A/N: Compared to the last three chapters this one might seem a bit dull, but a few new people are introduced.
&a mp;nbsp; The next morning, Shinzui, dressed in her new Sarayashiki uniform, walked down the path with Kouken by her side. The wolfish dog now followed her where ever he could and slept beside her bed every night. Shinzui giggled, thinking about how Kouken was being so protective of her, when she caught sight of a green uniform. Yusuke stood there at the end of the path with Kuwabara and Keiko, waving her over.
"Morning, guys," said Shinzui, smiling as Kouken barked happily, "What brings you three to the house?"
"Well," answered Yusuke, scratching his head, "Since the encounter yesterday, we thought that you'd like company as you walked to and from school."
Shinzui sighed and looked at them. "In short you want to make sure Tenma didn't have another go at me. Am I right?" She raised an eyebrow, looking at them with her eerie eyes.
"Uh... Yeah," replied Kuwabara, chuckling, "Gee, you're smart."
"Not smart," sighed Shinzui, looking very mellow, "Just experienced. I appreciate the concern, but I can make it to school with no problems." She smiled, hiding all traces of negative emotions in her eyes, but there was a sharp look of slight annoyance in them. "I don't want to trouble you all with helping me."
"It's no trouble actually," said Keiko, smiling, "Your house is very close to our route to school, so it doesn't take much time to swing by and meet you here." She giggled and scratched Kouken behind the ears.
Shinzui's eyes softened when she looked at Keiko. "Well, then let's go." She smiled and walked past them with Kouken trotting at her sides.
"Does that dog follow you everywhere?" asked Kuwabara, looking at Kouken as they walked towards the school.
"Well, now a days he does," replied Shinzui, smiling down at Kouken, "He sits outside of my work when I'm there."
"You work?" said Keiko, looking surprised, "I thought students couldn't have after school jobs."
"I'm a special case," answered Shinzui, sighing, "I've had such good grades at my last school and I still keep up with them now, even with the job, so they let me keep it."
"Where do you work?" asked Yusuke, his hands in his pockets.
"Blue Moon Cafe," replied Shinzui, "I work today, so if you want to stop by, then go ahead." She smiled at them as they reached the gates of the school and Kouken snuck to a little corner where he could stay covered. "The little sneak still knows how to hide."
&a mp;nbsp; The group went into school and sat through their classes, but they seemed duller than yesterday's had been. Lunchtime was even more uneventful, except for Kouken's appearance, which attracted the attention of a lot of students and Shinzui found herself talking about her dog and his history. I've never seen people so interested in Kouken before, thought Shinzui as they walked inside and the wolf-dog hid himself once more, it's like they've never seen a dog before. The rest of school passed without any problems and the group soon found themselves wandering down a side walk with Kouken at Shinzui's side.
"Man that was a boring school day," said Shinzui, brushing back some of her messy bangs, "It seemed more interesting yesterday." Her eyes widened when she looked at her watch. "Ack! I need to run home and get my uniform before I'm late to work! See you all later. Don't be afraid to drop by the cafe!" Without another word, Shinzui sprinted off in the direction of her house with Kouken running beside her.
"She's fast," said a bewildered Kuwabara, watching Shinzui disappear around the corner, "Even with those shoes on."
"Let's take up her offer and visit her at work," said Keiko, smiling, "I heard it's a great place to get a snack."
"Yeah," said Yusuke, nodding at her, "Only, let's find Kurama and Hiei first. They might be interested in this, too. Hiei hasn't met her yet."
"Met who?" asked a cold voice behind them.
&a mp;nbsp; All three of them turned to see a boy with spiky black hair that had white trimming in it and a white band was tied around his forehead. His red eyes were fixed on Yusuke and he wore black pants and a black shirt with black boots. He came up to Kuwabara's chest and was short compared to the rest of the group there. Behind him stood Kurama in his school uniform and a bag in his hand.
"Hiei, Kurama," said Yusuke, grinning, "Good thing you're here. We're about to go to the Blue Moon Cafe and visit Shinzui. Want to come?"
"Sure, why not," said Kurama, smiling at them, "Care to come, Hiei?"
"Who's Shinzui?" asked the boy, raising an eyebrow at his friends.
"You'll meet her when we get there," said Yusuke, walking down the sidewalk with the rest of the group.
