Chapter Two
An insistent knock pounded on the door yet again but Yusuke ignored it. He wasn't in the mood for company and he already knew who it was anyway, there was no mistaking the sound of Kuwabara's rough voice as he tried to get his attention. He had no desire to speak to anyone at the moment, nor had he made any attempt in the past three days. It was selfish of him he knew, especially considering he only had another two days to remain in the Ningenkai before he was banished forever and it was time he should have been spending with his friends and family. At the moment though he just couldn't bring himself to give a damn. His mother was his only remaining family, just as Kuwabara was his only remaining friend. Keiko was out of reach, unable to help him and there was no way he was willing to even speak to Kurama at the moment.
The room fell silent again after several long moments and Yusuke began to relax, believing that Kuwabara had finally taken the hint and left. Solitude was exactly what he wanted at the moment for he wasn't sure how he would react to the presence of others in his current frame of mind. Ever since the day that he had left Hiei standing there in the rain Yusuke had secluded himself away. How had things gone so wrong? Did what they had together mean so little to the apparition? Sure, the smaller demon had made a big deal of just who he belonged to but at the first sign of trouble Hiei had run straight into Kurama's arms. It was a bitter pill to swallow.
Looking around the bedroom, Yusuke's gaze fell on a stack of laundry he had just folded a few minutes ago in an effort to keep his mind occupied. His hand moved to caress the soft black fabric of a cloak left behind and a bitter pain welled up within him. The urge to destroy the garment was strong yet at the same time the Toushin was loath to trash one of the few things he had left of the apparition. With Hiei being gone so frequently there was little there in the way of the hybrid's belongings and what remained wasn't likely to be missed. Not that it mattered, Yusuke doubted that the hiyoukai would return for any of it. Honestly he doubted he would see the apparition again unless it was by chance or the man wanted to flaunt his new relationship with the kitsune.
Unwanted images sprang into his mind of Hiei panting beneath Kurama's body. It was rare that the apparition submitted to anyone and that had suited Yusuke just fine, he'd been perfectly happy with his position in the relationship even when Hiei had hinted for him to take a more dominant role. Perhaps that had been where he had gone wrong, Yusuke had no doubts that the kitsune would be more than happy to fulfill that particular role. Fingers clenched tightly into the soft material as a growl spilled from his lips. No wonder Kurama had been so forward in expressing his interest in the apparition, the kitsune had him right where he wanted him and would fight to keep the apparition. "He's welcome to him." Even as the whispered words passed his lips, Yusuke knew that it wasn't true. Even after everything that had happened he still wanted Hiei but he'd be damned if he'd go begging the apparition to come back to him. Not when his trust had been so horribly shattered.
The phone ringing jolted Yusuke out of his thoughts, causing him to drop the cloak back to the pile. Slowly he made his way towards the phone to glance at the caller id though he had no real intentions of answering it. It was far more likely that he'd unplug the damned thing so he could have some peace and quiet for a while. It was rare that he got a call to begin with but today seemed to be the exception for unwanted interruptions. Thinking it was most likely Kuwabara he reached towards the phone to unplug it but as his eyes lingered on the displayed number Yusuke froze. It was Kurama, the absolute last person in any of the three realms that he wanted to speak to.
A coldness settled over the Toushin as his hand picked up the phone on its own accord. If Kurama was calling him to gloat the kitsune was mistaken in thinking he would tolerate it. Formalities and pleasantries be damned he didn't even bother to say hello when he spoke into the phone, his voice as cold as any wind that could come off of the Koorime island that Hiei came from. "Whatever it is that you called to say, I don't care. You won so don't call me again and so help me, if I see the two of you together flaunting your relationship in front of me not even Koenma will be able to save either of you."
"Yusuke?"
Without waiting to hear what Kurama had to say, Yusuke hung up the phone and then unplugged it when it started ringing once more. No doubt Kurama had taken offense to his statement but it wasn't like he particularly cared at the moment. As he walked back over to the bed and threw himself down upon the mattress he couldn't help but wonder at the confused yet irritated tone in that one spoken word. Was it possible that Kurama had actually thought that after all this he would step aside and continue their friendship like nothing had happened?
"So much for adhering to demon customs." A sigh escaped then, the kitsune had been so determined to shove the possibilities of what Hiei could have done down his throat. Yet that meant nothing when he had moved in on the apparition had it? Did this mean he could go and demand both of their lives for what had occurred? The irony of the situation was astounding to him, yet Yusuke wasn't going to take such drastic measures even if it was his by right.
Still, that didn't mean he was ready to see either of them even if he had to face the fact that Hiei had moved on. It would be in everyone's best interests if he did as well, even if he had no desire for a permanent relationship anymore. There was a good chance that Kurama was now on his way over, not caring for the threat he had just delivered and as much as Yusuke would love to go a couple of rounds with him it would be asking for trouble. With that thought in mind he pulled himself off of the bed and grabbed his house keys.
With no set destination in mind Yusuke made his way outside and allowed his mind to clear. The light breeze that ruffled his shirt did much to relax him and for several long moments he was able to forget about the past week and lose himself in the quiet of the morning. Few people were out despite the way the sun was shining, it promised to be scorching later in the afternoon but the thought didn't bother him. He'd become used to the arid climate back in the Makai, the place he would soon call home once more. Hokeshin would be happy to see him again, of that he was certain. The man positively detested the paperwork that came with overseeing the well being of the city, not that Yusuke blamed him. He couldn't say he enjoyed it either but then that came with the territory he had discovered when he had taken over where Raizen had left off.
Still, the man was adept at handling things and Yusuke had to admit the idea of leaving him in charge of at least the paperwork did sound appealing. Of course Hokeshin was likely to protest such a decision but he'd eventually cave. They all knew how big of a disaster things ended up becoming if the Toushin was left in charge of such things. Yusuke never had been one for dealing with diplomatic bullshit and record keeping. His job was keeping the peace, by force if necessary and it was something he enjoyed doing.
Time passed as he contemplated his return to the Makai. There would be no lack of willing sparring partners, since Enki and his friends had arrived that one day so many years ago a few of them had remained behind, content to stay within the territory. They had been a large part of how he had advanced in his training so quickly and would continue to do so. Perhaps he could even find something more than a sparring partner in one of them, something that would keep his mind off of things here in the Ningenkai.
The idea was tempting, he found both sexes appealing though he hadn't entertained the thought of bedding another since Hiei had expressed an interest. There would be no romantic attachments, no emotions involved. Nothing more than a good hard fuck when the need presented itself. A whisper of youki brushed his senses and Yusuke tensed, immediately recognizing who it was. It wasn't all that surprising to feel Kurama so nearby, nor was he impressed by the agitated state that the Kitsune's ki was in. Apparently he had been right, his threat hadn't gone over all that well with the fox. 'Tough shit, if he's looking for trouble he's found it.'
For now though, Yusuke would wait and see just what Kurama intended to do. There wasn't a hint of Hiei's energy anywhere in the area but that didn't mean much considering how well the apparition could conceal himself. There was every possibility that the hybrid was lurking nearby as well, watching his every move. Were they wanting to see just how devastated he was by Hiei's choice? Yusuke wasn't of a mind to give them what they wanted if that was the case. He wasn't about to break down like some simpering girl who'd been devastated to learn her man was out fucking her best friend.
Whistling to himself the Toushin continued to walk down the street, turning the corner that would lead him downtown. If nothing else, the smells would be an irritation to the demon that he knew was following him. Besides, he had never known Kurama to venture into that part of town. The perfect image he had built up around his life would be tarnished by venturing into some of the areas Yusuke had been known to frequent in his youth. Even if Kurama had seen it all before, he still had an image to maintain. 'This'll be fun.'
Kurama raised a fine eyebrow as he realized just what it was Yusuke was doing. The response he had gotten on the phone had bothered him greatly and if it hadn't been for the erratic way the Toushin's aura was swirling around him he would have already approached the man to find out just what the hell had happened. Instead though he hung back, carefully analyzing every move the dark haired man made. Even as Yusuke's posture screamed arrogance, challenging him to come out there was something else that spoke of defeat and betrayal. Every move the Toushin made was noted for further probing, one way or another he would get to the bottom of this.
