Chapter 2
Cold Decisions
"So who's next in out little story telling circle?" Kurama asked. "Yusuke?"
"I'm going to need some more time to think up something strange enough for you all." He said. "After all, my life is already strange enough as it is."
"How about you Hiei?" Kurama suggested, turning to the fire demon.
"No." Hiei said flatly. He was not about to start spewing his past for anyone who wanted to listen.
"Come on Hiei," Yusuke said coaxingly. "Your going to have to tell us a story either way…"
"Hey guys, what about me?" Kuwabara piped up. But the other to were to busy convincing Hiei to notice Kuwabara's complaints.
"Fine! If I tell a story will you leave me alone!?" Hiei shouted.
"Of course we will." Yusuke said, sitting back smugly. Hiei glared once for good measure, then got ready to tell.
"This is something I dreamed about a while ago…" He started, but was interrupted by Kuwabara.
"You dream shorty?" Kuwabara started, seeing this as a perfect opportunity to ridicule. He was swiftly silenced by a punch from Yusuke.
"Any way…" Hiei said, "This is what I dreamed…"
"I was on a rather large boat, and I seemed to be heading for the island that the Dark Tournament Finals were held. The sky was heavy with gray, rain laden clouds, and a brisk wind sent spray up the sides of the boat. The water was a back blue, like a bruise, churned by the fierce gales.
"For some reason I knew that the boat only had enough fuel to get itself and me to the island, which was beginning to appear in the distance. Any more weight and the boat would run out of energy and stop.
"As I stood there upon the prow of the boat, watching the island become clearer and clearer, I sensed another person aboard this ship with me. At the same instance I realized this; I knew what had to be done. This extra weight had to be disposed of. With this second person on, I could never make it to the island. So I made my way to the back of the ship, were a supposedly empty storage compartment held the stowaway. I stopped outside the door to prepare myself physically to snap this poor saps neck. He'd never even know what hit him. Then I could dispose of the body in the water and continue upon my journey. I reached forward to open the door, and snapped open the lock. What emerged was not what I had been expecting. It was a girl. Any not just any girl. Yukina."
"What?!? Why were you dreaming about my Yukina!" Kuwabara began, outraged.
`That's right…' Kurama thought. `Kuwabara doesn't know that Hiei and Yukina are siblings.'
Once Kuwabara had been settled by Yusuke, Hiei started his story up again.
"I was so startled by this discovery, that I stood there, in open-mouthed shock. She stood up and stretched, then gave me her ever in place smile.
"I guess I'm found, huh?" She came out of the space and stood next to me, looking at me expectantly. What did she want me to do? Serve her tea and talk about the weather?
"I turned away and started toward the prow, giving myself time to collect my thoughts. I was obviously going to the island for some important reason We had gotten closer to the island itself, and I could see a line of jagged rocks. If Yukina, even as slight as she was, stayed on, the ship would run out of fuel about 300 yards from shore. Then the waves would push it back and impale it on the rocks. I was at a loss. One life or two? And if I didn't get to the island, what would be the consequences?
"As I contemplated this Yukina had followed me at a respectful distance, and stopped beside me when we had reached the prow again. She broke the silence a few moments later.
"So, I suppose well get to the island soon. I'm really excited." I grunted, still thinking about the best way to tell her all this. "I heard rumors that my brother was on this island, so I snuck on so I could go there and find him. I've never met him, you know."
"Her words sent chills down my spine. How could I send her to her death? She wanted to meet her bro-" Hiei paused for a second, then continued a bit softer. "She wanted to meet her b-brother so badly. But it had to be done. I didn't know what the consequences would be if I didn't make it. I took a deep breath and braced myself to tell her the awful truth.
"Yukina." I said. She turned to me, eyes bright with anticipation. "This ship only had enough fuel to get itself and my weight there. No more, no less, except for an extra five gallon tank in case of absolute emergency." I watched her eyes fill with fear. "You mean, I have to get off?" I nodded. "Is there another boat that can come get me, or something?" She was grabbing for hope, and I was ripping it away piece by piece. "This boat has no radio. I cannot call for help. In about five minutes the fuel in the emergency tank will run out and this boat will not be able to tow your weight without fatal consequences. It will end up running into those rocks." I pointed at the steadily growing rock bed in the distance. Her eyes filled up with tears, and she dropped to her knees.
"I stepped back and let her reconcile and prepare in peace. About three minutes later, I tapped her. "Are you ready?" I asked. "Yes, I suppose." She said. The initial shock had worn off and she had been able to accept what was happening. She nodded to herself resolutely, and tuned to me.
"I really wanted to see my brother. If you ever meet him, tell him I love him." Her words ripped holes in my soul, and I become locked to the deck, my legs refusing to move. She opened the gate on the side over the cold waters, and looked down at her fate. Looking back at me, eyes filled with tears, she said, "Goodbye, Hiei."
A single tear gem fell to the deck, as though moving through slow motion. Before my eyes she stepped backwards, and hung in the air for a brief moment, long enough to give me one final smile, and let to more tears fall. I wished to call her back, take her place in a watery grave, but I couldn't move. In the next moment, she vanished. Time returned to normal speed and I dropped to my knees, howling my anguish to the unfeeling gray skies. Slowly, I made may way to where her tear gem had fallen, and scooping it up, held it in my hands. Holding I close, I rocked back and forth with the ships movement, consumed by guilt and sorrow, and the clouds began a sprinkle of rain to patter upon the deck."
"That's a very sad dream Hiei" Kurama said softly.
"Yeah." Yusuke agreed, lost in his own thoughts.
"Well, I told you a story, and now you have to leave me alone." Hiei said without emotion. But he turned away swiftly to wipe a tear that was forming away swiftly. `I don't cry.' He thought savagely. But the drop on his finger proclaimed him a liar.

I think that is was a bit over dramatic, and I know I made Hiei quite a bit more emotional then he's ever been, but the dream was about his sister, and that's his soft spot, so I glorified that fact.
