A/N: Booyah! ^_^ Another chapter! This is where it starts to delve deep into the plot. In our last chapter, Shinzui had a weird dream, her friends came to visit, and had a little trouble with Hiei and Jello. We also learned about Mamoru Tenrai. Now, it's time to see what's going on between Hiei and Ryuka and whose red eyes those were in the shadows. Whoo! Please Enjoy!

&a mp;nbsp; Hiei and Ryuka returned to Ryuka's house to find Kouken barking loudly and scratching at the closet. The girl sighed and let him out, only to have the dog attack the door, trying to get outside. Giving a groan of aggravation, Ryuka leashed the dog and walked him outside so he could do his business. She brought him back about thirty minutes later and set him loose in the house. She found a comfy chair to collapse on with a hand over her face, looking exhausted and out of breath.
"That was... Odd," said Hiei, sitting down on the couch, "Did he try to drag you to the hospital or something?"
"Gee, ya' think," muttered Ryuka sarcastically, "He knows she's there, but we can't take him in there since we were banned."
"So, what did you want to ask me?" said Hiei, watching the girl as she shifted her position so her feet were dangling over the arm rest.
"I need to know about these bat demons," answered Ryuka with a serious expression, "And if Shin-chan has done anything... Odd."
"Why are you so interested in these things?" asked Hiei, raising an eyebrow at the girl, who shot him a glare.
"Hey, I'm asking the questions here," snapped Ryuka, swinging her legs around to stand up, the nice demeanor changing in an instant, "If my best friend is threatened by Koumori again, I need details!"
"... You know Koumori?" asked Hiei, giving Ryuka an intense look.
Ryuka sat down looking a bit nervous. "Um... Well, I uh... I've heard the name before..." She searched for more words. "I... I don't necessarily know the bastard..." Shaking off her sudden show of unsureness, she fixed her eyes on Hiei. "I need you to tell me what those bat demons have said... If they said anything."
"I'm beginning to wonder why I should tell you," said Hiei, folding his arms in front of his chest, looking stubborn.
Ryuka's eyes narrowed dangerously, but there was a hesitant glint in them. "Hiei, I need to know! It's vital to protecting Shinzui."
"Maybe I've forgotten what those bat demons said," stated Hiei, looking completely nonchalant as he stood up, "In fact, I don't have a very good memory, so the conversations are very faint."
"Bad memory my ass..." muttered Ryuka, glowering at the fire demon, "Since when do demons have a bad memory. I've never heard of it."
"What did you say?!" exclaimed Hiei, staring at Ryuka.
"Um... Nothing," replied Ryuka, looking away, "I didn't say a thing."
"Yes, you did," said Hiei, walking over to Ryuka, "You said something about demons and memory. What was it?" When Ryuka stayed silent he walked over and placed a hand on each arm rest, staring the girl right in the eyes. "What was it?"
"Ya' know, you're kind of cute when you have that look on your face," said Ryuka slyly, but seeing that Hiei was not phased by this, "Fine... I said since when do demons have a bad memory, I've never heard of it."
"How do you know I'm a demon?" asked Hiei, narrowing his eyes.
"No human could ever have that speed when fighting," answered Ryuka, "Also, your forehead was glowing during the fight with Tenma that night."
"You... You saw that?" said Hiei, completely surprised at this comment.
"Duh, the dark of night and a strange glow on someone's forehead," stated Ryuka sarcastically, "Like that's really hard to spot." She saw Hiei's look and rolled her eyes. "Tch, don't get your pants in a bunch about it. I've met demons before, why should it be weird."
"You've met demons?" said Hiei, staring at her, "How?!"
"I've met you before," replied Ryuka, smiling, "But you don't remember. Unfortunately." She sighed. "You've gotten cuter since we last met." She grinned at Hiei's confusion. "Though, you wouldn't remember it." Without warning, Ryuka raised her head up to press her lips against Hiei's, but after a bit she broke it off. "Of course, I don't know if that'll help bring your memory back." She nudged the completely shocked fire demon aside and stood up, giggling at Hiei's startled look.
