Blood Ties: Arsenic and Old Chains
Blood Ties: Arsenic and Old Chains
Sunari barely had time to concentrate let alone breathe. The baby was screaming, the chain at her neck was still burning through, causing the smell of burnt flesh to rise in the air and Kyllian was crying. The tent was suddenly too small. Sunari struggled against the bindings. The third presence behind her was overwhelming. “Sunari, be still.” Cal spoke softly and the soldier behind her tensed before dropping the chain and falling to his knees. Hiei faltered, unsure of what to do but in his resolve dropped his sword and removed the chain around her neck, taking skin with it. Consciousness was just a fleeting thought for her at this point but she tried to hold on. Cal ripped his daughter from Sunari’s arms and she quieted down. The quiet consumed them after the baby had gone mute…gave them time to think. What was Hiei’s purpose in delaying the kill? Had he perhaps seen something that she had not? A deep stillness enveloped them.
“Forgive me, my Queen…”
Cal returned back to his previous position, never moving. There was a look of grave confusion and terror on his face. Sunari couldn’t quite figure out what it was or why it was there; all she knew was that pain was becoming a serious part of her daily life. Hiei cradled her against his body and her head lolled back against his arm. The soldier removed his helm, his blonde hair a messy tangle atop his head. “I didn’t recognize her from behind…I didn’t think she was still alive…” ‘That must mean the prophecy must be accurate…’ “My name is Himoru.”
Sunari’s vision was becoming blurry; her sense of hearing was inept. She knew someone had spoke by the look of surprise on Cal’s face. Her grip was slowly weakening. She found she could no more move than she could speak. What was happening to her? “A shape shifter, working for Yomi…? But you’re one of us… Why?” Nina was crying now, staring down at Sunari.
Himoru paused to admire his handy work, Sunari lost in a haze of confusion and darkness. Thoughts and sounds and sights were nonexistent. A deep sadness washed over him. “Yomi has my family in servitude…my wife and only child. Our objective tonight was to take The Creator’s Granddaughter and deliver her to Yomi in exchange for my family and I’s freedom. I doubt he knows of the Queen’s presence here.”
Sunari opened her eyes softly, and Hiei gasped in surprise. Her once perfect oval eyes were now cat like golden slits. Something inside her was changing. Her eyes closed again. “We’ve been avoiding the Makai for over seventy years now…ever since we staged our own death. Sunari was hoping it would keep Yomi off the pack. Obviously, that plan didn’t pan out so well.” It was Kyllian who spoke; fear washing over her. “Yomi has caused quite a problem for us in the past years. Sunari only comes to the Makai two days before the full moon, to keep order in the pack. Without her there to guide the wolves there would be chaos and destruction in this land. Sunari is Alpha of the pack for many reasons…she mastered the things I never cared too.”
Hiei stroked her hair back. She had been limp in his arms the entire time. A sense of worry washed over him. He didn’t deal well walking into situations blind sighted.
“Please…what have you done to her?” Cal’s voice was smothered in concern as he coddled the child in his arms.
“It wasn’t my intention to hurt her…Lord Hiei scared me. My special talent is toxins. When Lord Hiei surprised me I accidently injected her with a special poison. At some point she will turn against her will. The stronger the Werewolf the longer the change takes. When that happens…we should all be out of her way.”
“Jesus,” Cal got to one knee before Hiei. Hiei wasn’t sure if his shock came from the realization of who he truly was or what the shape shifter had done to their Queen.
Kyllian went pale. “How…could you? Do you have any idea what you’ve done? ”
Himoru’s face was downcast. “I’m sorry Master Kyllian.”
“I fail to see the big deal here.” Hiei spoke calmly though he was plagued with fear…and a sadistic sagacity of curiosity. Kyllian looked over at the Demon Lord. Obviously, he knew nothing about this. Her kind was just as knew to him as loving her sister was turning out to be.