&a mp;nbsp; It took the group over an hour to get there because they hadn't even asked where the cafe was, so they kept getting lost. Finally, Keiko made them stop and ask for directions to the cafe. After being given directions, the group headed off in the correct direction, double checking all their turns, so they'd find their way back. Eventually they got to the cafe and saw a familiar wolf-dog curled up outside. He barked happily at their appearance, but eyed Hiei warily before approving of the boy and letting them pass to the doors.
"Hello," said a sweet voice, "Welcome to the Blue Moon Cafe. I'm Shinzui and I'll be your server this afternoon." Shinzui was standing there with a smile on her face and dressed in a cute looking uniform with various shades of blue. Her long hair was tied back in it's usual braid with an indigo ribbon tied at the top. "Oh! Hi guys! Nice to see you all!" Her eyes fell on Hiei, who was staring at her in slight confusion. "Who's this?"
When Hiei didn't reply, Yusuke spoke for him, "This is Hiei. He's one of our friends, but right now he seems to be in shock."
"I'm not in shock," said Hiei, shooting a glare at the chuckling boy.
"Nice to meet you, Hiei," said Shinzui, smiling, "I'll get a table for you. Follow me." She walked over to a large table surrounded by six chairs and set five menus down. "I'll come back to get your orders and take my break." She grinned and hurried off to another table.
"What are you staring at Hiei?" asked Yusuke, seeing that Hiei was still watching Shinzui as they sat down, "It's like you've never seen a girl before..." He thought a moment. "That's how all the guys at school reacted, too."
"It's her aura," answered Hiei, eyes skimming over Shinzui's figure, but then they moved to Kurama, "Haven't you noticed how strange it is?" He went silent when Shinzui came back and got their drink and food orders, but once she was gone, he continued. "It feels like a mix instead of a solid human aura."
"I've noticed, too," answered Kurama, sipping some tea, "Her eyes change shades depending on her mood."
"Hey guys," said Shinzui, walking back to them, "I got my break." She located an empty seat next to Kurama and across from Hiei. "Mr. Chikara's willing to let me have a long break." She sipped some tea she had brought with her.
"Chikara?" said Yusuke, "Is he the Chikara Sensee you talk about?"
"Oh, no," replied Shinzui, smiling," That's his brother. The Mr. Chikara's first name is Ryouken. Chikara Sensee's first name is Kioku. Yume-san is Chikara Sensee's wife." She laughed. "A happy family."
"What does Kioku teach you?" asked Keiko, drinking some of her tea.
"Well, they took care of me when I was little," answered Shinzui, tapping her chin in thought, "My father was a busy person and always left me with the, so one day after a particular... Problem. Chikara Sensee decided to teach me martial arts. I've been taking lessons ever since."
"Where's the dojo?" asked Kuwabara, "There aren't many in the city."
"I believe they live with Genkai Sensee," mused Shinzui, looking at the ceiling a bit, "But I haven't seen Genkai Sensee in a while... I wonder what happened to her." She blinked as everyone at the table choked on their drink and stared at her. "What?"
"Did you say," said Yusuke, completely shocked, "Genkai SENSEE?"
"Um... Yes," answered Shinzui, looking at him, "Yes, I did."
"I thought she didn't teach anyone else," said Yusuke, looking confused.
Shinzui stared at him. "Wait... You know her?!" Her face broke into a grin. "You must be the dimwit she was always talking about."
Yusuke nearly fell out of his chair in exasperation. "She always called me that. What did she teach you?"
"Just a few fighting moves," replied Shinzui, shrugging, "I'm not much of a fighter until I'm pushed into it. Chikara Sensee took care of most of my training. Yume-san taught me about... Um..." She eyed them as she paused, biting her lip. I can't tell them what she's taught me, she thought desperately searching for a more normal sounding thing to learn and finally found it. "She taught me sewing." She smiled, but they could see relief in her eyes.
What's she hiding? thought Hiei, eyeing her with a look of suspicion in his eyes, There's something else that this Yume-san taught her, but what is it?
Shinzui's voice jerked Hiei out of his thoughts. "Mr. Chikara taught me cooking when I was little and he still does."
"Shinzui," said a voice as a man with sleek brown hair walked over to them, "Ah! I see you made new friends at your new school." His deep green eyes swept over the entire group and he smiled. "They look nice, but I guess anyone's better than that gang."