"How... How... Why..." babbled Hiei, completely confused by her actions.
"I know you and other demons through the usual fighting business," giggled Ryuka, flashing him a smug smile, "And I have one hell of a set of techniques to use on enemies."
"That's good," said an arrogant voice behind them, "Because you'll need every last one of those techniques, Ryuka."
&a mp;nbsp; A bat demon walked out of the shadows, his fierce, red eyes narrowed at Ryuka, who was glaring back at him with equal dislike. His long, black hair fell to his shoulder blades and a pair of powerful-looking bat wings were folded on his back. His skin was pallid, yet his form looked strong and healthy. He sneered at Ryuka, showing a pair of fangs as he did so and the girl responded with a snarl. He wore a simple black tunic and pants with a red sash, but a sword was sheathed on his back between his wings.
"Well, well, well," sneered Ryuka, narrowing her eyes, "Koumori... I see you're out of your secret place. What the fuck do you want?"
"You know exactly what I want, dragon," growled Koumori.
"Dragon?" said Hiei, staring at Ryuka, who ignored him.
"Why don't you just go drown yourself, douche bag" suggested Ryuka, waving her hand, "I'm not giving you any information."
"Don't test my patience," snarled Koumori, taking a swipe at the girl with a clawed hand, but Ryuka fended him off, knocking him into the wall.
"How about a little taste of fire," snickered Ryuka, creating a ball of fire in her hand, "I've been dying to burn all that hair off your head."
"Try me, dragon!" roared Koumori, leaping up to attack Ryuka, only to meet a blast of fire to the chest.
"That's Miss Dragon to you, schmuck," growled Ryuka, putting her hands on her hips, "Now you've gotten me angry."
&a mp;nbsp; Hiei was staring at Ryuka in disbelief after she had hit Koumori with the fire attack because the girl no longer looked human at all. She had a pair of black dragon wings on her back, a black dragon tail, and a pair of black dragon ears had replaced her human ones. She smiled, showing fangs and flexed the claws on her hands, glaring at the bat demon with fiery eyes. Koumori suddenly disappeared from sight and reappeared in front of Ryuka, grabbing her by the shirt to lift her off the ground.
"You will tell me where she is," snarled Koumori, a murderous look in his eyes, "Or I will slit your throat."
"Oh, yeah, that's really scaring me," commented Ryuka sarcastically, "Get your damn claws off of me, you dirty rat with wings."
"Don't play with me, dragon," growled Koumori, raising one of his hands to hit her, "Tell me where Shinzui is!"
"Go ahead and hit me, asshole," said Ryuka, glaring at him.
Koumori hit her hard in the face and threw her into the wall. "I'm tired of your games, Ryuka. Tell me where she is!" He swiped at her, but Ryuka, having no where to go, blocked it with her arm.
"Yeowch!" exclaimed Ryuka, holding her bleeding arm, "Damn, that was a really bad idea." She saw Koumori raise his hand for another attack, but was stopped when Kouken pounced on him, clamping his sharp jaws over the bat's arm.
"AH!" roared Koumori, trying to get the dog off, "Get off me, you damn mutt!" He managed to shake Kouken off, but found a large blast of fiery, spirit energy just waiting to hit him. "Dammit... I'll find that blasted girl, Ryuka. No matter how much you protect her. I will get her back." The bat crashed through the window and flew off.
"Damn that bastard to hell," muttered Ryuka, reverting to her human form easily, "A bit surprised are we, Hiei?" She looked at the fire demon, who was staring at her in complete shock. "This'll be one hell of a thing to explain to you." She made him sit on the couch and sat down next to him to start telling him what was going on. "Look, I'm not here just because my parents wanted me to go to school here. My parents are psychics, but only well known in Makai and Reikai. They sent me here because they knew what was going to happen to Shinzui and they wanted me to make sure she got through everything. She's been my best friend for years and I know why she has that blank spot in her memory."
"You know about that?" said Hiei, recovering from his shock.
"Of course I do," stated Ryuka, yawning, "I made it."