The atmosphere around them slowly changed, houses became more sporadic while businesses lined the streets. People milled about as if they had no purpose, easily parting before the man that Kurama was following. It was as if everyone around sensed his dark, dangerous mood and went out of their way to avoid him. Another change in direction had him trailing the man down a dark alleyway though he was careful to remain out of sight. He couldn't be certain if Yusuke knew that he was there or not but he would take no chances, not until he figured out what the Toushin's game was. As they emerged out onto another street Kurama hung back even further, giving Yusuke even more space. There were few reasons that anyone would come to this side of the city. Drugs was one of them, sex was another as was evidenced to the scantily clad men and women who lounged about while waiting for their next customers.
Chocolate eyes roamed over the people they passed as Yusuke continued walking down the sidewalk. He could feel that the Kitsune had moved further back, no doubt surprised at just where he had led them. Of course, Yusuke never had liked being predictable and this was just another instance where he derived satisfaction from being able to shock others. Pausing momentarily, Yusuke couldn't help but gaze at one man standing there as if he hadn't a care in the world. His height was appealing, only a few inches shorter than he was but it was his eyes that had drawn him in. Heavily lidded and seductive, a perfect invitation to come and play. However as he continued to appraise the man before him he shook his head, the resemblance to Hiei was too much. Why allow the ones following him to believe that he was out looking for someone he could pretend was the apparition?
No, that would never do Yusuke knew. Instead he kept walking, wondering why he was even entertaining the thought of picking someone up in the first place. It wasn't as if he were in any desperate need for release. Instead it was something darker that was urging him on, the need to make Hiei realize that he was just as easily replaced even if it was with a professional. The need to prove that at least with him they knew that he wouldn't overstep the bounds and go fucking a friend. If he had wanted to do that he would have turned around and went back to the Reikai to Koenma.
"You seem lost in thought honey, do you need something to take your mind off things?"
The soft voice jerked Yusuke out of his thoughts and he realized that he had stopped without meaning to. Turning to the woman at his left he was about to brush her off when he stopped. While she certainly wasn't runway model material the girl wasn't unattractive either, she had a quiet beauty to her that was rather appealing. Giving her a slow smile he walked up to her and leaned against the wall, his eyes appraising her. "I might, what are you offering?"
Yusuke barely listened as she listed the going rates, he had more than enough to cover any fees should he agree to this. No, his attention was more on the fox and the stationary position he had taken up. No doubt he was watching every move that was made and probably making sure that Hiei had a good view as well. Nodding slightly, Yusuke gave the woman his full attention and his hand went to his wallet to draw out a handful of bills. "Where do we go?"
Taking the bills from him, she took his hand and pulled him down an alley way. It wasn't anything special but then, most of the clients that came down here weren't picky to begin with. As she lead him to a stairwell she took a moment to observe him. He was different than the others, most of the time she was propositioned by aging men with overweight bodies. To see someone so young and in shape was a surprise, most men like that had no trouble finding a girl to satisfy them. Of course, she wasn't about to question him on just why he came here. As they ducked into the shadowed hallway her hands went to his chest, feeling the firm muscles beneath his shirt. "Here's fine, no one will bother us."
It didn't take long for the girl to hit her knees, hands going to his belt. Yusuke knew that she wouldn't want to waste any time, needing to get back on the street to pull in her next customer. Of course, she was going to have to work for her money though. Most men might have come in ready to fuck but then again he wasn't most men. His senses trained onto the kitsune and he realized that once more Kurama had moved. No doubt searching for a better vantage point. While he couldn't see the fox, that didn't mean he wasn't there. As his pants dropped to his ankles and a warm hand enveloped his member, Yusuke closed his eyes and tried to enjoy what she was doing to him.
Kurama stared at the two of them as the prostitute began to work the detective over. Shock was prominent as Yusuke allowed her to touch him intimately, was this what the man had meant by you won? Where the hell was Hiei in all this? The small demon had never returned so he had assumed that the two of them had managed to work things out. But now based on what he was seeing, coupled with the phone call Kurama had the sinking suspicion that something had gone horribly wrong.
A groan echoed up from the stairwell but Kurama could tell it wasn't a sound of pleasure. He was intimately familiar with the sounds Yusuke made, having had the dubious pleasure of being forced to listen to them one weekend when the Detective had needed a place to stay and Hiei had stopped by. No, this was one of frustration and even though he was some distance away he could pick up the reason why. Even though the woman had now taken Yusuke's length into her mouth the man was getting no pleasure from it, his body refusing to respond to the girl's touch. Somehow he doubted that the woman's skilled sucked that badly so there had to be something else holding the man back.
Biting back a growl of frustration, Yusuke fisted his hand in the girl's hair and forced his dick further down her throat hoping that he could use the thrill of dominating someone forcibly to his advantage and become aroused. It worked only slightly but it wasn't enough. this wasn't Hiei. The passion and enthusiasm that the apparition let loose during their sessions together couldn't be matched by this girl. Again his eyes closed, this time trying to imagine it was the hybrid sucking him off but the raw heat and power the man exuded just wasn't there. Irritated he let go of her hair and withdrew from her mouth, earning him a startled look from the girl in question. Ignoring the look he yanked his pants back on and secured them in place. "Sorry, I guess there is just too much on my mind after all."
"I guess, don't expect your money back though." It was rather disappointing to her that this guy couldn't perform. He paid well enough and he was a welcome change from the normal. But still, just because he had issues didn't mean she was handing him back the money. She had to make a living too after all.
Yusuke shrugged his shoulders, he hadn't really expected to get his money back after that. She'd done what she could, it was his fault that he couldn't get his mind off of his former lover. A scowl formed on his face, no doubt the two of them were watching and having a good laugh over this now. His mood darkened considerably as he left the stairwell and made his way back into the daylight. Already the girl was making her way back to her normal spot, her gaze lingering over him as he walked away.
For now Kurama allowed the Toushin to put some distance between them before setting off after him once more. It was obvious the man needed a few minutes to calm down, he wasn't so foolish as to approach Yusuke and take the chance of an all out battle in the middle of the city. Friendship or not he would fight back if necessary and that would invariably cause not only injury to themselves but damage to the city around them which would bring Koenma's wrath down on their heads. After another twenty minutes of tailing the Detective they were out of the more disreputable districts. It was now or never he knew, time to take a chance and see if he could get the answers he sought. Quickly he outdistanced the Detective and took up a position where their paths were sure to cross. Carefully masking his expression, he projected an aura of calm. The last thing he wanted to do was have Yusuke think that he was either challenging him to a fight or mocking him for what had just happened.
Seeing the Kitsune lounging on a building not more than twenty yards away made Yusuke pause. Briefly he debated changing directions but he wasn't a coward and had no intentions of running from a confrontation. Instead he squared his shoulders and continued forward, not bothering to make eye contact with Kurama. It was as if he didn't exist even though the man was painfully aware of his presence. Sticking his hands in his pockets he concentrated on avoiding meeting the foxes eyes. So far he could detect nothing challenging about the red head but that meant little when it came to dealing with the avatar. As he brushed past his team mate, a soft voice reached his ears.
"Can we talk?"
"I said everything I needed to over the phone." Yusuke wasn't about to be put off by the soothing tone in Kurama's voice. The man couldn't be trusted, he'd proven as much when he stole his lover from him. Perhaps later, when the sting of betrayal wasn't so painful he'd be able to face his former friend but not now. Not yet.
Kurama fell silent for a moment as Yusuke paused. The man seemed so determined on this front, trying to look unaffected by everything but to him the pain was evident in the Detective's voice. The phone call had been confusing and challenging. It was what had made him cancel his plans for the day to seek the Toushin out. Taking a chance, he called out a question to the man's retreating back. "Where is Hiei?"
"Is that supposed to be funny fox? If it is I'm not laughing." Turning to face the man behind him, he couldn't help but scowl. What kind of game was Kurama playing? He would know better than anyone where Hiei was at this point in time. After all, Hiei had said that he was going back as soon as they were finished to fuck the man again.
Ignoring the way that Yusuke's aura flared even further, Kurama stared at him levelly. "It was a serious question Yusuke. I haven't seen him since he went to speak with you the other day. I'll admit to being rather curious as to how it worked out, your words on the phone certainly did little to resolve it. So I'll ask again. Where is Hiei?" If the look on Yusuke's face was anything to go by, the man hadn't any idea of where the apparition was.