Why does everyone except Keiko look so tense? thought Shinzui as she saw her friends, except Keiko, giving the man a strange look. She cleared her throat and said aloud, "Everyone, this is Mr. Chikara, the owner."
"Ryouken Chikara," completed the man, bowing a bit, but his eyes were still on the group, "Who might you all be?"
"I'm Keiko Yukimora," replied Keiko, smiling at the kind man.
"Name's Yusuke Urameshi," answered Yusuke, still looking at Ryouken.
"I'm Kazuma Kuwabara," said Kuwabara, drinking some soda.
"My name is Shuichi Minamino," said Kurama, sipping his tea, but gestured to Hiei, who had no intention of speaking to the man, "And this silent boy is Hiei... Segahikui." He smiled a bit nervously as Hiei threw a glare at his red haired friend.
"So that's your last name," laughed Shinzui, smiling at Hiei.
"Nice to meet you all," said Ryouken, still looking at the boys with an odd glimmer in his eyes, "Shinzui, Yume would like you to come and see her later today about what you discussed yesterday. She's worried."
Shinzui's smile vanished and she nodded to the man. "I know why, but I'll drop by the dojo and talk to her again."
"Also, my brother wants to show you a new book he discovered in the basement," said Ryouken, smiling a bit, "He said it's really interesting."
"I'll do that," said Shinzui, smiling back, "I'll get back on my shift in a couple minutes, too."
"You've worked more than your share this whole week, Shinzui," scolded Ryouken, looking stern, "I don't want you overdoing it."
"Alright," laughed Shinzui, stifling her laugh with a hand, "I'll try not to overdo it, but I really need the money if I want a place of my own."
"I wish you the best of luck in that," said Ryouken, but before he could say anything else, a crash came from the front of the cafe, followed by the sounds of crying and cruel laughing.
&a mp;nbsp; The group and Shinzui looked to see a black haired girl in a cafe uniform, sitting in the middle of broken china, crying. A gang of boys in dark blue uniforms stood over her, laughing as they ripped up the bill and started to walk out. In one swift movement, Shinzui moved out of her seat and was in front of the door with her arms crossed, eyes blazing as she glared at the gang. The boys stopped and looked Shinzui over with slight interest, causing their smiles to spread.
"Looks like they have a better looking chick here," said the one in the front of the group, "Hey, girl, would you like to go out sometime and we can show you a better side of town."
"I'd rather spontaneously combust, jerk" replied Shinzui in a very cold tone, her eyes narrowed, "I suggest you pay your bill and apologize to Muzai right now."
"Did you hear her?" asked a black-haired boy, "I believe she insulted us."
"Shall we show her who's boss, boss?" asked a brown-haired boy, looking at a blond-haired boy.
"Sure, why not," answered the front boy, looking bored, "Do what you wish." He walked over to sit on a stool as the two boys chuckled.
"Shinzui," said Ryouken, suppressing a smile, "No fighting IN the cafe." He winked slightly at the girl, who smiled.
"Yes, Mr. Chikara," she said, winking back, "I won't fight in the cafe."
"Heh, you're in trouble now," said the black-haired boy, smirking at her, "You can't even fight back now."
"I can't?" asked Shinzui, feigning innocence and surprise, "Oh my, now what shall I do." The two boys missed her sarcastic tone, but Yusuke and his group did.
&a mp;nbsp; The two boys charged at Shinzui as the girl quickly moved back to grab the door handle and fling it open. She stepped aside, allowing the boys to run straight outside, and Ryouken chuckled when he saw Shinzui's sneaky smile as she walked out. The group got up and walked to the window to watch Shinzui slide into a stance as the two boys recovered from their sudden exposure to rough ground.
"They're in for it now," said Ryouken, his eyes glimmering with excitement, "She won't hurt people if they insult her, but if they don't pay, she'll act as a bouncer."
&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui never struck at the boys until they tried to hit her, which gave her time to get their unguarded points as their punches sailed over her head. The leader stood up, looking alarmed as his two lackeys were dispatched by the girl and quickly went to leave. A hand grabbed his collar and lifted him off the ground a bit, scaring the boy even more. The owner of the hand was Ryouken and he had his hand out. The terrified boy gave him the money he owed and fled with his beaten up buddies once he had been let go. Shinzui came back inside looking a bit dirty and disheveled from the fight.
