Blood Ties: Rumor Has It

Kurama’s heart was racing. The entire ride to Genkai’s Sabryiel didn’t say one word. Nor did she stir from the sleep that claimed her moments before he arrived at the shrine. She was dying, Kurama could be sure of that simple fact now. Leukemia was taking her life and she was so far gone from it that Kurama could count the days she had left on his hands. If anyone could fix her, it was Yukina…
He had fallen for the girl despite her words; words he now knew the true meaning of. He associated this kind of hurt with the hurt he felt when his mother was ill. The hurt that claimed him every day until Yusuke had given part of his life for her. Only this hurt…was different. Kurama had learned many things while in The Ningenkai, but of all of them human loss affected him the most.
Just two years before this Yusuke, the brave and noble ex Spirit Detective and present Demon Lord, had died twice now. It was more apparent to him at that moment then it had ever been: human life was fragile. Yukina slid open the wooden door quietly, closing it in the same gentle matter. She seemed distraught but at the same time, not. Kurama stood to his feet, an eager expression on his face. Was she well now? Could he take her home?
Yukina put a gentle hand on his shoulder. “I am sorry, Kurama, there is nothing I can do for her. Human diseases aren’t like demon diseases.” Yukina let a tear fall from her face, a single tear gem falling to the floor and rolling to the edge of the wall. “Sabryiel has accepted this, Kurama. Perhaps you should as well. Spend what time you have together in happiness…”
Kurama took that as it came to him. Of course she had already accepted it. He just found out and she had practically known her entire life. None of this seemed fair, but in his resolve he nodded his head. If they only had days left, he was going to make them count. He stood to his feet, entering Sabryiel’s room…

Nina had commented that the Pitocin entering her body felt odd. Sunari told her it was the warm liquid no doubt as she broke her water. The pregnant werewolf was too engulfed in excitement to care either way. Little did she know; that excitement wouldn’t last long as the contractions started. Sunari still had some time for that yet. She took her leave, setting on finding Cal. If they were going to bring Dexter back there was no greater time than now. Before Nina entered labor…
Sunari gathered up the small bag, walking toward Cal. He was finishing up his dinner…something she wished she had time to enjoy before. Cal quickly stood to his feet, handing his empty plate to Kyllian. “My Queen, are you ready?”
Sunari nodded. “Yes, lead the way. We should be quick; it won’t take long for Nina to go into labor. Our window of opportunity is slimming.”
“Understood, Sunari,” and they took off in the direction of Dexter’s body.

Hiei sat down at his desk. The smell of death so close to his territory made him irritable. There was a lot more of that lately. Death anyway… Yomi seemed to have an insatiable hunger for bloodshed. Hiei had never cared about it before; but the stench so close to his territory was becoming a habit for him. Hiei stretched. He had nothing better to do and he needed to burn off some much needed anger. He would speak with Yomi.

Sunari waited patiently as Cal dug up his brother. To say she was nervous was an understatement. It was true that Mukuro had never cared one way or the other about her kind. Sunari had only met the woman once and it was brief if anything. Mukuro had allowed her and her kin access through her territory at anytime so long as it was a short period of instance and they didn’t bring her into Yomi’s problems. For over a century Sunari had agreed to her demands. But since Mukuro’s passing, Sunari feared things might be different with the new ruler. Since her human mother was aging faster as the years went by, Sunari had never bothered to meet said ruler. Seeing as how her travels to the Makai became scarce; she only came to the Makai two days before the full moon and left shortly after that.
Now she wished she had become acquainted with said ruler. She wouldn’t be so wrecked with emotions. Dexter’s body was pulled from the ground, blood caked and battered. Sunari gasped, covering her hand with her mouth. According to Cal he had only been buried for a few days, but the stench was that of someone who had died years ago, left in a sewer. She fought the urge to vomit. “I’m sorry Sunari; we should have better prepared him before this. We’ve all been on edge since Yomi’s last attack.”
Sunari waved his comment off. “I understand. Cal, you’ll need to stand guard. No doubt Yomi’s people are lurking around here. I don’t want to attract any more attention than necessary.”
Cal nodded in understanding. Sunari hovered over Dexter, running her hands slowly on each of his limbs. Broken bones didn’t heal well after one had been brought back from the dead. The less destruction to the body the easier it was to rise. Though Dexter would heal quickly, he would no doubt be in pain. Sunari braced herself, taking in a deep breath. Beside her she grabbed a jar from her bag. It was still warm from when she sent Kyllian to drain the blood of a lower level demon. She opened the jar, setting it before her.
She dipped her pinky finger in the blood, running it along Dexter’s forehead to the tip of his nose. She repeated the process, the two lines making a cross upon his forehead. She took in a steady breath, closing her hands together like she was praying. And in truth, she was a little. Countless years had gone by since she had retouched on her alchemy skills. Touching her hand to the ground, a light green circle wrapped around Dexter’s body. In the jar beside her was blood; enough blood to bring back one person.
“Ik roep de machten op die zijn!” The hairs on Cal’s arms stood up on edge. He had never witnessed a necromancer and their work. Sunari’s voice was like an echo in his mind. He shuddered before remembering to be on guard. The blood from the jar began to cyclone; twisting around in one long spring like image outside the container. A pain inside Sunari began to fester, and she opened her mouth to scream. Cal turned to look over at her. She was floating above the ground, her hands spread on either side of her.
Her eyes had gone black; a shade so deep there seemed to be no eminence of life within her. Before he had time to react he sensed a presence heading their way. He took off at full speed attempting to bring the demon away from Sunari. A power emanated from her hands, oblivious to the energy signature approaching. “Rechts ik zweer u af!” The blood rushed into Dexter’s body and Sunari fell to the floor, unconscious for the moment.

