Blood Ties: Secrets
Blood Ties: Secrets
Sabryiel looked at the red head before her. As of tonight they had been secret lovers for six months, though she had loved him much longer than that. Their first meeting had been brief; he had bumped into her in the hallway on the way to his next class. She remembered him apologizing profusely and helping her to her feet. He was off again before she could thank him. After that, their encounters were few and far between. She began to ignore all her childish feelings for him, until she saw him on the roof her junior* year of high school.
What compelled her to go to him, she’d never know. What she did know was that she learned something valuable that day; the love you can’t have lasts the longest, feels the strongest, and hurts the most. “Kurama,” she spoke his name tenderly. He looked into her chocolate orbs and she felt her knees go weak. “Sadness is just love wasted. You’re mother is going to be just fine. I promise…” She swept a lock of hair behind his ear, surprised he was letting her get so close. Of all the fan girls he avoided, what made her any different? She was, after all, her own little fan club. One filled with troubles and doubts of lust and love.
He kissed her then, but it was fleeting. She hardly had time to memorize the feeling before it was gone. She sighed as the memories rushed back to her. Six months ago he ran into her again on her way to the bathroom, only this time he caught her before she tumbled to the floor. It had started at that very moment and she knew she could never go back.
Tonight they were celebrating their six months…of what? Their surreptitious act? But it had been what she asked for. And he had agreed so earnestly…it had to have been what he himself had wanted too. It was selfish of her to want to enjoy the man she had loved for so long, but under her circumstances it felt wrong to tell him how she truly felt. What could she say? She was only human…
Kurama looked over at her when she sighed. He wondered if she was feeling like he was; slightly depressed. For four years he had wanted to tell her how he felt. From the moment he ran into her in the hallway and the day he kissed her lips he always felt as if she belonged to him. There was something about her that made him feel…alive. The feeling was powerful…and lingering. The great thief had never felt feelings like this before. The puzzled and confused him…but above it all he loved it so. Loved her so… He had long since given up on a relationship with her when the Rekai Tentai took over his life. But there she was, sitting in Keiko’s restaurant…with another man.
Suddenly he felt angry. After all these years of wondering what it would be like to even really touch this girl there was no way he was going to give it up to some half witted child. She got up to use the restroom and he took his chance. In the act of love he found himself engaging in the most mundane ways. Would she even remember his name? The look on her face confirmed his question.
He was going to ask her to be his right then and there, but he stopped himself. Human women were not like demon women. They required certain finesse. “Kurama, before we go any further there is one thing you must remember; never fall in love with me. I lack the ability to give you a long term commitment.” Her words had cut him like a knife, but he didn’t argue with her. If agreeing to her depressing commands was going to make her his (for any length of time) he would take what he could get. As a result, he had never met any of her family and friends and he had never met hers. Whatever it took to keep her by his side…
“Can I get you anything else this evening?” The waiter pulled them back in the moment.
“No, I think we’re ready to retire for the night.” Kurama looked at Sabryiel for conformation.
She nodded; a polite smile on her face. “Yes, thank you.” Placing the check on the table, the young waiter took his leave. In truth she wasn’t feeling well…hadn’t been since this morning, but she wasn’t going to let it spoil her evening. Kurama had noticed a subtle change in her. She seemed tired, and a bit beaten around the edges. He reached over, brushing her thick white bangs back. He admitted it was an odd color for a woman her age but it made her unique. Her hair was almost never changing; remaining the same ‘scene’ hair style he had first glimpsed it in. The only difference was a single black strip through her bangs. He would never understand women and their hair.
“Are you alright, Bri?”
She gazed at him, his green eyes making her feel lost. “Yes, I’m fine.” She held his hand. “Dinner was lovely. Thank you.” Before Kurama could respond, Sabryiel stood to her feet, rushing to the bathroom leaving a puzzled Kurama in her absence.
She returned moments later, more than ready to admit defeat and ask Kurama to take her home. He understood the look of pain across her face. This wasn’t the first time she had been ill around him and he doubted it would be the last. He stood to his feet, leaving cash on the table and ushering them out of the restaurant. “You wait here,” he told her. “I’ll go get the car.”
She nodded because words escaped her. It took only moments for Kurama to pull the car around. He roughly shoved the black mustang in park and rushed to help Sabryiel inside. Once settled, he buckled her in and hurriedly returned to the driver’s seat. She lost some time. When she realized where they were, she didn’t have the energy to fight it. Even if she thought she could, she wanted to be with Kurama tonight. She lost more time. She barely registered when Kurama wrapped his arms around her, carrying her into his house. Dimly lit was the driveway and after that was the ugly brown door she had come to love. She leaned her head against his shoulder. “Kurama…” Her voice was shallow.
He hushed her. “Just let me take care of you tonight.” He laid her on the bed, gently taking off her little slip on heels before laying her back completely. She really was perfect. She blinked lazily at him. He brushed the damp hair from her face, her forehead hot to the touch. “It’s okay to rest, Bri. I’ll go get you some water and wet cloth.” He stood to his feet, walking to his hall closet. Taking a plain white cloth into the bathroom, he turned the water on and soaked the rag. Quickly filling a small glass with cold water he hurried back to Sabryiel.
Upon his return Sabryiel had fallen into sleep. He was panic stricken, placing the cool cloth on her head. He could only hope that given enough time her fever would lessen and her sleep would be peaceful. Pulling a seed from his night stand, he set it in the small glass of water. A soft green aura gently swam around the glass and the small seed was quickly replaced by a single stem of lavender* leaves. If he couldn’t completely take away her pain, he could at least try to lessen it some.
He had his thoughts on what it was that was ailing her. His suspicions had only been confirmed when she had rushed to the bathroom, leaving her purse behind her. He couldn’t imagine a life without her by his side. She was his pride, his love, and more importantly, the key to his happiness. She was his addiction; and an addiction is still an addiction. It always hurts the same.
*- Firstly, I’m not sure how class ranks go in Japan. Google was not much help in this area. If you know anything, please tell me.
*- You might be wondering why I chose Lavender. The reason is such; Lavender is a sedative. You can find Lavender in two forms: oil, and its natural state. In its natural state, Lavender is said to be able to quell vomiting and/or nausea.