"Cut the crap Kurama, I know all about the two of you. I couldn't miss the way you covered him in your scent and he damned sure didn't deny it. In fact he admitted it, so stop playing with me. Get to the fucking point and let me go." There was surprise on the Kitsune's face but Yusuke wasn't going to fall for it. Kurama was a cunning one and he'd be a fool to let his guard down. Besides, he knew what he had smelled and Hiei had no reason to lie to him. People stared as they walked by the pair but neither of them paid them any mind, their attention was completely focused on the other.
"Covered him in my scent?" Confusion settled in for a moment as Kurama tried to wrap his mind around the idea that he had scent marked Hiei. A connection snapped into place as he stared at the Toushin whose gaze demanded he try to disprove the accusation. It was obvious the man now thought that he had taken his lover from him and was bitter to the fact. Just what had been said between the two of them that he didn't know about?
Brushing that thought off for a moment Kurama concentrated on solving the first matter at hand. Nothing had happened between the two of them but on the first night that Hiei had stayed over he had ventured outside into the storm. "Yusuke, the only reason Hiei would be covered in my scent is because he borrowed a pair of clothes and a blanket for the night. He was distraught over what had happened between the two of you and went out in the storm, I had a difficult time persuading him to come inside and by then he was soaked through. Nothing has ever happened between us, nor will it. You are the one he wants."
"Bullshit." Yusuke wanted to believe him but he'd heard it straight from Hiei. They'd fucked, there was no point in Kurama lying about it now. "Hiei told me that you were together. Are you saying he lied to me? In fact he said that it was so good he was going back to you once he was finished with me. Are you still going to deny it or are you finally going to admit you stabbed me in the back? You are the last person I would have expected this from Kurama, the very last."
Emerald eyes narrowed dangerously as Kurama contemplated the man in front of him. It wasn't like Hiei to say such a thing but given enough provocation and hurt the hybrid would lash out in the most painful way he could. Anger filled him then, at both Yusuke and the missing apparition. They were both being so unreasonable he was tempted to take them both in hand and beat them bloody. "Think very carefully on this Yusuke because yes, Hiei did lie. Before this supposed confession of infidelity, did you accuse him of doing just that?"
Silence fell between them as Yusuke stared at Kurama. The kitsune seemed to be deadly serious about this and for several long moments he began to doubt Hiei's words. As he recalled the words that they had spoken he remembered vividly the way Hiei had begun to relax in his arms, his relief evident that everything was over. It was only afterwards that he had smelled the fox and blown up. He'd accused the apparition of doing the unthinkable and didn't give him the opportunity to explain himself. Only after many harsh words had the hybrid finally blown up, snarling an admission. Had he driven Hiei to lying? Even if his lover had denied it would he have believed him? Sadly, Yusuke knew the answer to this question already. He wouldn't have because he was too hurt by the possibility he had lost Hiei to Kurama, especially considering the words that had just come from the avatar's own lips. "I did. Fuck.. I did.."
"Then that would explain why he went along with it. Are you even capable of thinking when it comes to something other than a physical fight Yusuke? This has to be the stupidest thing I have ever seen you do." Not caring what sort of reaction he would be met with, Kurama grabbed the man's jacket and began hauling him back towards his house. Hiei had been trusting of very few in his long life, to find that Yusuke believed him capable of infidelity would be a crushing blow to the apparition. It would explain why no one knew where he had disappeared to, it was likely that Hiei had no desire to be found. When Yusuke opened his mouth to protest the harsh treatment, Kurama leveled a glare at him that spoke volumes. "Spare me the dramatics of having to knock you out and drag you back forcibly. Whether you like it or not, you are at fault for this entire situation. From start to finish, if it hadn't been for you and Koenma this never would have happened. It's up to you to fix it, assuming you even can."
Guilt filled him at hearing Kurama's words, knowing that they were true. Yes, Hiei had made mistakes but he'd been the one to drive the apparition into making them. "I never meant for this to happen Kurama." Pulling away from the kitsune sharply, Yusuke straightened his jacket and fell in step beside the man. "I fucked up and I know it but I doubt Hiei will be willing to listen to me if I could even find him." The smaller demon could be anywhere by now. Still in the ningenkai perhaps, deep within the forests where no one would bother him or in the Makai where he could spill as much blood as he needed to before he managed to forget what they had between them.
"It remains to be seen whether or not the two of you can reconcile your differences but as to the question of where he is, I would say the Makai. There is nothing more holding him here besides Yukina and he would not burden her so." Knowing the apparition he'd intended to cut all ties with the Ningenkai when the relationship fell through. If Yusuke wanted to fight for the apparition he would have to venture into demon world and take his chances there. Kurama knew that he could be of no further help in this, his mere presence had developed a rift between the three of them that he had never believed was possible to attain.
Somehow Yusuke had known that was going to be the answer so it wasn't a large shock when it came. He still had a few days that he could remain in the Ningenkai but if he stayed it would only worsen his chances of getting the apparition back. He'd be harder than hell to convince anyway and the passage of time would just cement the idea in the hybrid's head that this was for the best. "I guess this'll be goodbye then. I never got a chance to tell Hiei but I didn't sign the papers. Koenma explained to me exactly what pledging allegiance to the Reikai meant before I got the chance. I couldn't do it so... I'm being exiled back to the Makai."
Kurama stopped to peer at the man beside him. He'd been curious as to what the Reikai would ask for in order for Yusuke to stay since in most instances demons were not allowed to remain in the Ningenkai. As it were, he was only exempt because technically his body was still human even if his soul was not. His life fell in a grey area and after much debate he was allowed to forgo the red tape. Yusuke on the other hand was a special case, since when he died the second time the structure of his dna had changed. He wasn't quite demon, nor quite human and as such he fell into the grey area as well. The main difference was their power levels and Enma's dislike for the Toushin to begin with. "What exactly did they ask for?"
Sighing heavily, Yusuke stared at the man in front of him. More than once he had to wonder just why he caught all the shit, no matter how much good he had done for the world. "Well, put simply Koenma said if the Reikai went to war I'd be forced to side with them no matter who it was against or if I agreed with them." There was no need to point out just what that meant, Kurama would easily be able to see why he had to turn the agreement down. Slowly Yusuke started walking once more, if he were to leave for demon world soon he had a few things that he needed to do.
Moving beside him Kurama remained silent for a while. The knowledge he had just gained strengthened his belief on just how much Yusuke had to care for Hiei. All the ties in the Makai that the Detective held did not compare to his life in the Ningenkai with one exception. For the Toushin to give all that up spoke volumes about the bond that the two of them held. Would it be enough to overcome the pain that Hiei had experienced at Yusuke's hands? For once Kurama wasn't sure, he could only hope that Yusuke succeeded on his quest. "Go to him Yusuke. If he means that much to you, find him and make him see reason."
A look of determination passed over his face as Yusuke nodded firmly. One way or another he'd get the apparition to listen to him, he wasn't going to let their relationship end this way. He'd been a fool, refusing to believe that Hiei would never go back on a promise. He'd allowed his jealousy to cloud his judgment but as Yusuke turned towards his home all uncertainty vanished. "I'll leave tonight. If you could, take care of my place and all. I don't have time to deal with it myself, not if I'm to find Hiei anytime soon. And, say goodbye to Kuwabara and Keiko for me. Maybe they can come visit sometime, I'm sure Hiei wouldn't mind escorting either of them into the Makai."
"I'll do what I can. If Hiei isn't willing then I will bring them on my next trip to demon world. You have my word." As pissed off as the two human's would be at Yusuke's abrupt departure Kurama knew that the Toushin had a point. Every moments delay would cost precious time. The only person he couldn't say goodbye to for the man was Atsuko.
"Thanks man, I'll see you later. And for what it's worth, I'm sorry." Yusuke didn't wait for a reply as he turned and sprinted towards home. Scenery flew by at a blinding speed as he pushed himself even faster. Few would be able to see him at the rate of speed he traveled at so he wasn't concerned with appearances. As he reached the front door he pulled his keys out of his back pocket and unlocked the door. Not bothering to remove them he strode to the bedroom and grabbed his knapsack, all he would need would be a few changes of clothes. Anything else he could get later once he crossed the border. At the last minute he grabbed the cloak he'd folded earlier and placed in the bag, Taking one last look around the room he decided that there was nothing else that he needed to take with him.
