A/N: Hey Silver's Sister! Thanks for the review! I feel so loved and encouraged to do more! ^_^ Don't worry, I don't think I'll get writer's block, I have lots of ideas. Ok, incase anyone thought that I was ignoring or forgot the fact that Shinzui can sometimes use spirit energy, don't worry, she just hasn't needed to use it... She won't need to use it in this one either, but you will get to see something that makes things very interesting. Anyway, in our last chapter, those evil scientists attacked and Shinzui and her father were hospitalized. Everyone's worried, but never fear, things will clear up! ^_^ Please enjoy this chapter!

&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui felt a strange sensation blow across her face and could smell a fresh scent of flowers and grass around her. Her eyes opened to see a blue sky hanging above her as a few silvery clouds floated across it, obstructing the clarity of the vast heavens above her. As she sat up, the girl found herself staring at a large meadow full of flowers and grass. She got to her feet and noticed that the meadow seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see.
"Where am I?" she said, staring at the field around her, "This can't be real. I've never heard of such a beautiful place being on earth."
&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui suddenly remembered the fire, but when she looked down she saw no mark of injury on her body. Instead she found herself staring at a light blue tunic and light blue pants with a white sash tied around her waist. Another breeze ruffled her loose hair and clothing, which was slightly loose on her figure. The sounds of footsteps caught her attention and she whirled around to see a woman approaching her.
"Ah, Shinzui," said the woman, smiling, "It's nice to finally meet you."
&a mp;nbsp; The woman's white hair fell to her waist in soft waves and her hazel eyes glimmered with joy. She wore a white tunic and white pants with a green sash around her waist. Shinzui's mouth fell open when she noticed two white wolf ears poking out of the woman's hair and a white wolf tail swishing from side to side behind her. A golden halo was placed like a circlet around her forehead and a strange, yet faint golden glow flared out slightly around her form.
"Who are you?" asked Shinzui, staring at the woman.
"My name's Kijo Kotori," answered the woman, "But you may call me Kotori for short."
"What... What are you?" said Shinzui, giving Kotori a quizzical look, "And how do you know me?"
"You could say I'm a wolf demon turned angel," replied Kotori, chuckling, "I can't really tell you how I know you, but I have an important message for you." When she saw Shinzui's confused look, she continued. "Hun, you're in danger!"
"Danger? Are you talking about the scientists?" asked Shinzui.
"The scientists?" answered Kotori, scoffing, "The scientists and their wimpy assistants are chopped liver compared to Koumori and his gang."
"Koumori?!" exclaimed Shinzui, looking shocked, "That's the person that those two bat demons were muttering about when they attacked me."
"Bat demons attacked you already?!" said Kotori, staring at the girl, "Damn! They're already looking for you." She sighed. "That makes most of my message useless already. Well, I'll tell you more. When the change happens, be careful because there's more than bat demons looking for you." She saw Shinzui's look of worry and smiled. "Don't worry, you have a hidden ally waiting to come back. Now, hun, I believe it's time for you to wake up and greet the day. Bye."
"Wait!" exclaimed Shinzui, seeing Kotori turn to walk away, "How do you know me?! How do you know all this?! Please! Tell me!"
Kotori stopped and turned to look at the girl. "I'd tell you, but it's too early... You will find out sooner or later, but not now. Goodbye, hun, it was nice to see you."
&a mp;nbsp; Kotori walked away and with a gust of wind that blew Shinzui's hair across her face, the wolf demon was gone. The girl felt a sudden heaviness grow in her body and was inclined to lay down to relieve it. As she lay down in the grass, Shinzui got one last look at the sky before sleep seemed to over take her. A few seconds later, she opened her eyes to find not a sky, but a white ceiling above her and the sounds of beeping were heard every few seconds.
&a mp;nbsp; As Shinzui went to sit up, pain shot through her body and she gave up her attempt to sit upright. She groaned and looked around as best she could to see a hospital room before her. Mostly white with a few colorful objects and she saw with relief that her rose was in a small vase on the table, but it had more blue than before. The door opened, causing Shinzui to turn her head and see a doctor walk in with a clipboard and file. He smiled at her and helped her sit up by adjusting her bed.
"I see you're awake," said the doctor, "Your injuries are under control and healing nicely, but you inhaled a lot of smoke and you're lucky it didn't kill you."
"What about my father?" asked Shinzui, suddenly remembering what had happened to Shoushiko, "Is he alright?"
