&a mp;nbsp; The group had talked about various different topics the whole afternoon and were enjoying themselves. Kouken was snoozing by Shinzui's feet when the girl looked at the clock and slapped her hand to her forehead. Everyone stopped talking and looked at her when she made this action. Standing up, making sure not to step on her dog, Shinzui ran upstairs and came back a few minutes later, stuffing a key into her pocket.
"Shin-chan, what's up?" asked Ryuka, shifting from her comfy position in the chair to stand up.
"I forgot!" exclaimed Shinzui in response, "I need to get some more stuff from my room. A couple of items I don't want to leave there."
"Like what?" asked Ryuka, watching her friend check her pockets for everything, "A case of ramen? Your laptop? A plushie?"
"No, Yes, and no," replied Shinzui distractedly, "My laptop's still there, but so is my box of journals and etc."
"Your box of journals within reach of that jerk Toraeru!" exclaimed Ryuka, in mock horror, "Make haste dear friend! Before he decides to read through them."
"Ha, ha, ha," said Shinzui, rolling her eyes, "I wanted to take more of my dad's journals, too, so I could read them."
"Now there's an idea," said Ryuka, grinning, "Can I come along? I haven't swiped something of your dad's in a long time."
"You swiped something whenever you came over," laughed Shinzui, putting on her shoes, "You made sure my dad could never find his pens, paper, scissors, stapler, and even his toothbrush." She stood up and went for the door.
"Wait," said Ryuka, stopping her friend, "I think someone should go with you. The last time you went somewhere alone, you ended up as Fish Girl. Besides, I bet those scientists dudes are prowling around."
"Hmm," muttered Shinzui, considering these words, "You're right... I guess you get a chance to swipe stuff from my dad again."
"I can't go..." said Ryuka, sighing, "I told my parents I wouldn't leave people who aren't house guests in the house. Take..." She cast her eye about for a person and secretly grinned when she saw Kurama. "Take Shuichi. You two seem to get along fairly well. I'm sure he'll be a perfect bodyguard." She grinned as her friend eyed her with suspicion.
"Alright," sighed Shinzui, looking at Kurama, "Could you come with me?"
"I have plenty of time left in the day," answered Kurama, standing up and walking over to Shinzui, he whispered to her, "I think your friend has other ideas though." He smiled at Shinzui's fairly red face.
"See you two later," said Ryuka, waving as the two left and once the door had closed she added, "That worked like a charm."
Outside, Shinzui sighed and shook her head. "Ryuka... She's a good friend, but always tries to play matchmaker."
"I noticed that," said Kurama, chuckling as they walked down the steps and then up the street, "Is she always like that."
"Well, only once has she ever tried the matchmaker thing," replied Shinzui, shrugging, "That's probably because I was stuck with Tenma for so long." She shuddered at the memory. "Anyway, what about you? Any of your friends ever tried to play matchmaker for you?"
"Yusuke's always attempted to play matchmaker for everyone," answered Kurama, chuckling, "His attempts usually end up with Keiko hitting him."
"I bet all the girls at your school fawn over you," said Shinzui as they turned a corner, "You seem like the guy every girl would want to get their hands on." She laughed when Kurama nodded with an amusing look on his face. "A couple bad experiences with them, too?"
"More than a couple," replied Kurama, sighing at the memories.
"I hope things have gotten better," said Shinzui, smiling at him, "Going through a school day with girls falling over themselves to try and get your attention must be very tiresome after a while."
"Have you had any experiences like that with guys?" asked Kurama.
Shinzui laughed at this question and replied. "No, that's the only thing Tenma was good for. Keeping away all the other guys who posed threats, but then again, he'd deal with the brave ones in horrible ways..."
She trailed off and stared ahead of her.
"Wasn't there anyone who tried to help you?" asked Kurama.
"There was one person," muttered Shinzui in response, "He was the only one who saw my abilities and still..." She sighed, her eyes becoming a crystal blue color. "He tried to help me get away from Tenma, but... Tenma eventually caught on and..." She felt her voice catch in her throat as she tried to continue, clenching her fists tightly. "Let's just say that the guy could no longer help me."
&a mp;nbsp; A long period of silence passed between the two as they walked down a sidewalk that lead to Shinzui's house. Their eyes met the sight of Shoushiko and Toraeru loading a large van with several boxes, bags, and other things. Shinzui stopped, staring at the two men, who had taken no notice of her or Kurama, but continued their work. Kurama saw Shinzui's sad eyes change to a look of worry, confusion, and slight panic as they darted from the two men and the truck to him.