It was strange how he had gained so many personal things but as he stood ready to say goodbye to this life for good none of them meant anything. Sure, it was likely he would see some of it again since Kurama was likely to bring part of it. But it was all stuff he could live without. Pulling the pack over his shoulder he walked out the front door again and shut it behind him, pocketing the keys. Luckily his mother's apartment wasn't that far away, he'd purposefully made sure of that so he could continue to keep an eye on her.
The sun beat down on his shoulders as he approached her front door and knocked slightly, waiting to see if she was even sober. Hearing no answer he pushed the door open and made his way inside. As expected the apartment was trashed, more than once he'd commented that if she couldn't keep the house clean to hire a maid. Unfortunately all the money she had that could go towards such an expense went to her liquor habit. It was one thing among many that he'd never been able to break her of. Sounds of soft snoring came from the couch and he knew that she'd likely had a long night. She probably wouldn't forgive him for waking her up just to tell her that he was leaving again but he couldn't walk away without saying goodbye.
Shaking her shoulder lightly, Yusuke hoped that she'd wake up easily. At least enough for him to say what he needed to and be gone. He didn't need any long tear filled goodbyes, perhaps in this instance it was best that she'd been drinking. If not his mother would probably panic and he'd be spending the next four hours or more just trying to pry her arms off of him. "Come on mom, wake up. We need to talk."
"Yusuke?" Astuko opened her eyes and blinked up at him wearily. It was rare that her son came to visit, mainly because he didn't approve of her lifestyle but she couldn't say the feeling wasn't mutual. She hadn't necessarily agreed with his when he announced to her that he was bi-sexual. Of course she'd accepted it in the end, it was just something that was better not talked about. "What are you doing here?"
"Saying goodbye. I got a new job mom and I have to move out of the country." At the moment Yusuke was praying to every god that he knew of that she would believe his lie. She didn't know of demons or the other two realms. She didn't know that her son was in danger on a near daily basis or that his lover was one of the most powerful beings to walk the Earth currently. None of this she needed to know, it was his burden to bear. All she needed to be aware of was that he hadn't died when he disappeared once more.
"Ahhh congr... congratel... ahhh the hell wit' it. M' happy for you. Let's celebrate!" Sitting up slightly Atsuko wrapped her arms around the man in front of her and sighed. Finally something in their lives was going right, she'd despaired of the boy ever amounting to anything worthwhile. As she laid there in his arms her eyes closed and she drifted back off into sleep, thinking of just how to party with Yusuke once she woke up. After all, he couldn't be leaving right away. Could he?
Yusuke gently laid her back down on the couch and shook his head. It would figure that she'd be too drunk to even realize what was going on. She might hate him for this later but at least he'd done what he came to do. Running his fingers through her hair he took one last look at her and memorized it. This was more than likely the last time he would ever see her again. Kneeling down he kissed her cheek before whispering in her ear. "Goodbye mom."
Standing abruptly, Yusuke walked out of the apartment and closed the door softly behind him. Thunder rumbled overhead, all traces of the sun slowly giving way to the encroaching storm clouds. Was it raining in the Makai? It was entirely possible he knew, the weather patterns did tend to run the same with exception of the extreme locations. Even with the possibility of impending rain he couldn't wait to see the magenta sky looming overhead. It would mean he was just that much closer to finding Hiei again and making him understand that he regretted the harsh words spoken between them.
As he set off for a known portal that would take him back to demon world Yusuke never bothered looking back. There was no time for regrets on what he was leaving behind, only hopes for what the future held for them. When the familiar energy rip appeared before him, the toushin picked up speed and raced for the gateway that would take him home. Violent energy wrapped around him as he passed through the portal and landed lightly on the other side. Casting a quick glance to the skies the Toushin found his prediction was right. Lightning arced through the clouds, signaling the impending storms. All hell was about to break loose and there was absolutely no where close Yusuke could go for shelter. "Oh well, a little rain won't kill me."
As if mocking the Toushin's words, the heavens opened up and allowed the torrent to be set free. Stinging drops of rain pelted the dark haired man, quickly plastering his clothing to his skin. Shrugging the pack back over his shoulder Yusuke set off at a run, hoping to find shelter soon. Or course, first he would have to deal with the border patrol that he was certain knew of his appearance. Little slipped by them and the likelihood that they would allow him to pass unchallenged was slim. At least until they realized who he was anyway. Truthfully Yusuke looked forward to their arrival, they would probably be the best source of information about Hiei's whereabouts. If that didn't pan out his next plan of attack was going to speak to Mukuro.
The wind howled around him, chilling him to the bone but Yusuke paid it no mind. All of his attention was focused on achieving his goal which made it easy to shut out minor discomforts such as the way his shoes became waterlogged with each passing step. Visibility as reduced to a minimum making it necessary to rely on his other senses. However once he opened up to them Yusuke nearly came to a halt at the staggering power that washed over him. The surprise was quickly replaced by a slow smile, it would seem that this might be easier than he first expected. Altering his course slightly, the Toushin took off towards the energy source he knew so well. It wasn't Hiei, but it was the next best thing.
Within minutes the large transporter ground to a stop before him and the door slid open, a single guard stepping out from the confines. "Lord Mukuro has requested your presence Lord Yusuke." Hostile eyes stared at the Detective. Ever since the fire apparition had come and gone their liege had been most displeased. No one could say what exactly had caused the shift in her mood but the anguished aura that Hiei had carried as he had left was telling enough. Something had destabilized him and as such it brought out every protective instinct that Mukuro had. If Yusuke did not give the right answers to this interrogation, he would die.
"Alright, I need to talk to her anyway." It had been difficult not to notice the undercurrent of tension that the man held but Yusuke was not overly concerned. One lone guard couldn't harm him. Most likely it would be difficult for Mukuro's entire rank of demons to overpower him if it came down to it. No, the only one the Toushin had to worry about in the fortress was Mukuro herself. Yusuke wasn't sure what his reception would be exactly, they'd been on amiable terms before but then that was before Hiei had vanished. How much did the woman know? How hard would it be to convince her to help him?
All those questions would soon be answered he knew as they stopped in front of a large door and the guard knocked twice before pushing it open. Yusuke followed the man through, not bothering to look at the surrounding area. Instead his attention focused on the woman who turned to regard him coldly. One strike against him already, Yusuke knew that he would have to tread carefully from here on out. While he was strong, Mukuro had far more experience than he could lay claim to. "It's been a long time."
"Indeed, although in this instance I would almost say it hasn't been long enough Yusuke." Now that she had the former spirit detective in her office she could get to the bottom of just what had happened to Hiei. He'd told her little before leaving, only that he needed some time off to clear his head and that he would return in a month's time. Needless to say that hadn't been a sufficient answer and to that end she'd attempted to probe his mind. What little she was able to glean were a few fleeting images, ones that disturbed her greatly if she were to have believed in just how strong of a bond they were reported to have. Seeing Yusuke panting beneath that pacifier sucking overlord would be enough to drive Hiei over the edge. Yet she wasn't entirely certain that she should believe that vision, especially considering Yusuke was standing before her now alive and well.
"So you've spoken to Hiei then?" At her slight nod Yusuke's eyes showed a flash of relief before hardening with determination once more. Now that it had been established that he had indeed returned to the Makai it would be easier to find him. He wouldn't allow anyone to stand in his way of reclaiming his lover. "Where is he, I need to speak with him." Of course, he knew it wasn't likely she was just going to hand over such information just because he asked. It was a starting point though.
A cold smile spread across Mukuro's face as she regarded the man before her. Even now he didn't realize that she was probing his mind to find out exactly what was happening. An image came to her then that made her pause. Yusuke standing before the apparition, a look of scorn on his face and his hands clenched in rage. As his lips moved she could read the words and feel the loathing that came with them. An accusation of infidelity, and unwillingness to believe an explanations. The parting words of a lover scorned, meant to cause as much pain as possible before abandoning him in the storm. Anger surged through her as she stared the man down, did he not realize what he had done? "How dare you."
Yusuke didn't bother to move as she advanced towards him, knowing that she had every right to be pissed off at him. They'd had a talk at the beginning of this relationship and she'd been very clear in just how displeased she would be if he wasn't serious about this relationship with Hiei. "Look, I know I fucked up. I've gone over every single mistake I've made numerous times and kicked my own ass for it. Say what you want to me, I'm not about to stop you. Just help me find him, I have to make things right."
