Chapter 2: Only This and Nothing More

A/N: First off I want to say I"m trying to stay as close to each character's personality as possible. As a fan of the show it really irritates me when someone takes the characters and make them act like a bunch of mindless idiots.
In comedies it's ok to a point (but even those have their limits). I think the one thing that is the worst is when people have Hiei say "Hn" like twenty times in the same chapter. Maybe it's just me but even though he dose use it it's not something that is needed in every other sentence.
Secondly I've never been good at making up names so I'm just using the first thing that pops into my head. (With the execption of a few names. Some of them actually mean something but I can't say right now because it would interfere with the story).
Lastly the plot is moving slowly along and it's ticking me off to no end. I know where I want the story to go I'm just having some difficulty getting to that point. As far as when my character will make an appearance I'm thinking at this rate it won't be until somewhere until the end of the third chapter possibly the fourth.
A bit of usless information. The title was actually from the poen the Raven by Edger Allen Poe. For some reason that particular phrase just got stuck in my head when I was trying to come up with a name for this chapter.

In the middle of a nearly deserted office building stood a mand drinking a glass of brandy. Looking out the window he watched as the lightning dance across the sky in a ballet of flickering lights. Thunder cracked outside the window shaking the glass, his entire body grew tense with anticipation waiting for the call from HQ. Seconds seemed to melt into eternity when suddenly the phone beside him came to life. Holding his breath for a moment he picked up the reciver placing it to his ear.
"Goshin how are things on your end"?
"W-well the situation is under control. As it stands now we should be ready for the next phase in couple of weeks".
"That's not good enouth. I need results and I need them now. The senoir partners are getting edgy with all the problems your department has been having as of late. I want the result for the next part of the project on my desk by the end of the week. No excuses".
"That's imposible I need a new--"
"It's being taken care of as we speak. You should be receiving the "package" within the hour".
"I understand. I'll have the lab prepaired".
"Good I don't want any more screw ups.I can't insure the safty of your employment if we have a repeat of Los Angelus". With that said the phone suddenly went dead. Goshin took one shaky hand tilting his glass until the contents were gone, refilling it and repeating the prosess.

"What the hell is taking those two so long", Kuwabara shouted out? "This is so damn aggravating. We have bigger problems then worring about when those two feel it's important enough to show up"
"I might hit you upside that oversized head of yours if i thought it would do your brain any good... but I suppose you can't fix what's not there."
"What was that shrimp? You want to come say that to my face?"
"Your not worth my time."
Kurama steped out of the shadows clearing his throat. "We have bigger problems right now this can wait till later."
"You would be correct Kurama. There has been some disturbing reports comming from the makai." A thick tension filled the air as Koenma sat behind his desk sifting through the large stack of papers in front of him. "It would appear the semingly randon attacks on the barrier were in fact more organised then first realized. As far as we can tell at this point the small group of demons were actually being controled by an unknown source. This in and of it's self is not what bothers me so much as the more recent findings."
"And that would be", Yusuke impatiently asked.
"Well you see... the thing is there has been an unnaturaly large amount of demon agression as of late. As far as our sources can tell it is of a unknown nature. There is something out there changing these demons and causing such unnatural behavior".
"So what exactly do you want us to do about it? It's not like you're being a fountain of information here. I'm already going to get "the lecture" once Keiko finds out I have to break our date for this".
"Well I'm sorry Yusuke but I think this is a bit more important. There is no telling what kind of evil is ploting these attacks and we need to find out and soon. Or are you willing to have a repete of what happened with Souji"?
Yusuke visably winced at the mention of the name. It had been a few months ago, but the memory was still fresh in his minds eye as though it had been only been days. Souji had been, for the most part, a weak adversary but the amount of dammage he had caused was staggering. All of the people that had suffered at his hands would never remember any of that particular nightmare, thanks to spirit world.
"So I want you three to go to the Makai and do some of your own "special investgating" and get to the bottom of this".
"Yeah, yeah, yeah... hey wait what are you talking about three"?
"I want Hiei, Kuwabara and yourself to go on ahead. I have something else of importance I need Kurama to take care of at the Kegasu corperation. I doubt it will take long. I will have Botan open a portal directly to you when he is finished. So if there arn't any more questions you should leave immediately."
"Kegasu... Isn't that one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Japan? If I'm not mistaken they have made some ground breaking discoveries in organic medicine".
"Yes Kurama you are correct".
As usual Kuwabara stood in the background completely dumbfounded, just trying to stay in the conversation, when he put his two cents in. "What do they have to do with anything? We're supose to be looking into demons not some drug company".
"Well Kuwabara it doesn't. This is another matter all together. One that I might add is of no immportance to you. Now if you'll excuse me I have some papers that need my approval so if you would--"
Suddenly the doors to Koenma's office flew open, a horror stricken blue haired girl rushed in. Her face pale, clothes drenched with water. She fell to her knees, trying to catch her breath, eyes wide with fear.
"Lord Koenma something awful has happened. I tried to stop it but I couldn't there was just too may of them and..."
"Botan please calm down and tell me what happened."
"They've got her".
"Who"?
"Yukina. They took Yukina. I tryed to stop them... we've got to do something."