"We've been able to extract the bullets," replied the doctor, looking at some of the file, "And he will recover, but he'll be in the hospital longer than you will. In fact, you've healed so well, that you should be able to go home in about two or three days. Your leg is the only thing that may take at least a week to heal." He looked at his clipboard. "Something fell on it and the bone has a hairline crack in it, so you'll have to walk with crutches for a few days." He looked up at Shinzui. "Since your father will be in here for a few weeks and your house is gone, is there anywhere you can stay?"
"My friend, Ryuka, has a house where I can stay," said Shinzui, sighing, "I was going to stay there anyway."
"Well, I suggest you sit back and rest," said the doctor, smiling, "I believe one of your friends brought in this for you." He gestured to a large book on the table. "She said she'd be back when you were awake. I have to see to some other patients, so lay back, rest, and read your book if you want to. There's also a TV if you don't feel like reading."
"Thank you," said Shinzui as the doctor left the room and picked up the book to start reading it until she started falling asleep, "I guess I'll rest, but what time is it." She looked around and saw a clock. "Ten in the morning. Hmm. Ryuka's probably at school, so I guess I'll go ahead and take a nap.
&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui put the book on the table and lay back, adjusting her bed so she was laying down, and fell asleep. After several hours of dreamless sleep, the girl woke up again to see it was almost time for the schools to get out. She picked up her book again and started reading it until footsteps took her attention. The footsteps were followed by a knock on the door and a nurse stepped in after opening it. She nodded at someone in the hallway and gestured for the person to walk inside. To Shinzui's surprise, it wasn't one person, it was six people.
"Ryuka! Keiko! Guys!" exclaimed Shinzui, smiling at the group before her as they walked in and located chairs.
&a mp;nbsp; Ryuka ran over to her friend, a smile plastered on her face, one hand occupied by a few balloons and another being used to hold several cards and even a large one. Kurama had shown up with a bunch of roses and Keiko had brought a package. Yusuke and Kuwabara had turned up with some more cards and Hiei handed her a book that looked very familiar. Reading the cover the girl gave Hiei a look that sent Ryuka into gails of laughter.
"Hiei, this is one of my dad's journals," said Shinzui, raising an eyebrow, "Did you wander away with it hidden under your jacket or something?"
"I... Borrowed it for a few days," replied Hiei, looking away as Ryuka laughed at his expression.
"Uh huh, borrowed, aye?" said Shinzui, shrugging, "Oh well, I hope you found it interesting. Where did all these cards come from?"
"Some from classes, several from guys," replied Ryuka, giggling.
"A lot of guys came up to us and asked us to give these to you," said Yusuke, putting the cards in his hands on the table.
"Apparently, they were too scared to come in here and give them to you personally," said Kuwabara, dropping his bunch of cards on top of Yusuke's collection.
"I found this and thought you'd like it," said Keiko, handing Shinzui the package, which turned out to be a sketchbook and a fresh set of new pencils and erasers.
"This is perfect," said Shinzui, smiling at Keiko, "I have some new ideas for drawings running around in my head. This will come in very handy these next couple of days that I'm stuck here. Thank you!" Her eyes fell on Kurama and the roses.
"Thought you'd need some color in the room," said Kurama, handing her the roses, "So, I got you some flowers."
"Flowers? For me?" said Shinzui, looking at the roses, "Thank you, Shuichi, that's really sweet." She smiled at him and he smiled back.
"Your dog is going insane in my house, Shin-chan," said Ryuka after letting the two smile at each other for a few minutes, "He doesn't know where you are and I had to shut him in a closet with food, water, and some bones and chew toys before I could leave."
"Oh, I'm sorry about that," said Shinzui, chuckling, "Kouken's really protective of me, so he might get a little out of hand sometimes."
"He's left a lot of scratches on my door," said Ryuka, "Oh well, none of them are leaving permanent damage."
"That's good," said Shinzui, turning her head to look at Keiko, "So, what have I been missing at school? Anything interesting?"
"Nothing that will be hard to catch up in," replied Keiko, smiling.
"That's good," said Shinzui, "I'd hate to miss anything really important. Is that all? I would've thought that something more interesting would happen once I was gone. That seems to happen a lot."
"Don't you mean when you're around interesting things seem to happen?" said Ryuka slyly, grinning at her friend.
"Did you start at school yet?" asked Shinzui, looking at Ryuka.