"Muzai, are you ok?" asked Shinzui, kneeling down to help the girl clean up the mess, "Did they hurt you?" Her eyes had become a soft blue color as she looked at the girl in concern.
"N... No," sniffed Muzai, her soft brown eyes filled with tears, "They just frightened me." She took a shaky breath to calm herself. "That's all."
"A bit sloppy on the techs, Shinzui," chuckled Ryouken, his eyes still sparkling, "What does my brother teach you?"
"Hey, I'm wearing a dress," answered Shinzui, smiling, "Of course they were sloppy, but that means I'm rusty. I haven't gotten to learn or practice in a while."
"I believe your friends are curious," said Ryouken, looking over at the group of boys and Keiko, "Their minds are full of questions."
"No doubt you'd know," said Shinzui quietly with a wink, "Yume-san will be mad if she finds out you've used it on my friends."
"I meant no harm," said Ryouken, smiling nervously, "Their minds scream the questions. Now, you get back to your friends. Muzai, you can have the rest of the day off if you wish."
"M... May I?" asked the timid girl, "I really want to see my sister before she has to leave today." She smiled a bit when Ryouken nodded and let her leave the cafe.
"I'll finish cleaning up," said Ryouken, looking at Shinzui, who's apron was full of large pieces of broken china, "Throw those away and go talk to your friends. Then as soon as you can, go and talk to Yume and Kioku."
"Yes, sir," said Shinzui, standing up and walking over to a trash can, "I'll make sure to do that after work." She dropped the broken china into the trash can and turned to look at Ryouken.
"Actually," said Ryouken, looking worried, "Yume said it was really important, so as soon as you're done talking to your friends, I want you to go and talk to her."
It was Shinzui's turn to look worried. "Alright, but what about you? Is there anyone else who's going to work today."
Ryouken looked at a list posted by the kitchen door. "Kashi, Murasaki, and Taikou should be coming in very soon. Go, do what I told you."
"Yes, sir," said Shinzui, turning and walking over to the boys and Keiko, "Well, I'm off work now." She smiled at them. "Let me change and we can go somewhere else." Before anyone could say anything, Shinzui disappeared into a door marked 'Employees Only' and they sat down.
"That was weird," said Yusuke, sighing as he watched Ryouken clean up the rest of the broken china.
"That man isn't normal," muttered Hiei, watching Ryouken closely, "I felt his presence in my mind."
"You felt it, too?" asked Yusuke, looking at the fire demon.
"As did I," said Kurama, resting his chin on his hands in thought.
"It was a creepy feeling," said Kuwabara, shuddering.
"What are you boys talking about?" asked Keiko, looking at them.
&a mp;nbsp; The boys stopped their conversation as Shinzui returned in a pair of pants and a shirt with a bag slung over her shoulder. The group retreated to a place in the park where they could lie around in the sun and talk. Shinzui sat with Kouken and answered all their questions, but steered the odd questions down a different path than their speakers wanted. Their questions and conversation soon dried up with no other paths and Shinzui looked at her watch to check the time.
"Oh, I need to go," she said, staring at her watch, "If I'm going to talk to Yume-san, I should go now or else my dad's going to send out lackeys to find me later." She stood up, smiling. "I'll see you later." The girl waved at them and ran off, disappearing around the wall with Kouken next to her.
"She's hiding something," huffed Hiei, crossing his arms, "I know it."
"Let's adjourn to my house," said Kurama, looking at his watch, too, "My mother would be happy to have guests for dinner and we can talk then."
"I can't," said Keiko with a sigh, "I have to help my parents with the shop, but I'll drop by later if I can."
"Alright," said Kurama, nodding at her.
&a mp;nbsp; The group got up, left the park, and because Yusuke insisted, walked Keiko to her house before proceeding to Kurama's. His mother was happy to see Kurama's friends and made a great dinner for them. They spent the rest of the evening discussing Hiei's suspicions and the strange presence that had invaded their minds at the cafe. One thing was for sure, their new friend, Shinzui, was hiding something that tweaked their curiosity and they wanted to find out what it was.
A/N: Compared to the last three chapters this one might seem a bit dull, but a few new people are introduced.

* * * * * * * *
