Sunari walked into her office, feeling flustered. Her sister had not been there this morning. It unnerved her. Could she have been that angry to travel to the Makai to get away from it all? It seemed unlikely, but at the same time, it seemed like Kyllian. She was never good at admitting when she had indeed been in the wrong. She sat in her chair, ruffling a hand through her hair. “You never called.” Sunari gasped, startled at the other presence in her office. “Sorry, I didn’t intend to startle you.”
Sunari looked up at Hiei, a small smile on her face. “What did you think would happen when you snuck up on me?” Hiei shrugged, looking around Sunari’s office. It was clean; orderly. The smell of humans made him uneasy. Not that he minded them so much anymore; no, that wasn’t it. It was the multitude of them that made him nervous. He had never been a social person. “I really need to have a talk with my assistant…What can I do you for, Hiei?”
“Your assistant is not here today. I came to see how you were…seeing as you bailed out on me the other night.” Hiei sat in the chair before her mahogany desk, his legs one over the other and his arms crossed. His attire had changed from the last time she had seen him. Black was a nice color, but white suited him even better. Sunari blushed; human emotions didn’t always have the best timing. She quickly looked away from him, but not before Hiei had noticed.
Her mind lingered on Sabryiel. She was always here; this place was her second home. And for her to not call meant something terrible was wrong. She brushed it off, coming back into the moment.
“I’m sorry Hiei. I had previous plans to attend to. Rest assured, it was nothing against you.”
“Hn. Alright than; what were these ‘previous plans’?”
Sunari looked up at him incredulously. How could he be so demanding of her? They’d known each other for less than two weeks and he was already questioning her. “I don’t see how that’s any concern of yours, Hiei.” She said, slight anger dripping off her words. “If you must know, my sister and I spent the evening catching up.”
“Catching up?” Hiei seemed unsatisfied with her answer. They were sisters after all. How much catching up could there be to do? Sisters always kept in touch; at least the ones here did.
“Yes, Hiei; catching up. You know, updating each other on all the things we’ve missed over the years.”
Hiei fought the urge to growl Sunari. “I am aware of the definition, woman. I was merely curious what it is you two were ‘catching up’ on.”
Sunari cocked an eyebrow. If this was a habit of his, she wasn’t sure she liked it. “Again, that is none of your concern. Hiei, what is it that you want? I doubt you came here with the intention to piss off and annoy me. If you don’t mind, I have things to do; people to see.”
Hiei simply stared at her, mock anger radiating from his still form. She had spunk, of that he was sure. He thought for a moment. If she had the power to send him into new dimensions of pissed off, what else could she accomplish? “Go out with me.” He finally spoke. “Tonight; you do, after all, owe me.”
Sunari blinked. He never ceased to surprise her. Make her giddy inside and forget all the annoyances she previously had with him. She softened. She could say no, despite what she wanted. He would, after all, deserve it. But she deserved this? Didn’t she? In her resolve, she nodded. “What time?”
“You have reached the voice mailbox of –” Sunari groaned, flipping shut her cell phone. Kyllian’s phone was off. Had been since early that morning…what could she possibly be doing? In her previous travels to the Makai, Kyllian had found it distasteful and boring. She spent little time with the pack there, and when she did show up it was always a surprise. If she truly was there, she must have really changed over the years to be there so long. Sunari debated going there before checking the time. 6:00 o’clock. Hiei seemed like the type to be on time to everything and seven would roll around way before she got to the Makai and back.
She heaved a sigh. If it was space Kyllian wanted, than fine. Sunari would proceed after her tomorrow, when things would be calmer.
At 7:01 Hiei pulled up in his…Sunari swallowed hard. It became quite evident that Hiei was going places. Places that earned him money. The Shelby GT hummed in her driveway and she felt a little woozy. Since the first time she came to human world that had been the car she had idolized. In shitty condition this car was worth her very soul and the pristine grey 69’ GT sat in her driveway. Her knees went weak just thinking about it. The doorbell rang, bringing her out of her girlish fantasy. Quickly smoothing down her brown dress, and making sure her hair was still in place, she rushed to greet Hiei.
She was lost in his gaze when she opened the door. Tonight he was adorned in browns and blues; formal clothes. She groaned, suddenly feeling under dressed and out of place in her little sun dress. He took her hand, sensing her panic. “You look lovely.” She blushed, walking out the door before closing it.
“Thank you Hiei. You look…lovely as well.” She cursed mentally. She really was no good at this dating thing. It wasn’t like medicine. Dating was a bunch of complicated equations all thrown into one. It was never bottom line or straight to the point. Hiei opened the door for her, which brought her back to her previous escapade. At this point, it was clear to see that some alterations had been made. Things like cloth interior instead of leather, and a brand name system rather than the stock system. The alterations weren’t enough to make it look too modern; just enough to make it feel custom. She took in a breath, sitting careful on the seats as if she would break them. Closing the door, Hiei hurried to the driver’s seat.
Sunari ran her fingers along the gold trim on the glove compartment. She realized she would see her soul to the devil for this vehicle, and laughed at the very thought. “What is it?” Hiei asked with a concerned look on his face. He put the car in reverse and slowly rode out of the driveway.
A rush of embarrassment raced along Sunari’s senses and she quickly sat back and in her seat. “It’s silly.” She admitted.
Hiei kept his eyes on the road, the engine roaring loudly. “Try me.”
“I guess you can say I have a thing for cars…this car in particular...” It felt weird to divulge such information to another being. But Hiei wasn’t just anyone, she decided. He was special. The mental note made her sad. There was no way they could ever have a real relationship…what with her not being human. She shrugged it off, content to just be in the moment for now.
“Oh?” Hiei stopped at the red light and flipped on his blinker.
“Since I was…a little girl I have always wanted this car; maybe not in this color but definitely this car.” She paused to look around her. These surroundings were not ones she was familiar with. After fifteen years of living here she still kept to what she knew. “Er, where are we going Hiei?”
Hiei was smiling. A woman who had a fascination with cars…who’d a thought? Cars had become Hiei’s forte after all their fighting in the Makai had drawn to a much needed close. He found working on them relaxed him…and Ophylia was just the beginning of all he’d done. “Little restaurant in China Town. Keiko and Yusuke own it. I thought it would be a nice change of scene? If you’d like, we can go elsewhere?”
Sunari thought about it for a moment. “No, it sounds lovely. It will be nice to see Keiko and Yusuke again.”
“You’re sister came by earlier this morning; dropped in to say hello.”
“Did she?” Sunari tried to hide the surprise in her voice. But to no avail on her part. “I mean…right, she told me. Just not when. Did she stay long?”
Hiei thought a moment. “Long enough to stay and eat; she chatted with Keiko about the baby but was gone soon after she had finished her food. Why?”
Sunari quickly erased all question on her face. Tonight was not a night to worry about her sister. This was supposed to be her worry free night; a night of complete and utter relaxation. Kyllian would come tomorrow. “Just curious is all.” She finally answered, putting her thoughts behind her.
