Blood Ties: The Ties that Bind

Disclaimer: Does it really need to be said?

Sunari pushed past the crowd of people, narrowly avoiding a rather large suitcase from crashing into her. She heaved a sigh; the airport terminal was like walking into a death trap. “Flight 186 from Seattle arriving now at Gate 5…” The woman’s voice echoed over the intercom. She raked a hand through her tangled hair, stopping to take in a breath. She hadn’t seen her sister in years. It was sad to think this would be reunion was brought on by the anniversary of their mother’s death.

Sunari gasped in pain, grabbing her right foot and cradling it. She watched the rather obese man who stepped on it walk away, without a thought in the world. “Damn…” She muttered, gaining her feet. The gentle touch of another being startled her and she grabbed it, flipping the rather light person over her shoulder. She recognized the black hair immediately as it came into her view, maneuvering her leg so that said person wouldn’t land hard on the floor. “You shouldn’t sneak up on me, Kyllian.”

Her identical twin smirked, almost evilly. “You must be getting tame in your old age, Suna. I’m sorry I thought you would have sensed my presence.”

Sunari helped her sister to her feet. “My mind isn’t really with me today.”

“Understood…so this is Tokyo eh?” Sunari nodded, grabbing Kyllian’s suitcase. “This is what you left Seattle for? Seems crowded…”

Sunari shrugged, hoisting the suitcase up. “It’s not so bad once you get used to it.” She began walking toward the exit. “Come on.”

Kyllian followed her sister to her car. The weather outside was warm and inviting and amongst the multitude of people she felt oddly welcome. “A girl could definitely get used to this.”

Sunari rolled her eyes, pulling her car keys from her pocket. “Yes, well don’t. We’ve never really done well together in the same area code. This week is going to be severely pushing it.” Kyllian looked down at her feet, a deep sadness overwhelming her. Sunari glimpsed at her. “What?”

“Nothing…I mean I know you’re right. I just miss you, Suna.”

Sunari scoffed, “oh don’t. Don’t start that Kyllian. What? Did you spend the money mom left you? Is the business going to shits? You’ve never missed me before.”

Kyllian looked at her sister, unshed tears threatening to overwhelm her. “That’s not true SJ. I’ve always missed you. I just don’t know how to talk to you anymore…” Sunari turned away from her sister, popping the trunk and shoving her suitcase inside. “Our whole family is gone Sunari. We have no one left accept each other. Please don’t shut me out…”

Sunari remained silent as she closed the trunk. A relationship between them had always been a lost cause. Ever since Kyllian stole –and married- the man she thought she loved. That was over 70 years ago now. That man was no longer alive, and though it pained her to admit it…Kyllian was right. They really had no one left. Their birth parents walked out on them almost thirty years ago and their adoptive mother walked into the light as they always knew she would. She felt empty inside as she get in the car. Kyllian sat silently in the passenger seat.

“Do you ever wonder what it would have been like if our real parents hadn’t walked out on us?”

Sunari thought a moment. “No, why would I? Why would you? Barbra was our mother. If it hadn’t been for her we’d still be orphaned and thieving our way through the town.”

Kyllian smiled, leaning her head back against the head rest. “I know you’re right. I just can’t help but wonder. At a hundred and twenty eight it still keeps me up at night. If they had kept us, we wouldn’t have to know the pain of burying someone we love…”

Sunari glimpsed at her sister. “Yes, but we would never know human compassion either. We’d still be full of hate for the human race. What she saw in us that day I’ll never know. Kami knows we committed our fair share of crimes against her kind. But she didn’t care what we were. She loved us; furry and all.” Sunari let a tear run down her face. “I don’t want to talk about this anymore. We’re wasting daylight. I made all of mom’s favorites. I thought you might like to go to the park and eat?”

Kyllian nodded, wiping her face with the back of her hand. “Yes, that does sound lovely.”