“You fail to understand; that would be a more appropriate statement.” Hiei ignored the shape shifter’s snide comment. “Sunari and her sister are a different breed of Lycanthrope. The one’s depicted in legends. This was the form The Creator bestowed upon them. While their kin only take on the form of the actual animal…Sunari and Kyllian are far more dangerous. When this young Were changes on the full moon he will still have a small semblance of memory left.” He pointed to Cal. “Kyllian and Sunari will remember nothing. Their rampage knows no bounds.
“Sunari and Kyllian were created by the Creator, they were not born. They are known as The Firsts.” Kyllian faltered in step; shock enveloping her entire body. “Alchemy created these two, which is the reason Sunari, has the skill in the first place. The Creator had no idea what she had fashioned until it was too late. In their wake, the dynamic duo created destruction and chaos; they were the very awakening of what human beings saw as monsters. Even Van Helsing couldn’t touch them. The Creator had foolishly tied her very being to them making it impossible to destroy them without killing herself.
So instead, she found a gypsy who could grant them souls. After that, she disappeared and Yomi started war. The Sunari you see here now is not the Sunari that once roamed The Makai four hundred years ago.”
Hiei only caught clips and phrases of what Himoru said. What was a ‘Van Helsing’? Sunari whimpered in his arms, bringing him back to her.
“That-that’s not true!” Kyllian was yelling now. “We were born to a Simone and Whittney Krump! We weren’t made! After our parents left us in The Ningenkai, Barbara took us in. She cared for us when no one else would…!”
“Eh…” Himoru stared at Kyllian, a look of astonishment on his face. “I didn’t realize she expunged your memories too. I’m sorry Master Kyllian. I didn’t recognize…”
Kyllian fell to her knees and Sunari began to seizure. Hiei held her tighter to him, keeping her from thrashing around. The shape shifter stood to his feet. “It-it’s happening!”
“My god…” Cal helped Nina to her feet. There was no time for her to dress appropriately. For the moment she had to forget her pain and move. He took off running, dragging Nina behind him. The shape shifter grabbed Kyllian, wrenching her to her feet.
“Lord Hiei, we have to go! There is nothing I can do for her now!”
Hiei looked back and forth between the two options. Go with Kyllian and remain safe or stay with Sunari and test the waters. A loud snapping sound from Sunari’s body caused him to jump back. Her body was bent in an unnatural position. Her eyes were open now and Hiei was too mesmerized to look away. Her rib cage was expanding, ripping the blood stained white shirt she was wearing. Her bones cracking reverberated in his ears. Her shoes were shred to nothing as he beastly feet grew. Her fingers were longer, more slender. The scream emitting from her throat was more like a loud voluminous roar. It made his heart beat faster.
“Come on!” Kyllian grabbed his arm, wrenching him backward. “We have to leave Hiei before-” A large power erupted around them, sending them flying back roughly. Hiei was the first on his feet, a look of amazement washing over him. Sunari stood before them, the quarter moon shining above her. Her eyes were red with a hint of gold. Her lip twitched giving the Demon Lord a better look at her large canines. In the Ningenkai things that were furry were often related to being cute. Sunari was horrifying and nauseatingly so. A lump caught in Hiei’s throat. Dread kept him locked in his position.
Kyllian pushed herself up on her knees, choking on the power that her sister released. Himoru wheezed in an attempt to even out his breathing. In their endeavor to escape Sunari before she lost all humanity, they had gotten caught in the crossfire. Death would no doubt come quickly for them. Sunari’s ears eased up at the shape shifter’s obvious unease. A glint of hunger in her eyes echoed in his head.
The ground shook lightly as Sunari took a step forward. Her long legs were muscled, as her arms. She walked with a gracefulness lacked in most beasts her size. It was clear to him that she had accepted this form in more ways than one. She took another step, Hiei in her sights. It seemed there was an understanding in her eyes as she continued to get closer. It kept Hiei from moving. Did she recognize him? It was only when she was directly towering over him that Hiei realized the true danger lurking inside her. Bending down, she stopped when she was face to face with the small fire demon. She took in a breath and then suddenly blew it out in Hiei’s face. She tilted her head to the side before opening her long nozzle and howling a warning.
The recognition in her eyes as not recognition of him…it was the recognition of a blood lust long put on hold.