"Not yet," replied Ryuka, sighing, "They have to locate my damn file and info. The staff is completely incompetent."
Shinzui suddenly thought of a question. "Any sign of the scientists?"
"No," replied Yusuke, before Ryuka could, "But that jerk, Tenma's been hanging around our school, trying to find you."
"I thought that guy would've given up by now," said Kuwabara, crossing his arms and looking annoyed.
"Are you kidding," said Shinzui, "It's Tenma, that asshole doesn't give up!" Everyone, except Ryuka, blinked at her. "I have a lot of other words I could say about him, but it would take too long to say."
"Are there any other reasons why he's so interested in you?" asked Hiei.
"Not that I know of," replied Shinzui, thinking, "He's always been after me even before we went out."
"Hell, he's been your shadow since he laid eyes on you!" exclaimed Ryuka, "You only went out with him because he did the charm act for a few months, then he went back to normal and started treating you like shit!" Her angry tirade continued for several minutes, but she eventually was silenced by her stomach growling. "Anyone else hungry?" There were confirmed nods and mutters from everyone, except Kurama. "Shin, could we run down to the cafeteria and get some food?"
"Sure," answered Shinzui, smiling, "I've already had food. Come back when you're finished."
"We won't be long," said Keiko as they left, "Atleast you aren't alone."
"Yeah," said Ryuka, grinning slyly, "You have Shuichi to keep you company." She, Yusuke, and Kuwabara laughed when Shinzui and Kurama both turned red. Hiei didn't say anything and Keiko shook her head with a sigh.
After the group left, Shinzui looked at Kurama, "Sorry about that. She's still trying to play matchmaker..." She smiled a bit.
Kurama pulled over a chair and sat down. "How's your dad doing?"
"He should recover," replied Shinzui, sighing, "But he'll be in here for a few weeks." Her hands clenched the sheets. "I never knew that... He was forced to act like he hated me as I grew up. He wanted to protect me from their experiment, but he didn't know that they had bigger plans."
"So, your father protected you from the gunfire?" asked Kurama.
"Yes," answered Shinzui, staring at the fabric covering her, "He wouldn't let them take me, so they tried to shoot me... But... He stood in front of me and protected me." Her eyes had become her sad crystal blue. "After all these years of thinking that he hated me... He was just trying to keep me from being a specimen to those damn scientists." Tears started to slide down her cheeks and land on the blanket. "Dammit, my mother and Mamoru both died because of me and now my father nearly died because of me. Maybe I should just let those scientists lock me away in some cell, so I don't cause anymore problems..." She felt a hand brush her tears away gently and she looked at Kurama.
"Don't say that about yourself," he said, his hand still on her cheek, "No one deserves to be locked away in a cell... Especially you." He paused a bit before continuing. "If it's ok for me to ask... But who is Mamoru?"
Shinzui sighed and after a few seconds, nodded. "Mamoru Tenrai was one of Tenma's lackeys for a while and was just as bad as them... Apparently until I was dragged into the picture. It's because of Mamoru that Tenma didn't cause any serious or permanent damage when he hit me." She closed her eyes while placing one of her hands on her heart and continued with a soft smile on her face. "He was the only decent one in the gang. Never picked on kids, never picked on girls, and he kept the guys from raping every pretty girl they came across. The only things he ever did was steal minor things, beat up members of rival gangs, pull a couple of pranks, and some other minor stuff... He had his own honor code, but Tenma thought it was bullshit." She opened her eyes a little and sighed.
"Honor code?" said Kurama, watching her, "Like Kuwabara's?" He remembered that Kuwabara had talked about his honor code when they were at Ryuka's house.
"Fairly similar," answered Shinzui, looking sentimental, "Except a few things were different. Either way... He and I got really close whenever Tenma left me at their hangout to go and terrorize the neighborhood. Tenma's only rule was that I shouldn't be around when they go on their little raids, so he left me with Mamoru..." She chuckled a bit. "Mamoru was their intelligence and wit, not really into the raiding. He was really polite and sweet to me, but whenever Tenma was around, he went back to his old self to hide it. He even patched me up whenever Tenma hit me. He was a smart kid, but had gotten into the gang and couldn't get out. We talked about our ideals and philosophies... He had an excellent outlook on how people should be treated and how to help people in need." Her cheeks went slightly red and she smiled a bit.
"Was there more to this friendship of yours?" asked Kurama.