Hiei grasped at his chest. The massive energy source was intoxicating. It made his adrenaline rush and his heart beat. What was this miraculous vigor? He forgot all about his minor feud with Yomi; instead focusing on the being that created this power in the first place. He was still out of kilter when Cal came from his side, pummeling them both into the ground. Hiei was angry. Before the werewolf could strike again Hiei was on his feet, katana in hand. Cal was immobile for a moment, praying that this demon was the only one.
In a wisp of misplaced air, Hiei was before Cal. It was his scent that stopped him; katana at the werewolf’s throat. He smelled like Sunari…but how…? Quicker than Cal’s eyes could detect, Hiei was back in his previous position. ‘What is he doing…?’ Cal looked around him discretely, wondering where the hell Sunari and his brother were. Hoping they were still alive. The breeze brought with it Yomi’s people. Cal didn’t have time for this nuisance. “If you’re done pestering me, please, allow me to leave.”
Hiei could sense Yomi’s people fast approaching. Leaving this poor sap to fend for himself didn’t feel right. Even if he had attacked Hiei first…in his resolve, Hiei stepped beside Cal. “Now is no time for your heroics.” Cal smirked, bracing himself for a further attack…

Sunari’s eyes fluttered open, her head feeling dazed and confused. Beside her, Dexter was rubbing his arm tenderly. She got to her knees, her body feeling weakened. “I must say my Queen, I have never been happier to see you. What took you so long?”
Sunari looked up at Dexter, sitting on her butt. “Don’t patronize me kit, I am twice your superior.” Dexter chuckled, raising his hands in defeat. Both tensed; not far in the distance the sounds of battle could be heard. Sunari stood to her feet quickly. “Come Dexter, your brother is in that fight.”

Cal was gripping his arm as the sword ripped through it. Before the soldier could attack again Hiei slit his throat, leaving him to the ground below. “Hn, is Yomi’s army really so pathetic?”
“Ha! I’ll kill you weakling!”
Hiei grinned. “Fancy weapon you got there. I trust you know how to use it?”
The soldier spun the Kusarigama over his head before throwing it toward Hiei. It took less than effort to avoid it, leaving Hiei bored and irritated. Sunari came from behind; panting and trying to keep awake. Alchemy took a lot out of her. ‘Hiei…!’ Anger flashed in her eyes. The long chain of the Kusarigama lay out to the side of the rather tall soldier. Before he could strike again, Sunari stepped on the chain. However he was stronger than she anticipated and the chain flipped her in the air. She gasped, landing on her feet hard. Before the chain could escape her reach, Sunari grabbed hold of it.
The chain cut into her hand before it finally settled. Wrapping it around her arm to get a tighter grip, she tugged back. “I think that is enough bloodshed for one night, don’t you agree?”
Hiei had to admit; he was shocked. Everything about this woman was a lie…and yet, it didn’t deter him from his feelings. He felt the need to laugh about this fact, but didn’t. She stood before him, the only civilized person in the group. When he saw need for bloodshed she saw the need to work it out. They were the exact opposite, but at the same time, fit together. It was nothing that he had ever suspected.
Amidst his thoughts, Hiei had been distracted. The hefty soldier took his chance, backhanding Sunari to the floor. She still held onto the scythe, trying to keep at least that at bay. Before anyone realized what happened, the soldiers head fell to the floor beside Sunari. She took in a deep breath, before falling back completely.
Quickly, Cal rushed to her side, helping Sunari to her feet. “Are you alright my Queen?”
Sunari brushed herself off. “Yes, thank you Cal.”
“Calvin!”
