The night sky twinkled with billions of stars. Crickets can be heard chirping everywhere. Nothing disturbed the peace of the night, except the wind. That was until an angry looking kitsune ran by. “Damn you, baka neko! Get off me!” a female voice yelled, which came from the kitsune. The kitsune ran into a nearby park, a small form attacking it viciously.
“Where is he!” yelled the neko, once again trying to scratch the fox.
“Who are you talking about baka neko?”
The cat snarled and replied, “The dragon. He belongs to me. Tell me where he is, and I might let this incident slide!”
Sudden comprehension dawns on the kitsune's face as she reaches for a small bag tied to a belt around her waist. “You mean this thing?” She held up a small red and orange dragon that looked to be either sleeping or unconscious. You look at it in amazement. Nobody had ever managed to put Mepo out before.
“Yes, that's Mepo. Give him back. Now.”
The kitsune seemed to ponder this, and you growled in annoyance and anger. The kitsune sighed and tossed you the small dragon and started to walk away. You caught Mepo and cradled him to your chest and smiled. `At least she didn't harm you.' A questioning look appeared on your face. “Why did you kidnap Mepo in the first place?”
The fox stopped walking and faced you. You look her over and see that she has a black scarf tied around her mouth and nose to hide her face. Her glittering jade eyes bore into you from the distance at where she stood, contemplating whether to trust you or not. The night breeze blew her fiery reddish orange hair around behind her. Finally, she sighed and took off her scarf. Her fine features turned toward the moon and stars.
“He is the one that, so I have been told, that could help me find my brother. He is also very powerful and could aid me with my thieving.”
You stare at her in astonishment. `She is a thief? She is actually admitting this to me because why now? I always thought that they try to keep it a secret from others…'
Without taking her gaze from the sky, the added, “You are probably wondering why I'm telling you this, but there is something about you that seems familiar. Even so, now that I have revealed myself, you have to either join me, or die. Your choice.”
You smirked. “Typical kitsune. If I refuse both, then what?”
This turned her head from the night sky. “If you refuse, then it will be your downfall. I highly suggest you come with me. It's up to you, neko.”
“Hmm…” you walk away a little, then stop and contemplate your options. `Well, this is promising… I guess I will…' You sigh and turn to face the kitsune. “My name is Alison, but everyone calls me Ali. What's the name of my new partner?”
The fox smiled and walked toward you. Her red hair turned midnight black. Her deep jade eyes turned to a smoky grey. “The name is Debb. Nice to meet you Ali.”
~Half a year later~
“Wow! That was probably the best run we have ever had, Sage Fox. What do you say we head home now and hide the gem?”
“Patience, Kitten. We are going to have to run for it. Koenma's pawns are after us. Let's make a break for it.”
The duo ran through the now empty corridor of the ruined mansion. Dead corpses of the once alive guards littered the green marble floor. The smell of blood and death clung like a frightened little girl to the two thieves.
“Kitten, you go ahead and check things out while I see if there is anything else that Master would like us to get.” Sage Fox ran into a corridor along the way.
At the entrance, the Reikai Tantei stood menacingly. It didn't look as though they would be moving without a fight.
“Give us back the Gem of Ascalon and we won't give you too bad of an ass kicking.” Declared Yusuke.
You stop. Sage, take the gem and get out. I'll distract Koenma's pets. Hurry!
You step forward. “Well, if it isn't Yusuke Urameshi, the infamous spirit detective. What brings you here? Could it be that you only wanted to see little old me? Ah, how sweet!”
“Hn,” you hear and turn to look at Hiei. You smile seductively at him. You knew that he knew you from somewhere, but he couldn't quite place whom. This amused you greatly.
Yusuke glares at you. “Cut it out, Kitten. Give us the gem, and we can work something out with the binky baby.”
“Hmm… how do I know you will actually live up to your word, Detective?”
Kurama stepped forward. “Kitten, you have my word that you will have a chance to explain yourself.”
Kitten, I'm out and safely in Utopia. Abort mission `distract' now.
You smirked placed your index finger and thumb on your chin. “Well, it seems as though my time is up.” You start coughing and a hairball comes out of your throat. You toss it up and down a couple of times until it glows red. “It was nice seeing you all again, and I know we will meet once again. Till then,” You mock salute with two fingers and throw the glowing hairball at the group and it erupts into an explosion of gasses that smells like heaven to you. You jump out the window as the Reikai Tantei cough at your clever hairball attack. You filled it with catnip smoke, and it was one of your favourite attacks. You head northeast from the mansion, running in zigzag pattern and retrace your steps to make sure that you make them follow the wrong trail. Once you have made 3 different trails, you jump really high and jump through the trees so there are no further footsteps for them to follow. You are accustomed to this now, since you have been training with Sage Shadow for half of the year. You follow Sage's energy signature to your bakery. Upon entering, you are tackled to the floor by an orange and red mass.