"So, you attempt to cheat on him. You accuse him of doing something you very nearly did yourself and you expect that an apology will make things right again?" Disbelief was hard on the heels of that anger, truly men were incredibly stupid in instances like this. With Hiei's life being what it was it would be difficult if not impossible to overcome the damage that had just been done. It was hard enough for him to trust to begin with and Yusuke had done the unthinkable. Granted, it wasn't likely that Hiei was entirely blameless in all this knowing the apparition as well as she did. But still, the man standing before her should have had more sense. "Tell me why I should bother to help you."
Taking a deep breath Yusuke steeled himself for the fight he knew was coming. Before he could get anywhere with Hiei he had to convince the woman challenging him first. Hiei held Mukuro's opinion in high regard, if she told the apparition that his apology was insincere there was no doubts that he'd side with her and all his words would fall on deaf ears. "I love him. Isn't that enough?"
"Fool, if you loved him so much you would have never accused him of such a thing to begin with. Perhaps you were looking for some flaw in him which you knew you carried. You were willing to give yourself to Prince Koenma, perhaps you were seeking justification in doing so by believing that Hiei would betray you in such a fashion." Just the fact that Yusuke was still among the living spoke of the devotion the apparition held for the idiot before her. Had she been in Hiei's position the Detective would have been gutted where he stood and his body put on display for the realm to see. The head of his lover would have become the centerpiece of the main hall, prince or no prince.
Crossing his arms, Yusuke stared down at the floor. He knew that she had a point, how many nights had he laid awake before they had come together? Images of Hiei touching Kurama had plagued him constantly and had begun to consume him. Even after the apparition confronted him on his feelings it had been a hidden fear of his, perhaps that was why he had latched so viciously onto Kurama's threat to take the hybrid from him. Smelling the kitsune on his lover had just added fuel to the fire and gave him a reason to lash out. "You're wrong, I love him too much. Kurama challenged my claim on him and it was too much, too fast. Smelling Kurama all over him just made it all that much more real. I thought I'd lost him and then when Hiei admitted it I couldn't take it anymore."
"And say you go out to find him and somehow manage to convince him. What then? At the first sign on trouble will you do this again? You are so insecure when it comes to his feelings I have to wonder if this relationship is more destructive than it is good." Even thought Mukuro knew the feelings ran deep on both of their parts, she refused to stand by and watch the Toushin destroy Hiei little by little. If the man wanted to resume the relationship then he would have to prove himself before she gave him any aid in finding the hybrid.
Yusuke relaxed slightly, knowing that so far he'd managed to say the right things. If he had answered wrongly it was entirely possible that Mukuro would be dropping his severed head to the floor at this very instant. "It won't, I know better know. He said what he did because I never gave him a chance to defend himself. I have no interest in any other and I know he feels the same way now. I've given up everything in the Ningenkai to be with him. My friends, family... everything. I just need to find him, I need to make him understand."
"Interesting." The silence stretched out between them for several long moments as she considered his words. Mukuro could sense no deceit in him which would indicate he was just telling her what she wanted to hear. However it was difficult to believe that he would abandon the Ningenkai just to be with Hiei. Even now the rumors still continued about just how attached he was to the Yukimura girl and the lengths he went to in order to keep her safe. "Tell me why you would give up everything to come here. The pull of the Ningenkai was too strong for you to remain and you returned before your three years of training was completed. What has changed?"
"If that's what I have to sacrifice to stay with Hiei it's worth it. That's all I can say. All of it means nothing if I have to give him up and I'm not willing to lose him. Not to the Ningenkai, not to Kurama, not to you. One way or another I'll win him back." No longer caring if she approved of their relationship or not, Yusuke turned from the woman and began to leave the room. If she wouldn't help him there was nothing he could do about it but that didn't mean he had the time to waste by standing there arguing.
"Go to the North, he left here almost immediately when he returned from the Ningenkai. I imagine he's a good distance away by now but you should be able to find him. I'm not going to wish you luck because personally I think Hiei should feed you to the Makai flames for what you have done but it is not my choice. I'll only say this, cross him again and not even his feelings will spare you. If he does not kill you, I will." Mukuro allowed her aura to spike slightly backing up the threat of her words. No matter how powerful the Toushin believed himself to be, it still wouldn't be much of an exercise of her abilities to eliminate him.
Yusuke turned to look over his shoulder, nodding once. They understood each other perfectly well in this instance and he wasn't about to give her a chance to try and carry out her threat. "Thanks for the tip." Without saying goodbye he walked out the door and followed the guard down the path that would lead him to the exit. Now that he had a direction all he had to do was figure out just how far the apparition had traveled. One thing was obvious though, he was going to need help if he had any hopes of catching up to him. Closing his eyes he reached out to Puu who would come quickly. The phoenix resided at Genkai's most of the time since explaining him would be too difficult. It would only take a matter of minutes for him to arrive, even with the storm raging outside.
The door Yusuke had originally passed through opened and a gust of wind carried the stinging rain inside. It was tempting to just wait inside until Puu arrived but the hostile look he was receiving told him just how unwelcome that idea would be. It didn't come as a surprise to him anyway, he'd felt the guard waiting outside the doorway and most likely he had heard every word of the conversation. "Thanks man." Certain that the sarcasm was heard, Yusuke stepped out into the frigid rain and ignored the door shutting firmly behind him. Any attempts to see through the downpour were in vain but he knew that Puu was on his way. It was only a matter of time before the phoenix arrived and then the search would commence once more.
Finding the apparition wasn't likely to be easy, most likely Hiei was holed up somewhere warm and dry while he continued to get soaked. Swiping the wet hair away from his eyes Yusuke shifted his weight impatiently from one foot to the other. "Come on Puu, where the hell are you?" As rain dripped down the back of his neck and into his shirt Yusuke shivered and tried to press against the dubious shelter that the fortress provided. A particularly strong gust of wind signaled the spirit beast's arrival and surprisingly enough he looked fairly dry. "Now how in the hell did you manage that?"
Of course no answer was forthcoming, not that Yusuke truly expected one. He could feel Puu's displeasure about being out in the storm and his impatience to get going. "Alright, give me a minute dammit!" Gripping the damp feathers the Toushin hauled himself up onto the broad back and was then forced to hang on for dear life as Puu rocketed skyward. Instead of flying at the normal altitude that was common for the phoenix, Puu continued to fly higher into the ominous clouds and eventually beyond them. "Well this is handy but how are we going to see Hiei from way up here?" Even now as Yusuke tried to peer beneath the cloud cover his vision was completely obscured making it impossible to search for the apparition.
"Puu!"
The phoenixes irritation was plain for Yusuke to feel but there was no persuading the bird to take them further down again. One would think that the beast was actually a cat with the way he was acting at the moment. As connected as the two of them were they had the definite tendency of believing that there were better ways to accomplish the same goal. "Fine you stupid bird but if we don't find him because of this I'm blaming you." Yusuke knew he was probably being irrational at the moment but it did little to sooth his irritation. Hiei was probably long gone by now and heading back down into that mess of a storm wasn't likely to render any results except for the possibility of catching a cold.

Flames erupted through the forest as Hiei moved through the carnage. Bloodied bodies lay strewn about on the charred ground but he ignored them in favor of his opponents which were still living. Rumors had built slowly over time about a clan of powerful demons who had staked out a piece of Mukuro's old territory and claimed it as their own. It had been of little interest at the time since the former Makai lord no longer claimed the land as hers but Hiei had taken it upon himself to check the situation out and decide whether or not it was worthy of attention. Unfortunately for the apparition these demons were well aware of just who he was and had taken his appearance as an act of aggression on Mukuro's part. "Shit!"
Hiei dodged at the last moment, barely avoiding injury as the blast sailed off into the distance. The sounds of trees splintering reached his ears and he knew that had the energy hit him his life would have ended quickly. As the saying went, curiosity killed the cat but he'd never expected it to be capable of killing the Forbidden Child as well. He was quickly running out of options in this battle and sooner or later Hiei knew that he would be forced to use the dragon. Could he survive if he was to use his strongest attack? It was doubtful he decided, against another S class demon he stood a decent chance but not against two. Exhaustion would quickly overtake him and then he would be helpless in the face of their retaliation.