Shinzui looked at him in surprise, but answered. "Yes... I still remember that night. He told me that he couldn't stand that Tenma was abusing me so much and that I was practically trapped in the gang. The rest of the boys were out on another raid when he told me his plan of getting me out of my situation and..." She clenched her fist as she rested it on her chest. "He said he loved me... I was shocked at his words, but... I felt the same way... H... He knew about my abilities and still saw me as a person. A human being and treated me like an equal."
"What happened to him?" said Kurama, giving her a quizzical look as her expression changed from sentimental to sadness.
"We started seeing each other whenever we could," replied Shinzui with a sigh, "During all those times, all we did was talk, but... a few times..." She turned red in embarrassment. "He did kiss me... Though unlike Tenma, who sometimes groped as he kissed..." She shuddered at the memory. "Mamoru was a complete gentleman about it... But... I guess all good things must come to an end if the easily angered gang leader found out." She shut her eyes, tears starting to trickle down her cheeks. "I don't know how Tenma found out about Mamoru and me, but he made sure that he wasn't the only one who would pay for the 'betrayal'." She made the gesture of direct quoting when she said 'betrayal'.
"What happened?" questioned Kurama, watching her carefully.
Shinzui's eyes opened and the tears continued. "Mamoru and I were meeting at our tree in the park..."
"Your tree?" said Kurama, looking at the girl quizzically.
"The cherry blossom tree where we first met," said Shinzui, sighing, "That was our special place where we always met to talk. That night while we were talking, Mamoru finally said that I should run away and he knew how to get me out. He delved into his plan, explaining everything from where I should go and how it would work, but... He was listening..." Shinzui clenched the blanket in her hands. "Tenma ambushed us with the rest of his gang and decided that we needed to be punished. He had the rest of the guys hold me while he fought with Mamoru. The two were equally matched, but Tenma always holds a trump card to get rid of his opponent." She sniffed a bit.
"Trump card?" said Kurama, "You mean a hidden weapon or last resort?"
"Yes," answered Shinzui, "Tenma always carries a hidden sword on his back. It looks like a stick, but part of it is the hilt to a real blade. Mamoru ran to attack him and Tenma whipped out that damn sword of his to deal Mamoru a bad injury to his side. I remember watching Mamoru writhe on the ground in pain as Tenma stood over him... A horrible look in his eyes. He..." Her voice broke slightly as she continued. "Tenma stabbed him through the chest with that sword..." She buried her face in her hands. "He killed Mamoru... And then laughed about it before hitting me and threatening me with the same fate. Being the coward I was at the time... I backed down easily. I wasn't even allowed to go to Mamoru's funeral... I managed to sneak off every now and then to put flowers on his grave." She lowered her hands to look at Kurama. "That's why I'm so afraid of Tenma, but I decided to break it off with Tenma after another month of abuse. After I told him, he freaked and hit me worse than he ever had before. I tried to stand up to him, but he brought out that damn sword and hit me with it a few times." She covered part of her face with one of her hands. "That bastard tried to..." Tears were dripping down her cheeks again. "He tried to rape me that night... I was lucky that someone heard me screaming and dragged him off me before he got what he wanted. I still have nightmares about all of this..." Her body was shaking from the memory, but she stopped when she felt a hand get placed over her own.
&a mp;nbsp; Kurama was holding the hand that was clutching her blanket fabric and he used his other hand to brush the tears off her face, unable to find any words to say. Shinzui's eyes were staring into his own and the two were completely silent for several minutes, yet an unspoken message seemed to pass between them. Shinzui smiled a bit through her tears and she used her free hand to wipe her eyes, sniffing slightly. She took a deep breath to calm herself and smiled at Kurama again.
"I don't know if scars from events like that will ever heal," said Kurama, not quite thinking his words through, "But if you will let me, I can try to help them heal."
Shinzui gave him a gentle smile and nodded. "Thank you, Shuichi. You don't know how much those words mean to me." She smiled even more. "You're the first person I've told about Mamoru, other than Ryuka. Though... Every time I go to his grave... It's as if I can hear him speak to me when the wind blows." She gave a short, embarrassed, chuckle. "Kind of childish, I know."
"Not really," replied Kurama, glad to see that her mood was brightening, "Unless you're hearing voices telling you to burn things." He chuckled. "That's when you're going to need a bit of help."
