blinked, looking very confused.
"Master Koumori misses you, little wolf," said the demon, setting down in front of her and folding his wings, "Master wants you to come back."
"Who?" said Shinzui, completely dumbfounded as she stared at the demon, "Who the hell is this Master Koumori."
"The leader of the group," answered the demon, smirking at her, "He wants his little wolf back and he sends me to get her."
"Um... Are you blind?" asked Shinzui, raising an eyebrow, "Do I look like a wolf?" She edged away as the demon looked her up and down.
"Master said that little wolf has lost her Makai beauty," replied the demon, his orange eyes still looking Shinzui up and down, "But she's gained a Ningenkai beauty that Master seems to like just as much." His eyes suddenly looked over at the Reikai boys and he snarled in anger. "Intruders! Humans come to steal my reward!"
"What?" said Shinzui, looking in the same direction and her jaw dropped, "EH?! What are you guys doing here?!"
The demon's eyes bulged as he saw Hiei and Kurama, "DEMONS! Traitor demons come to steal my reward!" Without warning, the bat demon snatched Shinzui from her spot and wrapped an arm around her, to keep her from escaping, but also lifting her off the ground. "Traitors and humans stay where you are!" A hand of claws found Shinzui's throat and squeezed gently around it.
"Crap..." muttered Shinzui, feeling her air supply get cut in half, "Guys, if all this dude wants is me then get out of here."
"And miss all the fun?" chuckled Yusuke, shrugging, "I'll have to turn down the offer of no fight."
"What?" said Shinzui, staring at the boy, "But this thing will tear you to shreds... You're human."
&a mp;nbsp; The demon suddenly let out a screaming hiss and let go of Shinzui, who dropped to the ground with a thud. The demon had a huge gash running down his back and Hiei stood there with a bloody sword in his hands. The other three attacked with their various weapons as Shinzui retreated to a tree and stood watching in horror. A thorny whip sliced across the demon's face, blinding it as a burst of orange and ice blue energy hit him. Screaming in rage, the demon unknowingly rounded and charged at Shinzui, with its claws ready to attack and it's fangs bared.
&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui shrieked and threw out her hand towards the demon as if to make it fly back, but something else happened. Energy surged through her veins to her hand and the boys felt a strange sensation fill the air. A flash of silver light blinded them as a large burst of silver energy was forced from Shinzui's palm into the middle of the demon. Shrieking in agony, the demon writhed on the ground behind Shinzui covered in gashes and burns, missing one of its arms. The boys saw that their new friend had a silver aura around her and she was staring at her hand in shock and amazement.
"Little wolf fights back...." hissed the demon, staggering towards Shinzui, who was facing the opposite way, "Now I'm allowed to do more damage."
&a mp;nbsp; The bat swiped at Shinzui with his remaining arm, leaving large gashes across the girl's back, causing her to yelp in pain and turn around. The demon's attack on Shinzui caused more attacks to fly from the boys, but the bat only had one interest and that was Shinzui. The scent of her blood reached his nostrils and he inhaled, following it to the girl, who didn't realize what the demon was doing.
He hissed in glee and lunging at her, but only succeeding in knocking her over. "There you are!" His hand clamped around Shinzui's throat, squeezing hard, causing the girl to become pinned to the ground.
"L... Let... Go," rasped Shinzui, barely catching a breath, but the demon didn't let go, "I... said.... LET ME GO!" She pressed both her hands to the demon's chest and released a massive amount of the silver energy, blasting the demon away into a tree.
"Noooo!" hissed the demon, his voice getting higher as his body seemingly shattered into dust.
&a mp;nbsp; The four boys turned to stare at Shinzui, who was coughing and drawing deep breaths, but she stared at the pile of dust and demon bits in shock. She was bleeding from the various injuries sustained over the night's events and her skin was pale. Her wide eyes moved to the boys, but their images seemed to blur as she felt herself slipping away from exhaustion and blood loss. Before she knew it, her mind had fallen into the darkness of sleep and her body collapsed to the wet ground, the aura no longer lighting up the area with its ghostly light.