At the moment his best option was to flee and alert Mukuro to the disposition of the encroaching demons. Together they would be more than enough to handle these fools, he just had to survive long enough to warn her. An attack came from the left, forcing Hiei to draw his sword and counter the blow. The sounds of steel meeting steel filled the air as the apparition fought viciously for his life. It was difficult keeping track of the other demon though with how quickly his opponent moved. As he was driven deeper and deeper into the woods the hybrid sensed the rapid approach of another powerful demon but he couldn't lock in on it's location or if it was someone he knew. There was every possibility that Mukuro herself had noticed the disturbance and was coming to investigate. Regardless, he was out of time and options as the second demon leveled a blast that struck him in the side and sent him hurtling into a tree.
Not being given a chance to recover, another bolt of energy was directed towards him. Fighting for his very existence, Hiei pushed himself away from the tree and ignored the throbbing in his head where it had struck the rough bark. Quickly he focused the power of the Jagan in an effort to overpower the demon using the energy attacks long enough to avoid being struck yet again but it was of no use. As soon as the apparition had the first one subdued the second phased into view and struck him with a blast of pure power, breaking the hold of the Jagan and sending Hiei to his knees where he clutched his head in agony.
Unsure of just what attack had been used, Hiei did his best to avoid any further attacks but he knew that he was in trouble. His eyes watered profusely as he tried to blink away the blinding spots that swam before his eyes. With his vision now rendered useless he knew that it was over, the best he could hope for was to release the dragon and pray that it managed to take at least one of his opponents out. Numb fingers tugged at the warding even as he heard the approaching footsteps of his would be killers. Hoarse words passed his lips as he called forth the dragon and then the beautifully terrifying sounds of another screaming made him smile cruelly. If he were to die then he'd be sure to take as many with him as he could.
As the beast devoured the first of its prey, Hiei staggered back against the tree once more and tried to ignore the blood that dripped from his many wounds. None of which were life threatening, merely troublesome. The loss of his vision however was devastating and as the apparition stood there waiting for the killing blow to come he allowed his unseeing eyes to close. It was nearly done, he could feel the exhaustion overtaking him and as soon as he lost consciousness the dragon would lose its hold on the mortal realm. Feeling the beast weakening, Hiei could only take comfort in that one of them had perished before his energy had given out. As his consciousness left him, he dimly heard Yusuke's voice coming from across a great distance, calling out his most powerful attack.
There was no mistaking the feel of the dragon of darkness flame and knowing that Hiei had encountered enough trouble to use that attack, Yusuke had urged Puu on to even greater speeds. A few minutes more and he knew that he would have been too late to save the apparition. No mercy would be given to the fool who had dared to attack the hybrid, of this the Toushin would make sure. As the shot gun blast tore through the aggressor's shoulder, Yusuke leapt off of Puu's broad back, changing into his majin form as he did so. Yusuke noted with approval how recognition flitted through this man's eyes and the fear that quickly followed. The dragon had done a number on the man standing before the Toushin, now it was up to him to finish the bastard off.
They moved quickly, knowing that this was a fight to the death. Yusuke was careful to herd the man away from his fallen lover, not wanting to give this demon the opportunity to use Hiei as an unfair advantage. Even so, just to be certain that didn't happen Puu had stationed himself in between Hiei and the two demon's fighting. Yusuke's feelings were his own and he would ensure that nothing happened to the apparition. Whenever the strange demon came too close for comfort, a razor sharp beak would strike out and warn him away.
"Now now, no need to go picking on someone who can't defend themselves. Pay attention to me instead!" Anger laced Yusuke's voice as his fist flew towards the demon's face, spirit energy powering the punch. Bones cracked under the impact and blood ran freely down the man's face. The Toushin readied another strike but paused as he felt the power around the strange demon grow and realized just what he had planned. A final assault, meaning to take the both of them out at once. As the demon lunged towards in, fully intent on carrying through with the attack Yusuke sidestepped and delivered a kick to the demon's lower back. As the man sprawled out on the ground the Toushin took advantage of his fallen position and leapt upon his back. Calloused hands gripped the man's face securely and violently jerked it to the side, snapping his neck instantly. Dropping his prey, Yusuke stood quickly and made his way over to Hiei's limp form.
Gently he turned the apparition over to get a good look at his injuries even as Puu stretched his wing over the both of them and shielded them from the bitter rain. Blood dripped slowly from numerous cuts but Yusuke couldn't see any major damage. It simply looked as if it were exhaustion from using the dragon, something that Hiei would recover easily enough from with a few hours sleep. Had things looked any more serious they would be heading back to Mukuro's for treatment but for now it was unnecessary Carefully he picked the hybrid up and waited for Puu to lay down so they could mount. Once they were settled the phoenix took to the skies once more, this time in search of someplace they could bed down and wait out the storm.
Thankfully they were in an area of the Makai that he knew quite well, having spent a good deal of time there in training. A cave was not to far off, one that would be large enough for not only the two of them but Puu as well. The phoenix picked up on his intentions immediately and adjusted their course while moving out of the weather once more. As they traveled Yusuke couldn't help but stare down into Hiei's sleeping face. The man looked like hell, dark circles having formed underneath his eyes and the Toushin couldn't help but wonder if Hiei had even attempted to sleep since their argument. Guilt filled him once more, knowing that this had been his fault and now he'd nearly gotten Hiei killed. The apparition should have still been within the Ningenkai with him, not out here facing off with two S class demons alone in an effort to run from the pain that had been inflicted upon him. "I'm so sorry."
Now all Yusuke could do was watch over him until he recovered and hope that the apparition would forgive him. Truthfully he doubted it was even possible, so many hurtful words had been said in such a short amount of time. Yet there was hope, even as he continued to hold onto the smaller demon there was no mistaking the fact that Hiei had relaxed even further into his embrace. It was as if the apparition knew that he was safe now that Yusuke was once more by his side. Once he awoke it might be another story, the familiar anger returning but for now Yusuke would take what he could get. A sharp descent was Yusuke's only warning that they had arrived as Puu took them closer to the cave. The landing was anything but gentle yet the Toushin wasn't going to complain. Instead he slid off of the spirit beast's back and carried Hiei inside knowing Puu would follow closely behind him.
It seemed as if everything had remained as Yusuke had left it, even if things were a bit dust covered from lack of use. Somewhat surprised that no one had made use of the cave in his absence, Yusuke made his way over to the makeshift bed and pulled the top most blanket off. Dust filled the air for a moment before settling once more but at least now Hiei would be comfortable as he rested. Laying the apparition down gently, Yusuke set about removing his wet clothing knowing that the last thing they needed was Hiei to have survived the demon attack only to succumb to some easily prevented illness.
Yusuke couldn't help but linger over the apparition's nude form, his eyes taking in every detail including the way Hiei's appearance had somehow become more fragile looking. He wasn't quite able to determine exactly what it was that had changed, all the Toushin was certain of was that something was different. Allowing the thought to disappear for the moment, Yusuke picked up the discarded blanket and shook it out before laying it gently over his lover. If nothing else this would keep him warm for the moment while he set up the fire. Only afterwards could he consider his own needs and see to tending them.
A soft trill caught his attention and he looked over to Puu who continued to gaze at Hiei's limp form in concern. Shaking his head slightly Yusuke began clearing out the fire pit and rearranging the stones that had scattered. Once he was certain that the fire would be well secured Yusuke piled wood in the center before lining it with kindling. The fire starting supplies were right where he had left them and it wasn't long before the fire was burning brightly, filling the cave with a warm glow. Standing quietly the toushin began stripping off his own soaked clothing and hanging them up to dry before grabbing an extra couple of blankets and carrying them over to the bed. Sliding up next to the apparition, Yusuke wrapped his arm around the smaller demon and pulled the blankets up over the two of them. As Hiei's cold skin came in contact with his own Yusuke couldn't suppress the shiver that wracked his body even though he pulled the hybrid closer in an effort to warm him. Slowly he allowed his own eyes to close, knowing that if danger were to threaten Puu would alert him immediately.

Consciousness came to Hiei slowly and for several long moments he tried to force himself back into the sleepless oblivion that he came from. However he stilled as awareness washed over him and the apparition opened his eyes. The first thing he noticed was that aside from some vague shadows he couldn't make out anything of his surroundings, the second was that he was entirely too warm with the body that was pressed up against him so firmly. Ever so slowly he tried to move away from the person next to him, unsure of what to make of the situation he had found himself in. Slowly he opened the Jagan and allowed the familiar energy to wash over him before muffling a curse. What the hell was Yusuke doing here?