Despite the amount of people the park was rather nice, Kyllian noted. They took their seats beneath the single willow tree. “This place is almost too good to be true.” Kyllian said, laying the blue flannel blanket over the freshly mowed grass. The smell gave her a sense of peace. Sunari sat down opening the classic picnic basket. Kyllian breathed deeply. “You’ve definitely outdone yourself this time, Sinner.”

Sunari looked over at her sister. It had been years since she had heard the name, and while it carried with it a tint of regret should found it made her feel…real. She placed the homemade sushi rolls and rice balls on the blanket and grabbed the rather large carton of ice cream she had spent years trying to perfect. Green tea ice cream was a feat all its own but she was now proud to share it with her sister. “Yes, well I didn’t go to cooking school for eight years to admire my cooking teacher.”

Kyllian popped a piece of Sushi in her mouth, moaning at the taste. “Why you ever switched majors is beyond me.”

Sunari smiled, taking a bite of the ice cream and licking the spoon thoroughly. Ice cream, she was certain, was a god send. “Cooking never saved anyone’s life.” She finally answered, looking amidst the chaos of the park. Her gaze settled on a rather large family, cooking and tossing a hefty red ball around. “Look at them,” she told her sister, who was still savoring the flavors in her mouth. “What I wouldn’t give to be happy like that…”

Kyllian smiled, chewing thoughtfully on her lip. Her attention was quickly captured by a red head with green eyes. Beside him stood another man; something about her hair made her giddy inside. It seemed to defy gravity…and he certainly looked good in black. It was wrong to imagine him naked, she told herself. “But what I wouldn’t give to have an ass like that.” Sunari was pulled out of her revere at her sisters words. What in the hell was she…her face was a deep shade of red, as she threw an empty cup at her sister.

“Can’t you control your libido for one day? Jesus.” Kyllian flared in mock anger, placing the cup upright beside her. “Don’t give me that look. I’m the one who should be mad at you. If you weren’t such a rotten sister I could have had a man like that.”

Kyllian laughed whole heartedly. “Trust me when I tell you, Charles was not a man like that.” She pondered for a moment. “Come now, you can’t actually tell me you had feelings for him…”

“No, but I thought I did, which is more than I can say for you.”

Kyllian put on the innocent look and went to protest when a big red ball hit her in the face. Sunari stared at her sister a moment before bursting out in laughter. Kyllian shoved her hard, holding the red ball firmly in her hands. “Laugh it up fur ball.” And laugh she did.

The little girl trotting their way caught Sunari’s attention and she quickly sobered up. Kyllian smiled at the child, holding out the ball to her. “I believe this belongs to you?”

The child nodded. “Yes ma’am. Thank you.” She took the ball looking down at the ice cream below her. “Wow that looks awfully good!”

Sunari chuckled but never got the chance to respond before a large shadow was casted over them. She looked up at the tall man before them…was that orange hair? He put a hand on the child’s head and she grinned up at him.

“Are you alright, miss? Sorry about my daughter; paying attention has never really been her strong suit.”

“I am fine, thank you. I guess we are kind of like sitting ducks out here.” Kyllian answered, standing to her feet. “My name is Kyllian, and that’s my sister, Sunari.” She inclined her head in Sunari’s direction, extending her hand. The man took it, looking back and forth between them both.

“Kazuma Kuwabara. This is my daughter, Yuki.”

Kyllian leaned down, poking Yuki’s nose. “Yes, I believe we have met.” Yuki blushed and hid behind her father. Kuwabara laughed, turning back to look at his shy daughter. “We were just about to offer her some ice cream.” Kyllian gestured at the large container. “Would your family be interested? My sister made plenty.”

Kuwabara looked over at Sunari. If not for their substantially diverse hair colors, he would never be able to tell the difference between them. “I think they would enjoy that very much, Miss Kyllian.” Considering the man in charge of dessert had forgotten…

Sunari flushed, both in anger and embarrassment. This poor man just helped Kyllian commit a terrible offense. She was engaged in the act of covetousness…for two men. Sunari sighed. Seeing no way out of it, she quietly packed up the remainder of their things and appointed herself ashamed.