"Apparently, there's more to this girl than we think," said Kurama, looking from the pile of dust and demon bits, to the sleeping girl.
"Should we take her home?" asked Kuwabara, "To her house."
"Her father threw her out earlier," replied Hiei, crossing his arms, "I don't think he'd be pleased to see her. By the way, why are you two here?"
"Kuwabara called me claiming that some lady came into his dream and told him to go to the park and help Shinzui," answered Yusuke, glaring at Kuwabara, "We both came here out of curiosity, found Kurama, met you, and here we are."
"Where can we take her then?" asked Kuwabara, looking from Shinzui to the other three, "My sister wouldn't be too pleased and our first aid kit's gone. So there's nothing to stop her wounds there."
"My mom's drinking at our house with her friends," said Yusuke, "It's a miracle I got any sleep at all."
"We can take her to my house," sighed Kurama, "I'll explain to my mother about it." He looked at Shinzui. "Did anyone else think that the name Koumori sounded familiar or the silver energy felt familiar?"
"Come to think of it," mused Yusuke in response, "They do seem familiar."
"We should go," said Hiei, his forehead glowing a bit again, "More demons might flock to this area if they're prowling around."
"Right," said Kurama, picking up Shinzui, and walking in the direction of the entrance with the other three.
&a mp;nbsp; The group headed over to Kurama's house and found his mother, Shiori Minamino, sitting on the couch, frantic with worry. She looked shocked to see her son carrying an injured girl with him and immediately set to bandage her up. Kurama explained that his mother was now working as a part-time nurse at the hospital and she knew what she was doing. Shiori had Shinzui moved into Kurama's room and shooed them out after locating a pair of her son's smallest pajamas.
"So now you get kicked out of your own room?" asked Yusuke, chuckling as they sat drinking some soda.
"Our spare room is being renovated at the moment," answered Kurama nonchalantly, "I'll sleep here on the couch."
"Shuichi," said Shiori, walking out, "Your friend will be fine. She just needs lots of rest to recover from the blood loss. Luckily, the injuries weren't too severe or deep." She sighed. "I can't believe gangs would attack girls so viciously. The gashes on her back were shallow, the various small cuts all over her body will heal very quickly, and the cut on her temple is already healing, but the wounds on her hand had a couple little chips of brick in them." Hiei remembered Shinzui hitting the brick wall with her fist and looked at Kurama. "I cleaned them out, but she won't be able to use that hand for a day or two."
"Thanks for the low down, Mrs. Minamino," said Yusuke, sighing.
"It's a good thing you boys found her when you did," said Shiori, "She could've been in even more trouble if you hadn't. Now, I want you three to get home and you may come by before school to see her if you want or you can come after school." Her eyes were on Hiei, Yusuke, and Kuwabara. "Shuichi, dear, I'll get some blankets for you." His mother left the room to locate blankets for the couch.
"We'll see you later, Kurama," said Yusuke, walking out the door with Kuwabara and Hiei.
&a mp;nbsp; Kurama acquired the blankets from his mother and he retrieved a his uniform from the closet and a set of pj's for the night while his mother placed another blanket over Shinzui. He looked at the sleeping girl, noticing that her face was still pale, but there was a serene expression on her face. He left the room to change and lay down on the couch. He stared at the ceiling as the thought about how familiar her energy had felt, but exhaustion soon took his mind and he found himself falling into the dreams that flooded his sleep.

How was it? Did you like it? I thought of how Gollum spoke when I created that bat demon, so I used a Gollum-like speech. It took me a while to figure out what color Shinzui's energy should be. -.-() Ice blue and red were already taken by Yusuke and Hiei, so I went with my favorite color! Silver! ^_^ Whee! Shiori being a part-time nurse might be convenient, but I think she really is. o.O() *shrugs* Anyway, hope you enjoyed the chapter.

SNEAK PEEK!:

** We fly into dreamland! Whoo!

** Shinzui has some trouble with some blankets and her legs.

** Guess who gets to explain what happened in the park. Yo! Fox boy! You're up! Watch out for Kouken, he may bite if you piss Shinzui off.
A hand of claws found Shinzui's throat and squeezed gently around it.