The former Detective had been awake for some time now, night having long since fallen and had been aware of the very moment in which Hiei had regained consciousness. Uncertainty gripped him as he watched the apparition look around warily, yet seeming not to notice him right away. Frowning slightly, Yusuke made a move to ask him if he was alright when he heard the smaller demon curse. As the hybrid began to move away from him, Yusuke knew that he was about to lose his chance to apologize. Reaching out his arms encircled the apparition once more, holding him in place. "Don't leave, we've got a lot to talk about. Please don't go."
"We have nothing to talk about." Briefly Hiei sought to remove the arms from around his waist. They'd said everything they needed to the last time they had spoken. What more could the man possibly want? To twist the knife in his heart further? Had that been why he'd brought him here? If so he wasn't about to lay there and take it. Blind or not he'd find his way back to the fortress and Yusuke could get on with his life. That's what the man had wanted in the first place wasn't it?
Yusuke had the advantage this time and he knew it when Hiei tried once more to shove him away. A brief struggle ensued before the apparition was firmly pinned beneath him and panting. Yusuke stared down into the hybrid's wide eyes and frowned for a moment. It was as if the man couldn't even see him. "Are you okay Hiei? Seriously, you seem... off." As the demon beneath him stilled Yusuke positioned himself more firmly atop the demon taking care not to crush him with his greater weight.
"What do you care? You told me I could rot in hell remember?" All the concern in the Detective's voice had to be nothing more than an act. Surely the man couldn't be there out of genuine concern. He'd made his feelings quite clear before, nothing had changed. Once he had said what he needed to the man would be gone once more and he would be left to carry on with what remained of his shattered emotions but he'd be damned if he allowed Yusuke to see just how much he'd already hurt him.
Ignoring the question for a moment Yusuke took a deep breath and buried his face against the apparition's neck. As much as Hiei tried to hide what he was feeling, they'd known each other for far too long. He'd seen through the masks one to many times and feeling the emotions that lay so close to the surface now came as second nature. His breath ghosted along Hiei's warm skin as he considered his words carefully. "I.. I didn't mean it Hiei. Look, I know the truth now and I'll admit, at the time I was blind to it. The thought that you'd go with Kurama has always been one of my fears, you know that. I mean after all, he could have anyone he wanted. Why the hell would someone choose me over him?"
Hiei remained silent, leaving the question unanswered. These were well established fears that he knew the Toushin had, yet nothing he'd ever said had been able to lay them to rest and he wasn't about to start now. If he was correct in his assumptions, the man had spoken to Kurama and learned the truth but it changed nothing. Assuming he could find it in himself to forgive the man once they returned to the Ningenkai the same problems would remain.
"It was stupid of me to jump to the wrong conclusions, I was still pissed off over what happened and thinking that you were gone for good. Then with what Kurama said it all just hit me at once and I overreacted. I don't know if you'll forgive me but I have to try. I don't want to lose you." Yusuke shut his eyes as he finished speaking, waiting to hear the words of condemnation. Hiei had never been a very forgiving person and he'd have every right to tell him to go to hell.
It had been the straw that had broken the camel's back so to speak when Kurama had threatened Yusuke's claim over him Hiei knew. But that still didn't excuse the accusation that the Detective had thrown in his face, nor had the initial question ever been answered though he had a good idea. If the Toushin was coming to him now, even after all this that had to mean he was willing to leave Koenma behind. Even so, he wasn't about to capitulate and hand Yusuke the forgiveness he desired. "And what would happen if we returned to the Ningenkai? If you cannot refrain from jumping at shadows every time something happens that is not to your liking then it's not worth it to me. You know the depths of my feelings, that should have sufficed yet still you mistrusted me. Tell me why I should allow this relationship to continue?"
"I know better now." Yusuke levered himself up to look at his lover, still concerned with the lack of recognition in those crimson eyes. Gently he touched the apparition's cheek, frowning when Hiei started slightly. "In answer to your first question, we won't be returning to the Ningenkai. In order to remain there the papers I would have signed would have demanded that I turn against you should a war between the two realms ever occur. I refused to do it, staying in the human world isn't worth it to me. I've given up everything Hiei. My home, my family and my friends. All of it for you. What more can I give to convince you that I can't let you go?"
"But Koenma didn't know that we were together. What exactly did he ask for?" Disbelief caused him to question Yusuke's statement, it was hard for Hiei to accept the idea that the Detective would leave everything behind just for him. Hadn't that been why he'd agreed to a long distance relationship in the first place? The Toushin couldn't leave his mother and Keiko behind. It had been the topic of many conversations after all.
"Koenma didn't know about you. they wanted my oath to stand with the Reikai. I was to become a weapon that they could use at their whim and while Koenma wouldn't require it, you know that his father would. He's wanted domination over the Makai for centuries, I refused to give into the demands that would be required to remain. When we walked out of there I knew what I was giving up but it was worth it. You were worth it. Kurama's taking care of my place and I've already said my goodbyes to my mother. I'm here for good, the question is do you still want me around?" As Yusuke watched the apparition he could see that Hiei was having a hard time accepting what he had done but it wasn't surprising. The apparition had wanted him to return to the demon world from the beginning and he'd always refused.
Even so, Hiei could hear the pain in the Detective's voice that threatened to break loose. It was the closest he'd ever seen Yusuke come to breaking down since Genkai's death but at the same time there was no tone of regret either. Obviously if the decision had been offered to him once more the answer would have still been the same. Hiei wished that he could see at the moment and witness the truth in the Detective's eyes that would reassure him. Now all he had to go on was his instincts which were telling him that if he wanted things could be made right once more. "It figures the fool would expect something like that. No wonder Koenma attempted to seduce you."
"Yeah well, you have your answer Hiei." At the apparition's blank look Yusuke continued. "I have no ties left to the Reikai nor Koenma. That ended when I refused to sign the paperwork." Warm hands slid up his bare back and Yusuke knew that it was Hiei's way of telling him that he was willing to give it another shot. Leaning down slowly Yusuke pressed his lips to the apparition's, giving him plenty of time to pull away if he so desired. When he pulled back he brushed the demon's cheek once more. "Now answer my question Hiei, what's wrong?"
"Talk later Detective. Right now we have more important things to attend to." The last thing Hiei wanted to do was admit his blindness, even to Yusuke and he was holding onto hope that it would return shortly. Before he could see nothing, now he could make out vague shapes. With luck it would be back to normal come morning, all he had to do was make sure that Yusuke was exhausted before then. With the way the Toushin was pressed up against him so forcibly, he had the perfect excuse to wear the man out. Trailing his hand up along Yusuke's back, his hands made their way into the Toushin's hair and pulled him down for a forceful kiss, thrusting his tongue deep within the man's mouth.
It was a tactic the apparition used often when he didn't wish to speak of something and Yusuke knew the diversion well. Yet as Hiei became more demanding he decided to let it go, choosing to pursue more pleasurable matters. His desire grew as his hands began to wander over the apparition's exposed skin. Without breaking the kiss Yusuke threw back the covers and moved to lay next to his lover. Settling down beside him, the Toushin allowed his hands to trail over Hiei's chest, drawing lazy patterns and relishing every shiver of anticipation that he could pull from the hiyoukai.
Not being able to tell what his lover was doing just made the feelings that much more intense as Yusuke continued to torture him with his hands. Hiei tensed once more as he felt the Toushin move once again and he held his breath in anticipation of what was to come next. A groan left his chest as a warm mouth latched onto a sensitive spot of his neck, nibbling on a favored place before moving over his collarbone. "Yusuke..."
Smirking to himself Yusuke allowed one hand to settle on the inside of the apparition's thigh but made sure that he avoided any contact with the man's erection. As he continued to map out the demon's chest, Hiei began to squirm beside him trying to gain more of the contact he so desperately wanted. "Patience Hiei.. Just lay back and enjoy it." Flicking his tongue over a hardened nipple his eyes remained on his lover's face, wanting to see the lust in the demon's eyes before he took him. As roughed hands blindly reached for him though an inkling of what the apparition was going through came to him. "Oh Hiei..."