“Mistress, Debb is picking on me again!”
You sigh and pick yourself off of the floor. You smile warmly at Mepo and pat him on the head on your way upstairs to take a shower. You know for a fact that Debb is upstairs in your room, putting the Gem of Ascalon in your secret vault. You have been working with Debb for a man named Innoto. Around your third month training with Debb, and after stealing a precious artifact, he came to you in a dream, telling you to meet him in a building on the outskirts of your town. Unknowingly, Debb followed and overheard the conversation. You remember with a little annoyance.
~Three months ago~
Footsteps crunched on the gravel walkway as you sped toward the meeting place. Sniffing occasionally, you catch the scent of heaven. Your eyes light up and you speed toward the smell of your beloved catnip. Following your nose, you end up in front of a giant tree. Sometime during your pursuit of the catnip, your once human shape turned sleek and small. White fur covered you now, a warm blanket against the cool air. Amethyst eyes stare up into the tree with excitement while your feline instincts guided you up the tree toward the bag of fresh catnip. You take a whiff and scratch the bag open, scooping out a little. Devouring the paw full, you purr and make cat noises. It tastes so good that you eat the rest of the bag also. Before you finish the last of it, you see a note inside the bag. Turning into your half cat, half neko form, you read it.
Alison, you have just eaten Makai catnip. I have mixed it with a poison that I have created. You will come under my wing as my new thief. Your partner, Debb is also there with you, this I know. She must join with you also. Refuse, and I will kill Tenchi, then Mepo, and then Debb. After they are dead, the poison will slowly turn you mad, eating at your brain and nerves until you cannot move. I know that you don't want this to happen, so make it easier on yourself and just submit. It won't be hard, just a few items to steal here and there… Maybe even some loot for yourselves. Please consider your options, although I'm sure you'll choose to join. I will be waiting for your decision. Come back to this tree tomorrow at 1000 hours to make your decision. Until then,
Your soon to be master,
~Innoto~
You looked higher up in the tree and, indeed, there was Debb, hanging upside down and glaring at you disappointedly.
“Do you ever think before you act, baka neko? Look at the mess you have gotten yourself into now.”
You sigh and nod sadly. “Looks like we have to accept his offer. Maybe it won't be so bad?”
The next day, you both came back to the tree and a swirling portal appeared before you. You nodded toward Debb and entered. You appeared inside a room that had giant black pillars holding up a black marble roof. Candles lay on the floor, dimly lighting a pathway in the otherwise dark room. You both followed the path wearily, making sure nothing was going to jump out at you. You eventually end up in front of a doorway that has a bead curtain covering the way. Pushing it out of her way, Debb entered first, her face as set as stone. You hung your head a bit in shame and followed. All at once, sparkling energy surrounded you both, cutting off any chance of escape.
“It seems as though you made it. Welcome, have you made your decision?” echoed a booming voice. It was forceful, yet gentle at the same time.
Debb took a step ahead of you. “Why do you want us to `join' you, Innoto? What's in it for us?”
A figure formed out of the shadows and stepped into the light that the energy was radiating. You marvel at what you see.
Jet-black hair covered his head, hiding one of his beautiful violet eyes. A black trench coat was draped elegantly over his broad shoulders. He adorned a pair of black pants that shined slightly in the faint light given off by the energy circle. A short, black scarf was tied neatly around his neck and fluffed out gently. Two katana sheaths were strapped tightly to his back that seemed to be missing the blades. You looked again and found them to be in his hands, his fingers wrapped tightly around the handle. His pale skin gave off an unearthly glow from the light. There is only one way to describe him, you thought, looking over at Debb with the same look on her face as before. Wow…
“Your lives. Have you made your decision?” he asked once again, this time more forcefully than before. Debb glared at him and stood defiantly. “We accept your offer, Innoto.”
Innoto turned to look at Debb fully. He sheathed his katanas and smirked. “Good, now there is only one thing to clear up. You shall address me as `Master', never `Innoto'. Should someone be reading your thoughts at that moment, you will have given me away. One more thing, follow me.” He took off through the circle, beckoning you both to follow. You give each other a curious glance, and then follow cautiously behind. You stare at the glowing circle, not sure if it will harm you or not. Innoto seemed to notice this, and waved the circle away. It disappeared with a bright flash, leaving you and Debb blind for a moment.
