“I think I wanna eat Keiko.”

Kurama nearly choked, going into a coughing fit. If Yusuke wasn't so upset at the moment he would've been laughing his ass off at the kitsune's uncharacteristic fall from grace. After a minute of re-collecting himself the crimson haired youth took a deep breath, “What in the world makes you think that?”

“I… I was at the diner and, I don't know,” he struggled to find a way to describe what he'd experienced. Kurama, while listening, was also picking up all the triscuts that had fallen on the floor when he dropped the box. “All I could think about was blood and flesh and then my fangs-” He reached up to find they were gone, “They were back. You're a demon, is that what happens when you're about to feed?”

The kitsune began picking crumbs out of his hair, “Yusuke, I'm going to be honest with you.” He looked up and met his gaze, “I'm a youko- a fox. My kind pretty much eats anything but rocks. I've never had to eat a human to maintain my life force so I don't know if that's the current case.” He sighed realizing why the former detective was freaking out, “The best thing you can do right now is wait, perhaps it's just a passing thing.” He closed his eyes for a moment and an idea struck him,

“We'll call Kuwabara and I'll prove it to you.” Needless to say Kurama was confident his friend was stretching the truth in his panic. “There is no sense in jumping to conclusions. I'll be right back.”

So half an hour later the orange haired teen mentioned in their conversation sat beside them. “What's this all about?” He asked accepting what was left of the poor abused box of triscuts.

“It's a little experiment; nothing to worry about.” Kurama continued his game of minesweeper on the computer.

“Don't press that button, there's a mine.”

“Thanks Kuwabara,” he avoided that space and continued playing. They were silent for a bit before there was a knock on the window. All heads turned to see Hiei perched on a tree branch outside. Yusuke stood to let him in, “Hey party crasher, what brings you back to the Ningenkai?”

“Break from patrol,” the short male leapt inside shaking the rain from his cloak and gravity defying hair, “And when I sensed Yusuke's power going haywire I had the feeling I was going to be amused.” He looked the teen over carefully, “I'm disappointed.”

Kurama raised an eyebrow, “You felt his power?” He was surprised, after all Hiei had to have been all the way near Genkai's at that time. Surely he, who had just as much awareness and was much closer, would've felt his power too. Perhaps it was because he was so wrapped up in his work.

“Yes, but obviously it was a false alarm.” He leaned back against the wall unprepared for the question he was about to be asked.

“Hiei, do you eat humans?” Yusuke had sat adjacent to him on Kurama's bed hoping for an answer.

The demon looked at him as if he were crazy, “I wouldn't eat a human if it cooked itself.”
The raven haired boy sighed, “So you can't eat them either?” Hiei didn't know why his teammate cared, “I'm perfectly capable of eating humans; they taste terrible is all.”

“Hey!” Kuwabara pointed a finger in their direction, “I am taking offence to that statement, shrimp!”

“Is that fool talking again?” He sent a glare in the teen's direction, “Why is he even here?”

Kurama won his game and turned around in time to answer, “Because Yusuke is going to eat him.”

The room was dead silent for a moment, then…

“WHAT?!”

Both Yusuke and Kuwabara jumped out of their seats staring at the red-haired fox. Hiei however was torn between shock and amusement. He knew the kitsune had to be joking.

“I'm not going to eat Kuwabara!”

“You better not eat me Urameshi!”

The two turned on each other completely ignoring Kurama and the “I'm kidding” line. After a few brief insults to one another a fist fight broke out. Sighing the teen watching sweatdropped. Once all the punches had been thrown and the kicks delivered he spoke, “As I was going to say…”

All eyes turned once more to him. “If you're appetite for humans was aroused, Yusuke, instead of pounding poor Kuwabara's face into my carpet you would've been gnawing his arm off.” Yusuke released his hold on his friend's hair, his face breaking into a grin.

“Kurama, you're a genius!” He stood up, “I should go and apologize to Keiko for running off. Do you guys want to come? She'd like the company.”

Hiei shrugged, Kuwabara agreed, and Kurama went off to inform his mother. In a few seconds they were out on the street with umbrellas. The diner wasn't very far, a five minute walk at most.

“Remind me again why I had to be the lab rat.” The orange haired teen was directing this question at the fox.

“Well I didn't know who else to use…” he splashed through a puddle, “Besides even if Yusuke did try to eat you, I would've done something.”

They rounded the corner to the Yukimura Family Diner and entered after shaking off their umbrellas. The restaurant had only a few people inside since it was nearly closing time.

“Yusuke,” Keiko looked up from cleaning a table, “Do you feel better?”

He laughed walking over to her, “Yeah, sorry I didn't get to finish the meal you worked so hard to make.”

“Oh, no, it's okay, really,” she went back behind the counter and washed her hands, “The broccoli may have been old. It's my fault. Are you still hungry? I can make something fresh.”

“Thanks,” He sat down at the counter while his friends took a booth not too far away. The brown haired girl served them within minutes. She then took a seat next to Yusuke asking if he liked it. The moment he complemented her she blushed. It was faint of course, yet flared up seconds later. Kurama and Hiei both looked up from their seats defiantly noting that Yusuke's demon energy had indeed gone “haywire”.

“Keiko,” she turned to face the fox when he said her name, “Your father is calling for you.”

“Oh,” she quickly got up and ran into the back, “Coming!”

He rose and sat Yusuke down in his chair when he went to follow. The crimson haired teen looked him in the eye, “Yusuke, listen to me.” He snapped his fingers bringing the former detective out of what seemed to be a trance. Fear replaced the previous look in his eyes, “That was it! That's what I'm trying to tell you about!”

“I know, I know,” he tried to calm his friend; “I promise you you're not going to eat her.”

“But I-”

“No, stop and listen. When ever something like that starts to happen I want you to concentrate on anything but Keiko.” His voice was stern when he commanded this, “It's for both of your sakes, I don't care if you have to ignore her, just do something till that feeling goes away.”

Yusuke nodded as soon as Keiko reemerged from the back, “Kurama I think you're hearing things.”

He put on a fake smile as he sat back down, “I'm sorry, I guess I am.” He sighed catching Hiei's eye, “What's that smirk for?” He asked.

“I'm amused,” the demon scooped up another spoonful of sorbet, “This will be fun to watch.”

Kurama gave him a half glare; maybe it wouldn't be so fun anymore if he were the only thing stopping all hell from breaking loose. Then again, knowing Hiei, he probably wouldn't care. The fox suddenly wished he was Kuwabara- oblivious to the entire situation too busy enjoying his French fries.

Running his fingers through his hair Kurama closed his eyes, the realization of what Yusuke was going through running through his mind once more, he doesn't want to eat Keiko…he wants to mate with her.