"What do you mean you made it?" asked Hiei, staring at her.
"Shin-chan went through a lot those years," replied Ryuka, sighing, "After her last adventure, she asked me if I could block the memories, so she could return to having fairly normal life. She didn't want to be who she had become and it was a really painful life. Shin-chan couldn't be with the person she wanted to be with and she had to keep wiping memories... Even his." Ryuka sighed and shook her head. "It's not really my place to tell you who she was when the girl doesn't even remember, but you'd know her if I told you."
"Can you tell me how I might know her?" asked Hiei.
"Well, She was pretty well known in Makai and Reikai during those years," replied Ryuka, "Famous for what she did around there."
"What was her occupation?" questioned Hiei.
"She was a demon hunter," answered Ryuka, "She worked alone for a bit, but then got recruited by KoEnma. She hunted down and caught some demons, helped with cases, and got information. She also fought in the Dark Tournament atleast twice, though she didn't have much of a choice... Anyway, if you ever remember her, don't mention it. She can't learn about it yet. Promise me you won't tell her about any of this."
Hiei nodded in agreement and the two shook hands. Ryuka kept her end of the deal by making Jello and they ate it while talking about other things. The rest of the day passed without any problems

* * * * * * *

&a mp;nbsp; The next day, Shinzui was up with her sketchbook, which had several pictures in it already, resting on the knee of the leg she could use and drawing a picture of Kotori. I don't understand what she was trying to say, thought Shinzui as she drew the woman's hair, A hidden ally? A change? I just dont understand. There was a knock on the door and Shinzui looked up from her sketch as it opened.
"Shuichi," she said, grinning at the red-haired boy as he walked in with another small bundle of roses, "It's great to see you. More flowers for me?" She smiled even more at him. "Thank you."
"You seem to like them," said Kurama, also smiling, "So, I figured you would like another color." He noticed that her arms still had some bandages on them.
"Yes, a white room needs color," chuckled Shinzui as Kurama added the roses to vase with the ones from the day before, "Now I have a bit of red, a bit of yellow, and a hint of blue."
Kurama pulled over a seat and sat down. "How's everything going?"
"Things are looking up," answered Shinzui, "My father's healing without any problems, but he hasn't woken up yet." She sighed. "The doctor said he might be asleep for a few days."
"What's that?" asked Kurama, catching a glance of the picture in her lap.
"Oh, this?" said Shinzui, looking at the sketchbook, "Well, it's one of the images running around in my head. I'm glad Keiko managed to get some colored pencils to me, too. All I had to do was promise to show my pictures to her and so far, I have a few pictures. Being stuck in bed is not something I'm good at." She laughed a bit. "I get bored easily, so I've been drawing as much as I can. Would you like to see?" She smiled shyly at Kurama, who nodded as she handed it to him.
&a mp;nbsp; Each page held a full body drawing of each one of her friends as well as a close up picture of the head and their name. There was a page for Hiei, Yusuke, Kuwabara, Keiko, Ryuka, Botan, himself, and even a sketch of Kouken. There was a full group picture and a cute picture of Yusuke and Keiko together. He stopped at the one that Shinzui had been working on and stared at it. It was almost done, but the image of a demon in the sketchbook caught him by surprise.
"Where did this one come from?" he asked, pointing at the picture.
"A dream I had before I woke up here," replied Shinzui, taking the sketchbook and looking at it, "She called herself Kijo Kotori and... She wanted to warn me about something..." She shut the sketchbook and put it on the table. "It was just a dream, but... It seemed real. Kotori mentioned a hidden ally and a change that I'll go through. She also said there's more than bat demons and scientists looking for me, but I..." She stopped, looking embarrassed. "Man, listen to me go on about a dream as if it really meant something..."
"It's nothing to be ashamed of," said Kurama, smiling at her, "I've had dreams that seem real and I've talked about them before."
"So I'm not losing my mind?" asked Shinzui, chuckling.
"No, I highly doubt you are," answered Kurama, laughing a bit, "Every now and then, anyone could have a dream like that. How's your leg?"
