Blood Ties: Awakening
Blood Ties: Awakening
The silence in the air was overwhelming. Nina had no doubt brought trouble with her agonizing scream and in Sunari’s condition she was in no shape to do much about it. Her hand still burned with the silver that ran thru it. True, grabbing the silver chain had not been her most intelligent idea (she seemed to be having less of those lately). But at the time she thought Hiei was in danger. She scoffed mentally. He couldn’t have been in much danger if had traveled in the Makai alone. Logical thought seemed to escape her anymore.
Kyllian stepped out of the tent upon their return; her face a mask of fear. Cal rushed to Nina’s side, leaving a mix of emotions behind him. “Thank Kirke you’re back Sunari…I have no idea what I’m doing. She’s in so much pain!”
According to Sunari’s internal clock Nina’s labor had begun none too soon. Another loud scream made Sunari wince. “Kyllian I’m going to water and lots of it. Dexter, gather everyone in camp and prepare for an attack. Yomi is nothing if not predictable. Hand the children to Nikita, she will watch them.” Both persons nodded, taking off to do their appointed tasks. Sunari turned to go to Nina. The faster she delivered this child the better for all of them. She was caught around the waist mid stride, a look of surprise dancing across her face. She had momentarily forgotten all about Hiei’s presence. He turned her around to face him in a smooth motion, crushing her body to his. “Hiei,” his grip tightened and she gripped onto a piece of his clothing.
“You have some explaining to do, woman.” His crimson eyes bore into her golden hues. He made her nervous, that much he could tell.
Sunari growled, trying to push Hiei away, “Oh? And you don’t you insolent little-” She paused mid sentence. The look in his eyes…it terrified her. So much lust and so much annoyance… She shook it off. She needed to stay angry with him. Him and his prefect façade…she sighed as all her anger melted away from her. She couldn’t stay mad at him and it was proving to be a big problem. Life would certainly be easier without him in it. Everything about him made her stomach turn and her heart skip beats. Everything about him made her life that much more difficult. Here he was, truly angry with her and she stood before him ogling over his perfect…everything.
“Were you saying something, Sunari?” And his lips crashed down on hers, sending her in a hazy spiral out of conscious thought. The feeling of his lips on her made her whimper and he smirked, licking the top of her lip ever so slightly. Nina screamed out again, bringing Sunari back to the moment. “Go help your kin…my Queen.”
He released her and she stumbled back. He stared at her, a look of satisfaction on his face. The way he said ‘my queen’ was almost condescending, but she didn’t have time to think about it. Wiping off her mouth with the back of her hand she rushed to the tent.
“You bitch! What have you done to me?” Nina was yelling now.
Sunari winced at her outburst. “It’s called child birth kit and I did no such thing to you. Cal did.” Cal quickly looked over at Sunari, revenge clear in his eyes as Nina focused her anger toward him.
Nina was squeezing his hand fiercely and he winced. “I don’t care who did it! Just make her come out and do it now!”
Quickly recovering from the minor eruption, Sunari took up her position between Nina’s legs. At least Kyllian did one thing right. She didn’t have time for the legalities of proper sanitation and gloves. The baby would wait for no man…
Outside, Dexter gathered the children marching them to Nikita. The six foot Were towered over him, a walking stick in her left hand. Her burgundy eyes were hard and her long black hair hung well past her waist in thin straight lines. He never understood why she carried that damned thing; it wasn’t as if she needed it. She was beautiful despite being partially blind in one eye. “I trust you can take it from here, Nikita?”
There Were gazed down at the frightened children. “Preparing for the worst I see…”
Dexter nodded. “We can’t afford to be cautious with Yomi. He’s no doubt sent every good man to retrieve this child. Considering her mother…”
Nikita smirked. “Ah yes, his attacks have gotten more frequent lately. The birth of The Creator’s grandchild is no doubt something he wants in on.”
Dexter flinched. “Mm. That and the upcoming prophecy have gotten him on edge.”
Nikita scoffed, leaning back against a large, dying, willow tree. “Hm. Excuse me if my faith in The Creator has dwindled. If she cared about our kind she wouldn’t have disappeared four hundred years ago. Leaving her only child behind no less...”
“True thought that may be her return is prophesized. She will deliver us all. You’ll see. I’ll be damned if I let Yomi destroy any more of our family before that happens. Let alone take that child to be his mate…”
Nikita waved him off. Yomi had been waiting for that for years. She believed it to be one of the reasons he never singled Nina out. As The Creator’s return being prophesized so was her grand child and Yomi, amidst the bloodshed he created, had been waiting centuries for her arrival. As the seer of the pack, Nikita had seen this coming long ago. Whether she admitted it or not, her fear of the upcoming war Yomi would create scared her. “Of course you love her; she’s your sacrifice.”