He led you forward. The room was still pitch dark, so you could do nothing but follow him. He stopped in front of a swirling portal and turned to face you both.
“When you are on a mission, you cannot go by your names anymore. Debb, You shall be known as Sage Fox. Alison, you shall be knows as Kitten. Never forget this rule. Should you break it, you will be punished severely. You have been warned. Take these.” He holds out a black ring with a dragon entwined with 2 other dragons, making it look like a braid and a silver necklace with a charm on it of the same design.. He passes Debb the ring and hands you the necklace to you. “These will be how you are connected to me. It works the same as telepathy. They shall allow you to speak to each other also. Telepathy will be how I contact you about any assignments that you get. Do not fail me. You are dismissed.” He motions to the swirling portal, and you two walk through, reluctantly.
You land first, falling into a heap on the floor that you recognize to belong to Tenchi's bakery. Before you can get up though, Debb lands on your back, causing it to crack under her weight.
“Get off, kitsune,” you growl. She gets off and faces you.
“Ali, or should I call you Kitten, next time you do something stupid, don't get me involved.”
~Normal time~
You sigh as you remember this. `She was pretty mad for a while after,' you thought glumly. After that day, you had promised yourself to always weigh out the situation. You shake your head and grab a towel out of the linen closet and head into the bathroom. You exit a little while later, leaving behind the smell of sweet honey. Heading toward your room, you get dressed in a pair of dark grey jeans and a purple tee shirt. It was late fall, but it didn't bother you much. The fire demon blood in you kept you warm during the cold weather. You let your hair down and brush it, letting it dry naturally. You head downstairs and turn the `closed' sign to `open'. You unlock the door and go to the back kitchen, feeling like making a strawberry pie.
Hey Debb, I opened the store and I'm going to be making some pie. Do you want me to make anything else while I'm at it?
Yea, sure, want to make some of your Mocha chunk cookies? Those are really good!
Mistress, would you also make some cheesecake too? Make it blueberry please.
You chuckled at Mepo's request. Sure thing guys. You get out the necessary ingredients to make your special cookies. You make them and set them near the open window in the corner of the room. You also make the cheesecake, and by the time you are finished baking, it's time to start making supper. You decide to make rice and salad. You gather the stuff to make them, when you hear the door open from the front. It sounds like a few people, so you walk out and peak your head around the corner. You smile happily when you see who is there.
Mepo, hide yourself. We have customers downstairs.
“Hey guys! What brings you here?”
Yusuke, Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara stand in the front. They greet you and Debb comes down from taking a shower. The guys had come over frequently to visit you, and Debb had met them. You began to notice, during their visits, that Debb has developed some feelings for Shuichi, or Kurama rather. You smile slightly as you decide to help things along later. Debb greets them and starts to talk with them.
“I'm sorry, but I have to go and make some supper. Will you be staying?”
They all agreed and you went to the back kitchen to finish making supper. You make lots, making sure that there will be enough for Yusuke and Kuwabara with enough left for everyone else. After making supper, you serve it on the island counter in the middle of the kitchen. You call everyone in and you all eat. After supper, the guys tell both of you that they have to go, so Debb gives them some sweets to take with them. After bidding them goodbye, Debb decided to go home. She lives closer to the centre of town, only three blocks away. She leaves, bidding you goodnight and taking the rest of the cookies with her. You laugh at her a little. `Never would I have thought that I would get her hooked on coffee,' you thought, shaking your head and heading upstairs. You take the cheesecake with you, knowing that Mepo will be slightly angry for being left out of supper. You set it down on your desk, which was where Mepo often dwelled in. Shortly after you got it, you gave up trying to keep him out of the drawers. He had completely claimed it, so you let him. After all, where else would you hide him?
“Mepo, I got a yummy surprise for you!” you called out, knowing that he could hear you. Not even two seconds pass when you see Mepo staring at the cake, drooling.
“Yuck, you have to clean that, not me. Oh well, enjoy.” You let him eat as you got dressed into a long, baggy red tee shirt and got into bed. You lay there, thinking about the recent assignment that Innoto gave you. `What is he planning to do with the Gem of Ascalon? That gem could be the key that Debb is looking for. It has the power to find her brother… and mine. Maybe even my sister, too… that is if she is still alive. Oh well, maybe we will find out later.' With that, you fall into a peaceful sleep.