"What?" The breathy question was cut off as Yusuke took possession of his mouth once more though this time was gently, a definite change from how aggressive he was acting before. His ability to think and question was cut off once more as the detective slid his fingers along his hardened length and then gripped it gently, pulling in long, slow strokes.
Yusuke knew that it was absolute torture on the apparition who normally demanded to be taken forcibly when he was willing to submit but he refused to be demanding of his lover this time. Wanting to draw out the sweet torture for as long as he could, the Toushin began to nibble on the demon's ear even as Hiei began to thrust up into his hand. "Not so fast, just enjoy it."
Unwilling to comply with his lover's demand to take it slow, Hiei continued moving against the Detective's hand. "More dammit, I'm not going to break!" A nip to the side of his neck stopped him from continuing on with his demands. He should have known that Yusuke wouldn't play fair, he rarely did when it came to taking control and usually he didn't mind however when his lover released his hardened length a whine escaped his throat. "You can't stop now." Suddenly the bed shifted once more, indicating that Yusuke had left the bed. "Dammit where the hell are you going!"
Yusuke didn't bother to answer him as he made his way over to the supplies. A small bottle of salve was removed quickly and he returned to the bed though he didn't lay back down just yet. Instead his eyes lingered over Hiei's nude form, taking in the way the hybrid had taken over his own pleasure. As he stood there watching his own body ached for release but he wouldn't allow himself the pleasure just yet. As Hiei began panting under his own ministrations, Yusuke knew that he was close and moved to join in.
Frustrated by the lack of attention, Hiei decided that taking matters into his own hand was his only recourse. However he wasn't expecting the warm mouth to envelop the head of his erection, nor was he expecting the hands that pulled his own away from his cock and preventing himself from finding the release he so desperately sought. "Yusuke.." The word was growled out signaling he was at the end of his rope when it came to teasing. If the detective thought that he was going to stop again Hiei was more than willing to reverse their roles and fuck Yusuke into the mattress.
Swallowing reflexively as the head of the apparition's cock slid deeper into his throat, Yusuke groaned deeply, enjoying the taste of his lover once more. It'd been entirely too long since he'd had the chance to touch Hiei like this and he didn't know how much longer he'd be able to hold back even if he was try to be gently. Shaky hands unscrewed the cap to the salve, allowing the thick liquid to spill out over his fingers. Running his tongue along the underside of the length in his mouth, Yusuke felt the hands bury deep within his hair, guiding him to take even more into his mouth.
Cool fingers pressed against his opening and caused Hiei to spread his legs further apart, opening himself to the pleasure that Yusuke was offering to him. His breathing slowed as one digit was pushed deep inside him and then began moving slowly. The mouth around his cock had stilled as well allowing a talented tongue to tease a few choice spots. It was sheer torture with the slow pace the Toushin had dictated and he was hard pressed not to shove himself against that probing finger and demanding more.
Feeling that Hiei was about to go over the edge once more, Yusuke pulled back and released the apparition's aching member. Withdrawing his hand slightly he pressed a second finger deep within the man's body causing the hybrid to begin panting once more. As Hiei tried to resume pleasuring himself Yusuke was forced to stop him, gripping the offending hand and pinning it to the bed. When the apparition snarled at him and brought his other hand up, Yusuke growled low in his throat. "Don't touch it. That is my right and mine alone!" As if waiting to see if Hiei would challenge his authority, the Toushin resumed pumping his fingers deep within the tight channel brushing against the small demon's prostate repeatedly.
As Hiei threw his head back he swore that he would make the Detective pay tenfold for this. Once he was on top once more Yusuke would be lucky if he got to come once that night, by the time he was through with the Toushin the man would be on his knees begging to be allowed his release. Gasping harshly as the fingers scissored apart, Hiei wanted nothing more than for Yusuke to get on with fucking him. He was more than ready to have the man buried within him, what did the Detective want? For him to beg for it?
Releasing the hybrid's wrist and reached for the bottle of salve once more. Coating his erection with the cool liquid, Yusuke pulled his fingers free of Hiei's body and positioned himself over the apparition. Slowly he began to push into his lover, groaning as the hot passage gripped him tightly even with the preparation he'd done. Strong legs wrapped around his waist, pulling him in even deeper. "Fuck Hiei!"
"Very perceptive of you." More than ready for Yusuke to move once more, Hiei pushed up against the firm body above him while tugging Yusuke's head down to his own. Warm lips enveloped his own as the Detective began to move within him slowly. Fingers slid against his bared arms, eventually reaching his hands and lacing with his own. It felt as if he were drowning in a sea of pleasure as the Toushin rocked into him. "Ung... harder Detective!"
Acquiescing to the request, Yusuke untangled Hiei's legs from his waist and draped them over his shoulders. Shifting slightly, he pulled back only to thrust forward once move causing the apparition to call out once more. It wouldn't take long for his end to come but he wanted Hiei to go first before he spilled his seed deep within the demon's body. Reaching between them he gripped the hybrid's erection and began stroking it quickly. A keening wail escaped him the hiyoukai's lips when his prostate was struck once again. The cock in his hand throbbed as Hiei's release washed over him, creamy streaks of white painting the man's chest and stomach. As the hot channel surrounding his own aching member clenched, Yusuke's orgasm tore through him as well.
Yusuke sighed in contentment even as his spent member was pulled from the pliant body beneath him. Slowly he leaned forward and kissed Hiei tenderly before pulling away once more. "I'll be back in a minute." Based on how relaxed the apparition was now Yusuke knew it wouldn't be long before he fell asleep once again though this time he knew it would be a natural sleep instead of hibernation. Leaving the confines of the bed the Detective went in search of a towel to clean themselves up with. Finding one he got it wet before bringing it over to the fire to warm it some.
Enough time had passed that Hiei was beginning to wonder just what it was that Yusuke was doing. It was obvious he hadn't left, he could still hear the sounds of his lover moving about the cave. "What are you up to?" His answer came when the Detective knelt on the bed once more and began running a warm cloth over his stomach, cleaning all evidence of the lovemaking from his skin. Allowing his eyes to close once more, he submitted to the pampering that Yusuke was lavishing on him.
"Just taking care of you. You could have told me though, I love you Hiei and if there's some wrong I need to know." The strokes he used on his lover's body was gentle, just like the tone of voice he used. The last thing Yusuke wanted to do was piss the apparition off once more but in this instance he had every right to be concerned. "How bad is it? Do we need to go to Mukuro's?" Dropping the cloth to the floor, the Detective continued his gentle massage of the apparition's chest as he waited for the answers. If it was something serious they'd leave immediately, with the regeneration tanks at Mukuro's disposal it was almost certain that Hiei's eyesight could be restored.
Unable to avoid the conversation any longer, Hiei sighed. He should have known that Yusuke would pick up on it in spite of the distraction he had offered. "It's nothing serious, a day or so and it should be restored. It is already improving from what it was so there is no need to return so soon. Besides, I doubt she'd be happy to see you at the moment." Mukuro's reaction to the Toushin arriving on her doorstep wasn't something that he exactly wanted to see. The woman had an idea of what happened, though he hadn't gone into any real detail but she could still be a formidable adversary when she decided a problem needed to be taken care of.
"We've already spoken and come to an agreement so don't worry about that. But if you say you're fine then we'll remain here. I'd rather have you to myself anyway." Chances were as soon as they arrived at the fortress Hiei would be summoned away from his side anyway for an indefinite period of time. Until it was worked out just how things were going to go now that his home was in the Makai, Yusuke was loath to give up any of the remaining time he had with his lover.
A thin eyebrow arched upward at hearing those words, Hiei was almost afraid to ask what sort of agreement the two of them had come to and if there was any bloodshed involved. "I'm fine and I told her I would be gone for a month so you're stuck entertaining me until we go back. Think you are up to it?" Now that they had finally started working their problems out, Hiei had no intension of leaving so soon.
"Oh I think I can manage." A lecherous grin spread across Yusuke's face as he moved in closer to his lover once more. A quick glance down told him just what sort of entertainment the apparition was looking forward to at the moment and who was he to deny such a request?
As the former spirit detective moved over his lover once more, Puu raised his head and blinked slowly in the dying fire light. Finally all was right in the world once more, possessiveness and affection for the two on the bed spreading through him. As he turned once more to guard the entrance of the cave one thought became clear. Nothing would come between the two of them again, he would make sure of that.
The End.