"You're too much," laughed Shinzui, smiling even more, "I haven't heard any voices telling me to burn things, but I have had uncontrollable urges to attempt making a voodoo doll of Tenma and burning it. Is that bad?"
"I think that's within reason," chuckled Kurama, also smiling.
&a mp;nbsp; The two talked on a much happier scale for a half and hour until Ryuka, Keiko, and the guys returned from their adventure in the cafeteria. Ryuka had to explain that they couldn't stay too much longer for the day and may not be able to come back. Apparently, Hiei had gotten them in trouble for raiding the fridge of its Jello and stealing it from unsuspecting people. He had injured some of the staff when they tried to take the Jello away from him and destroyed some equipment when he fled from the scene.
"I think he's gotten addicted to Jello," was Ryuka's comment to Shinzui, "I'm sorry that we won't be able to visit. We were all banned from visiting the hospital for a month, unless we needed to be treated here."
"All this over Jello?" said Kurama, looking at Hiei, "Really, Hiei, I had no idea that you were into Jello."
"Apparently, he just discovered it today," sighed Ryuka, shaking her head, "Honestly, that's the worst display I've ever seen, but it was really funny when he made that old woman think that her Jello was haunted."
&a mp;nbsp; The group were allowed to talk for another hour, but they were dismissed by some of the nurses, except for Kurama, who had nothing to do with the Jello incident. Shinzui said goodbye to all of them and received a hug from Ryuka before she left. The girl sighed and grinned at Kurama before the two burst out laughing about the whole story. Ryuka peeked in and watched the two for a few minutes, smiling at the scene before her as Kurama sat down to talk to Shinzui again.
This guy is exactly what you need, Shin-chan, thought Ryuka as she walked down the hallway, Maybe he can help free you from your nightmares. She ran to catch up with the others as they left and smiled at Hiei.
"I know you really are addicted to Jello," said Ryuka, chuckling, "But I should thank you."
"Thank me for what?" asked Hiei, eyeing the girl with a raised eyebrow.
"Well, because of the problems you caused, Shin-chan can finally have some quality time with that boy," replied Ryuka, laughing a bit at Hiei's confused look "Have you not noticed the chemistry between those two? They get along really well and Shuichi just might be the light of hope for her." She looked at the sky as they walked down the street. "Shinzui's been stuck in her nightmares about Tenma for far too long. She needs someone who is willing to help her heal the scars left from those memories." She turned her gaze to look at Hiei. "The others went home, but... Do you think you'd like to come back to my house?"
Hiei was slightly taken aback by this question. "Why?"
"Well, I'd like some company," answered Ryuka, "But I also have some questions for you. Besides, I'll make Jello."
&a mp;nbsp; After these words, Hiei agreed, but he was also slightly intrigued by Ryuka's tone. There was always a secretive glimmer in her eyes and it was as if she knew something that he didn't. The fire demon ignored these things for the time being and followed Ryuka back to the house. he completely missed the fact that a pair of red eyes gleamed in the shadows of the tree, watching them leave and then turning to look at the hospital with a fierce look in them.

BOOYAH! I leave you with a tiny bit of a cliffhanger! I think o.O() yeah, nothing MAJOR went wrong ^_^ Only minor! hehe. I wanted to have Hiei be a bit crazy over some sort of food and Jello was the first food to pop into my head... Probably 'cause i'm hungry and I was thinking about making Jello. ^_^ Yep, there's your story about the other person who died for Shinzui. Yeah, Mamoru is Tuxedo Mask's japanese name, but it means Protector. I thought that the guy who protected Shinzui deserved a name that meant something good. So I have protector. Tantei means sound of the wind. Why do you think I chose that? Any ideas *wink* It might have significance later on.... Or maybe it won't.... I really hope you enjoyed that chapter... Oh yeah! More of a shout out to the reviewer known as Silver's Sister! There ya' go! ^_^ A bit more romantic feeling between Kurama and Shinzui! Don't worry, there will be more and hopefully none where she's telling a story like that.

SNEAK PEEK!:

** What's going on with Hiei and Ryuka, what did she want to talk to him about?

** Who did those freaky red eyes belong to anyway?! A demon? A scientist? Or worse... A Tenma! o.o

** Yes! Kurama and Shinzui get another little romantic scene. No! It's ruined by an intruder! Damn you, intruder!

* * * * * * * *

Find out on the next wild and crazy chapter of Aoitsuki Yurai! ^_^