"Are you alright?" asked Kurama when he saw Shinzui's expression.
"I'm fine," replied Shinzui, "I think I should go find out what's going on." She started walking and Kurama made to follow her, but she stopped him. "No, Shuichi, could you please stay here... If something happens... I really don't want you to get involved or get hurt." She noticed Kurama's look of concern. "Look, If... If you don't want to leave... Please, just stay here, out of sight."
"Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" asked Kurama.
Shinzui gave him a soft smile. "Thank you for the concern, but I really must handle this myself. I won't be long... I hope." With that she turned and ran over to where Toraeru and her father were.
"Shinzui?!" exclaimed Shoushiko, staring at the girl as she ran up.
"Dad, what's going on?" asked Shinzui, looking worried, "Why are you packing everything into that van?"
"We have to leave here," replied Shoushiko quickly, "Check your room for anything we missed and please do it as fast as you can. Everything except the furniture is in the van already."
"Um... Yes, dad," said Shinzui, rushing inside and up to her room to find everything gone, except for her furniture, "He seems really worried." She checked all over her room, but found nothing that she needed to bring out. "I wonder what he's worried about." She walked down the stairs and met her father in the hall.
"Got everything? Good," he said hastily, "Everything's loaded. We don't need to get the furniture."
"Where do you think you're going, Shoushiko?" asked a voice behind them as the door slammed.
&a mp;nbsp; The two whirled around to see Yamai standing there with a gun in his hand, pointed at the two. Gaidoku and Baikin appeared at the other two doorways that lead away from the hall and several assistants came out with them. All of them had guns, except for Gaidoku and Baikin, who were smirking at Shinzui and her father. Shoushiko immediately grabbed Shinzui protectively and glared at the scientists and assistants, but Shinzui looked at her father in surprise.
"You think you can protect that little girl?" asked Gaidoku, laughing, "It's you against all of us, Ookami, and I doubt you'd win."
"You might as well hand over the girl and be done with it," said Baikin smugly, "Or we'll just shoot her and forget our experiment."
Shinzui saw her father's eyes become fierce as he replied. "Never in your lifetime will you lay your hands on my daughter! I'm tired of this charade! I've had to raise her as if I hated her, just because you wanted to experiment on her! I'm not going to hand her over!"
"Fine then, we'll just shoot her," said Yamai, aiming his gun at Shinzui, "Two of my best assistants are blind because of you, girl. Now, you'll never even see your handiwork!"
&a mp;nbsp; Everything seemed to happen in a matter of seconds; Two shots rang out, Shinzui screamed, but she never felt anything hit. Drops of blood fell on to her face and she looked up to see Shoushiko bending over her, the front of his shirt dripping with blood. Her voice caught in her throat as she saw the look on her father's face when he looked down at her, tears streaming out of his eyes, not from pain, but from guilt.
"I'm sorry, Shinzui," he said, coughing a bit, "I'm sorry that I was a horrible father. I'm sorry for everything I put you through, said to you, and did to you. If I could, I'd go back in time and take everything back. I'd raise you with the love and caring you deserved." His tears fell on to Shinzui's face, mingling with the ones that were pouring from her eyes. "You've grown into a fine, young woman. You're the most precious thing in my life and you never even knew it. I only went along with their experiment because I thought it would protect you from them. I didn't know that they wanted to do more extensive research on you." He choked a bit and coughed.
"Dad!" exclaimed Shinzui, watching her father fall to the side, "Dad! Please! Don't die!" She sat up to look at her father.
Shoushiko looked at her, coughing, "I'm so sorry for everything that's happened. You're not their specimen. You're my daughter, your mother's daughter, and I'm proud of you... Not once have I told you how proud I was to have a smart, talented girl like you as my daughter." He strained to rest his hand against Shinzui's cheek. "Please, don't cry..."
"Dad... I never knew..." said Shinzui, her voice shaking from her crying, "I won't let you die!" She gripped his hand tightly, her tears dropping on it.
"This is becoming too sappy," said Gaidoku, "Just kill them both."