Dexter took off, leaving Nikita in the silence of the fear the children brought with him…
Hiei stood guard outside Nina’s tent. In all his years as ruler Yomi was the man Hiei had never cared to have a partnership with. It was different with Yusuke. They had known each other for years before the ex Spirit Detective took his demon form. Only a testament to how much things could change. Now, he didn’t care to have an enterprise with the ex thief who once ran with Kurama. What he wanted was to slit the man’s throat for attacking his potential mate and her kin. Hiei paused in thought. What was her kin? Their energy signatures gave off the essence of being human. Obviously that wasn’t true; them living in the Makai was enough to prove that. So why did she live in The Ningenkai?
He let out a frustrated sigh. His demon nature told him to drag Sunari out of that tent and demand answers from her…but the compassionate side he had developed in The Ningenkai told him to be patient with her. Hiei tensed. Yomi’s people were close now. He wasn’t worried about it though. Their numbers were a far cry from truly being troublesome. Inside, Hiei heard Nina scream again. He pulled out his katana…just in case…
“You need to push harder. Nina!” Sunari was screaming at her now. An hour in labor and the girl had wasted more energy bitching and moaning than she had pushing. At this point, Cal was content. He could no longer feel his hand and that was just okay with him. Not ten minutes before this Kyllian had rushed in with water and clean towels. “What took you so long?” Sunari asked, screaming at Nina to push again.
“Ran…all the way to the house…brought towels…lots of water…” She was out of breath, leaning in on herself. Sunari chuckled. Sometimes her sister did have a brain.
“Kyllian, I need you to check on Cal and the rest of the pack; their no doubt guarding a few miles ahead of here. Yomi’s people are hot on the trial.”
Kyllian nodded. “Yeah, the sounds of battle are faint but I just heard them on the way back. Are you sure you’re going to be alright by yourselves?”
“Yes, thank you.” Before Kyllian could leave Sunari stopped her again. “Take Hiei with you. He’s no help to me here.” She turned back to Nina, determination in her eyes. She wasn’t going to lose any more people tonight if she could avoid it. “Now push!”
Nina’s body shook with pain, her eyes spilling tears down her face. Sunari laughed, finally getting somewhere. She could barely just see the head. It wouldn’t be long now. Nina slumped back, her breathing ragged. Cal smoothed back her drenched hair whispering sweet nothings in her ear. “You don’t have time to rest Nina. I need you to keep going.”
Hiei was hesitant to leave Sunari behind but Kyllian had practically dragged him away. “They’ll be fine.” She assured him, running through the forest to catch up to the pack. There was blood in the air but it was so tainted Hiei couldn’t tell who it belonged too. “I hope we’re not too late.” The sight of the pack fighting was not one Hiei had ever seen before. They were strategic planners; one’s who worked together. Teamwork was something Hiei had never grasped as a child.
Before one of Yomi’s people caught him off guard Dexter swung out his arm, the demon slamming into it and hitting the floor unconscious. He turned back to Hiei, a small smile on his face. Was he expecting a thank you? Hiei was definitely off kilter. he set his sights on Sunari’s sister. Of all the people she would want protected that was his best guess. Kyllian stood back to back with another woman. The woman looked frail; short and petit. Their stances were sharp. Two feet apart, one fist in front and one fist behind preparing for any attack.
Hiei was prepared to step in and destroy the soldier who dared attack them when the petit woman surprised him. She latched onto the soldier’s arm with her right hand, shoving kick after kick in his already bloody face. Quickly she rushed forward, bending him backward with one quick palm thrust to the underside of his chin with her free hand. Kyllian smiled. Hiei hardly recognized her structured hand movements and he was too mesmerized to look away. Kyllian lifted her leg in the air, her hands spread on either side of her before her leg crashed down on the soldier’s neck. The snap reverberated through the forest and Dexter took off back to the camp. “One got away! Let’s go!”
Hiei looked all around him; in their wake they left destruction and blood. He had been so wrapped up in this new fighting style that he had lost track of the mission at hand. He turned on his feet, quickly catching up with the rest of the group.
The tent had grown quiet as Sunari quickly cleaned the baby. She had decided it was well worth the wait. The child was beautiful with steel blue eyes and a small tuff of brown hair on her head. Sunari chuckled and Nina gasped in surprise. The thin silver chain wrapped around her neck before she realized it and Sunari sputtered, holding the now crying baby close. Cal was on his feet, but something made him stop. It was fear. Fear for his child and their Queen.
“Don’t do something foolish. Give me the child and I’ll let you keep your life.” Sunari winced. The silver was eating away at her skin and blood was dripping hotly down her breasts. There was pain. A lot of pain, but she had no time to think about it. Her life hardly reveled in comparison to the child in her arms. Her golden eyes lost some color and she was growing woozy. Still, her grip didn’t tighten. Cal took a step forward and the chain dug in further. “I said don’t be foolish! If it’s her death you are wanting all you had to do was say so!”
Sunari cried out, the pain over taking her. “Remove that chain from my potential mate and I’ll consider killing you quickly.”
