Sunari sighed, twirling her straw around in her flat soda. In the short amount of time that Kyllian had to make her impression on these poor, unknowing strangers, she had managed to tell them their whole life story. Sunari was surprised; she must have done this before. Only her sister could create a story so vivid, so dramatic and so real without revealing the whole truth. Kyllian would call it improvising, but Sunari chose to call it what it was: lying.
On the brighter side, her ice cream had been devoured quickly. If there was one thing she was good at it was cooking…aside from saving lives, it made her feel like she had a purpose. Amongst all the chatter Sunari had lost track of the time as she noticed dusk was quickly approaching. There was a chill in the air and Sunari wrapped her arms around herself. Beside her, her sister kept on. At this point, Sunari was appalled. In truth though she was relieved; to not have to speak unless spoken to (which in this case was few and far between) was kind of nice. The small black coat draped around her small form brought Sunari back from her thoughts.
“You were shivering.” Her golden eyes locked onto crimson orbs. They spoke volumes to his person without ever really speaking. She found herself unable to hide the blush that tinted her face.
“Thank you, Hiei.” In the mad dash Kyllian had made to introduce herself to everyone Sunari hardly had time to remember all their names. She could only hope that she had been right. Gods curse Kyllian if she wasn’t. The man smiled, if it could even be called that. A half smile half smirk was more like it. Either way, it sent her stomach in knots.
Hiei took his seat beside the fox, wondering what it was that had compelled him to commit such an act. He admitted that over the years he had grown softer; there was less of a burning desire to control things and more of a need to settle down into something more routine. What that meant he had no idea, but he was beginning to see a picture. Kurama cast a glance his direction, a smile plastered on his face. “Hn.” The koorime ignored his friends silent prodding.
Sunari yawned after a while, feeling the effects of being up so early in the morning. Sleep was fleeting to her anymore. She touched her sister’s shoulder, standing to her feet. Kyllian looked up at her, silently asking they stay a little while longer. “It’s been quite an evening with you guys. It’s also getting late and Yuki seems to have fallen asleep. I don’t know about the rest of you but I have to work early in the morning and I’m sure we could all use some sleep.”
“I second that,” said Yusuke, standing to stretch. He extended his hand to Keiko and helped her up.
The woman glared at her husband. “As if you’ve ever been sleep deprived a day in your life Yusuke.”
The boy laughed. “I’m getting all the sleep in I can before the baby comes.” He rubbed his wife’s stomach fondly. Keiko snuggled into his touch.
Beside him, Kuwabara stood, holding Yuki in his arms. Yukina gathered what belonged to them and they bid their farewell.
“It was a pleasure meeting you Sunari. Kyllian, I hope to hear more about your business soon!” Kyllian nodded her head, a smile on her face.
Keiko walked around the table and embraced Kyllian. “You have my number. I hope we can keep in touch.” She turned to Sunari, a warm smile on her face. “Thank you for sharing the evening with us, and thank you for your wonderful ice cream. Come by the restaurant sometime, maybe we can start a business endeavor?”
“Of course, I would enjoy doing that. It’s not every day someone asks me to cook for them.” Keiko patted her shoulder once more before leaving with her husband.
Sunari turned toward Hiei. She supposed it was time to re-gift his kind offering. Taking off the coat she handed it to him, feeling slightly morose. He shook his head. “No, you hold onto it. You’ll get more use out of it than me I’m sure.”
“Are you sure? It’s an awfully nice coat, Hiei. I’d hate for anything to happen to it.”
“Don’t worry; I have plenty more where that came from.” The atmosphere changed slightly.
“Oh, well…thank you than. Goodnight.” She turned away from him, trying to hide her anger. Kyllian watched after her, quickly grabbing the picnic basket she left in her wake.
“Thanks again Kurama, Hiei. Good bye!”
Hiei pinched the bridge of his nose. Gods he was so dense sometimes. What coerced him to say such a thing? Beside him Kurama couldn’t help but chuckle, placing his hand on Hiei’s shoulder in a friendly gesture. “Don’t worry my friend. The beauty of Green Tea ice cream is it’s everyone’s favorite flavor.”
Hiei rolled his eyes, understanding the meaning behind his friend’s words. He was going to need a lot of it if he ever hoped to make up for this one. “Hn.”
The smell of bacon woke Kyllian. She ran a lazy hand through her hair, one eye checking the time. 6a.m. What in the hell possessed her sister to wake up at this ungodly hour? She sat up, knowing she was going to regret getting out of bed. She stepped onto the hardwood floor and grinned. Heated floors... Who’d a thought?
The light in the kitchen was much brighter than she anticipated and she flinched away from it. Still dressed in her work out attire, Sunari turned her attention to her sister. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. There really is no way to cook bacon quietly. Kyllian shrugged, rubbing her eyes of the last bit of sleep.
“That’s alright, I wasn’t sleeping well anyway.” In hindsight, taking the Red Eye here had not been her brightest idea. She had stayed awake all day yesterday, forgetting the massive time change and was now paying for it dearly. “What in the world are you doing up this early anyway?” It was the question that begged to be asked.
“I am always up this early. I was up at five, but I went on a jog to help me wake up. Breakfast, as you can see, is promptly at six. Shower at six thirty and work at eight.”
Kyllian laughed; regardless of how much seemed to change it was obvious that not much did. “You and your schedules; I forgot how much those used to rule your life. Still do, apparently.”
Sunari turned off the stove, placing the last strips of bacon on a plate neatly. She took a seat on the barstool next to her sister, the sun finally beginning to rise and shine in the window behind them. “Schedules are good for the soul; would have done some good for you in school. You know, for being identical twins we sure act like we were born on opposite ends of the spectrum.”
Kyllian looked down at her sister’s plate. On top of one piece of toast laid two over easy eggs for the eyes and a strip of bacon for the face. “That’s not completely true,” she said, stealing the piece of bacon and eating it before Sunari could protest. “We still do some things exactly alike.”