&a mp;nbsp; Several shots rang out, but they weren't from any of the assistants or Yamai, but they did drop their guns, clutching their hands. Toraeru was standing at the top of the stairs, a pistol in his hand and an angry look in his eyes. Baikin called the retreat, but not before he had them set fire to the house and before Toraeru could shoot anyone, the flames had been created and were spreading.
"I hope you enjoy the new lighter fluid that's now all over your house," said Yamai, "We developed it just for you."
&a mp;nbsp; The assistants and scientists retreated as the flames spread quickly over the various places that they had doused in the fluid. Shinzui coughed from the smoke and was already surrounded by flaming carpet. The nearby empty bookcase fell over, spreading fiery cinders and pieces of wood all over. The girl quickly protected Shoushiko from the various burning bits, getting burned herself, and made several vain attempts to get out of the blaze.
&a mp;nbsp; Help came in the form of Toraeru with a fire extinguisher, putting out the fires around Shinzui and Shoushiko, but the two had been badly burned and cut up a bit. Toraeru created a clear path to the door and kicked it out before going back to get Shinzui and her father. The girl stood up, coughing, but helped Toraeru carry her father out of the door and to fresh air.
&a mp;nbsp; Outside, Kurama had heard the shots and saw the scientists and assistants retreating as flames started to engulf the house. Seeing a pay phone nearby, he ran to it and called the fire department and hospital, telling them where the fire was and what happened. The fox returned to see the door get kicked out and Toraeru emerge carrying Shoushiko, but Kurama was slightly relieved when he saw Shinzui appear at the end with her father's feet. The two set Shoshiko on the ground and without another word, Shinzui fell to her knees, coughing. Toraeru and Kurama were both alarmed when Shinzui slumped over on her side, but sirens alerted Kurama to get out of the way as two fire engines and two ambulances blared down the street to the house.
&a mp;nbsp; News vans arrived with them and the whole scene was caught on camera as the fire was put out. Shinzui and Shoushiko were loaded on to the ambulances and driven to the hospital as Kurama snuck off to return to Ryuka's house. He walked into the house to find Yusuke and Kuwabara staring open mouthed at the TV as Ryuka fought to get out of Hiei's grip and get to Shinzui's house. All eyes turned to the fox as he walked in, looking very grim and shaken.
"You saw it all," said Ryuka, her piercing eyes on him, "You saw what happened. Is Shinzui going to be ok?"
"I don't know," answered Kurama, looking just as worried as Ryuka did, "She was walking, but then collapsed. Her father's in worse shape though. I think he may have been shot."
Ryuka's eyes widened. "W... What?! Shot?! This is SO not good!" She finally sat down in a chair, rubbing her temples. "Damn those scientists, I bet it was them! Dammit, poor Shin-chan. She's been through enough! Now this!" She cracked her knuckles. "If I ever find those scientists... I'm going to open a can of Whoop Ass on them!"
"Hey, it's the hospital!" exclaimed Yusuke, "The might have info on Shinzui and her dad." His shout directed all eyes to the screen as a lady came up.
"The three victims have been identified as Shoushiko Ookami, his daughter, Shinzui, and Shoushiko's bodyguard, Toraeru Kurohebi," said the reporter, as three pictures appeared on screen, "Mr. Ookami is in critical condition with two gun wounds in his chest and several burns. His daughter is in serious condition with several serious burns and large wounds. Mr. Kurohebi is in fair condition from smoke inhalation and some burns. From what Mr. Kurohebi told us, Mr. Ookami was shot by one of his scientist partners while protecting his daughter. The fiends fled the scene and left the house burning. We will give you an update on this story later this evening."
&a mp;nbsp; The room was silent with shock from these words and all eyes were on the TV. Kurama sat down on the couch, looking as if he had lost everything, and Hiei was just staring at the TV in shock. Ryuka had retreated to her chair, keeping hidden from the group, but soft sobs were heard from her spot. Yusuke and Kuwabara were completely speechless and looked at each other, both with an equally horrified and worried expression on their face. The day started interesting, but ended with a shaking event that even had Hiei concerned about the whole thing.

* * * * * * *

Well, wasn't that surprising? Toraeru isn't that much of a jerk after all and Shoushiko isn't a horrible person. Interesting how people show their true colors in the face of danger. Now that our main girl has been hospitalized, what shall be played out next? I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. It was certainly a hard one to write because it was so painful for the characters. Please review if you like.
* * * * * * *