"They said I can start walking with crutches today," replied Shinzui, grinning, "I was going to go down to the cafeteria for some food, want to come?" She giggled and winked. "Though, we won't get any Jello. They're fresh out since Hiei's raid yesterday."
Kurama chuckled and nodded. "Would you like some help?"
"Could you?" said Shinzui, shifting her position so she was sitting on the bed, "I'm just lucky I don't have to drag an IV around."
&a mp;nbsp; Shinzui's legs had some bandages on them, but her left one had a splint and thick bandages around the calf. She had managed to get a real set of bed clothes and a robe. She slipped her feet into some slippers and pulled on a light blue robe that cut off at mid-calf. Kurama retrieved the crutches from their corner and carried them over to Shinzui. He helped her stand up and get balanced with one under each arm.
"How did you manage to get a robe?" asked Kurama as they traveled down the hallway.
"Yume-san sent it to me," replied Shinzui, giggling, "I'm glad she sent the clothes, too. I really don't like the stuff the hospital hands out."
&a mp;nbsp; The two wandered slowly down the halls until they reached an elevator to take down to the cafeteria. They made their way through the line, but Kurama insisted on carrying Shinzui's tray for her because of the crutches and they went to a table. Shinzui set her crutches against an empty chair and began to eat the food in front of her. They talked a bit more about common, simple topics such as hobbies and interests. Upon finishing their meal, the two trooped back to Shinzui's hospital room and she got back in the bed rather reluctantly as Kurama put the crutches back in their lonely corner.
"That was a productive piece of time," commented Shinzui, laying back against the bed, which was still situated in a way that let her sit up, "I didn't know I could ever find someone other than Mamoru that could understand any of the philosophies I've come up with."
"They make sense," said Kurama, sitting down in the chair right by her bed, "I didn't think anyone would ever understand mine either."
"Philosophy's a fun subject," said Shinzui, smiling, "I never thought I'd ever find someone who could understand me at all."
"We're quite similar," said Kurama, resting a hand on her's, "In several ways." He smiled at the girl, who was blushing a bit.
"Yes, we are," said Shinzui, smiling back at him and taking his and in her's, "Thank you so much, Shuichi. I was giving up hope that I'd ever find someone worth living for..." Her eyes softened. "Someone who's actually tried to help me... It means a lot to me that you're here." She leaned forwards until their faces were inches apart. "I know it sounds sappy, but your kindness has shown me a path towards the healing of my scars from the past." She moved her head towards Kurama's, but the window behind her was blown inwards, scattering glass all over the area in front of it, and Shinzui's head snapped in the direction of the window.
"Well, well, well," said Koumori, flying through the window, which was now devoid of any glass, "Looks like I found you, Shinzui." His eyes moved to Kurama. "You... You look familiar." His eyes narrowed at the red-head before widening in shock and recognition. "Kurama... Now I remember you! You're the human form of that blasted fox demon, Youko Kurama!"
"Kurama?" said Shinzui, staring at Kurama in shock, "But isn't your name Shuichi Minamino?"
"He gave you his human name?" asked Koumori, scoffing, "Guess he didn't want you to get involved with any demonic activities." He laughed. "It's a bit late for that, fox. She's been involved in demonic activities since the age of 13, but now she doesn't remember them." He smirked at the two. "How ironic that the wolf finds her fox again."
"W... What?" stammered Shinzui, looking confused, "Wolf? What the hell are you talking about?!"
"That rose of yours will show you very soon," smirked Koumori, his eyes gazing intensely at the girl, "Though I have to say, your human form is quite lovely, but I miss your old self."
Shinzui plucked her rose from the vase and stared at it before tucking it into the pocket of her robe. "Shuichi... Kurama... What ever you prefer to be called... Please help me get out of here..."
"I have plans for you, pup," said Koumori, smiling sinisterly at the girl, "I can't let you leave." He lunged for Shinzui, but she shrieked and rolled out of the bed, landing hard on the floor. "You're mine, wolf." He reached for her again.
"Go away!" screamed Shinzui, making a sweeping motion with her hand and a blast of silver energy was sent forth, knocking the bat into a wall.
"Why you little bitch," snarled Koumori, getting up, "You'll pay for that!" He went for her again, but was slapped away by a thorny whip.
"To get to her," said Kurama, standing in front of Shinzui, "You'll have to get through me, Koumori."
"Good idea," said Koumori, creating a blast of energy in his hand, "I was going to kill you anyway."
&a mp;nbsp; Koumori threw the energy at Kurama, who tried to hit it back, but the thing exploded, sending him and Shinzui across the room. The girl hit the wall hard and slid to the ground, completely winded. Kurama got up, wincing slightly from a gash on his arm from the explosion and walked over to check on Shinzui. Kurama glared at the bat demon before creating a storm of petals, picking up Shinzui, and disappearing from the room. The bat found the two gone when the petals cleared and, roaring wildly, burst through the wall to find them, but only met an empty hallway.
"Damn you, Kurama!" yelled Koumori, hearing his voice echo a bit, "No matter where you take that girl, I will find her!" He launched himself through the empty window and flew off, releasing a horrible, screeching, roar.
Kurama sauntered out from an empty room with Shinzui in his arms. "We were here the whole time and he didn't realize it."
"Ugh... What hit me?" groaned Shinzui, opening her eyes a bit, "... Shuichi... What's going on with you and that demon?"
"Since you now know my other identity," answered Kurama, "You can call me Kurama if you want. I'm sorry for keeping it a secret, but I didn't know you would get so involved one day."
"It's alright, I understand," said Shinzui, smiling a bit, "Some things have to be kept a secret until the right time. I still have some of my own you know... I'm going to take a nap now... Good night." With that she closed her eyes and went to sleep in Kurama's arms.
&a mp;nbsp; Kurama set her in the clean bed and pulled the blankets up to her shoulders. He brushed some hair out of the girl's face and smiled fondly at her as he watched her sleep. The moment was broken when some nurses and a doctor rushed over and started asking him what happened. He managed to find an explanation for the window that didn't involve a demon and luckily the doctor and nurses were convinced. One of the nurses cleaned and bandaged his arm before allowing him to sit back down with Shinzui. One of the other nurses moved the various items that belonged to Shinzui over to her new room and when they left, Kurama gently took the rose from Shinzui's robe pocket and placed it in the vase.
"The rose will show her what she is," whispered Kurama, looking from the rose to Shinzui, "I wonder what Koumori meant." He sighed and took Shinzui's hand in his. "He called her wolf... What did he mean by that? I guess only the rose will tell when the time comes." Kurama glanced at the rose and saw that it was nearly all blue, except for about an inch of white at the tips. "It's slowly been turning blue... I wonder if it'll reveal its secrets when all the white is gone."
&a mp;nbsp; Kurama stayed with Shinzui until visiting hours were over and as he walked away from the hospital, he looked up at the window that he knew was Shinzui's. The fox turned and walked back to his house, but found Ryuka and Hiei cleaning up glass in front of Ryuka's house, which was not too far down the street. He wandered over to see what was going on and noticed that there was a strange difference in Ryuka's aura. The two looked up at the fox as he walked over.
"Hey, Shuichi," said Ryuka, smiling a bit, "Or should I say, Kurama?"
Kurama stopped. "How do you know my other name?"
"I've known for a while," replied Ryuka, laughing at the fox's astonished expression, "Don't look so surprised. I'll explain tomorrow because it's getting really late and I need sleep. Hiei, if care to board here, I have an extra room or two."
"I'll be fine," replied Hiei, shrugging, "I'm used to sleeping outside."
"I insist that you stay in a room here," said Ryuka, putting her hands on her hips, "Koumori's loose somewhere and I don't think you should run into the schmuck alone." She looked at Kurama and cut him off as he opened his mouth to speak. "I'll explain how I know about that demon tomorrow. It's getting late and it's been an insane day."
Too true, thought Kurama as he returned home to finish his homework and go to sleep, wondering what other things will surface the next day.

* * * * * * *
